Call Forwarding - Unexpected response from network error - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I update my voicemail settings, or call forwarding, I get a "Unexpected response fron network" error message. I called my provider (Rogers) and said it appears to be correct on their system... However, it doesn't seem so because when people call me, they get forwarded to Google Voice... I already uninstalled Google Voice, and it was taken out already, however, it still forwards to there which is a USA number and I'm in Canada, so people who call me get forwarded to a long distance number and it bothers me and them so much...
Rogers told me to contact HTC but I want to hear your solutions first guys... BTW, I'm using the Virtuous ROM (which is almost entirely stock packages)
Help?

did you use the star codes to disable call forwarding?

What are the star code? Already forgot them... heh

I was getting the same error and this worked for my desire on orange:-

Call Forwarding Problem
I have an unlocked AT&T Atrix on Orange UK running Gingerbread. As soon as you go and look at the Call Forwarding options the phone indicates that all calls are Forwarded and the Icon top left turns on, disabling 'Foward All' shows disabled for a few seconds then comes back with the 'Unexpected reponse from network' message, although calls are not actually Forwarded (can still receive calls). Old SIM card, but OK in old V3x phone. I tried with a '3' Network SIM and all works as expected, so definitely an Orange problem with Android/Atrix. I called Orange who sent some SIM updates one of which failed, called them again and they decided to send me a new SIM but this has made no difference at all.
Only way to reset the indicator and message once on, is to enter ##21# which does the job.
Just an annoying Network bug but interested if anyone knows how to get Orange (and I guess T-Mobile) to do anything about this as it seems from other research to affect several different phone makes and models.

Same issue
I'm Having the same issue on Rogers with my Xperia ion....still ahven't sorted it out

Any Resolution to this issue? I have what appears to be an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 Active from ATT and attempting to use my CRICKET SIM and I get this message.

[Q] Voicemail locks phone?

I've received a voicemail (I have the reel-to-reel tape icon). If I do anything in an attempt to listen to the voicemail (including dialling 901 as suggested) then my phone attempts to make a call, which ends about one second later, then the display locks and I have to enter my PIN number again.
I'm happy just to turn Voicemail off, as it has stopped working, but I suspect this will involve dialling 901, and then I'm back to square 1.
Any suggestions, or do I just wait for the voicemail to expire?
I liked this phone for the first three weeks, but now, with the "Low memory" problem and now this, I've passed into the "hopefully someone will steal it" phase...
I suspect it that your wfs can't read the settings from the sim to find out the voicemail/anwser phone. Haven't tested it, will report back if I have a problem.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire S A510e using the air.
That was it. GiffGaff uses 443 (GIF) instead of 901.
Their help said to enter *61*443# but that didn't seem to do anything. Voicemail still said 901.
So I went into the settings and changed the Voicemail number to 443. It still said 901.
So I rebooted the phone. Now it says 443 and Voicemail works.
I'm left wondering which of my two actions fixed the problem, and if it WASN'T *61*443# then I wonder what that did?
voicemail is in your service provider in sim, not included in phone only emails are compatible with wildfire s. just tell them to email you than this voicemail.

[Q] T-Mobile caller id?

Is anyone having issues with their S III not displaying caller id on T-mobile?
After the bloatware subscription T Mobile Caller Id ran out it seems like most calls I receive now show no caller id info. I wonder if this a problem tied to that app, or something different.
Caller ID as in someone that's not on your contacts? Cause, that's a service you have to subscribe to I think. Otherwise...all my Gmail contacts show up when they call.
Called ID should be working fine but I believe you only get 7 days for free, I got rid of it cause I feel the app is just wasting my battery

Even if it is someone in my contacts, it still says unknown.

My caller id worked 2 times tops during my 7 day trial. One came with the name and the other unknown. Do I want to subscribe? That's a no brainer.

I'm running a rooted (mostly stock) rom and the tmobile subscription caller id is not there as an option on my phone. Therefore, I have never set it up. I have, however, noticed half a dozen people or so that are in my contacts that still show up as unknown when they call. If I call them once from my phone, it appears that my phone recognizes them the next time they call. What a pain. I've heard of several people having the same or similar issues. Hope they patch this stupid bug.
NO CID on T-Mobile
Caller ID stopped for me yesterday. I am not talking about the bloatware CID w/subscription. My work cell that is most definitely in my address book, is showing as "Unknown." Strange thing about this is that while on WiFi calling, if I call my work cell 1st, it will show the contact info. Calling 1st on the cellular network does not work. I am on hold with a CSR that is really trying but no success yet. She had me pull the battery and SIM. WTF?!?!?!

[Q] Incoming calls straight to voicemail

On my wife's GSM Galaxy Nexus, running JB 4.1.1, all incoming calls are getting forwarded directly to voicemail. I've tried quite a few things to remedy the issue, but to no avail. Here are some of the relevant details.
Phone worked fine for at least a week after the JB update.
She can place calls without any problem.
She can receive email and browse the web without issue, both on WiFi and on 3G/H.
I can forward her phone to our home number and the forwarding works perfectly.
We use Google Voice for our voicemail service. When I try to reset voicemail settings to our cellular carrier (AT&T), the phone does NOT seem to reset the voicemail numbers (they still appear as her Google Voice number). However, when I do remove Google Voice and then call the phone, I get a message that her voicemail is not set up. Which makes sense: we've never set up AT&T voicemail.
I've done a factory reset: calls still go straight to voicemail. And the voicemail number after a factory reset is STILL her Google Voice number.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Did you port the # to Google voice? I that would explain the settings sticking after reset.. It sounds like a GV issue and not a phone issue

No, we did not. I'd agree with you that it's a Google Voice issue...except everything was working fine up until one or two days ago. Calls both in and out worked without issue, as did voicemail.
Very strange. I'm going to contact AT&T to get their take on things.
AT&T seem to think its a bad SIM card. I'm going to pick up a new one tomorrow.
last time this happened my girlfriend somehow added me to the auto reject list lol

I'm not sure if you said calling to google voice number wouldn't work or calling the mobile number...
If it's the mobile, its not a gvoice issue..
I really would not think that a sim card would cause the problem itselt, but it might reset your forwarding options... I dont know.. you can try this if it doesn't work...
dial #002#
this will reset ALL of your call forwarding options just in case something is wrong / corrupt there... after you verify that calls to the number work, then you can setup the conditional call forwarding..

Great idea. I thought something similar, but when I try to enter any call forwarding codes (like the one above), I get "Call forwarding connection problem or invalid MMI code." Again, this leads me to think that perhaps the sim card really is the problem. If not, it's an AT&T network setup issue.
I'll post again later today with whatever progress I've made. Thanks for trying to help!
Picked up a new sim card, and it completely resolved the problem. Strange, but whatever. As long as the wife's phone is working, all is well!

Google Voice Not Working on AT&T

Hello fellow Nexus 5Xers,
Just got the 5X and have been getting everything up and running these last few days. Previously, I had the old Nexus 5 on AT&T and am getting things set up on the new phone, also with AT&T. My goal is to try to get Google Voice VM set up.
I went through the normal voicemail set up on the Google Voice app, but noticed that I was not getting voicemails when people called. I tried calling my number on another line and got the "This number is out of order error message". I called AT&T and got set up with a carrier VM just to make sure I had something that worked.
I went back to the Google voice settings page on the website and re-registered my phone and tried to run the code that would forward calls to my Google Voice number. When I entered the code, it says "MMI Code started" and then comes back with "Call forwarding Connection problem or invalid MMI code".
I then tried re-doing set up on the Google Voice App on Android and still no luck. Then I tried setting up a conditional forwarding in the settings menu of the Phone under "Calls>Call Forwarding" to my google voice number and I get a "Call settings error, Unexepcted response from network".
Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas on what to do to get Google Voice VM set up?
I'm getting the same exact problem and also on ATT. Can't seem to figure out what the issue is...
Works fine here just check on computer to forward calls use your at&t number
Try putting your SIM in another phone in order to issue the conditional call forwarding command, then put it back in the 5X. This is a network dependent feature which should continue to be in force until you cancel it (regardless of which phone you are using).

Thanks for the reply, TLopez. Are you using AT&T? When I go on my account page for AT&T, it says you have to enter a set of codes on the phone to set it up and can't set it up on-line.

I am in the same boat as you. As far as I can tell the problem is with the way AT&T configured the account when we swapped SIM's. (Since you went from a Nexus 5 to the 5X, I'm assuming that you had AT&T give you a new Nano-SIM to replace the Micro-SIM that was in your 5).
From what I have been able to piece together all Smart Phone Voicemail accounts being provisioned now by AT&T are setup with Visual Voicemail and that setup is not allowing the provisional forwarding that Google Voice requires to become the Voicemail provider for the number.
When I look on my 5X under Dialer App -> Menu -> Settings -> Calls -> Call Forwarding
the Settings for "When busy", "When unanswered ", & "When unavailable" are "Off", "Off", & "Disabled".
When I look at these setting on an AT&T phone that was provisioned a few years ago, those setting show the AT&T voicemail access number.
I've talked to three different CSR's on the business account line and they had no useful information.
Same issue
I am also having the same issue. I switched from Nexus 4 to Nexus 5X and it seems AT&T network is not allowing call forwarding to be enabled.
Here is what I have tried but still now fix:
1.) Uninstall and reinstall Google Voice app.
2.) Uninstall, reboot, and reinstall Goofle Voice app.
3.) Deactivate and reactivate using instructions on voice.google.com
4.) Try programming forwarding number under Call Settings menu.
5.) Talk to AT&T chat support. No luck...insist the phone is unsupported on network data protocols or some other BS.
Any information would be helpful.
I remember from the past that even if att set has errors on the phone, that it worked anyway. I have been using gv since the nexus one and it was sketchy back then. I havent' had any problems for a couple years. The new sim might F it up. But it works for me. I have been involved in many GV threads in the past. It might help to read some of those. The web interface GV is the key. It has mostly to do with the settings on your end, not att. They don't know **** all anyway.
I'm going to search and see what I can find. I have used GV and att exclusively since 2010, and It's never really failed.
To be clear, I'm using a 5x with an Att SIM, I do not have GV installed on the N5X and things work normally, both GV # and SIM associated att # both go to GV VM and Notifications come through hangouts and both numbers ring the handset.
post here for Q's about web interface. I never touched the n5x voicemail settings. on the handset. it just worked from the beginning.

But you didn't change SIMs when you moved to your 5X, correct?
That has been my experience with GV and new phones in the past. As long as the account was configured correctly on the previous phone, there was nothing that needed to be done on the new phone, since all the conditional forwarding was already setup on the network side.
yes, correct. I was just trying to say that it's possible and you don't need to call att to make it happen. Under my forwarding menu
always forward =off
when busy, unanswered, unreachable = my gv #

Yea, if I go into that menu and try to change the values it just returns an error, I am not able to change the values from "off" and "disabled". And even with those showing "off" and "disabled" AT&T's voicemail works correctly.
what about voicemail setting? I have "your carrier" not gv.

I have tried both setting, it makes no difference.
I even have had AT&T turn off VM on the network side, that didn't help at all.
At this point I'm not sure if "Conditional forwarding" is not available on newly provisioned lines or that the Nexus 5X doesn't have the tools to setup conditional forwarding.
I have a SIM adapter on order, when that comes in I will try to do the GV configuration on my old HTC M7 to see if that makes any difference. I don't really think that it will, but it sounds like a less frustrating step than calling into AT&T repeatedly until I happen across a CSR that knows how to setup conditional forwarding on the network side. (Or that knows conclusively that it is not possible on new SIM activations.)
read this page. it's something easy, it has to be. I have set up other people on gv with the same phones. Never had a problem but its in the details.
I do wish you good luck.

So yes, in this case, I can't seem to add my Google Voice number to those fields. When I go in, all fields are "off" and if I try to input my GV number for any of them, I get an error that states "Unexpected response from network"
Even if I try to input another number altogether, i.e. my home or work number, I get the same response.
I was having this same issue with my Nexus 5X using a new At&t nano sim. To resolve it, I had to call and speak with Customer Service. I explained that I wanted to setup Conditional Call Forwarding for all three conditions (busy, unreachable, unanswered) and they were able make the changes. I checked the Call Forwarding Settings screen immediately after hanging up and confirmed the correct Forwarding # was in place.

I have changed phones between iOS and Android several times, never had issues with GV until my first Nexus (which is the 5x). The MMI codes that GV gives would not work, and from the call screen, if i clicked on the (...) in the top right corner i could go to 'settings', but it still wouln't take my GV number.
I spent 2 hours with ATT, she was very very helpful and got "advanced support" to help. Eventually, ATT changed all 3 of my "conditional call forwarding" to my GV number, but it still went to my ATT voicemail. ATT lady started to conference Google in for help. I had to leave the call, but several hours later i started getting VM thru GV. I'm not sure if the conditional call forwarding numbers just needed time to activate across the network (ATT Lady said that it didn't), or if when she spoke to Google they figured something out.
Good luck everyone. The problem is resolvable with ATT help, I wish I had more details to provide.
I just called my 5X and I got my GV message for when a call is missed. I am coming from a Moto X 2014 that had GV setup as the VM and all I did was move my sim from that phone to the 5X. Not that this helps anyone with a problem, but figured I would chime in on my scenario that does work.
I was having same issue... Seems the only way to resolve is to contact Att. The CSR I spoke with on chat was very knowledgeable of this issue and resolved it in less than 5 minutes. Even still... It's an unnecessary inconvenience
I've had this issue in the past, it randomly started happening on my prior M8. Nothing worked...no MMI codes, online meetings, manual call forward numbers, nothing...I ended up getting it resolved by having ATT advanced technical support manually edit the forwarding scenarios and numbers on the back end. Even they were confused as to why it was happening, and I had to get to the second level of advanced support before the technician had the correct access rights to edit the numbers. This was back in July-ish, and they had been apparently going through some significant "non-cystomer-facing" changes to their backbend VM systems.. All GV working fine for me asof now, and I'm still using the same Nano-SIM card on my 5X that cane from that M8.

Call Forward not working (AT&T)

Anyone having an issue with call forwarding not being able to be set up? I use youmail for voicemail and today I went to set it up on my 5X, It couldn't forward the calls. When I went into the call settings to try to manually enter the code I get an error. It will not allow me to forward. Anyone else have this issue?
The exact message I get is:
"Call settings error
Unexpected response from network"
Opps meant to post this in Q&A. I reported to the mods to move
Bump on this.
Using a Nexus 5X trying to setup call forwarding, and I get the same error when configuring it from the phone application, and "Call Forwarding, Connection problem or invalid MMI code" when using the MMI code. Same thing happens when I try to configure it using a Nexus 6 running Marshmallow.
Tested fine on an AT&T branded HTC A9 running marshmallow though, so it seems to only affect the Vanilla flavor of the OS.
I had to call AT&T and have them manually do it but it's still not working correctly. If I dont answer the call it goes to my AT&T voicemail but if I reject the call it goes to youmail even though in call settings it's all set to youmail. I'm going to call AT&T tomorrow and try to figure it out.

So after a call to them and mentioning this and telling them with no answer it was still going to my AT&T VM she checked and sure enough it wasn't provisioned correctly. Now everything works as it should
After reading this I called AT&T and passed on the information. She told me that I was provisioned correctly and entered my IMEI in their system. Still can't get HD Voice or Call Forwarding working. Any other tips that may help??

I had the same issue, even got my nano-sim swapped again. Turned out it was the HD Voice feature. N5X supports HDV, AT&T provisioned it correctly but this feature causes communication failure to AT&T network when try to change/update call forwarding. The ATT tech guy disabled HD Voice on my account, I can now change/update the forwarding numbers again. The fix might be temporary though, ATT regularly does network sweep and it might just automatically turn on HDV feature again when it detects your phone supports it. A permanent solution would be for Google to add an option to manually disable HDV on the phone in the next update.
Sorry for the 2-year old thread bump, but I have a relevant update...
It now appears that the stock dialer can properly provision the call forwarding settings on AT&T. Settings --> calls ---> call forwarding ---> update busy/unanswered/unreachable. I reached out to AT&T support after changing and they confirmed it was properly set on their end. Though, FWIW, I previously had AT&T set the forwarding settings, but had to pull the SIM to test an iPhone. It seems to have reset the forwarding settings, which is why I had to mess with this again in the first place...
