Why Do People Use ROM Manager? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I lost count on how many problems I see people have on here and in the description of what happened, they were using ROM Manager....
Seriously, stop using it. Flash everything in Recovery and Hboot.
To me, using ROM Manager is like updating windows, instead of doing a fresh install whenever a new version comes out. It just causes problems...
OK, ready for all the "I use it with no problems" posts.....

Not here, my friend. I'm in total agreement with you.... Yet, when you're new to rooting, it is only logical that you take the easiest route or what is perceived to be the easiest route because you're scared to death that you're going to muck up your expensive device. Yet, as your experience level increases, you learn what we have learned. It is far too easy to flash from within recovery or the boitloader.

I just realized that you have links to all the files for your setup in your signature! Brilliant idea!
I might have to do that!

Yea, he's had that for a while, and it is a good idea.
And when I used rom manager, I had no problems. Though for first time rooters / new to android, I'd recommend it as it can make the flashing process a little less intimidating. It's a like a bottle...you start with it, then get weened off it.

I use it to download the ROM and add ons but use recovery to flash because it goes much smoother.

ive never had one problem with CM,or RM. If you have a rom that doesnt have an ext boot menu,it simplifies rebooting in to recovery, makes it easy to keep up with your back-ups,fix permissions, and gives you access to various ROMs,all in one really clean UI.

The only reason I keep it is to fix permissions after I flash a new ROM. For that, it's great.

ROM Manager won't flash my recovery image, and almost bricked my device... so yeah I don't like it.

edit:meant to quote hipcat
try typing fix_permissions in terminal emulator.
i think people use it because koush made it seem like you need it. peopl ehear about roms, but don't know what they are. searching root in the market, it's one of the first links. downloading, it makes everything seem so easy. all these roms, just sditting there, all with little one line descriptions, just a 2.99 donate and a click away. that's what people who have just rooted want to see. but i agree, it causes more problems then it solves sometimes. still a great tool.

While it is great, you also have to think of the times. I'm recently 21, engineering major, and I'm fairly tech savvy, but you also have to consider the times.

lol, when I was in 8th grade, Atari was probably something some guy was just dreaming up.
This young generation, that's just hitting their 20's, frankly, scares me. Mass stupidity and too much of the thug influence, but looking at the generation coming up behind them, there may be hope... lol

Wow I feel old. Good to see the younger generation getting into it tho!!
And to stay on topic, I agree op. I don't really believe its needed at all. Seems like it causes more trouble then helps.

Updated Froyo 2.2

Wait, what is this exactly?
Dude, where the hell have you been? There has always been a working froyo since day one. You are totally ignorant to figure that out just now..
Thanks for the kind words. I Know 2.2 has been here for awhile, but I have never been able to get it running properly till now.

Your comment doesn't even fit in the context of the first post, so what's your point? Your lack of caring in no way outweighs our lack of caring, so I guess we are at an impasse. Conclusion, these are the very same files you will find on the latest linux kernel zImages and modules website

Good. We are all disgusted when people steal things and try to claim them as their own.
Maybe if you said where it came from, how you put it together, or highlighted HOW it's different from other builds that are already posted, we would be MUCH more receptive... But from your first post, it just looks like you stole it and tried to pass it off as something you built. That is just shameful, and will NOT be tolerated on this forum.
I didnt see any claim of ownership, unless the post was edited.
A history of the files and such of course would be helpful. And credit given to those who actually created the files is a no-brainer.
But still, I know XDA is the "big leagues", but cant we be a bit nicer? For all we know, this guy could be the next big thing. Just saying...
he edited his first post saying that he has a working froyo he never said it was his but it looked like it since he hasn't given any credit to whomever that build belongs to
in the OP he said it was not reef's build. He's not taking credit, but he's not giving it either, which is probably what bothered most of the people in this thread.
Only the guilty run like cowards IMO.

WTF EC05 in the developer section

So let me get this straight, there is now a developer that has EC05, but you have to register to get it. I tried and get Access denied when trying to download. On a side note EC05 has been released and there aren't 10 mirrors up of it yet? I don't know what is going on with the politics over there, I don't really care or follow it that closely. But what I do know is when I hear that an operating system is leaked I come here to get it. All of a sudden that's not going to happen any more without hoops to jump through, registration and a nag screen for a donation? I wonder if the guys in the Evo forums put up with this am-mature hour BS?

Unfortunately, I've seen this happen everywhere. It is not a Samsung and/or Epic specific issue... Find it hard to believe that with all the different ROM.s for Evo that there isn't the occasional crap about who took what from whom without credit (not that this is this problem). Here, we have someone who got a leak from an inside source and to protect the source, he's done things somewhat differently. Do I agree, well not really sure...I don't want to register to get something (and he is NOT charging) but then again, I had to register to post and get stuff here... So, not that big of a deal. I'm totally happy with ViperRoms BUT I understand what Mammon88 has done and why...but I can see XDA's point too. Just the latest round of politics! If not this, then it would be something else.
Either the stock or bonsai needed off it will work at this point. I'm just shocked that politics are causing a delay in EC05 stock to be put up on these forums. After all it's already OTA at this point. At this point I'll probably wait until tomorrow for an update.zip. I just figured by history it would have already been made available.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Mammon88 can't release the EC05 he has because the digital fingerprints are on the file which would lead back to the person who leaked it in the first place. So the only way to get stock EC05 is to wait for Sprint's release. Glad I'm running Bonsai 4.0.0 right now as I don't want to wait.
just to be honest here, if Mammon can remove the 'fingerprint' from the leaked copy, and put it on Bonsai 4.0, then why can't he release the stock version, fingerprint removed? Didn't he already attempt to do this, but the thread was shut down due to linking to the Bonsai site, which requires registration (not that a mirror is still in the locked thread anyways)? Im pretty sure the registration process does not remove said fingerprint itself.
I have to point out that I think he/they have the right to do WHATEVER they want with the leaked version, as it's not open source, it's a leak... BUT, the whole website membership business is disappointing, yes, it seems just an inconvenience, but if there is/will be paid premium support... it really doesn't belong on here, then does it? Honestly I am just sick of the drama, and apologetics for this whole thing, and I cant imagine what would have happened had it been Noobnl who had the leak, and then proceeded to make such a process... half the members would be asking for his head, no? I don't feel entitled to a thing, but pressure for donations, not to mention having to register for yet another website is not in the spirit of this site.
Why not just post a no-strings attached link here, or even on the Bonsai site...?
I guess demand drives things, as the wait for EB13 prompted half the site to revert to DI18 just to get the OTA and get the update.zip... now it would seem there are far fewer people doing this. /rant

Politics aren't causing anything. Maybe you didn't mean to come across the way you did but it comes across as "entitled". Bonsai is NOT based on the OTA. They don't have it. There is NOTHING to leak as you put it. If it was then we could flash the modem and not be required to odin. To the best of my knowledge the OTA hasn't hit yet. When it does you will see the posts start popping up. Until either be patient or use one of the EC05 ROMs already available.

Absolutley ridicilous. You all need to chill out relax. And respect the devs who bring you these roms for free. You act like its owed to you or something. Anyone else bored with their evo now?

I used to be a flashoholic trying at least 1 new rom daily. After I was done having my fun I'd go back to cm6, then it was back to the cm6 4g rom. Now that I'm on cm7 rc2 I honestly have no need to flash new roms anymore. I love cm7 but it kinda killed my flashing because I have yet to run into anything that I like better. I've tried miui and like it but the new gingerbread rom says it's got a few bugs in it, plus no 4g. Don't know why the 4g thing kills it for me because I went without it while using cyanogenmod releases but now for some reason i feel the need for it. I'm not opposed to sense roms, in fact became really fond of the frost rom but still kept going back to cm. So I'm conclusion thank you to the cm team for making my phone simply amazing but damn you for being so good that I don't want to try anything else.

Your thread title indicates that you are bored with your EVO but your post sounds as if you are just simply happy with your EVO running the CM7 ROM. The title is a bit misleading but I understand how you feel. Your phone is great and you are happy with it and not flashing roms on a daily basis... which is a good thing.
Mabe the title should say you are not bored with your phone but quite happy with it and no longer feel the need to try diferent roms?
I'm bored with Android, not my Evo. I found webOS to be a more exciting OS to use on a phone than Android and iOS.
I just got my flashing days started! It seems I do the same thing you do: keep going back to a particular ROM, mine being Warm Z.
I've just started looking into threads about people posting their home screen and I'm trying to really figure out what I wanna do with that! Really, so many possibilities to do with home screens, it'll definitely keep me entertained for a while.
I just wish the Evo was better at gaming. Overall it's a fantastic phone, but i do like gaming, and with all the hd games and cool emulators coming out, the evo seems to be showing its limits i think. Just holding out for the 3d.
The evo had an outdated gpu before it was even released.

I'm extremely happy with my phone it's just that i would be on it all day looking for new roms to try, waiting for them to download at work, possibly flashing them at work or on the way home, playing around with the new rom when I got home for hours. I love cm7 and my phone but now I have nothing to do.
For months my routine involved wasting hours flashing roms and kernels now all I do is get my ass kicked at Droid words by my girlfriend, I guess that's payback for all the hours I ignored her because I was playing with my phone

Thank you for correcting me. I'm sure you did it to help another person out. My mistake was probably nothing more than an auto correct as I typed this out on my phone. You're so kind with the sharing of your infinite wisdom of the English language. Thank you very much. To help you out you didn't put a period after your 2nd rule, and I believe you only spaced once when you should space twice after the first sentence in your first rule. Next time when you criticize someone on their grammar maybe you can use correct sentence structure.
Thanks once again.

I cant stand morons that troll peoples hard work. as long as people get information, it doesnt matter. A second opinion is always nice.

You accidentally got a thanks, enjoy it. Watch who the F%^ you are calling a troll! Why is someone writing the same thing over and over considered hard work? I can see why a troll like you has only 9 thanks...nothing to offer the community.

Haha We don't need a nerd war occurring. Had to many of those lately lol.
To the OP, your website does look nice. It is well done. I was just pointing out we had a few guides already right here on XDA. Didn't mean to incite a troll riot. Also this might have been better put in General as it is not a question. Your hard work making your website will be appreciated. When you get your 10 posts edit the OP with a full link.

Ok bro, you have taken this to a level it DIDNT need to go. All I was doing is standing up for this dudes work. He is NEW, trying to HELP the XDA COMMUNITY. If thats something thats frowned upon here... people need a "lighten" up a little bit, or consider stepping away from the computer for a few hours.
You could have easily said... "Wow man, nice tutorial. By the way, I just wanted to let know you, A couple people have already done this"
Not be a sarcastic child... two times in a row....
Oh yeah, by the way, I DO contribute to the community, I dont however jack off to my thank you meter. I have a real life, outside of XDA. Do you?
I am done with this now.

And you could have left it alone after the nice props I gave the OP instead of a self-righteous &(*.
I don't think I am an XDA god but I try to help everyone I can, the 993 thanks kind of says that. If everyone just popped on to XDA and their first post was to have a guide to something that was already there, there would be no room for new information here. I read as many threads here as I can so sometimes get a little annoyed at people who post without searching. I am sorry if to YOU it came off rude but if you spent 5 minutes looking around I am FAR from rude nor act like a god.
I was just hoping to help a couple people out. I am sorry if I did something wrong, I probably should have looked around a bit more. Sorry everyone.

No, it is my fault for coming off the way I did. I should have been my usual polite self and added some please and thank you's to appease some people. But I hadn't eaten dinner yet and my neighbors are annoying me. I apologize. When your website is finished maybe qbking77 will let you post his videos there as well and you can get this stickied.

You've no reason to apologize, it's not on you man, just slowly build up your post count by helping and you'll be able to share your guide so that people are able to see it, can never have too many.
The whole arguing thing was bound to happen, not your fault.
@alextjen Just calm it down a few hundred levels, you're taking it too personally, it is just a forum and not real life, no reason to let it ruin your day.
Perhaps you can add how to get to a custom ROM on your site which is quicker than the whole rooting thing. Odin in CWM 5.0.2.7 with reboot unchecked. After completion boot into CWM immediately and flash a previously downloaded prerooted custom GB ROM.

lol, I didnt even know that was possible. I always thought gingerbread had something in it that automatically flashed stock recovery everytime the phone is started. Thats why i always odin back to stock froyo, update to ei22, root, then flash.
So as long as a custom ROM is rooted, for instance..... ACS, Marcusant, or Sleeper, I can just ODIN ClockworkMOD, not reboot, boot up recovery, install the rom, and im good to go?

Yup. Saves a few steps since the prerooted kernel is in the ROM. And you are right if you reboot before going to CWM and flashing the ROM, you end up back at stock recovery.
Kennyglass, how do I get out of download mode after I install CWM? I unchecked auto-reboot, and it just sits in download mode. Do I remove the battery? I did anyways... lol. Im installing starskyrom now to see if im rooted.

Anyone want to test my rom?

hey guys, i just modified the liquid smooth rom cause i was bored.
all credits go to the liquid team...i really didnt do anything hard, and i dont consider myself to be a real developer now.
just wondering if anyone wants to test it out to see if it works, and give some feedback.
http://www.mediafire.com/?zj1dfa69nmyewzn
Changes made:
-removal/replacement of a few apps
-build.prop changes
-changes to updater-script
-changed boot animation
Like I said, I didn't make this to make a more optimized version of liquid smooth. It's more of an experiment/attempt to learn a bit.
Thanks.
btw gapps arent included.
What changes did you make to the rom?

a few build.prop tweaks, some modification of systemui, deleted some apps and added others, changed bootanimation, and i think some other stuff that i cant remember anymore.
Not really a good way to inspire confidence in a ROM that you don't even know what you did to it...

im not really trying to promote it to everyone. i just did this as an experiment, and i just want to know if its booting ok, not force closing apps, etc. so that i know whether or not to change something.
How about you test it out yourself before asking others to risk trying it. Just a simple piece of advice.

According to his sig, he doesn't seem to have a GS3. Probably why he is asking for people to test it for him.
and i dont consider myself to be a real developer now.

Feedback:
Who'd want to "Test" a rom from a non-developer, when there are many that are from DEVELOPERS, not to mention the Liquid Smooth was developed by a full team. This to me infers that you are better than a team? Oh well, if you want to try peeps, go for it, but remember, it was done by someone who says he was not a developer.
like getting on a bus with a legally blind driver!
I have no understanding why anyone would!....... and "TEST"? OMG

i clearly said in my original post, that i take no credit for this, and that all credit goes to the liquid smooth team.
By test i didnt mean to go through the whole rom and check if every single thing works. Im just asking that you flash it
and let me know if it boots fine and doenst have any major issues.
like i said, im not trying to promote this as the best rom for the s3 that everyone should start using.
no need to get all pissed...it was just a simple question. If you dont want to try it, why even post?
i understand your concern guys, but blind development happens all around XDA. if this guy today had a "Recognized Developer" tag, i bet many of you would try it out. don't underestimate the OP.
that said, make sure you do understand that there is a risk since this is a blind development, although i doubt anything would go wrong since this is just something the OP took from an already working ROM for the TMO Galaxy S III and tweaked it a bit...

+1. We can do without the drama guys. The OP is doing absolutely nothing out of the ordinary by developing blind. Yes, it is always a risk for testers, which is why he posted this here looking for the willing. If you don't want to try it, please move along and stop flaming each other. :good:

Thanks. Like you said I doubt flashing this would cause any harm. All I really did was change a couple apps and replace some pics in systemui and frameworkres.
Just make a nandroid, flash the rom, let me know if it installs/boots properly, and then just restore your nandroid.
My apologies go out to the op. He did make an effort to further improve an already outstanding rom and asking for testers is KEY. It's a great start for experimenting while increasing your knowledge on the more advanced aspects of android. Will give this a try once my S3 is fully charged!

Considering that its possible to modify firmware images and inject custom malicious code, I don't see anything wrong with questioning someone's motives for putting up a ROM that they admit they don't even remember what changes were done to it. I can understand if you think you've improved upon something but without a change log or anything there isn't really any reason to test it. Being cautious is not the same as being an ass.

I agree, there is absolutely nothing wrong with questioning something suspicious. But there are ways to do it without coming off like a jerk.
@OP I do advise adding more to the OP about the changes made if you want testers.

One thing that I hate about the internet - you can't really control how your message is taken by others. I wasn't trying to be a jerk at all.

Oh no, I wasn't aiming that towards you at all. It was just a general statement. Now let's stop spamming this thread with off topic posts
Everybody has a point to start. May be this is his point.
I swear if I was fan of 4.2 roms I would do it for you. But I already had too much headache with 4.2 roms.
Dont forget to ask original dev before you modify his work like this.
Gud luck ahead.
the rom has 6 downloads, however no one has given any feedback?
if anyone flashed it could you let me know if it works ok.
