Full Screen Pop-Over Ads... - About xda-developers.com

Are full screen pop over ads going forward the new norm on xda? If so i guess we just have to live w/ it, but ads like this are incredibly annoying...

Happened to me the first time I logged in today but thats it.

I've gotten it on my phone and on my computer the last few days...

Are you talking about accessing xda on a laptop or on a phone's browser/app? Its happened to me viewing the web version from my phone. Really annoying.

I have seen this on so many tech sites lately. I am just doing the nasty thing and using ad-block for chrome. I wouldn't use it if the ads weren't as intrusive but these are just silly.

You are using chrome.. is there no AdBlock-Addon??

Never seen that
// this message is nonsense 5/8. I need to get "search in thread".

All the forum sites are using pop up ads, flash, etc. these days, and it freezes the browser momentarily at times.
That's why I use Tapatalk-based Android apps like this one.
Too bad I can't see all the fancy signature blocks, etc. but I can see & reply to messages quickly.

It just annoys me when I am reading xda on my computer, I understand why they do it, I still don't like it.

We are not choosing to put pop-over ads on XDA. If you see them, please screenshot them and send it to "svetius".

Full screen ads on my Gingerbread Nook Color are a total fail! I usually don't mind ads, but this is going too far.

Please read my post above. We hate these too, but we need a screenshot to know what you are seeing. Else how can we get rid of it?

How's this screenshot from my DroidX Dolphin HD browser (flash suppressed)?
And here's another from my Desktop PC:

Yeah, this totally sucks, and could be a reason for me to not visit XDA. When I'm viewing this on a phone, it's ridiculously tedious to close the damn thing down on a small screen.

Yes it's from an app. I had the same problem with a Go Launcher theme I was running.
Use this to find the offending app, and uninstall it.
I had that problem a few times. There are a few apps that do it. After the first couple I started paying attention to reviews even more.

I think status bar ads are absolutely unacceptable.

Unethical as well... you can delete an email, block a call, purge a text, but you have to use another program to detect an offending air push POS app, then go through the hassle to freeze it or remove it! I make it a point to email "ads" to let them know they WONT get my business because of the way they advertised to me.

I think I got malware or a app triggering notification ads.

I am getting two ads a day in my Notification Bar. It's odd because I don't download anything from the market that looks suspicious. I also read the comments for everything I download. Does anyone know of a way I can figure out what app is pushing these ads or if there is a app that will scan my phone for malware?

It's probably just some ad sponsored app. Just get AdAway and all your problems are solved.

My wife and I both have SGS3's and she is constantly getting these apps/widgets that pop up on her home screens yet are not in her app drawer and these are not apps that she downloaded. Anyone else experience anything similar and is there a way to block these apps?? Thanks

Get airpush from playstore it will tell you what app is causing it
sent via galaxy s3 on jelly bean
If you find the offending app, you can opt out of their push notifications via a website depending what company is pushing the spam on you. I honestly forget which company it was ... you'll have to go to the playstore and find the offending app and check out the description. I know one of them had instructions on how to opt out.
Wont work for all of them, but you might get lucky.
There is also an airpush opt out app in the playstore as well.

Is my phone infected with spyware?

Hello All,
I started to get advertisements under my "notification" bar. Sometimes I would get a notification, and it is like advertising for something, and when I click on it, it attempt to access the webpage ( which I declined to continue). Is the fact that i'm getting these advertisements mean that my phone is infected with spywares? if so how do i get rid of them?
thanks

Most likely you installed a app that has advertisements some have google apps and some have ones that pop up in your notification area other then it being annoying its not necessarily spyware, find the app and uninstall it and your problem will be solved
Our you can install Rom toolbox pro from the market and block every type of ad everywhere

Get airpush detector like the other post said. Thing about these apps that use those kinds of ads also like to thro shortcuts on your homescreen and browser. Everyone hates these apps so rather than block em, i prefer to uninstall them and not use that devs stuff again till they get the point!

Quick question relating to ads... Some come as txt. Rarely do but I get some. Any advice with those?
Sent from my SGH-T999
I think theres an sms blocker app thats supposed to be good at stopping those. Never had a need for it but have seen it mentioned a few times.
In the upcoming jb, this feature is built in.

Adfree not working

I'm hoping someone can tell me how to get adfree to work. When I open adfree it says I'm up to date but I still get ads in a lot of apps (words with friends, bacon reader). I'm running viperINC 1.0.1. I feel like it used to block ads but has stopped working lately. Any ideas?
Thanks!

I don't think it will block all ads. Try another ad Blocker and see if you get different results.

It seems that I get less ads but for full screen ads I get a blank white screen. What's the advantage of that vs an ad? Still pretty annoying.

Just how it works. The ad blockers modify your hosts file to change the address of ad sites to be unavailable. The place where the ads are will still show depending on how they're coded into the app.

Browsers not displaying content.

I Ann running AOKP but this has always been an issue. What setting do I have to change to get content to display on my browsers? So the screen shots site what a lot of sites look like. It's not all sites but it's some. This one is joann . com / coupon. I was in this site with my wife today and tried to use a coupon. Her stock nexus 4 running 4.3 displays everything just fine. I tried dolphin, which is my default, stock browser, and chrome. They ask display like this. I know it must be a setting but I don't know which one.
My wife is now giving my crap because my "fancy phone that I just can't leave alone isn't working right" and she "just knew I would break something“.
