[Q] which rom to choose - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys
srry for being a noob here
i just rooted my Desire HD for the first time + ENG-S-Off and radio off
and i want to install a rom and i am having trouble choosing between android rev hd 3.5 or CyanogenMod 7/
any suggestions?

I would personally recommend you to try either Cyanogen or MIUI roms, they are very nice. I am not sure which are exactly available for your device, however. Android Rev seems pretty nice, has the basic HTC look. It's best to try them out first hand, and it's real easy once you back up your rom. Once backed up, if you are ever displeased, you can revert to exactly where you were on the old rom.

Technically, in the manner you're thinking, you can't just choose. However, once you've flashed the rom & done a backup, you can just restore it at any given point. I have a couple of backups I go between, mainly CM7 & MIUI. If I wanted to switch back to CM7 right now, I'd just boot into recovery & nandroid restore. If you want to be able to do that, I would set it up how you like it first - restore your apps with Titanium Backup, set up your homescreens, etc then do your backup. Otherwise it wouldn't be any different than just flashing the Rom.
But really, I'd just try a bunch of different roms out & see what you like. Before flashing, you need to wipe data, cache & dalvik cache at the least. You do this by booting into recovery (I'm not sure of the method for your phone) and choosing wipe. Then choose what you want to wipe. Don't wipe the SD card. I believe in Clockwork Mod, dalvik is under advanced.
If you don't understand this, then you need to read more before flashing anything. Knowledge is your friend... and the best bet against a bricked device.
Good luck!

good info m8
thanx

I have a hero and have used CM6 and CM7 as well a asopCmod ROMs and if my phone's hardware would be better I've been using MIUI I heard pretty cool things about that Rom!!

Just test them out. You dont have to stick with the first one you pick. I think that within the first week of me rooting my evo, I changed roms every day and sometimes two or three times a day, lol. You just have to find the one that has / does not have the things you want.

lol, yup, I used to get the same thing....until I rooted her phone. I dont get to roll my eyes at her cuz im the one stuck putting the new rom on her phone every other day

Basically a nandroid backup is just a fancy word for going into clockworkmod and selecting backup, its actually easier still to download Tom manager from the market and click backup in that app, its so easy when you know how

Haha and my girlfriend hated roms too until I rooted her phone but now I do it all too, while she plays farmville -_-

This is assuming that you are using ClockworkMod Recovery
1. Power off phone
2. Hold down the Power button + Volume down
3. When the white screen comes up, wait for it to do the PC36IMG steps
4. Volume down or up ( will move your option you want ) to RECOVERY the press power button ( power button is always to select your selection )
5. Select backup and restore
6. Select backup
7. wait for process to complete
* your backup will be stored with a dateTime stamp. so if you do multiple backups or backup different roms, you have to remember what date and time that you did them. I have not tried to edit the name of the backup yet.
The above steps are considered a "nandroid" backup, if Im not mistaken.
Now for the wipe process ( these are what I do for each new rom )
1. - 4. are same as above
5. select wipe data/factory reset
6. Select Yes -- delete all user data
7. Select Wipe cache partition
8. Select Yes - Wipe Cache
9. Select advanced
10. Select wipe dalvik cache
11. Select Yes - wipe dalvic cache
12. Select Wipe Battery Stats
13. Select Yes - wipe battery stats
Those steps will give you a clean slate for your new rom to be installed on.

Use rom manager to manage backups stored on the sd card, it can safely change the name into a format that clockworkmod can use (ie.no spaces)
In all respect you really should use rom manager its a great tool, and free from the makers of clockworkmod so intergrates well

few noob questions after finally rooting

Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster.
I finally gave in and fully rooted my EVO and successfully flashed the newest damagecontrol rom. Afterwards, I took some time and set up my phone like how it used to be with the apps, settings, etc. Just a few questions from after this.
If I wanted to flash a different ROM, it is recommended to do a data wipe, correct? And also a NAND backup. Does this mean that my phone will be reset to factory settings again - using the new ROM as a base? In other words, would I have to rearrange my screens, settings, etc. if I wanted to try out a new ROM?
If not a different ROM, but an updated version of my current ROM, do I just flash that on top of what I have? (i.e. DC4.0 is released, do I have to wipe everything again before upgrading?)
If the answer is yes to both these questions, what are the easiest/quickest ways to get my phone looking/acting the way I like when getting a new ROM?
also, I followed toast's method step by step, and got the Amon Ra recovery on my phone as well. What is the function of this? Sorry for all the questions, I have everything working fine, but I'm just curious as to what and how things work on the phone. What is the difference between the amon ra recovery and following steps to use clockword for recovery?
Thanks a lot

Hello there, iv done videos on this rom for youtube, if you want the links let me know but ill go as it follows.
Ok, if you want to test out new roms, just do a nand backup of the one you have now, after that. WIPE both Factory and Delvic cache. Then flash the new rom in your phone adn you will be fine.
Ok, i know DC does this, i dont know about the others yet, But if a new update comes out, just flash that DC update over yours and it will be fine. All user data will be there. YOU shouldn't have boot loop ether. If so, then you will have to wipe again. I didn't and im fine. ( I use fresh evo right now. loving it. )
As for the NAND backup. This saves EVERYTHING so once you are tired of a old rom and wanna try another, just restory the back up and your fine.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply! That cleared up a lot of things for me.
So if I have everything set up the way I want, it is recommended to do a NAND backup at this point?
Also, what are the pros/cons of using Rom Manager (marketplace)?
Thanks a lot

what do you mean? like the different kinds of recoverys? Really i just stay with toasts, his is more stable and as far as the clockmod one, It has issues with formatting the Factory cashe.
Honestly, for someone that is completely new to flashing roms, backing up etc., Rom Mgr. is the best thing for you. You may not have the absolute cutting edge of available roms, but it makes flashing/backing up extremely easy and straightforward. That is how I got started with my previous Droid until I felt comfortable enough to flash the old fashion way. I have literally flashed and backed up hundreds of times using clockwork mod (rom manager recovery) and have not had a single issue. Plus, the app is only a couple bucks if I remembe correctly. I would start there to gain some experience, then move on to flashing zips from here.
just my opinion.
Will rom manager work if I have Amon RA's Recovery?
I think it may replace your recovery

[Q] I know you guys get sick of helping noob but I just rooted and need help!

I have been wanting to root and try a custom rom but I was scared of brick. Anyway I finally rooted with Unrevoked 3.3 which installed Clockwork recovery also and after that I installed rom manager. When I went to do a backup of current rom it said I need to install Clockwork recovery first but its there already. I know there is guides everywhere but thats the problem not sure which to use to learn what to do before I try flashing new rom. What about kernel I really don't understand where to go from here. I am rooted and Clockwork recovery flashed but don't know where to go from here. I am not a idiot just a little guidance please! I really want learn process of installing new and restoring old roms with my Evo. How do I know what other updates need to done before using a certain rom like kernel and radio? Thanks Alot To Anyone That Can Help A Fellow Android Lover!

No I just cheked to see if I could boot to recovery with vol/power buttons and seems fine Clockwork Recovery is there. So I should just let Rom Manager try to install Clockwork Recovery again? What would be my steps to installing new rom after I get rom manager to backup current rom? Thanks Alot!
Well first backup your rom and wimax keys and then go to the xda android development section and download a rom, clear cache /dalvik/ and I think its system restore something like that..I don't use cwr

First of all, if you're certain that your recovery is installed, then you need to decide what rom and what type of rom you want to install? For instance, do you want a Sense based rom (the HTC overlay that your EVO came with) or an AOSP rom (Pure Android like on the Nexus)? For a sense based rom, I suggest Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS-5. You can see photos of it as well as download it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471 and for an AOSP rom, I suggest Salvage-Mod 1.2.1. It can be downloaded from here: http://www.salvage-mod.com/node/4. Make sure you download the Google Applications from the same page. Whichever you decide to flash or any others, put them on your SD card. Now shutdown your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, you will see a set of options. One of the options will be "recovery". By the way, look at the top of the screen and make sure it displays "S-OFF". If it displays "S-ON", you are not rooted. Anyway, select recovery. Your phone will vibrate and display a white EVO screen and then boot into recovery. Your recovery should be ClockworkMod. Go into the backup menu and select nandroid backup to make a backup of your current setup. You can always restore your device to the way it was if you don't like your new roms, mods, themes and kernels. After you've made your backup, go to the wipe menu and wipe everything except the SD card. After that, go to the flash zip menu and flash the rom you want to try. After it's finished, it should prompt you to reboot. Do so and be patient. You will appear to hang at a couple of places. Be patient. Let it finish. Be patient. Do not pull the battery. Be patient. After some time, you will see your rom's splash screen and then your new homescreen. If it is a sense based rom, go to menu-settings-system updates and select update profile after you've signed in with your Google credentials. Enjoy your new rom.

Root of card is preferred but anywhere is fine since you will have to point rom manager to it. Alot of roms come with kernels so I wouldn't sweat it. No need to rename. A good starting rom are any kingsroms insane fast and all features usually work most are still froyo but look much different than ur stock rom

I, too, use amon RA and love it. As for not giving good instructions, don't worry about it. There have been numerous times when I've given summarized instructions because I either assumed the OP knew what I was talking about or I was rushing because I had something else to do. The important thing to remember is that you helped. Period!...

Just d/l the latest version, put it on your sd card, reboot to recovery and flash it, then when you reboot to system, you'll get the prompt to go to the market and d/l each app.

You can either flash it immediately after flashing Salvage-Mod or boot into Salvage-Mod first and then press and hold the power button until the menu appear
Select reboot and then select recovery. Once you're back into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik cache and then flash the Google applications (gapps). Afterwards, reboot.

-steps into the fray-
Well I first off wana say, you were in good hands with dougjamal.
To flash gapps:
1. Download the latest gapps / the ones provided in the salvage mod thread
2. Boot into recovery.
3. After you have flashed the salvage mod rom, wipe your cache and dalvik cache, then flash the gapps zip.

[Q] I want to change rom.. but how?

I'm flashed and rooted etc and i got a rom. And now i wanna change to another one but i cant find a good thread on how to do it..
Do i need to restore etc like the first time so i loose all my setting, apps etc?
Or can i just download one and install it from SDcard?
Sorry for my newb question.. i really dont wanna skrew things up on my phone just change rom
best regards
Download the ROM. Go to Clockwork Recovery, create a backup, then wipe data/cache and go to advanced -> dalvik cache and wipe that. Then install from .zip and find your rom
I presume you've already done a nandroid backup and titanium backup for your apps ? if your changing rom you will need to wipe data/reset in cwm so it will mean restoring your apps and setting up the phone again. then just flash the new rom like you did before with cwm. The rom you choose will probably have some install instructions anyway ? If your updating an existing rom to the new version you can generally just wipe cache and dalvic which means you wont need to setup the phone and apps again.
What you going from and to out of interest ? I'm running bigxies Apex and it really is good.......

Little harsh, but very true.
If you don't know how to do this basic stuff, playing with custom roms and such is a bit dangerous, and quite silly imho
It's not hard, read around the forums a bit, learn what your doing, then and ONLY then, begin to play with things that can turn your phone into an expensive paper weight

[Q] n00b at installing Roms, wanting to install JMTx2

Hi. This is my first time installing a rom onto my newly rooted t989. I wanted to do Jedi Mind Trick x2, but most of the instructions had me lost. I had rooted my phone using the instructions on galaxys2root.com, and they were so easy for me to do. They have a page for installing roms here: galaxys2root .com /t-mobile-galaxy-s2 /how-to-install-rom-on-rooted-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/ but I didn't know if I could install JMT this way too. Any help would be great, as I really don't want to brick my phone. Thanks!
Dude I'm about a month ahead of you. I would install Rom toolbox and use that to install Twrp. I'm not a big fan of Rom tool box but they make it dam easy to install twrp. After that you're golden. Restart into twrp. Do a full backup and follow Ptmr3 instructions. After flashing I use app extractor to get my phone contacts, call logs, mms, app s and their data from the backup you made first. Hope this helps.
Ps Jedi mind trick is the best Rom I've come across by far

After flashing I use app extractor to get my phone contracts, call logs, mms, app s and their data from the backup you made first. Hope this helps.
Ps Jedi mind trick is the best Rom I've come across by far

Awesome, thanks. I'll try that. A lot of the things that confused me were the "wipe system" and other things. The rooting was really easy (i was surprised) and I wanted to do it to install Jedi Mind Trick. Would you recommend x2 or x1? and what are the differences?
Yeah those are options in TWRP. Its to erase sections of the memory from the previous Rom. I had X1 and updated to X2. I have great battery with it after tweaking it, compared to 4.0.4 ROMs. Go X2. Hope everything works out

Okay, so I just got Rom Toolbox lite, and I'm trying to find where TWRP is. I have no idea what that even is. lol I'm so bad.
Okay, so I got the rom installed on the phone. Now I just have to figure it out and try and get my stuff back on. It looks like it is going okay so far.
go to the play store and search for "goomanager" after it's installed open it up. once your at the homescreen of that app hit the menu button on your phone (farthest button to the left) you should see "install OpenRecoveryScripts" click that let it download and it will automatically install for you. once it's installed turn off your device and turn it back on holding down the Volume up and down until the Recovery Menu appears. after that download your ROM and place it in your SDcard and follow these instructions to correctly flash a ROM.
I normally do...
Wipe Data/Factory reset
Wipe cache partition
install zip from sdcard
go to Advanced
Wipe dalvik cache
Wipe battery status
Fix permissions (just incase)
Reboot Device
wait about usually 3-8 minutes depends on the ROM. if it's longer then that then your stuck in a boot loop
this is all on done on CWMR v6.0.1.5

Newbie-Friendly Rom - Htc Desire

Hi,
I just bought HTC Desire (Htc_bravo) and Im quite unhappy with its bloatware. Im currently looking for some ROM and since it would be my first to flash, I need advice. What Rom is easy to flash and start living on (eg. market app included) with minimal chance of something going wrong (bricking mobile, boot-looping...) and with rather high battery life. Something to flash in a few minutes and live happily ever after. My needs are that of a common user. English localization is a must, working wifi is wanted. If manual how to flash this particular ROM is found somewhere, it would be great as well.
I was unable to find here a topic which answers my question completely.

Try MildWild. I have been using it for the past year, and it's fast and stable, with a simple launcher.
Don't worry, you won't brick your phone by simply flashing roms.
You are rooted, aren't you?
Then:
1. Download the rom, and put it on your sd-card.
2. Boot in recovery.
3. Do a Nandroid backup.
4. Do a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik cache, system, sd-ext) (Sd-ext is not the sd-card. If you don't know what that is, and want more storage space, check the partitioning guide in my sig.)
5. Select "Install from sd-card"
6. Wait.
7. Reboot.
8. Wait more (10 minutes)
9. Play with the rom.
If you don't like it, or something has gone wrong, then restore your nandroid backup.

Oh boy, here we go again. You'll have to root and s-off before you do any rom installing.
UPDATE:
Rooted it, S-OFFed (Through CWM), partitioned (through 4EXT) succesfully. Im ready for flashing MW. However, I figured out, that those two (CWM and 4EXT) could be messing up , when both installed at the same time. Just dont know, how to uninstall CWM and if it is necessary. When I run Recovery mode, 4ext says, he is in safe-mode and that he doesnt have acces to "system" partition. Should I worry about that? There is every wipe available but system wipe.
anybody?

When it is in safe mode just wipe all except sdcard and reboot recovery then it will have access to all partitions
