[Q] Development Help?? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Where should one start if they want to begin developing, porting, etc.?? I'm very interested and love the fact that everyone here seems to learn from one another. Any links to recommend?

that is the kitchen you will need. He also recommends using Ubuntu.
Then there is a video at theunlockr.com which is pretty good.
Make us something pretty that can bite the head off of a Liger!!!

LOL I have been following Virus's thread and all the work that Leoisright, TMartin, etc. are doing makes you wanna learn as much as possible to become part of the team. Thanks for the information

Directv QC Software Development
To all developers, I'm looking at creating an app to allow signing into a certain website in order to upload QC photo's and data. More info will be released as I get in contact with someone that is able to help me with this. If this is able to be accomplished, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of service tech's; tech supervisors; & upper management that are willing to pay $10-$15 per app downloaded. This creation will ease the everyday process of QC'ing multiple jobs per day. Please get back to me if you are able to assist me in this project. Thank you in advance for any help provided.

Just a quick "Hello" and "Thanks"

Hi - I've been a frequent visitor to this site for a couple years, and created an account about a year ago, but never posted anything until today.
The first thing I want to say is a big, fat, THANK YOU to the site owners, the developers who provide these incredible apps, and my fellow members, whose knowledge & information has been invaluable.
Thanks to all of you, I learned about SERO, which, of course, makes my phone bill quite manageable at $30/month. You've also shown me how to make my phones work the way I want them to work, and look the way I want them to look; as someone who "needs" to customize everything, I'm eternally grateful for that!
I'm a Technology Specialist by trade, and a part of my job is to help people use the technology available to them (computers, software, peripherals, phones, etc.), and to provide customizations & solutions that help them do their jobs more efficiently, but I'm not a programmer.
Since I'm not a programmer, I really don't have much to offer here on xda-developers (which explains why my first post was 2 years in the making!), but I felt a little guilty about not expressing my gratitude for all I've taken from this site without giving anything back... So I hope my recent small donation is helpful, and I want you all to know I'm very appreciative of your efforts.
Thanks again,
Scott
Thanks. See my sig!
Cool Happy Flashing on XDA

One of the best WM apps, Griff, looking to become open source- will you take over?

So one of the best apps on Windows Mobile, Griff, is about to die. The developer doesn't want to continue with it. I suggested that he make it open source and let the community take over, rather than let it die. He told me to post an inquiry here and see if there was any interest from the community.
Do any of you developers want to take over? Some more info on Griff:
http://www.planetgriff.com/galleria.php
http://www.planetgriff.com/index.php
The thread where the developer asks me to post here to possibly find someone to take over an open source project:
http://www.planetgriff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1528
For those who don't know, this is the best mobile music making/sequencing app on the market. It has won plenty opf awards. It's virtually unchanged since 2000 (except for adding support for additional resolutions) and still today is better than anything on the iPhone.
I'm hoping there is someone out there who will take over this project and make it continue to be the best app out there as we move onto capacitive screen devices and devices that don't have a d-pad.
If you know of a better place to post this, please post it there...
Hmm Im not really into music making on my phone but It looks like a good piece of software
Im not a developer but I CAN do this
~~~~~BUMP~~~~~~
(lol hope it helps)
Hrm... very very interesting indeed! This would blend my personal life (writing music), professional life (development) and my hobbies (big focus on PDA's and WinMo for the last 4+ years) very well.
I'd be interested in joining a group to do this - I couldn't take it over alone (there just isn't enough time).
What language / libraries are used?
I was a C/C++ programmer at one time. Today I'm mainly enterprise Java with a smattering of other stuff. I've also designed quite a bit as well (project plans, UML, ROI, yada yada yada corporate stuff).
I run our corporate builds and manage developer assignments / team coordination - so out of the box I can pledge to help with source code management and developer support / project coordination. These are easy for me as I do 'em all day every day. Besides active development, as well
I'd like to see a few people express interest and I think I'd be willing to jump in with both feet here - especially if it migrated to a freeware kind of system.
~Eric
Oh please someone take this over and make it COOL. It has potential but the UI is so unintuitive. I been doing pro audio for years and years and years and I had to drop the idea of killing time with this app.
B-to-the-IZUMP
Griff is easily one of the best applications for music production on windows mobile and indeed any mobile platform.
Im not a dev but i write music... i would be happy to get involved with this project somehow.
i do have some experience with programming but my code would probably be buggy as hell
I am personally very interested in this. only demoed the thing but found it really, really brilliant.
I can't promise I will have much free time for it, but I will be more than happy to give all the support I can.
I can do sourceforge, github, C/C++ also for Windows Mobile, C# for what matters. I can also do a lot of other things that probably don't apply in this context
cheers,
Aldo
bloody hell.. I didnt even know such an app existed.. thanks for sharing.. now who is going to take it over.
fixed now, sry.
*bow* thank you, I'm still optomistic that a project like this can come together and resurrect a great piece of paid software into a community-driven piece of open source and freeware.
~Eric
And I didnt heard of this software before now?
Greetings and what a piece of software.
I'm a producer myself and have been looking for a software as this, looks awsome.
I'm not a developer but hoping that someone here will take over this fantastic project.
Haven't used Griff in a few years, but I'd would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see this project brought current.
Wow
This looks like something that could blend so well into an HD2.....and give Intua Beat Maker (iPhone), a very good run for the money.
I looks like it just needs a home start and a drum pad section, and it matches the best iPhone has to offer.
I hope someone takes this and runs with it.
please make it happend!
So here's what I know so far - Griff is primarily a single developer project with ~ 300 cpp/.h files based on the MFC framework. There's a couple of people who write plugins for it.
So, I'm in if Daniel (the developer / code owner) decides to go open-source with the project. Looks like we have several SMEs and testers ready to go - anyone interested in contributing with the coding? I can go it alone, but life has its time constraints
I don't now much about coding, but I do own Visual Studio 2008 (was planning on getting into it) and I would be happy to try. I do make a lot of music on the PC though (using Cubase) so I could definitely contribute some ideas at least.
I would definitely be willing to help with the coding too provided someone can help me out when I get stuck.
awesome SD!
~Eric
Neither I was aware about this application. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
I play the guitar and the piano myself and occasionally I do some home-recording with Cubase although it is just a hobby. But still, I have a few ideas and knowledge about the music-tools available out there.
Playing around with Cubase is not my only hobby - I am also fond of programming. Unfortunately I hardly know any C++ at all since I am old "Basic"-user and now I am programming (both for desktop and Windows Mobile) in the .Net enviroment with C# and VB.Net.
So I doubt I could help with programming but I could indeed help with beta-testing (since I know the "logic" and way of thinking normally used by a programmer).
Just to summarize, I am ready to give a helping hand.
Help starting development..
Hello, I was wondering if someone can steer me the right direction in terms of starting development.
I have no previous programming/development experience whatsoever. I am a somewhat computer nerd but never found the time to get into the developing arena.
Now that I am out of college and have A LOT of time on my hands I want to focus on this because I would absolutely love developing.
I need to know EVERYTHING there is to know about developing for android; for apps and creating roms. What books I need to buy to get everything down? What programs or tutorials? I am very serious about this, someone please help me and tell me all there is to know about accomplishing this goal and where to begin.
Thanks, much appreciated!
Since you mentioned you have no programming experience.. There's three important coding styles you need to master for android.. XML, Java and C/C++. The best way is to write some beginner programs available on the Internet.
In addition to coding, you need to become comfortable with the linux tool set. If you don't already, running a linux distribution will help you learn the environment. I suggest Ubuntu, debian, or gentoo.
I don't mean to make this sound intimidating.. but developing isn't an overnight thing.. a lot of people on these forums learn as they go but have a decent amount of experience with one of these aspects. Many of us are CS or EE/ECE students or grads..
Sam's Teach Yourself Android Development in 24 hours is the book i've been messing with for a couple weeks, very helpful. I got it as a pdf
In the Chef Central -> Android forum of this site, cyanogen has a stickied thread that you need to read.
WP7 Gamers
Hi all, with the current lack of global leaderboards, or any specific WP7 Gaming community (that I've found) I've set up WP7 Gamers.
At present, we're on Facebook and twitter (search out WP7 Gamers). A fully fledged website may follow later should interest deem it worthwhile. Also as this is done in my spare time (which I lack enough of!) - if anyone is interested in becoming an admin/mod/poster - please feel free to drop me a message!
Not wanting to upset the mod's on here, this is not run for profit! Just couldn't find what I was looking for! so set out to make it myself. Also for the dev's out there wanting to promote their titles, please feel free to send any information/screenshots/video's and I'll make sure they are shared
Hope this is ok?
gr8 idea dude
Hey sHAYM4N I'm trying to message you but it's not letting me, can you send me one that I can reply to? Thx man.
If you want, I could lend you my website.
It was supposed to be a site dedicated to game news/reviews for WP7 that I started as a school project, but I couldn't find the time to continue it. If you and a small group wanted to take charge more or less, I would give you guys all the info needed to moderate the forums, and if you wanted to, you could even post news and get the front end going again - assuming people posting news were literate.
Let me know.
Cheers for that, but I may have to look at designing from scratch for what I have in mind.
I don't really want this to be another new/reviews website if it goes that way. I want to try and create something that I see as an extension to XBox Live. Something different...
Having a quick search around it appears Microsoft don't have an open API for XBox which is a real shame tbh, because there are a lot of things that could be done further which I don't think are yet being taken advantage of.
In a perfect scenario I would like to see members register for the website using their gamertag, from there they could access leaderboards, compare gamerscores, compete in challenges, whilst also being an active social forum for indie developers.
I'd also be looking for the site to be run by 5-10 people - preferably from different timezones!
If the idea took off and interest grew, challenges could turn into competitions, advertising into supporting the site etc...
When I get chance I'll mock up some designs. I'm more of a designer than a developer - so if anyone has got any advice, or want's to get on board so to speak - feel free to let me know!
For the time being there will be weekly challenges on the Facebook Page. Get the highest score by the closing time, and your gamertag/pic will be crowned on the Profile Pic.
I'll also be posting information about Indie Games, so if you want your game featured please let me know! They won't be reviewed so to speak, just information/screenshots. The idea is to provide the information, and let the community review the game.
I have an offer for those who need to share files
Hello everyone,
There is a known issue that most cloud share sites like dropbox and box.net loose sharing due to bandwidth allocation issues.. with that said, I have a offer for you if you need to share development files here.
I am a technology solutions provider for the whole region where I live, (in the united states) and I offer you my personal site http://hazard1nc.com it has limited bandwidth for now, but the more people sign up for accounts using my link provided in the first post on my site, you will notice that it says it will give me more features, theses features include bandwidth and more storage, its my dream ultimately to self host but due to new baby being born and taking care of 6 people hinder such dreams for now.
So if you need storage and bandwidth, I rarely use my site as I'm busy running my business and being a family man, if I can help out with this, I'd be happy to do so! So thanks for reading and I hope that this can help you.
Are you offering housing space for development?
I am offering a place to share, I don't have much to offer in terms of anyway to have a CVS repo or anything, but I am offering a place to put your final test projects for members both here and there to test on. If it was self hosted (money issues) I'd offer what more I could.
Sent from my SGH-I927
Hell if you can make the site work for development purposes and give me feedback on plugins and such that I should add, I'd be happy to listen.
If it's a money making site then I'm afraid that isn't allowed here on XDA.
Its not about making money, I am doing it out of the kindness of my heart and funding it myself. I just said that I don't have the funds currently.
I won't turn away donations, the site itself was just a way to share my tech interests with my local community freely offering tips and tricks for their computer needs as I am the only technology consultant around for 100 miles.
In reality, I just don't have time, I was going to post my local services on a page but if that makes it bad for helping people here then I won't
Would you happen to be able to give Team Aurora (ItsMeBdon, Shawn, me) a part of your site where we can upload? We're nearing our Dropbox limit and don't really have any other options :|
Thanks!
I kinda jumped before looking, id be happy to assist but my host caps uploads at 8mb if you can keep it in that range I'd be happy to, I'm looking for another host and might have found one, keep in touch with me and I will do my best. I gotta make sure they don't cap my uploads to the server but I'd be happy to once I get the right host
Okay guys I'm sorry it took me so long, I found a new host but can't take my domain with just yet to it.. not going into details why, but if you want me to host your projects, I will be happy to do so.
I am also surprised that none of you share bigger files like roms and such on bittorrent.. would seem more ideal to share this way and its more safe as it uses hashes to piece the app back together.. anyways that's not the point.
I have a list of numerous different share sites and cloud technologies on this page here.
Most note worthy of the cloud servers would have to be ADrive.com giving away 50gb storage for free for banners, and as long as you set your hosts files just right, you don't even see a single banner or ad, I haven't yet anyways.
I just hope that this helps everyone who working on these projects and I will do my best to keep these site lists current for you and add more as we go along.
I am just sorry it took me so long to get setup, my wife about to give birth any day now, my 4th and its been mad hectic with work and steess, but the site is down right now on the new host and will be for a couple weeks.
Thank you all for being patient and I will get this going for you, I'll put up polls and such so you can help me make the site better for your needs in this way..
Anyways, busy times for me ahead,will try to pop in when I can yo test for those who need a tester, but gonna be hectic more so for a few months, will keep updated on the sites progress and will need some help testing that when able, sign up for that when its more close to the end, maybe a couple weeks more, at the latest.
Honestly, I'm very glad that people don't host their roms via bittorrent, as it's a nightmare for anyone who's looking to snag something for an older phone. I often find myself in possession of old android hardware, and I repurpose them for VoIP phones or other misc. With older hardware, it's often unbearably slow on the official rom, and the best solution is to track down something custom.
I just spent like 4 hours tracking down a rom for the Huawei Ascend M860, over half of the links were dead, and an entire site where a large portion of the development took place had folded because of the age of the device. With torrents, it's easy for something less popular like an older device to lose what few seeds it had, while a reliable mirror site will at least be up for reasonable amount of time.
