[Q] icons of apps moved to sd card in disorder after reboot/usb-deconnect from PC - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I really like the "custom sort" option of the SE launcher, but it doesn't seem remember the sorting if the SD card disconnects (e.g. when rebooting, I also had it once when I finished the connection to PC). Instead, it just adds alls SD card apps to the end of the list.
Has anyone found a solution for this, apart from leaving all apps on the internal memory?
Kind regards,
jelly
P.S.: I searched the forum, but only found someone referencing this topic but not having the same problem...

It looks like a bug in the launcher and most of us also facing it. Hopefully they will fix it with the forthcoming update.
I switched back to LauncherPro and not affected at the moment, but would try the stock launcher after this bug has gone as this bug is really annoying.
Hope this helps.

its happening on my play too.....

Help Please, same problem here :S

SD Card seems to be unmounting automatically...

Well, basically as the title says. This's happened several times to me already. Say I'll turn my phone on (from standby) I'll get a popup error saying that the backup was unable to complete because no SD card was found. Next, the music application won't load the songs because those're all stored on the card. Same for Photos/Gallery. When I go to ES File Explorer, the 'sdcard' folder reports that it is empty.
There hasn't been a pattern that I discovered. This just happened now when I woke up (phone left charging overnight; Wi-Fi & Sync enabled) and I decided to come post here. Happened again yesterday afternoon when I got my phone out to play some music on the way home.
Every once in a while, I'd get lucky and the files would show up by themselves, but the only fool-proof way I've found to get the phone working properly again is a restart, which takes several minutes to do.
I am NOT running any task manager (well, I was but when this problem started up I checked another thread which recommended to remove the task manager, so I did).
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Do you know of a fix, or is it just me?
Mine's done this a couple of times, but I've put it down to the SD card not being quite pushed home properly. Worth taking it out and cleaning the contacts.
Nope, that doesn't work. I re-inserted it yesterday (contacts were clean) and this morning woke up with the same problem.
Please tell me this isn't just happening to me, cause it'll be a right pain in the ass to have this repaired (sending abroad/etc).
Is the SD Card the one you got with the phone (4Gb) or another make/model size? Please include details so others can help more.
I have left the given Samsung Class 2 4Gb SD card in mine and I have never had any issues with the SD Card unmounting. This is not saying it won't happen, but for me it has been fine. I was going to upgrade to my other Sandisk 16Gb Class 2 that used to be in my Touch Pro, but will do that hopefully this evening.
So all I can guess is either a faulty card or some issue with Class/Size/Manufacturer of Card (if you changed from the Samsung one) ?
It's the stock 4GB card that came pre-installed in the phone. Phone's unlocked too, bought from Clove. If it helps/is relevant: when I loaded up the camera it gave an error saying something like 'no sufficient read permissions for SD card'*, maybe that'd be a clue to the problem.
*I can't quote exactly cause I've since restarted the phone and can't remember it word for word. If/when this happens again I'll post the exact error.
EDIT: There, it just happened again. Restarted the phone not even an hour ago, it's getting ridiculous. Anyway, the error from the camera reads "Unable to save file to SD card due to insufficient file permissions".
FWIW, when I go to SD & Phone Storage settings i CAN see the total and available space on the card. It's just completely inaccessible by the programs. Have also tried the 'SDMount' widget, did absolutely nothing.
Happens to me too but only when I've been letting go of my phone to put it down rather than placing it down, or if I have to drop it on my bed or chair quick.
Happened to me a lot too when I was using one of the lock screen info apps, to get my calendar info on the lock screen. Uninstalled and the SD card problem went away.

Never used that :/
I've uninstalled all apps that seemingly access the SD card and will start reinstalling one by one to see if the problem does come back. Only way I could think of.
It is happening to me also. The last 3 days is doing it at least twice a day , i have the desire almost one month and neved had this problem earlier.
And i though it was something i did.
i had the same camera permissions problem. restarted and havnt seen it again since. 4gb card that came with the unbranded device. no idea what caused it, could be any number off new apps etc :S
I've got the same problem.
I've already tried to reformat my SDcard, but the problem still exists. Another problem when the SD card unmounts, is the CPU usage. This rises to ~10% constantly. Probably cause of this are apps which are trying to write to my SDcard.
Still no solution found, maybe I'll try another SD card in a couple of days.
FWIW, I gave up on the stock card and copied all my stuff over to another 4GB card I had running around (straight copy) and it seems to be working fine now. Haven't had a problem yet, although it hasn't even been 24 hours.
Will report back if/when something comes up, and when I start re-installing the apps that I previously removed.
I wrote to HTC earlier yesterday describing the same problem, and I just received this reply:
Dear Mr.Matthew Thank you for contacting HTC. Maybe you mount it on the pc to copy nd paste something and you forgot to unmount it from the pc.. Are you using the inbox SD card? Did you install any third party applications to the phone? Please use the phone in Safe Mode. Safe mode terminates all installed running applications, in case if they caused this issue. Please backup what you have on the SD Card and Format it. If you have any other inquiries, don’t hesitate to contact us again. Please note that you can contact us via support line. For further details, please go to http://www.htc.com/europe/CA_Hotline.aspx , Thank you so much for using HTC products. Respect & Regards, HTC Team http://www.htc.com

Only thing I have not yet tried is the Safe Mode. Will see if it needs to get to that.
i had this issue when I installed 'ebuddy'... uninstalled it and the problem is no more
It's started to occur on mine at least twice daily now, it wasn't so before about 4 days back. I've just actually restarted the device on getting such an error and apps complaining that they can't read/write to the SD card. Really after some sort of fix here.

You're right it seems that was my problem too.
I got rid off ebuddy and all is fine now
I've had this problem once so far, and reading the reply from HTC reminds me that I have unplugged my phone from my mac without unmounting it a few times...
I am also having this issue and have ebuddy installed! I shall uninstall it and see if it fixes it! I really hope it does because its starting to get annoying
I too have ebuddy installed and shall also try removing it and see if that fixes it!
I don't have ebuddy installed but just experienced the SD card error with the camera today.

Market doesn't display all downloaded items

Hi!
I'm referring to the "Downloads" tab in the Market app.
I've been noticing of late that it isn't listing the apps that I have been downloaded thus far. It displays one/two/three items that 've been downloaded (no specific time line, either). Furthermore, sometimes, it also tends to display an app which has already been removed.
It this normal? Has anyone observed something similar?
Would like to hear your opinions...
Can't say I've had it happen on my Desire. Off the top of my head, some questions that pop up:
- Are you running a custom ROM of any sort?
- Have you enabled any forced "install to SD Card" option (2.2 only)?
- Is it always the same apps that have this disappearing act, or different ones each time?
You could also try clearing the data of the Market app, see if that helps.
Thank you for your response, @Dragoon Knight.
- Nope. Running an unrooted FroYo (WWE ROM)
- Hmmm, well, I did perform a tweak using SDK: to install apps straight to SD card.
- It's different each time. I have a total of 9 apps - and all are installed on the SD unit.
Noticing this was purely by chance. I guess this was not the case - say a week ago?
Been two weeks since I purchased my device, btw. It is my first Android handset. Dunno if it helps, but it came with an Arab-region specific ROM. I "flashed" and installed a WWE ROM while performing a manual upgrade to FroYo.
As I said, I have been noticing this 'issue' (if it can be called so) over the past three-four days. Weird, nain?
It's connected to the app direct to sd fix I think!
Did It to mine earlier this week and now it keeps happening.
I did notice if I reboot the phone and not open the market for around 30 mins they seem to appear!
Hope that helps a bit!

try clearing the market data in manage applications
@The_real_dj
"It's connected to the app direct to sd fix I think!" - can you please elaborate?
@AndroHero
Didn't work.
EDIT:
Guess what? I have this habit of charging the mobile after turning it off. I turn it on, voila! All apps are listed.
But after a few hrs... Again - back to randomly listed apps.
Not that it bothers me all that much (but yes, it does keep poking me now and then)... Just that I am hoping all this is NOT a sign of things to come. :/ :?
I've had this issue for a couple of months now. The apps in the Market's "Downloaded" section come and go. Sometimes they're all there, sometimes just a few of them. Clearing the Market's cache and/or data don't seem to help much. A bit annoying, but I can live with it
Ah, so I'm not alone.
Of course, am sure we can live with it. But it is a pesky annoyance. :/
Glad that someone else has noticed this. 'Cos, serious or not, I haven't seen this "issue" addressed.
Thank you for adding to the conversation, @MapleDouglas.
Got the same problem too. Just randomly comes and goes. At least I haven't noticed a pattern yet.
At one point it was getting annoying as it lasted a couple of days.
The Market issue addressed here applies frequently to apps that have been shifted to the SD card. Is this the case with your phones as well?
You can try the AppBrain app - this app can cope with apps on the SD card as well.
I had mine do this too yesterday and I have the setInstallLocation2 mod..

- Ah! I never quite observed that. Well, for now, only one app is missing from the list and it has been moved to the SD card. In fact, the other apps that are being displayed were either moved or force-installed to the SD card.
What's the App you're talking about? How will it help?

Lets hope there is a work around. Feel free to add to this discussion.
Tried resetting the "force-install-to-SD" tweak: pm setInstallLocation 0
No use.
Just to letcha know...

[Q] Run from SD / Non Rooted Desire

I have followed the steps found elsewhere on this site to allow almost any app to run from SD. I have seen cautionary notes about unmounting the SD card and the potential nasty effects it can have. (Including how touchdown even cautions against moving the DB to the SD card).
Under what conditions could I unmount my SD car. I know that connecting to my PC and choosing to connect as disk drive. What about using HTC sync?
If I do unmount the SD card is there any precautions that I can take to avoid corrupting theses apps or DB (Force close before connecting)
Next in a much more general question. Is it possible that whith a future release of Android OS that all apps, widgets and data can be run from SD card regardless of whether root access is required or not. Or is more of a core functionality that will always prevent some apps from running from the SD.
Appreciate any and all replies.
Come on guys a little help here
Please I have seen that this group is filled with Brainiacs that could answer this question in their sleep.
I know that it is a noob question but I did research it first before posting it.
Anything from anyone would be helpful
I use Froyo A2SD, and have never had a problem. I certainly don't do anything special.
On your second question, it won't be a problem in the future because the hardware is better specified. If you look at the Desire Z and HD they have way more app space in the first place, rendering any form of A2SD obsolete.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave!
Dave,
First off thanks for the reply.
1. Do you ever use HTC sync yourself? Also it should be noted that I ran the modification to force apps to run from the SD not just the ones that are market approved ones. Again the worrying note from Touchdown about corrupting the DB
2. Actually want I meant was will the phone we have (Desire) manage run from SD better with any future software updates. It is disappointing to have an 8Gb card and not be able to load up with tons of apps.
As much as I would like to update my phone that is not an option for me as I have had the phone less than 2 months.

[Q] Media files randomly disappear when connected as usb disk mode.

I havent yet found any solutions to this problem and decided to ask here.
This happens at only Sense based roms!
When I connect my phone as usb disk drive to pc and than back %90 of the time my media files randomly disappear. Many of my music files gone missing and my selected rimgtone / alarm etc mp3 also returns to defaults. Videos photos randonly hidden from system as well.
The files are there but android os cant access them. Only way is using an app like SDRescan this solves the problem until I connect the phone again to transfer files...
Please I have tried everything from formatting the sdcard with fat32 again to searching for .nomedia hidden files etc etc. No solution worked yet.
Again only Sense roms do this. I used MIUI and CM7 too they didnt have this behaviour I never loose any files like this.
Extra info: My phone went to service and mainboard changed and the same thing is happeneing so I have no reason to belive it is about the phone.
Only Suspect: SDCard. (The default one that comes with the phone) But it is not really a strong suspect. Cause it works in other roms.
Anyone has any solution? This is driving me crazy and I want to use my phone with Andoroid revolution HD rom.
Any help is appreciated.
123 hits and noone has any idea?
Could be something related to mediaserver...Nothing comes in mind as I'm playing paintball right now. Does this happen on all sense ROM's, (2.x - 3.x) or ARHD in particular?
Sent from my DZ.
Oh god an answer finally!
Ok this is my history with Desire Z:
bought phone:
Stock Froyo -problem
upgrade:
Stock Gingerbread - problem
rooted:
CM7 : no problem
MIUI (bulletproof) : no problem
lets try sense again after a long time!:
Revolution HD Rom: Problem again!!!
BTW I am not a noob. I have prepared an s-off/root and custom rom guide for the most popular forum in my country and helped a lot of people to root their desire z's.
Running ARevoHD rom with swap and supercharge with out any other problems at the moment.
But this stupid bug is driving me crazy. I gotto run SDrescan app after every time I use my sdcard as a disk.
Eh, sorry for not replying earlier, just came back.
Now, the behaviour you explain is odd. Have you tried logcat and see if there's any relevant output? I'd look for "Mediaserver" first. By the way, have you tried plugging the phone to another computer? I'd try that too.
The behaviour I told you isnt very uncommon. Many people have this problem. HTC answer it by saying "format your sdcard" some people says it fixed theirs. But my problem still goes on. Also I dont know where to and how to look with logcat. This happens when I choose DISK mode when connected with usb. And than when you go back to normal mode mp3's are gone until you rescan.
I cant believe I am the only one having these issues here.
Shameless bump
What brand card do you have? And remember, XDA is not your Tech Support site.
Yeah sometimes I forget this is a developer "only" forum and the residents are usually elite and unforgiving people and not to be disturbed by petty questions of "15 year old boys".
Excuse me for my question and thank you for your help.
I wont be disturbing the forum again.
BTW before the flames:
I respect all the developers here for whom I am very grateful of and I get triple the fun from my Desire Z by the works of them. Thank you.

People come in, they read it, but have no idea how to fix your problem, so they don't reply.
There could be a problem with the rom, where it doesn't mount the card properly. Also what OS are you running, and how do you unplug the phone? Many people ignore the saftey removal warning for flash drives an other devices, but sometimes it could be the culprit. Next time make sure you go through the process to safely remove hardware and xee if it happens again (On Windows, right click the little icon in the bottom right to safely remove, and on mac, drag the 'drive' to the trash bin (which changes to an eject button)
Nothing is changed how I remove my phone from USB. I tried everything and it seems unrelated how I unplug.
Because this happens when I change my phone from disk mode to charge mode even.
ALWAYS the same MP3's are lost I am sure because I change my ringtone to same mp3 everytime and when this happens that ringtone disappears from music player and I cant choose it from ringtone setup screen. So until I rescan my sdcard with an app I cant seem to see those mp3's. There is nothing wrong with MP3's too.
I am not sure if the problem is my SDcard or the general Sense based roms. I am truely lost in this case.
It never happens if I dont connect it to usb and change to disk mode.
My theory :
Somehow the mediaserver who archives the media files forgets half of my files when lost connecttion to sdcard. I dont know why or how.
i used to have the same problem, but it disappeared by it self i don't know how, try formatting it
Oh as I said in my original message I formatted my SD card with fat 32 system and this didnt work at all. I will try again but it is frustrating to backup gigabytes of data froma slow card meh
It is good that I am not the only one I hope to find some reasonable solution to this.

[Q] apps gone after reboot

Im running a stock hox with the latest update. Before the last update I had the problem I was hopeing that after this new update it would change but unfortunate itdoesn't.
I have about 12 pages of apps. I spend at least 3 hours a day avarage on this phone if not more. Love the device best phone I had so far but. When I was on vacation last may. I got the issue where my sdcard was gone. So I called HTC and they told me to reboot using that 3 second hard reboot p whatever its called. It did the trick and thusfar I have used this phone quite a lot. But since about 2 months I had the problem that after installing a minor update I had to reboot. After reboot my apps were gone. I lost 70% of my downloaded apps. After searching in a couple of settings I found that if I openend settings where you can copy apps to you and such to make room. I make this app scan for apps to move or remove. And I close it. After that the apps show. After the last update still nothing changed. Other then that I now get issues with my memory to. I can't even move a app that's 6megs big to my sd card even though the diskusage app shows about 10gigs free. Here comes another weird part in the disk usage part of settings its shows even 14 gigs free but that's not correct either. Since I get these problems to. I'm was hopeing to find a solution.
So my main concern. How come after reboot I lose all my apps.
Hope somebody can make any sense I do had to add I tried finding a solution but i couldn't find anything usefull. or anything about this for that matter thanks in advance for any help.
P.s. I seem to have ended up in general instead of q&a could a mod maybe put this post in the right place. Thanks!
Similar problem is also encountered, in which all applications in sdcard are disappeared after rebooting.
Require 1 or more times of reboot to solve it.
Need a permanent solution to this problem as well.
