Once you have s-off, you can:
1. Build a linux kernel from source. s-off rules to test kernels
2. Download android/cyanogenmod source, start hacking. s-off rules to test mods.
3. Flash a custom splash1. Nothing more satisfying than seeing your fav avatar instead of "htc" on boot.
4. Go insane flashing recoveries. S-off rules at flashing recoveries. You can change 'em on the fly.
5. Explore fastboot.
6. Brick your phone (NOT RECOMMENDED - DO NOT TRY THIS UNLESS YOU ARE IN NEED OF AN EXPENSIVE PAPERWEIGHT)
7. Gloat to all your friends that your phone is s-off.
8. Say that you have s-off in your sig.
9. Whatever else you can think of.
The following is an easy method to root after AlphaRev is released:
Oh and why would you need an RUU? You don't need to use unrevoked if you have s-off. Just flash a recovery using fastboot.
$fastboot flash recovery <recovery.img>
Where <recovery.img> is the filename of the recovery image you downloaded (include full path)
That's it. You're done. Just flash a rooted ROM from your new recovery.

Ah. Forgot about that.
To other people who read my post - you can only use my method after AlphaRev is released.
To flash a splash1 (again, requires AlphaRev) - $fastboot flash splash1 <splash1.img>

Wow, defo gonna try these out when my xtc test kit arrives. Do you know when alpharev will be released?

How are you flashing?
Off thou flash it through recovery your just fake flashing it. You need to actually flash it through fastboot but you need S-Off. There is a way to do it without fastboot. Just Google it. You use the terminals emulator instead. No idea if it works though
Sent from CM7
as meaple has said, its only a fake flash, so it doesnt actually flash it.
i couldnt get it to work through the terminal method either due to protections (s-on) but i have now s-off, so it let me flash via fastboot first time
Can I do it with unrevoked or do I have to s-off? (assuming i won't make it with the terminal)

yes you can do it with unrevoked, but you would have to unroot first, and then go unrevoked with custom recovery

i tryed to flash via android flasher, fastboot, an via recovery with the .zip file.
everytime the same Oo

Zip is not what you need. You need to get an img file of the recovery you want to flash. You can then do that via Fastboot or Android Flasher etc. Flashing the zip from wherever is still just fake flashing.

No. you don't have to un root. You can flash unrevoked on a rooted device
If you are s on, use unrevoked. Else use the following from fast boot:
fastboot flash recovery cwm_.img

[Q]How to flash Radio and HBOOT

Hello. I want to make sure that the method I read about of flashing the Radio is correct, since this could permanently brick my device.
I have ROOT and S-OFF but nu custom hboot yet. My partitions are stock.
I. To flash a RADIO:
1. Go into recovery
2. Choose install zip from sd
3. Choose zip from sd
4. Confirm
5. Reboot
II. If later I want to flash a custom HBOOT:
1. Download the HBOOT I want (and rename it to PB99IMG.zip)
2. Put it on root of SD card
3. Boot into bootloader (Volume Down + Power)
4. It will ask If I want to upgrade the HBOOT - Select Yes
5. It will reboot on it's own ???
6. Install ROM
Check MD5 of Radio and ROM.
Also I'm unable to check the MD5 of the zip file I've downloaded from AlphaRev - PB99IMG.zip, because it doesn't match. Is this ok?
Are these steps correct?
If there are also other way's I'm more than gladly to know.
I know about AndroidFlasher, but I don't want to risk upgrading from PC, cause lately there were some power down's of the electricity I don't want to risk to happen when I'm in the middle of flashing something as important as Radio or HBOOT.
Thank you for all your help.
L.E.: When do I need to flash the HBOOT downgrader? When I want to go from one HBOOT to another do I always have to first flash the downgrader and then the HBOOT, or there are only certain HBOOT's that I have to apply this prior to installing another HBOOT?

Thanks. I know about this, because I already flashed a ROM (CyanogenMod 7), and I know it is always a necessity to do a full Wipe, especially when you're coming from another ROM.

To check the md5sum you have to extract the hboot.img from the downloaded pm99img.zip file and compare its to the one you can find on the homepage.
Nevetheless, I highly recommend to flash new hboot with fastboot, because the method with the pb99img.zip does not work very often.
Download the image you want, for example the cm7 r2 hboot (bravo_alphaspl-cm7r2.img). Store it anywere you want, I recommend a place where you can go very easily, maybe partition C.
Check the md5sum!!!!
Boot your phone into fastboot mode (start it with pressed back and power button). Now start cmd in windows, connect phone to computer and type:
Code:
fastboot devices
The output should be:
Code:
List of devices attached
HTxxxxxxxxxxxxx device
Instead of xxxxxxxx you should see the serial number of your phone. If it's so, enter the following comments:
Code:
fastboot flash hboot c:\bravo_alphaspl-cm7r2.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot erase cache
Now you have new hboot (in this example cm7r2.) In the first line of your bootloader you should see "AlphaRev Cm7r2".
Thank you. I'll save this text for further uses. So this is the best way to flash another HBOOT.
The method to flash the radios is good?
Thanks.

personally I find it A LOT easier and quicker to use fastboot tools such as fastboot commander. I think it's also better for novice users, and it gives you functions that novice users may not know when it comes to using fastboot with cmd.

Thanks. I am very aware that I shouldn't flash any file that hasn't the right MD5, but thank you for repeating it one more time.
So I've a looked more around and found out that flashing the Radio is as I described it. So I'll take my time now to flash the new Radio (5.17.05.08) and then the new ROM.
Still one question remained unanswered. If someone could help me:

Alpharev uploaded r2 of the hboots for cm7 and oxygen. These two hboots have a protection, that they cannot be overwritten. So if you are using one of these hboots, you have to flash hboot downgrader before you can flash a new hboot.

I have read this thread before I ROOT-ed my phone. It would probably be more easy to flash either Radio or HBOOT through fastboot, but since I've got the problem I mentioned about in first post, I don't want to take the risk. What if the power goes down when I'm in the middle of flashing...then there goes down the phone too
I'll try the fastboot command when I can use my GF's laptop.
Thank you very much.
So to use the HBOOT Downgrader I have to have first one of the two (either Bravo Oxygen r2 or Bravo CM7 r2), and then if I want to put another HBOOT: Flash HBOOT Downgrader ---> Flash HBOOT Bravo Stock ---> Flash Other HBOOT.
Ok. Now I got it al sorted out.
Thanks for all the help.

The step with stock hboot is not needed. You can flash downgrader and then directly the new hboot. The downgrader deletes all partitions.

you only need to flash the HBOOT downgrader from alpharev when you are using a RUU to unroot your phone. Aplharev's HBOOT's are designed so that a RUU will not overwrite the HBOOT - untill you downgrade it using the downgrade utility.

THX a billion!
Im on cm7r2 and want to reverse to stock.
Was looking for exactly this answer!
I to read somewhere that someone just flashes the hboots that he wants,
but not talking about downgrader-use (couldnt find it again - so searched for something like this answer!). And Alpharev dont say anything about
using the downgrader only this:
"Downgrade protection, these HBOOTs cannot be overwritten by an OTA or RUU, unless you flash a downgrader HBOOT first."
So downgrader is only nesccesary if wanting to go stock with a RUU or U want to get OTA.
So, UsManyDead... whatever hboot U use, just flash the next hboot U want.
(remember backup and all that sht. )

[Utility] S-off, utility ideas, and concept

Okay, Im building a utility for windows. Heres some things Im wondering though.
1) can you temp root and flash recovery even though S-On with flash_image?
2) If we cant flash recovery, can we boot it from SD-card. Like the nook
3) If I wanted to S-Off, then unlock for fastboot, could we use the bootloader tools zip here?
4) Will the exploit in general section work if we get the kernel going without unlocking first. Refering back to my previous question can we get cwm son.
I have more for sure. I will edit them in when its not 112 am

Failing that... Rerooting Toot using AAHK (if poss.) would be great cos I have a laptop dedicated/configured for AAHK already.

You don't need AAHK if you're still S-Off. If I remember correctly, to root your current ROM, just push a su manager app (like Superuser.apk or SuperSU.apk) and a su binary. Alternatively, if you want to flash a custom ROM, fastboot flash a recovery img and flash a ROM from there.

You need to get the 4ext img and fastboot flash it, not just install from apk. More detailed instructions are in the thread linked in my signature. Look in the guide in post #7, bottom of page 9, "S-Off no recovery" section.
You need to search for the apk and su binary; I don't have copies. It will only root your current ROM with no customization. If you're going to fastboot flash 4ext you don't need to bother with this, since any ROM you flash from recovery will overwrite your current ROM with the apk and su binary.
OK - kewl!

For anyone else interested in S-OFF REROOT...
GuyInTheCorner gives instructions on how to do this... ROOTING WHEN YOU'RE ALREADY S-OFF (with no custom recovery)
So if you're already S-OFF (either HTC DEV or AAHK [Ace Hack Kit]) but you're not rooted, don't despair! Its a relatively easy fix, all you need is a little time. . Now you'll have to have a card reader for this part. Using a card reader, place a PD198IMG.zip on the root of your SD Card (this means directly onto the SD Card, NOT IN A FOLDER) that contains a custom recovery. What you want to do now is to boot into HBOOT (Volume up+Power). Once you've done that it will automatically try to detect a PD198IMG.zip (which is already on your SD Card). It will flash it and you'll have yourself a custom recovery. Now using the volume buttons to navigate up and down respectively navigate to the RECOVERY option and press the power button. Now you're in your custom recovery, open the mounts section and mount your SD Card to your PC. Now download a SuperUser.zip and flash it in recovery. Congrats! You've flashed a custom recovery and are now rooted! Enjoy
If I helped, hit that thanks button!

I didn't use HTCDEV to unlock the bootloader I used AAHK to achieve S-OFF! So, I should be OK with the procedure you and GuyInTheCorner refer to - yeah?
Achieving root is easy. The hard stuff is to get S-OFF...
If you have unlocked the bootloader or S-OFF'ed, then flash SU in CWM or 4ext and that's it.

if your phone is booting normally, use the 4ext updater. If not flash CWM first and then a custom rom. From the android UI use 4ext updater.

What happened? Did you try to fastboot flash a recovery.img? That should work as long as you're S-Off.
To install Superuser on a working ROM, find a Superuser.apk and a su binary. adb push the Superuser.apk to /system/app and the su binary to .../xbin, I think? There are guides around XDA.

I tried to fastboot flash 4ext by placing the 4ext/recovery zip renamed to PD198IMG.ZIP in the root path of the SDcard then vol-down&power but hboot does not pick it up.
I then tried the 4ext updater but there were errors; so I don't know what's happening - I've almost given up and thinking about updating from FROYO to GingerBread OTA as a last resort and be done with that.
I read that S-OFF should be easy to root but that's not what I'm finding.
there is not enough information about unroot by returning to stock then rerooting for me to feel confident about doing it correctly so I might just go GingerBread - period!

ok, first it is PD98IMG.zip and not PD198IMG and you have an apk that can be downloaded from here: http://www.4ext.net/get.php?apk
You just install it using a file manager and the run it. Download the lastest recovery, flash it from there and you are done.

I don't think his ROM is rooted right now. Is that still possible?

Yeah, that is one of the possiblities. However, he should be able to flash CWM in fastboot, SU and then flash 4ext as he is S-OFF.

[Q] Can I flash custom rom with rooted DHD?

Hi All
I'm not a complete noob but so much to learn
I've successfully rooted and s-off and custom rom a sensation and a couple of tablets.
However regarding my Desire HD 2.35 GB HBoot 2.00.0029
I have managed to Boot unlock, Root and CWM
So far though I can't s-off
Can I still flash a custom rom or do I have to have s-off ?
Which roms can i flash now?
If not is there an s-off tut for 2.35GB
Thanks
Stu
If you want S-Off you need to do it manually. The automated tool for it, AAHK, has been retired. There's a thread around here with manual instructions, but it's not for noobs. You can flash a custom ROM from recovery if you leave your phone the way it is (as far as I'm understanding, S-On, bootloader unlocked, rooted), but you need to fastboot flash the ROM zip's boot.img each time you flash a new ROM.
