I have had a HTC Legend for about a year now, which I think is a bit too small with it´s 3.2" display.
My plan was to buy HTC Sensation when it will be released.
But I have been thinking and I don´t like the size these new multicore phones.
The old HTC Desire is perfect in screeen and size. And has good hardware IMO. enough for me since I don´t play games alot.
My question is:
Is it stupid of me to buy a HTC desire in perspective of future updates.
i will root my phone and install custom roms. But I´m not sure for how long developers will update and develop these roms.
Support from htc will definitely stop after gb has been rolled out this summer, but as for developers we will probably have good support for another year.
Some developers is moving towards sensation though, so there is no way to know.
Well, the problem always stays. Whenever you purchase a new phone, you can be sure of it that within a month there'll be a new one.
About the updates, there's also the custom roms that'll keep bringing new stuff as long as it's possible within the hardware of the Desire.

As a Legend owner ? Quite.
If you're looking to move away from the legend, then why would you go to the desire from the same generation. Surely it would make more sense to move to the desire S if you must move away?

For a number of reasons.
The physical size is almost the same, which I want.
Larger screen, which is better for my thumbs when typing.
Faster CPU (1GHz is perfect for me since I get annoyed with the lag from the Legend).
I want physical buttons for Home, Menu, Back and Search.
Almost the same price in the second hand market, differs about $50-70 here.
So my plan is to sell my HTC Legend and buy a Desire.
And then wait for a let´s say "Sensation" with smaller screen and physical size.
Ok, I can see your reasoning, the only reason I was suggesting the S is that it is the same size as the desire, just with quite a lot of hardware updates, not least the front camera so you can (once it gets rolled out to more than the nexus S) use google video chat and such.
If you're looking into second hand then I guess yes the desire is much cheaper than the desire S would be.
and the bootloader of desire s is locked, so you can't install custom roms which, in my eyes, is a huuuge minus.
I'd stick with the desire. It is a over year old, but it still is a decent phone and I think / hope, it'll be worked and tweaked on for some time coming.

Getting a new phone at end of August, one that will need to last me two years. I know a phone usually goes out of date within a year but I'd like a phone that will make a decent attempt at staying in, via updates or whatever.
I'm really attracted to the Desire, but it is already 6 months old and I am worried that the hardware is already out of date. Should I get the Desire or should I start looking at some of the newer phones to continue the next two years?
If you think I should look at other phones, please suggest them. I also have my eye on the SGS, but the dev community behind the Desire (and the lack of apparent bugs on it, the SGS is fraught with them) keeps pulling me back to the Desire.
Chances are, there will be an 18 month contract out in August, so it might not be too bad.
Id recommend the Desire, but then again, better Android phones might be out by then so only time can tell.

Hmm, I'd rather stick to a 24 month plan as it is generally cheaper to do so.
Of course, if another amazing phone comes out in the next month then I'd reconsider, but as for now that's unlikely and choice for me is really coming down to the Desire vs the SGS.
I really like the community behind the Desire, and if people are going to stay behind it for a long time to come, I will most probably get the Desire. On the other hand, if the Desire's life is 'coming to an end' with the Desire HD and SGS coming out, and if people think the SGS is the 'next big thing', I might just get the SGS instead.
I think a 24 month plan would leave you stick with the same phone for too long.
1.5 Ghz Snapdragons are scheduled to be released till the end of the year, and dual cores are expected in the first half of next year.
1 Ghz snapdragon is still the high end category, but not for too long.
If you really want the Desire, wait a little more, and you might get one with a super amoled screen.....
Personally, I'd choose one of the new or upcoming droid(s) now.

There won't be any super amoled Desires, HTC are going to use a SLCD. (or a similar name)

I'm still a student and the phone I get will have to last me two years. Unless I win the lottery, of course.
I havent really heard of any new phones that are "Major game changers" recently, Unlike the desire which I had discovered well before it was even called that! I think all the companies have brought out there major hardware for this year anyway, X10, Galaxy S, Desire, Nexus One, Only other thing I can think of is Dell Streak and Motorola's new phone, When ever that comes to the UK if at all judging by the Milestone delay.

I can't speak for the Desire but I do have an SGS and am fairly happy with it. To me it seams, yes, there are many bugs still and it's far from perfect, and the dev community for SGS isn't so big yet. However, there have been a massive amount sold already and they expect a lot more sales, so that is bound to grow.
Also, it seems Samsung is working their ass off to get things fixed, and are dev-friendly (easy root, APIs, etc) We have new leaked firmwares now every few days. But will it fix everything? I had to face the same decision 3 weeks ago and went SGS.
So what to advise ? I wouldn't at the moment. If the SGS were operating perfectly I would definitely advise it over the Desire (I personally fell for the specs), but such is not the case.
The best advise I can give is, you still have a couple of weeks... postpone the decisions until more information is available, and SGS has had more fixes

Thanks for your input, probably the best I've had in a while. I definitely got that impression about Samsung and how they seem to be acknowledging the dev community. If this is truly the path they are taking and the community is willing to take the bait (why not, it's a great piece of hardware) then the SGS will definitely be a great phone.
I suppose I'll take a break for 3 weeks and reaccess the situation then. My brain is still thinking a LOT about this though and it's hard to shut it off!

HTC Ace
I have the Desire, and it's great. Rumoured HTC Ace (aka HTC Desire HD) coming in October ... bigger screen, more on board storage, HDMI out, same 1Ghz processor.
As much as I love my phone (even more now that it's rooted to Froyo), I would be tempted to hold off a couple of months to see what appears.
Kinda obvious it is dead. I fell down the stairs and as a reflex i tried to grab onto something and dropped my phone. It bounced off the wooden stairs 2 times before hitting the ground. Now my entire screen is white when i start up my phone and when i try pressing i get more and more black tearing through my screen. I guess its gone and theres nothing i can do? Had the phone for not even a year..
Also a question. Whats a nice replacement for the Rodium? I always used energy roms so going back to a simple phone is a no no for me. So i want to know any suggestions of what to get next. Should i wait till something new comes out later this year/next year or get a existing model thats out right now?

The HTC Desire Z looks really nice, and its releasing to Europe soon (or already has?). Its a worthy successor to the TP2. Android, but a nice hardware slider keyboard, and other great specs.

Perhaps you can replace the screen either from the warrenty or by yourself. However if this is not a route you want to go down then, like the reply above, id suggest the desire z. Having used the htc desire I can say it's really good. You could also consider the normal desire or the desire hd (bigger screen) which are thinner, if a hardware keyboard is not an absolute must.
Thanks guys. The Desire Z really looks good. I always like keyboards on my phone ever since the pro 2. I always tend to mess up my typing with a touch screen keyboard. My phone providers contract renews in november but i dont want to pay myself crazy for a contract so for now i will go for the HTC Wildfire with my provider so i wont have to pay that alot for extra SMS and online internet since its a more budget phone.
Release date that i can find for HTC Desire Z is end october or November here in the The Netherlands. Probaly will want to buy the Desire Z separate at the end of november since its hard to live without a keyboard. Then again the Desire HD looks better spec wise.. Just no keyboard.
This is probaly will keep me thinking for a while. But they both seem great choices so it will probaly be the HTC Desire HD or the HTC Desire Z. But definately will be one of the 2.
Also will see if can get a HTC Touch pro 2 replacement.. If you dont try then you dont know. Only had the bloody phone for a bit longer then 6 months before it went on a rollercoaster ride.

so I pretty much decided I'm getting the HTC Desire over the Nexus one, but now with the Desire HD's release about 1 month away I'm debating whether or not to wait.
To be honest I'm in love with the HD's huge screen and looks, but looks alone don't cut it for me. I plan to jump on board the modding/rooting community as soon as I can (just starting out atm) and the Desire is the better choice when it comes to that since its been rooted and messed around with already.
I just worry that I will have to wait a very long time for the Desire HD to be rooted successfully, or it will turnout to be hard to hack and play with like the Nexus one and Desire as I want to try my hand at some hacking myself.
what do you think I should do?

If I were you I'd take the HD, but after hTC's stunt with the T-Mobile G2, I'm not so sure at all. If you really want to customise your phone properly, then your best bet would be the Desire.
I'm after the HD now, as i'm a phone whore. So if you want a Desire £230 if you fancy it, unbranded, used but never damaged. Screen mint, phone mint. PM if your interested.

definetly a Desire. A guy at work got one today and i was well jelous until i saw it in the flesh.
The screen is bigger but the resolution isnt much higher than the desire resulting in a big average screen.
Obviously the cloud features are a benifit but no doublt a custom rom will turn up with them on sooner or later.
Aye. supposedly we're going to get the HD sense package for our desires in December too! w00t.

I have a Desire and wanted a Desire HD. Until I noticed, it's not the hardware I want. It's the software.
I think the design of the Desire is better.
I also like the physical buttons more. (My mom got a Wildfire, I had using it cause I always accidently hit the capatative buttons).
I think the size is perfect. Sometimes I feel like I wouldn't mind if the Desire was bigger. At other times when using with 1 hand, I find it a bit big.

oh yeah, i heard that this feature was on the motorola Droid, had no idea HTC did that same thing to the G2. While the phone will most likely be sold here unbranded and unlocked, since I got Legend which was exclusively sold by vodaphone unbranded and unlocked, i think it will most likely be a built-in hardware feature regardless of whether or not its exclusive to a certain carrier. that seems to be the on going trend right now with HTC and other manufacturers.

at the moment the Desire seems to be the better choice for me, i was considering the HD version based purely on physical looks. after seeing the HD2 in person i loved the huge screen and i thought the Desire HD will be like a buffed up android version of the HD2. i know the Desire will eventually get the updated Sense UI so i have no worries regarding the software.
As for the camera, 5MP is good enough for me when i want to take pictures on the go, otherwise i bring along a real camera with me. I don't think phone cameras are good enough to replace an actual camera just yet.

I want to jump on the band wagon here cos im in the same boat, and this thread has thrown a spanner in the works!!
Ive currently got a rooted hero but lack the power from a 1ghz amongst other things....ive played in length with the Desire and genuinely love it, but its knocking on a bit now so am tempted to hold out for the Desire HD as the price is only £100 diff.
What are we saying about the new HD ? Is it likely to going to be a ball ache to do what the desire already does well.....dont get me wrong ill wait for the dev work to catch up but obviously if theres **** hard coded designed to prevent rooting is it gonna be worth it?
also im going unbranded this time....if that makes a difference (aside from the obvious lack of network restrictions!)

I can call HTC's distributor here and ask them when exactly the device will release here and how much it will be for. When i was comparing between the Nexus and Desire the price was almost the same but now there is obviously going to be a significant price difference.
I guess for me now it all comes down to the price and customization ability.
I've checked the Desire HD's forums and there seems to be a temporary root solution for it at the moment. Looks like they are still working on it.

Hi all,
I am thinking of getting one for my wife...however, I have been told the internal memory isn't a lot. Specially for games and apps. So just wanted to know if this really is a problem in a long run.
I quite like the screen size and the screen particularly, it's bright and beautiful.
Also, if I buy it now, some where in February, what OS version should i expect, upgradeable to what? I am not much is flash fanatic, so i am not going that way at all...
And also could someone be kind enough to sum up the pros and cons in less than a minute...

I would suggest to look for a better phone if you have the budget. Although a great hardware in its time, Desire is old and is obsolete now (it hurts me too say it but that's the truth. ). The last official Android version is Gingerbread. If you are not going to root and s-off, you will definitely have to complain about the memory storage.

just what I was afraid of...thanx a lot buddy...but the use it going to be moderate to low-heavy..like simply put, for games and all...nothing over the top...and some apps of course...
and as I am writing this, I am comparing it with the Desire S...it looks wayyy better...so what would you suggest? Desire S or Incredible. I don't have the budget for the Incredible honestly...but any known issues with the Desire S?
Yeah better a Desire S than the original Desire. Although I'm not quite sure if it will get an ICS upgrade in the future.
Game files right now are getting larger so Desire isn't really up to the task of storing several games plus other apps at once specially if you intend not to root it.

The main issue with the Desire S, however, is a hardware bug: some shipments have been plagued by random reboots. Some people even had to have their devices replaced 3 to 4 times until finding a stable unit. So if you decide to buy an S, please make sure you have at least SOME warranty left.

So long story short I would recommend you a Samsung Galaxy S Plus. The Motorola DEFY+ is also quite good.

Thank you for your reply...If only you could tell me how to look for those issue-infected devices...like for ex. the Droid Razrs that were a pre-release units had a bad screen, date - 26th Oct...so is there a way to find out BEFORE purchasing a phone, manuf. date, make-country, etc...

Today if I wanted to buy new HTC, it would be Sensation (not that XL or XE - I see just marketing move of HTC under these). I think it's the best HTC you can buy today.
As it was already said, Desire is too old today and in case of stock settings (no root or S-OFF) the memory status is really painful.

Maybe you could augment that statement with the fact QSD8250 is year 2008 piece of hardware.
Get the newer Desire S.

Can't agree with this. Hot on heavy usage, maybe. But reboots? Seems like you have faulty software/hardware.

I would if i could, but there's actually no way to tell. As i've already said, the reboots are completely random and HTC's solution for these is a mainboard replacement.
I don't know where the Desire S has been/is being made. The Desire was made in either China or Taiwan. My GF's Desire is made in Taiwan and it's visibly better built than mine, which is made in China. Both are PVT-4. So if that's also true for the S, i'd advise you to buy a Taiwan-made one.
I love my HTC Desire more than any phone I have ever had. I baught it the day it came out, and I have not had any trouble with it ever since. I have used CM since 6.x version and I love the product. It has kept me up to date without having to upgrade my phone.
Now im testing out some of the ISC versions that works on my phone, still I feel that the hardware is now not enough for me, (including cam- quality, and especially internal memory and processor speed).
So I wonder what phone should I consider if I decide to buy a new phone? Or should I wait for something extraordinary to come on the market?
Wait for HTC Edge or Ville. I also came to conclusion that I want better GPU and better camera. For 2-year-old phone Desire is still unbelievable competitive.

Those two phones looks amazing, especially the Edge with the quad-core. Hope the camera could be a reasonably replacement for a digital camera. I havent seen many phones that can match the flash that regular digital cameras have.
I am more devoted to stay with HTC after I saw they have the HTCdev.com .
Was considering to look into some of the samsung- phones, but I feel its a bit more plastic than HTC.

After experimenting with launchers and AOSP I have always come back to Sense. That's why HTC is my next phone.
i got the galaxy nexus, but i still use the desire, its just more fun playing with different roms & mods

but it is reasonable to wait for HTC Edge
if you buy the Samsung I bought a samsung galaxy nexus
Just be a few weeks until the next set of HTC phones will be released at MWC. I would wait until after then - something might grab you, or if not, the current phones should come down in price. This is the worst time to buy just now!

Just be a few weeks until the next set of HTC phones will be released at MWC. I would wait until after then - something might grab you, or if not, the current phones should come down in price. This is the worst time to buy just now!

after my htc desire I may switch to the htc sensation
though...i also like the size and look of it very much
having a tablet some of the 'new-power-devices' features are not required
i may even go back to a smaller phone next time...so having more a 'telephone' than a small supercomputer
I was htc fan for many years now..but also considering a samsung as my next android phone
I think I will wait for the next great HTC phone. Now that I have Sandvolds ICS I can float a bit longer. And now that I have an extra partition I can install lots of stuff. The ICS is a bit buggy, bit hopefully it will become complete. Sandvold is doing a great job. Recommend it for everyone !
