[Q] Stock HTC RSS reader (news 1.0) - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to find a way to acquire the stock evo RSS reader. I made the switch to CM7 but I haven't found a RSS reader I enjoy. I was happy enough with the stock app save for a few details. Anyone know where I can dl the apk to reinstall it?

The one for sense ? I'm pretty sure like any other sense app is not going to work on cm7

Have you tried Pulse? It's got a rather sleek UI and has decent feed management capabilities.

I'm not sure that its a sense app. It is a stock HTC app though so it's entirely possible that it has something to do with sense. Either way if it isn't part of the sense UI I want it back. I did try pulse a few months back and if I'm remembering it correctly, it has a windows phone theme to it. Either way I wasn't overly impressed.
Not sure if there are a lot of ex blackberry users here, but if anyone's used viigo on blackberry, that's more or less what I'm looking for. A good, simple, RSS reader. The preloaded app on the evo was close enough for me.

Here is a list of all the preloaded applications on the Stock EVO: http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/05/sprint-apps-and-other-software-preinstalled-on-the-htc-evo-4g.html
Do any of those apps ring a bell? If we can establish which app it is you're looking for it'll be easier to get an apk.
Edit: If it's the news app I'll search around and see if I can find it.

I tried a number, including Pulse and ended up settling on RSS Demon. I've liked it a lot so far.
SWYPED from my Evo with Eternal Prophecy 5.9 ROM. Yeah I said Swyped.

So far,, I need my news reader to have scrollable widget in adw/launcher pro. Scrollable widget and atom rss are alright but pulse news widget is the best, I had to pay 1.47 for it but it has allot of options.

There are 2 news apps preloaded, news/weather and news. I'm looking for "news" - the preloaded RSS reader.

[Q] Note widget like Sense?

I really enjoyed the note widget that came with Sense, but now I'm on the Kingdom Rom which didn't come with it. I searched around the market and the closest one I could find was Whiteboard, but it doesn't let me draw directly on the home screen. Any ideas?
Add Widget>Get More HTC Widgets>Notes.
Edit: Didnt See That You Tried It Already.
Is it possible that we can install the apk from a stock sense rom?
I used the task widget one and now I am forgetting stuff. lol. My phone runs my life.
Yeah I went through the HTC Hub and I only found the Word of the Day, Daily Challenge, and Fortune Cookie. I do enjoy the Daily Challenge, but I still miss my HTC Notes
I was wondering that as well. Unfortunately, I don't have the skillset to try to extract the widget from an earlier version of Sense.

Friendstream and HTC News - shortcomings

As someone who has happily used CM-based roms including Miui for quite some time, the newer versions of Sense certainly pique my interest. However there are two (perceived) shortcomings of Sense that keep me on AOSP. On Friendstream can you use it as a complete Facebook/Twitter replacement that allows you to see your full News feed, allowing you to get caught up on all posts since the last time you logged in? I don't want to have to install additional FB or Twitter apps to do what I feel FriendStream should do. Also, and a biggie for me, I'm an avid Google Reader user but for the life of me I can't get HTC News to sync fully with Reader, again allowing me to catch all missed RSS posts since the previous visit or sync. I do the above in AOSP land today with JustReader and Seesmic. I know I could install both in Sense as well but I prefer to keep my installs slim and would defeat the purpose of using Sense in the first place, a la scrolling Widgets. Ok enough of my blabbering.

LOL - OK the silence speaks volumes. Sense apps can't do what I need them to do. AOSP / CM7 FTW!

Which Weather app is fastest with reasonable details

I have tried multiple weather apps and most are slow as you click the widget to see the details. I wonder which one is fastest among these apps?
Eye in the sky weather.

I like weather bug. The widgets are reasonably fast and their network of weather sensors is great in my area. I have one about a mile from my house so I know the temperatures I see on my phone are correct. Other apps I have used did not have sensors near so their readings were always off from what I was seeing on my actual thermometer.
I use WeatherBug Elite. It's really fast, accurate, and has alerts. I love it.
Eye in Sky is excellent. Fanastic UI, fast - really nice to use. I don't use it any more though because the weather forecasts/predictions were a little off here in Australia - some times up to 5 degrees off. As soon as this is fixed, hopefully by allowing weather data to be pulled from multi sources (for us Aussies the BOM is best) I will be reinstalling it straight away.
No love for beweather??? I've been using it forever and I like it more than anything mostly because of how it looks and performs. There's a paid version which includes widgets I believe and free version to try it out. I have paid version and the widgets looks pretty awesome.

I really want a weather widget myself and prefer rings digital clock widget but reviews say that it crashes on 4.2
I love fancy widgets. It's always accurate enough for me and has my favorite skins. So much customization you can make it whatever you want it to be.
I think it really depends on where you live. I used weatherbug in NY an now use eWeather HD in San Antonio, TX. I also use 1weather for my notifications even though eWeather has that option. I also use skymotion to check rain in the immediate area.
Everyone brings up a good point. It depends on where you are. I think accuracy is more important than speed. Whatever works for your area.

I have been really happy with weatherbug elite. I also like notification weather pro for a quick forecast.
This not a "weather' app but I use it all the time. Especially in the summer. Damn t-storms.
Raindar. It is old but works great. Launch it and it goes straight to a radar. I have had it set to launch by double tapping with nova launcher. App has settings for storm tracks and info.
Another app that does the tracking of storms but better is storm eye.
I also enjoy the always overlooked stock news and weather app. The sliding graph with temp and precipitation chance is great.
I've been reviewing a whole bunch of popular Android weather apps over on Google+.
The best UI is Eye in Sky but as others have already noticed, the weather provider used isn't very accurate, which is a real shame. Also, the guy who develops it doesn't have much time to spend on it at the moment so I'm not sure updates are going to be forthcoming.
So far I've looked at Google Now, AccuWeather, WeatherBug, WeatherPro, UK Weather, Eye in Sky and I have lots more to cover (including Yahoo!, Met Office and others). The one I'm currently using is HD Widgets. Not only are the widgets excellent, with a big selection of sizes, styles, tablet and 4.2.1 lockscreen support, but you can choose from three different weather providers. I heartily recommend it. Not sure it's free though...
The most accurate so far is between Google Now and UK Weather. The former is obviously UK only though. I wish there was a Holo-style widget for Google Now Weather... that would be awesome.
The biggest providers for other apps seem to be Yahoo!, AccuWeather, WeatherBug and Weather Underground. Most weather apps seem to use one of these so finding one that lets you choose is a real benefit as accuracy may depend on your country.

Sounds like you've done a bit of work.
Have you looked at Weatherzone or PocketWeather yet? Both are really nice. :good:
I'm always after new suggestions. But I do need to stop at some point and see if there is a clear winner!
So far though it's quite frustrating as some apps are accurate with a crappy UI or awful widgets, whereas others look amazing but their accuracy blow. Finding something that is good at both is harder than you think.
HD Widgets are experimenting with a new theme that looks like Chronus/cLock/Climaticons/Eye in Sky which could well be "the one" but if someone works out how to get a Google Now card into a choice of light or dark Holo widgets then I think I could stop looking.
PocketWeather and Weatherzone seem to be Australia-only though so not much use to me here in the UK.

Looking for App, Calendar and Gallery Widget

Hey all,
I recently flashed the cyanogen 11 on my HOX. Just well it lacks a proper gallery (just like the sense one!) widget and a proper calendar widget.
So anyone have suggestions for good replacements?
I found several gallery widgets but they all seem to be badly written on the IO end. Or have some bad UI control which makes you want to throw it out the window so yeh.. ideally would be the HTC Sense one as it's perfect for my needs.
Calendar wise, again the HTC sense one is perfect.. so any that works exaclty like that would be awesome
Do note I also have my tablet flashed with CM11.. and kinda have the same issues.

Installing widget from quite old HTC phone

My first smartphone was an HTC Inspire (aka Desire). It has this great home screen flip clock widget I really miss. I want to put it on my Galaxy Note 10.
I know I can get flip clocks from the Play Store, but they are not as pleasing to look at and I don't want it enough to risk dealing with ads and phonehomeware. The old HTC widget is from HTC and is part of the manufacturer's native system app (no ads, YAY). I extracted the apk ok, but I'm reluctant to install it in my new phone because I almost bricked my Galaxy Note 4 trying to install downloaded Google phone apk. It locked up the phone and I had to do a system reset. It took me two days to get it all working like I want. I don't want to go through that again.
I believe the HTC Android version is 2.3 or 3.3. Is there a way to verify that this widget apk will work on the Note 10 besides installing it? Thanks in advance for any help.
I can not really help you, but, be advised of this: some really old apps cause troubles, as they were coded in a different way, some elements needed for their correct functioning might not even be present now, some older apps dont even install, or run,
Some other do install, and run, but eventually start doing odd things or freezing the device, this I have experimented with several good apps I liked from gingerbread and ice cream, even kitkat, so, better look for newer alternatives, imho

This has ads, but you can pay to get rid of them. There are others that have a similar flip-cloxk format.

I use the free version of this one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ock&pcampaignid=APPU_1_zcc-X4KlMsP6sAWnvYTYBQ
Low power consumption, very custom configurable plus has quad touch switches that you can assign apps too.
Adjustable size, colors, fonts, transparency and more.
Runs well with no data usage (adware) after being configured. I'm running Pie.
You can't get the clock widget off the old Desire as it is part of the HTC Sense home screen. You can only find something similar on the app store...
Sorry...
However, I use Beautiful widgets (paid app) and you can get quite a few flip clocks that look and feel like the old HTC's...

My understanding is that the flip clock widget is part of the HTC Clock app. I extracted the apk for that. I've not yet transferred the apk to my Note 10. I'd like to know if there's some way other than just installing to verify that it will not damage my Note 10.
Thanks, I checked out Beautiful Widgets. Even the paid version has full internet access, bluetooth, and near field communications. Why a clock widget would need that is beyond me. I'm concerned about security and unnecessary internet access, which is one reason why I'd prefer the old HTC widget. It also has the most captivating rendering of a classic flip clock that I've seen.
If anyone has a spare and sacrificial phone they don't mind resetting to factory specs if necessary, I'm willing to share the apk I extracted if you want to see if it works.

Lol, wanted lab rats. If your OS load is over 6 months old a refresh isn't a bad idea especially if you had a lot apps you uninstalled.
Be ready to do a factory reset at any time even though it's rarely neeeded it can happen.
After being force to do 2 back to back on my Note it's getting to be 2nd nature. Best load ever now.
That said it probably won't crash the OS and the worst that will happen is you'll be forced to uninstall it.
That happen with one or two of my Kitkat era apks.
Sometimes they will run ok.
