[Q] CyanogenMod Portable Hotspot - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well since wifi tether does not work with this build. I was just curious if the one built into cyanogenmod is free just like the wifi tether app in the market?

OK, first of all....what ROM are you using right now? CM7 or a different one because it sounds like you're talking like we're right there with you dude! The WiFi tethering in CM7 works flawlessly and YES is build in so is FREE! The only thing is that you can't use the one in the market prior to trying to use the build in one because it will break the build in one and that will open up a can of worms!
For future questions or anything, try to explain things a bit in detail and include what rom you're currently on....if you're talking about a kernel include that as well! Don't always assume that we're mind readers or anything.......Oh and NO I'm not catching an attitude, I just like to use exclamation points...lol

[Q] CM7 with netflix, skype, and wireless tethering?

Does anyone have CM7 with netflix, skype (w/video), and wireless tethering all working on their incredible 2?
I am thinking about trading in my inc2 for an iphone 4 because I know the netflix and skype w/video apps work without spending any time modifying the OS. And from what I've heard the jailbreak process for wireless tethering is super easy on the iphone 4.
However, if it is fairly easy to get all of this working on an inc2 (meaning I don't want to spend more than a few hours), then I will just keep mine and avoid giving in to apple.
I'm on CM7 and a Skype video test call worked, whereas before rooting this morning the video test would crash the app. xgunther said in another thread that he had wireless tether working, but I've not been able to get CM7's integrated tether nor the source wifi tether app to work. Might just be my PC, though. I can see the networks, but I'm having a hard time getting an IP.
I don't have a netflix account so can't comment on that.
Netflix is apparently working: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15494240&postcount=18
Wifi tethering worked for me on the first try, Netflix works (it's sort of laggy), and I haven't tested Skype video calling.
I'm on the latest nightly build as of July 8. What isn't working for me is the compass (north=south).
FWIW, I did stumble across a thread about wireless tethering where someone mentioned that the latest version (beta) does not work and said to use the latest non-beta version.
I have yet to root my phone and verify myself though.
Where did you guys get the Skype Video apk and the Netflix APK is it from the XDA thread?
EDIT: Found the Netflix APK

I was able to find the Skype apk by doing a Google search. I actually found two of them. However, since I am currently running Android 2.2, they just force close when I enable video. From what I have read you need to use the Android 2.3 in order to get the Skype w/video apk to work on an inc2.

I'm pretty sure the Skype .apk I'm using is found here: http://www.droid-life.com/2011/04/11/download-skype-with-video-on-android/
I tested the Skype and Netflix (The NEW NetFlixONE PowerHouse ColorConversion Super App [High Color Contrast Very Bright]) they both work pretty much flawlessly for me on wi-fi!

with apple though, everytime they do a software update don't you have to wait for a new jailbrake and do it all over again? btw it's really easy to S-OFF & install a ROM on the Inc 2
Netflix works, WiFi and USB tether work on CM7, apparently Skype video works, and there is a Zip you can flash to get video chat in Google Talk or search "Talk 1.3 installer" in marketplace.
When I try to install the Skype mobile apk, I just get an "application not installed" message. Any tricks I can try?
I've tried the first download link and the mirror.

I'm in the same boat, I'm S-Off with the latest Cyanogenmod 7 Nightly flashed and the skype apk won't install. I got the netflix apk to install without a hitch.

Do a Google search for "Skype with video support for various devices". First result. Sorry, can't post outside links...

Thank you, I actually was able to find the file, and it installed successfully. I haven't been able to test video yet, but the option is available.
Yea I found a different Skype Apk after I posted that, and It fully works, both front and back cameras. And you can still IM while the video is on. Pretty cool.

Care to explain where?

I just skyped with my wife via wireless connection, and it works amazingly well. We were on for 45mins, and it never stuttered or reduced quality. At some point I'll try 3G and see how well that works.

I can't post a link, but I can say if you search for a skype v.2.0.0.45 you'll find the one I used. lol

AOSP Roms and built in tethering

I have search quite a bit today and cannot seem to find a resolution to my issue. The built in wireless tethering in any of the current AOSP roms doesn't work well for me. It doesn't allow changing the channel, it doesn't allow access control, it doesn't allow me to see what systems are connected, it doesn't allow me to see how much data has been used and what the through-put currently is, etc, etc, etc.
The android-wifi-tethering app has all of that and under a sense rom works great for me. I have searched and found other people that have had these same issues and the answer is always "Use the built in tether app, its great!" or anyone who actually gives an answer (IE different wifi drivers) has let their links die.
Is there anyone that has gotten the android wifi tethering to work on a GB AOSP rom? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I never got built in tether to work on AOSP roms. I usually have to use barnacle. Sense roms = no problem. I need tether to work, its a must for me and a deal breaker for these AOSP roms Id like to use
Works fine for me on salvagemod and cm7.1

I believe the issue is with a missing file on SD card. There was a thread where teh roxxor explained it n got it working, but you will have to search for it. Can't link it now

This is correct. Make a folder on your sdcard named android.tether, then place the attached file in the folder, and then uninstall/reinstall wireless tether. It's no longer available in the market, so I attached an apk of that as well. I would have linked, but I can't find it at the moment.
Edit: You have to rename the file, just delete the .zip, because you can't upload a bin file for some reason.
check it out

well to start off you may click on the link in my sig to see all aosp roms/kernels and their download links. second if you have an aosp rom and you used a wifi-tether app, than you just broke your wifi tether in the app and in the rom, just delete the app and reflash your rom/kernel. i have used decks gb rom, ICS(Mod7) and i am running the latest cm7 nightly #256 atm and my wifi tether works great. if you are interested in updating your radios there is a link to it through the thread in my sig. if you do check out the link in my sig feel free to ask questions or give comments in the thread. hope i helped ^_^

CM9 PreAlpha Streaming Video Issues

Not sure if this has already been addressed, but none of my apps work... Netflix, YouTube, hacked Hulu+. I'm guessing this has to do with HWA? Any help would be appreciated.
1st post sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
the most recent CM9 has HWA built in... i would tend to think that most of those streaming services use Digital Rights Management (DRM) which is probably not working in CM9.

That's not the case as I watched Netflix on my CM9 tablet just a few weeks ago.

I'm having this same issue. Anyone know a fix?
if you're talking about drk.hd's CM9 kang for inc then if you used the camcorder fix that was posted, i've heard that it breaks youtube, netflix, etc. If you flash the ROM without the camcorder fix then you should be set. At least that's how I understand it. I'm still waiting for CM9 to have more custimization features before I make it my daily driver so I have been holding off on using this ROM very much but I have kept up with that thread and people seemed to have problems when they used the camcorder fix. I guess it is a trade off right now that you will have to decide on if you want to use it as your daily.
I'm currently on the new Nightly CM9 and Incredikernel HWA Beta 2 and, unfortunately, same issue with the hacked Hulu plus .. Sound with scrambled green bars only. However, YouTube works though, and canceled my Netflix.
Anyone out there up to removing the device check on the latest and greatest version of Hulu+?

I've been running drk.hd's latest nightly for a few days now and am loving it. Best ICS I've tried to date. Also using Incredi Beta 2. I didn't do the camcorder fix before install and can confirm what you posted. Haven't attempted netflix but youtube is working great. If they can work a camcorder fix this will be my new daily probably for the rest of my INC's life.

Okay, so I combed over the thread again and found that even with the drivers that were released recently netflix is broken for everyone using this ROM so I'm going to retract my original statement and tell you this: you are not alone. Many people have been asking/complaining about neflix not working in this ROM and unfortunately nobody has been able to deliver as of yet. My ignorance on the topic sprouts from the fact that I don't have a netflix account therefore I don't use netflix and haven't been staying up to date on this particular issue. I am sorry for the confusion but this should set you straight. The ROM does not yet support netflix or hulu playback to my knowledge. Perhaps in the next build?
For me, some of the playback is hit or miss. I might have to reload it a few times to get it to work but eventually things like YouTube will work and I never flashed the camcorder fix. I was also wondering if this is connected to the TwitchTV app not working as well?
So I am a complete noob, however, isn't the version of Netflix dependent on what device you have? I'm pretty sure Hulu is too. Which means since the Incredible doesn't technically support ICS/HWA (?) the apps don't either? YouTube works but it's version is solely based on the Gapps you install (which are made for ICS) and it works. SO maybe port Netflix and Hulu from another device that officially has ICS?

[Q] Toggling 2g/3g and GPS from menu

I used to have CM7 rom and toggling 2g/3g and GPS was not a problem. But since I moved to MIUI, if I click a 2g/3g toggle it only takes me to the Network menu and tells me that it is not possible to do it on Android directly...
Is there a ways around it, since it is working fine on Cyanogenmods?
I would be interested as well... I am currently using a utility from the market, but as you said, it only takes me to the settings screen, so I have to do 1 more click. All apps in the market mention that direct toggle is not possible.
If you say it works in CM7, then it must have been removed in the newer APIs perhaps?
I don't think so. CM7 I used was a very recent release, though still on 2.3.7 Gingerbread.
Now I am on MIUI which is about half a year older and it can't do switching.
i dont think this is poosible, maybe i might be wrong, but this is the security rules for android system set by google.
Well, since it is working on Cyanogenmod, it obviously IS possible.

Edit.. never mind, they just take u too settings lol

Just install power toggles from market and convert it to system app using titanium. Then you can straight turn on off the GPS and 3g from its widget that you couldn't before. Tried this myself so I know it works.

Yes, i said i might be wrong.
The other possibility can be if you are developing an app, it might not be possible, but there might be a way for ROM developers to have such functionality.
Can't you change the icons you see in the toggle menu? One icon is for the mobile data settings, another one to enable it.
In MIUI JB it works fine (by default). Very stable and fast ROM by the way, much better than the ICS ROMS I've tried.

Tether manager app

Hi all - I am currently using CyanogenMod based ROM's as I really dislike Sammy ROM. I currently tether a lot and wanted to find a tethering manager type app where I could see who was connected and perhaps if possible some more details.
Is there anything like this around? Can't find a decent app. Cheers
