Navigation app on Galaxy S II? - Galaxy S II Themes and Apps

Hi guys,
Been on the dark side for the last 8 months (iPhone 4) and thinking on getting the new Samsung Galaxy S II.
From the specs looks like a great device and really looking forward to its release. In the meantime I would like to know which navigation app will be compatible with Android 2.3? Do I have to use a custom ROM to use free apps?
Thanks for any replies.

For example you can use Sygnic Aura, it will work on SGS II
I am also waitinging for this phone
Free apps you can download from Android Market.

Thanks, will I need a custom ROM?

No you do not need custom.
It works on stock ROMs without any problems.

What about Google's own Navigator? I'm pretty sure it's free but I can't remember, it came already installed with Google Maps & Street View on my Galaxy Tab.

Is Google Navigation working offline?

I do not know what apps will be instaled by samsung in this phone.

It is working online.
BTW I saw the Google Maps navigation icon on movis from the testers.
This I found in another thread

what you need is ownhere google maps 5.3.1, this is a mod version which enabled world wide navigation just google it...

Android has free map apps that do work offline. I am not sure which ones and too lazy to look it up for ya.

here's a good one http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Android

I use Google Maps' Navigator on the HTC Desire, in the car with an upgrade kit (mount & charger). I'd be interested in getting the same when I get the GS2 as it is a fantastic piece of software.

Tx for the sygic aura tip !
Looks pretty neat, map coverage is much better than Copilot, 3D feature and graphics look great and the prize is VERY reasonable ! Almost whole world for 100 bucks !
That will be my first app purchase once my SGSII has arrived

Well why don't you wait and try google navigation, it's free and it will download your route (as long as you have a data connection when you start your journey)

Google Maps/Navigation caches your route and most visited locations so it has semi-offline capabilities.

what about copilote or Ndrive?

I hope tomtom don't take to long. I know they are concerned about piracy. But i will pay when they do decide.

Navigon is a great paid option

Navigon is great alright, however they have outdated Q3 2010 maps and does not seem they will update them any soon.

Copilot only £16.99 does this work ok? or can you get for free~?

im using co-pilot premium which works fine on mine, sometimes closes immediately but upon re-opening it is fine
my copilot 8 works fine for me.
I had issue with Navigon 4 which they refunded me because it wasn't yet compatible with ICS.

I've got Nav Free on mine, not used it yet but started it up to see if it will run and it found my location no problem and seems to be working ok. Like i say though i haven't actually used it so you may find probems i haven't if you do use it.

I can confirm that Sygic FLEET v 8.30 also work ok on Galaxy Nexus but I don't know if is avalible for end users...

Google doesn't have Navigation. It is avalible only for USA and few other countrys also it spend your data and this can be problem if you have limited data plan (100MB) like me. 100Mb is more than enought for me because in office&home and other places I use WiFi...

No "travlel via" or "avoid road" or "alternative route" options. It always tries to put me on M60 around junction 9 during rush hour. It's a no go zone at this time and there is no way to tell it to your google navigator.
Any news about a god sat nav for ICS?
Still no news? Satnav is about the only thing I'm missing

Hi,
I just installed "NAVFREE".
I did not had a chance to proper test it just for a few miles. it is working but 'i did not liked the roots it took. just a bit of extra miles when rooting.
hope navigon will make a good version for SGN.
Navfree isn't great.. told me to take the 4th exit on a couple of roundabouts that only have 3 exits, and I needed the second :/

Try the free ones from MapQuest or Waze.
If you are following Sygic official tweeter, they said Sygic 4.0 will be released before the end of the year. It supports ICS.
In fact, you can go to their support forum to try the beta version.
I am using 3.0 version 11.2.2, it is a very good app. It has problem in the past with stability, but the latest version fixed it. Tested last weekend with 300 km driving, flawless.
Cant wait their ICS version!

GPS navigation apps

Hello all, I thought I would start a conversation about GPS navigation apps for the Galaxy Nexus.
So, I used CoPilot 8 on my Desire HD, but that has very outdated maps, so I wanted to buy a new one from Android market. I took the plunge and bought myself the CoPilot Live Premium Europe. That loaded up, unpacked some libs and crashed. DO NOT BUY. Luckily I got a refund.
So now to the question, which navigation app should I use with my Nexus? Any recommendations? I would like it to have the maps in internal memory unlike Google Navigation.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
NavFree - free and you can download maps and use them offline. Been using on iPhone as well - perfect.
Sygic FLEET v 8.30 also work ok on Galaxy Nexus but I don't know if is avalible for end users...
go whit Navigon Europe V4 download here : http://i9001.blogspot.com/p/aplications-tools.html
and Happy New Year To ALL 2012

No offline maps, can be quite expensive when going on vacation if you have to keep your data connection open all the time. Offcourse you can cache small parts but I prefer to have the complete offline maps of multiple country's.

Navigation

Hi guys
Is any one using inbuilt navigation which comes with galaxy s2 because I am not able to use it always it shows an error googles maps not yet available in this location
Can anyone suggest me any app that I can use in galaxy for navigation
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Hi,
I use waze for navigation. It works really well and it's free.
Personally i don't like the Maps with Navigation that comes with our phone in default. Aside from the ugly look, it always run in background( battery consuming). So I uninstalled it and instead used the Sygic Aura. It's really working good and has a very sleek U.I.
I use Navigon which is great because it gives me multiple routes to choose from and an ETA for each one plus road information so I know where there are delays, accidents or similar obstructions. The only downside is that it doesn't come in my language and that it's fairly pricy (45€).
My wife prefers Sygic Aura because it comes in or native language and has a simple interface (although geting to some options is a pain in the arse). It probably has some better features than my navigation but I'm too biased and love my Navigon. My wife on the other side hates it but we both prefer our apps to stock navigation.
Both options are IMHO way better than the stock option but they aren't free.
+1 on Sygic ive tried them all and that one is car far the best....I drove to Malaga ( spain ) from Wakefield ( UK ) last year and it didnt let me down once
I have a back up of navfree just in case and that works spot on as well
Navigon
Navigon is prety cool but a bit expensive :/
I used Navigon and Copilot, and the last one is better imo
ive used navigon(needs 3g to start) sygic had got a lot of fc's in ics 4.0.3 and copilot(didn't run on ics befor so am not running it) and my favorit...igo8 for android...runs on GB and ICS ,is an offline navigation ,maps can be updated any time you want ,just search google ,different skins can be installed ,2steps ahead arrow road turning points .can edit android windows mobile maps/voice/speedcams....1 minnor because it's an offline nav...there is no tmc ,so you have to listen to the radio a lot
mike
I use Navigon select, but today downloaded samsung navigator and maps of Scandinavia. Well, the app maybe good but I can't test it really, looks like even having offline maps, it still needs online services available. Looks like poi are only available online. Ah, this app is far away from usable.

Best GPS Navigation for Galaxy Nexus

Hello,
Does someone managed to make the iGO Navigation fit the screen of the GN?
If yes, can help me through? I just cant get to make it work properly.
Oh, and by the way, what GPS navigation do you use? GMaps is inferior compared with a dedicated GPS app like Sygic or other. Do you ppl agree?
Thanks!
I use sygic as its the best for android, used to use tom tom on my iPhone.

Only thing bad about Google Maps is that if you go off the preset route, you're stuck if you loose service.
You guys know about Google new off line map, that is coming.
http://androidcommunity.com/google-maps-offline-coming-soon-to-android-20120606/
I dont like GMaps because it give me the shortest route, wich sometimes are roads out of use and it isnt possible to select fastest route like in Sygic.
I used to have the same issue with Sygic, while I was in Bulgary and I found myself on a mountain farm, because the old route has to travel a mountain, road that was out of use for years ) so I set Sygic on the fastest route and there we go.
GMaps is fine, but It doesnt alarm you when you overcome the speed limit, it does have only english language and if you enter an area without signal, well that's the death of your assistant.
That's why I preffer a dedicated GPS application.
Did someone of you guys used iGO on GN?
If Google allows for offline turn by turn navigation and routing with their offline maps then I'll be happy, but being able to download maps and not be able to calculate a route without a data connection is just pointless.

Where did you hear this from? I had TomTom on my iPhone and it was the best Nav I've ever used!
However, currently without TomTom available for the GNex, I use the Navigation app that comes standard with the Nexus.

I just reroute often using Google nav since it easily shows the length and times of various routes. Traffic included which makes a huge difference.
I use both Sygic and Google Nav. I like Sygic because of its possibility to work offline and download any map I want.
When I was in Mexico, I used Sygic since I didnt have an active data connection and could easily download maps. I recently came across Route66 which is also a great free app and uses TomTom maps. The FollowUp feature is a bit of a gimmick but always impresses my fellow passengers when I mount it on the dash.Give it a shot if it is available in your country.

Google navigation caches so it continues to work, without a data connection, unless you leave the recommended route.

Navigation besides gmaps

Hi just curious if anyone runs other navigation apps besides Google maps. I know Google's is good but curious if there's better?
Thanks in advance
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium app which keeps crashing all the time. The HD app is much better why do I not use it!
=P Google Maps Does it all... would be lost without it and I'll never use any other =]
- Google
I use Sygic mostly because it works offline. It used to be quite bad but now it's acceptable, not amazing, but acceptable.
It's closer to a full fledged gps than google maps. Warns you when your speeding and some other nice features.

Sygic.
Offline navigation, reliability, speedy GPS lock.

I used Copilot before I had a data connection and honestly will probably continue to do so because it works so well. I've traveled all over the state with it.
Try Waze. Crowd sources for things like accidents, slow traffic, checkpoints, construction. Kind of a social driving tool with Nav.
+1 For CoPilot. It works well and they just updated the interface. I still use GMaps too..
Sygic is by far the best for android.
I use Google Maps when I have data available. If not, I use CoPilot. It's a great offline navigation app
I use google maps when im online and navfree for offline, but if google maps allows for offline navigation im gonna switch to only google maps.
Sygic +1
Navitel here. Works pretty well, but can't really compare it to Google navigation because it isn't available in my country.

+1 for Waze from me. You'll get a much smarter route that integrates traffic conditions and shows traffic cameras, speed traps, and the like

Sygic does this stuff as well along with speed cameras, and is cross compatible with the iPhone app. I've never tried Waze, no reason to add I've already paid for and am happy with Sygic, just saying those aren't reasons to choose Waze over Sygic.
Sent from my Cyanogenmodded GNex
I like Navigon personally. They're still getting it updated for ICS, but I think most everything is fixed. Sygic is nice and I like the map interface better, but I hate the search and POI part of it. It has a 'google' local search, but it rarely finds anything I'm looking for. You press 'a' and it starts to list every address close with an 'a' in it. It drives me crazy . Navigon's google search gives results like if you just searched on google.
+1 for co pilot. Its a pain if you keep changing roms but since I stopped doing that its great
