[Q] Flash Fascinate Rom - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This might sound like a stupid/noobie question, but is it possible to flash a Fascinate rom onto the Epic 4g without catastrophic nuclear disaster? I just thought, given that they are the same family of Galaxy S and are both CDMA, that it might be possible. Would the keyboard still work?
I am asking because i am trying to get my Epic to work on Verizon. Is there anything like the xv6900s where i can cook different carriers settings into roms?
Thanks in advance!

No, do not do this! Always make sure the rom you flash is compatible with the Epic. No other phone's roms will work on our phone.
I also do not think our phones are capable of working on verizon.

Flashing a Rom not for your phone is a great way to wind up with a technologically advanced paperweight.

Wow I wish we could do this. No don't flash any other rom to the epic other than want is on this forum

No, hell no, jesus christ DON'T DO IT!
If you want your Epic on a different network, that's not too difficult. Look around the web, there are guides.

[Q] metro pcs evo 4g question

had my evo flashed by a local metro dealer(full flash). He put the metro edition CM7 on the phone. However im trying to force one of metros new prl in order to get 3g. So on to the question since my ports wont show up on cm7 if i make a nand backup of my settings now switch to a sense rom so i can get the ports to show up for qpst force the prl then restore my backup will i have to run any scripts or willl i be right back where i was but with the new prl?
Did you try to re-designate your port.. meaning veiw the list of ports that's listed under "ports" in computer management, right click on the listed device, and go to properties, then advanced settings in the ports tab [I think its called that] and res designating it to com1 or one that's not in use.. and when you were in "qpst setup" did you click that little box that only allows you tto view certain ports? [I forgot the name mybad] that happened to me when I had to set up the ports.. give me the rundown on what you did and Ill try my best to help you out.. not many people here know how to use qpst.
Sent from my Random, old but still kickin, Epic 4g
I think he is asking if the prl changes when you nand-restore. Simple answer no, that really the most common way AOSP users change them out.
I am one of the many unfamiliar with qpst so I am not sure about this method 100%.
I ended up just flashing the sense rom so I could get the drivers to install properly. I was mainly concerned that if I switched roms it would make me lose web and mms. I was enable to switch and force the prl. And restore my backup without losing anything. To my surprise everything workwd when I was on the sense rom without running any web scripts or metrooff. I'm new to the device so was concerned but once someone else agreed I could do it I went ahead. Thanks for checking my thread though

Yea. It took me a while to fine someone that did a full flash. I had to go to the hood.lol. I was gonna do the Houdini at the store by me but they wanted more than the other place for the full flash. I just wish we could add esn's to the data base on our own then we could just do it all ourselves.

haha.. I'm with you on that one, that'd be awesome.
In thier defense though they probably make it like that so they can try to limi the number of people useing devices with bad esn's. So its probably a discretionary thing for the stores if they want to do. And im sure in some cases the people just might not know how to. But if metro would just step up the quality of the devices people wouldnt have to flash from oter carriers. However the esteem is pretty sweet we just gotta wait for metro to make some money so they can lower the prices of their 4g handsets.

so true.. their devices are pretty damn expensive, and not really worth the money if you ask me.. personally i'd pick boost over metro because it seems so much easier to go from an incognito to an evo 4g or epic 4g than its is to do it from metro.. and the service in my area is awesome .. but hey you cant beat the pretty damn low price of a no contract provider
Yea I almost made the switch to boost when I bought this evo. But they wanted 130 to flash and had to wait a month for some reason till my number could be in it. I wanted it for 3g but whenever I'm really using my phone app wise or browser I'm on wifi anyway. I still might do it down the road only time will.

im new here!

guys im fixing to buy a white galaxy s2, what should i be concern about? is the root method easy, kernels, roms, is there anything hiding from samsung? like im coming from the amaze, htc havent released the wifi drivers for it and have no s-off, just wondering if you guys has had any problems with this phone, and how is the development here is, is it dead or alive?
Well look around lol. Rooting is easy as pie, everything else is based on your preference. Many solid gingerbread roms and kernels here
Were on the brink of some great releases...thanks to a recent ics leak there are all kinds of rooms being cooked up. I'd say its a great time to buy one within a few weeks we should have some great ics roms.

You don't need to worry about s-off like HTC phones. Just put the phone in download mode and flash clockworkmod, then install whatever ROM you want. It is much to root easier than any HTC phone I have rooted. Samsung also has released all source code up to the latest update. No one has had problems besides the same that exist with all phones. As for development with the skyrocket leak of ICS it is heating up faster than a junkies spoon (see thread below)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1577041
thank you guys i just got the phone, love it so far, i think more than the amaze..
im new to samsung though, i know its totally different on rooting and such,
ill start downloading drivers and start rooting!
As someone previously said, development is on the cusp of being current with every other major device. The ICS leak for the AT&T SkyRocket is very crucial for us because the phones are nearly identical.
With that said, the GB roms are all solid but not AOSP with the exception of a couple Kanged CM7's. Not sure if they're working entirely however. There is an AOSP ICS which is what we all crave, but it's only partially working. The TouchWiz (Samsung stock/themed) ICS leak is almost perfect. We just need a native kernel to fix auto-rotation and the little bugs.
The phone's specs are among the best in the world right now lol. YOU WILL LOVE THIS PHONE, I have no doubt about it.
Also, feel free to PM me about any other questions you may have that aren't being answered.

Root and ROMs are great. However we don't have any good ICS kernels because we're still waiting on samsung
ok guys been playing around with some roms and stuff, like some of you said rooting this device was a peace of cake,
loved the megamix ICS rom, the only problem was roration and the calling echo witch you already know.
some of the fixes that i seen for the echo issue dont seen to help mine though,
now i have a question, why do we need a blaze modem?
this phone suppost to be one of the 42mgp of tmobile, if i recall the amaze, the galaxy s2, and now the blaze.

not sure if this has been said, but only flash t989 and i727 skyrocket stuff.
the blaze's modem is just another modem.... rado for HTC that may or may not strengthen your phone's signal. It all depends on your phone and location. I got spotty service here in socal with but when I do have reception.. it is faster. Just too spotty.

A few questions about rooting / ROMs on my new LTE coming from EVO 4G

I had my EVO 4G rooted and flashed ROM's. I just picked up the LTEvo. I know that it can be rooted very easily.
I suppose the same ROM's that are available for the 4G can be flashed on the LTE? Or are there specific ROM's for the LTE?
Can anyone recommend a ROM for the LTE that doesn't take away anything from the phone? Last several ROM's I used always had some kind of bug where the voicemail app didn't work or MMS didn't work, etc... I would like the hotspot feature though. Do I have to flash a ROM to take advantage of that or can I just root?
Thanks for the help is advance
First, wrong place to ask this! You should be asking about what ROM is best blah blah blah for the LTE in the EVO LTE area
Second, you can't flash an EVO 4G ROM on the EVO LTE....is not going to work no matter how much you want it to
BUT I did hear some good things about the Mean ROM.......alright I'm gonna go now!
GOOD LUCK!!!

Is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch the Sprint Galaxy S II?

I am hoping someone will be able to help me with this. I just got a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II and I do not see it on XDS anywhere. Is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch the Sprint Galaxy S II? The only S II phone I see on XDA is the Samsung Galaxy S II 19122 and it does not look like my phone in the picture. Even in the countless videos I have watched its not my phone. In fact I do not even think that the 19122 is not a Sprint phone. The Samsung Epic 4G Touch looks like my phone and its for Sprint. Which should I be using? What should I do??
Yes, sprint just just ditched the old branding. Only flash and root and do other stuff that says Epic Touch 4G, ET4G, or sprint galaxy s II

Thanks for your reply!! I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S 2 from Sprint. I am not a pro when it comes to rooting phones but I come from a EVO that I had rooted and flashed many roms. However my Galaxy S 2 has me stumped! I rooted it and it has not worked the way it should. I cant get my GPS to work on any ROM I have flashed. I have been through the forums, Google and anything else I could think of. I Have tried every app or fix idea I could find and still nothing. I am now at the point where I would like to unroot my phone and start over. I feel as if maybe I have done something wrong. However I cant find a video or directions how to unroot my phone back to stock and then to root it again. I know my phone came with ICS and all the videos or directions I find are from 2.3. What should I do?
Look up QBking 77 in the forum and that will lead you to You tube, he has the scoop on the Epic touch now the Samsung Gal.S 2.
Watch his stuff and decide which way you want to go.

Stop flashing and do A LOT of reading before you hard brick. This phone is nothing like the evo, recovery changes with every kernel, rom manager does not work, there is a super brick bug that will completely kill this phone with no way to fix. You need to slow down and research before you do anything else.

You don't have to fear change...leave that to my dad! lol. Anyway, QBKing77 has been an amazing resource, lots of great YouTube stuff, start slow and careful and you won't brick it. Leave the EVO to collect dust.
Its not hard once you get an understanding of what's what. There are alot of variants of the gs2 and quite a few ppl have flashed stuff meant for other versions which will kill usb-pc connection. And there are safe and unsafe kernel/recoveries to use, unsafe kernel and a factory reset in recovery will trigger the brick bug and you get the blue light of death(dead phone) Read the stickies in the sub forums of this section, search info for epic 4g touch as that's what this phone is(was) called and what all the info is listed under in forums. Just slow down and take some time to inform yourself before you do something and want to kick your own ass for rushing. I'm not new to rooting and Modding, and I read for 3 days before I even thought about rooting when I came from my og evo. Patience is key when doing things to your phone that don't come out of the box. Think of it like a car, you wouldn't strap a supercharger on it and then go race down a strip without doing some research first, right? Once you get a little education on the device under your belt you'll be flashing like you were on the evo, its just a different process with a learning curve. That's the way it is when changing devices, all firmware, even tho android based, is slightly different with its own quirks you'll need to understand.

I just back tracked all my steps and found that I did follow QBKing77 directions for root and recovery using odem. I downloaded and flashed the roms from XDA. As of now I do not see that I did anything wrong. I will try to give this phone another try, if I cant unroot or get it to work then it will just be a paper weight. Thanks for your help and advice.

Thanks for the advice, I will do more reading and see what I can find. However at this point I am positive that I have followed all the correct steps. This is why this is driving me crazy. I just dont know what I will do if I cant get this phone to work. Thanks again.
Trust me, I know everyone is saying read, and read some more, but that's really all you have to do. Just go over to the General side, and read the first 3 pin-ups. That helped me a lot, and all the wonderful people on these forums, and also qbking77. I rooted my friends htc device, and I must say, rooting and flashing on this device is A LOT easier! Hope you don't brick, and good luck!
I don't understand why people are answering your question the way they have so far. From what I understand, all you wanted to know was what the deal was with this phone and is it a S2 or not.
Here's what you need to know.
This the Samsung Epic 4G Touch. It is the same specs as the other Samsung Galaxy SII, but it has it's own custom board and firmware because it's CDMA and Sprint. Why couldn't Sprint users just get a CDMA version of the regular Galaxy SII all of Europe uses? Because, it's from the U.S., and in the U.S. big companies try to make life as hard as possible for their customers while treating them like cattle. So in short, the Epic Touch is close to the same thing as a Galaxy S2, but it isn't compatible with normal S2 software or development.
The model name of the Epic Touch 4G is SPH-D710. As long as you refer to the phone as the SPH-D710 there should never be any confusion.
What do you want to do with your phone?
If you want to root it, you'll need to know what build you are running. Are you on EL26, FF18, or FH13?
If you want to flash it to a custom rom, which one? There are several good ones, most notably CM9 which reached Beta status earlier this month.
Do you want to install recovery?
well Epic touch is S2 for sprint and its called Samsung sprint epic 4g touch , better than the other s2s out there , bigger better screen and stuff
about rooting
i was in the same boat mate
u can say still am
came from VZN fascinate - the best brick proof phone i have ever used , lol flashed it with my eyes closed like 50 times a day ;P
anyways S2 is tricky : sincere suggestion
Reda a bit before touching
and never flash anything just for the heck of it , make sure if what you are going to do is in fact right ? ask around and dont give into the temptation of flashing just like that , again its a SINCERE SUGGESTION.
as far as basic rooting and flashing is concerned
first use the oneclick odin stock rooted ROMS, use them see what you really need if u are on GB or ICS
then look for the particular ROM with them features
will add more for you

Kernels Between Carriers

It seems obvious that a Verizon user can't flash a Sprint ROM (Although I admit I don't know exactly why unless S3 ROMS have PRL, PRI, NV, etc in them, too) but can a Sprint user flash a kernel for the S3 that he found on, say, a forum for Verizon S3 users?
Also, as long as I'm asking, CWM was not a good Recovery for the Evo and TBH, I don't really like it now. How much better is TWRP?? Does it handle back-ups and restores better?? I have to think it does since CWM just makes a single image without being able to select what components you actually want to back up

I wouldn't flash anything unless it's for Sprint, some have reported they do work but rotations are upside down..
The Evo most certainly had cwm for a recovery as its the recovery my wife used on her Evo, you might be talking about the Evo lte but I'm 85% sure they have cwm also since its the most popular recovery out there.. the newer versions of twrp have been giving some people problems with backups and restores lately so if you go with twrp go with an older version... 2.3.3.0 is rock solid...

I would advice against it. I haven't tried it myself, but I have read about a few people that have flashed Kernels not for their Carriers. It did not turn out well. I do not know if that's the rule, or the exception. Just know that I would not do it. As for CWM on the SGS3. I have yet to have any issues with it. It is a far cry from the OG EVO days. Much improved IMO.
Kernel's are individual for each carrier. The components and file locations are all different. You will end up with a brick in most cases. This is for the GSIII we are speaking of. Other devices such as the Galaxy Nexus shares kernel across all carriers.

OK, thanks, guys.
@flastnoles11 of course the Evo had CWM. But that was the worst recovery for the Evo, since it didn't wipe properly and the Evoi is a very temperamental device when it comes to proper wipes before flashing a ROM.
On a side-note, I really HATE when people say something like you did when you wrote "The Evo most certainly had cwm for a recovery as its the recovery my wife used on her Evo, you might be talking about the Evo lte but I'm 85% sure they have cwm also since its the most popular recovery out there".

There's a pretty good chance that I know what I'm talking about and wasn't making a mistake.
Sorry for the rant. It's just one of my pet peeves. No disrespect intended. Just unfortunately using you as a scapegoat here
I just came from the evo 4g LTE.. There's a cwm recovery for it but it dont work at all.. It messes with misc partition.. So the only recovery thats works for the evo LTE is twrp.. I had the evo 4g.. Then the evo 3d.. Then evo 4g lte.. Now jumped ship to samsung!!

Well as you said, there was cwm for it and in your original post you said there wasn't, I was just pointing out that there was.... If you don't want to be corrected, don't make false statements!

Ahh, my bad. That was typo. It was supposed to say CWM wasn't a good recovery for the Evo....

Glad you jumped ship to Samsung HipKat. The SGS3 is a beast. As for CWM, vs TWRP. Like I said previously, CWM IMO is better than TWRP on the SGS3. But that's just from experience. Tried them both and CWM came out on top.
