[Guide] How to apply an update.zip to a stock Xoom (3G/WIFI) (with a USB-Host cable) - Xoom Android Development

Hi everyone, I just managed to get my completely stock Xoom updated via USB host-cable... some instructions:
REQUIRED:
USB HOST CABLE
FAT32 USB THUMB DRIVE
3G Instructions:
1) Place the update.zip (can have any filename you like) on the usb stick.
2) Connect the USB stick to the host cable and connect the host cable to the Xoom.
3) Power off
4) Power on, tap (ONLY TAP) volume down a few times until you get a list of options you can cycle through.
5) Select Android Recovery
6) Tap Volume up to boot into recovery
7) Hold power and tap volume up at the green android screen to get the BLUE recovery menu
8) Select apply update from USB drive
9) Select your update.zip from the menu... enjoy!
As for the 3.1 Update, if you get into a boot loop, just hold power and volume up to get out of it.
WIFI ONLY USERS:
There is no menu option for android recovery, you'll need to use:
adb reboot recovery
you can plug in the usb stick at the green android guy screen

good stuff, wish i had a host cable

Wifi version? Or only 3g?

Im assuming its the same, but he tested it on a wifi i think

How about if we don't have the Host cable?

Anyone searching for a cheap host cable can find one here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00474OYLG . It also ships pretty fast.

Can anyone suggest a USB host cable? There's plenty of USB micro to USB female cables on Amazon, and I really can't tell them apart. I'd prefer something with Amazon Prime, but the smaller the converter the better...
Thanks!

I got a random $2 one from ebay, I think it shipped from china. It MUST be a HOST cable, not a converter.

Thanks, I realize that some of them work, I just can't figure out which is which. Can you provide a link or did you just get lucky with the one you got? Nothing on amazon makes it clear which is which...

I'm trying this out right now but I'm not getting Android Recovery as an option. I plugged the stick in, powered it on, tapped the down rocker and I get 3 options: NvFlash, RSD, Fastboot. What could be wrong here. I'm on a stock WiFi Xoom.

This would only work on 3g, as wifi only doesn't have a boot to recovery option in the choices.

You can try
adb reboot recovery
But you need to plug in the usb stick right away or it won't recognize it.
The very first option when tapping volume down should be recovery

Newb with USB issues

Hello all. I'm TK, newb who has been lurking for a while. The forum has led me to some awesome changes with my Evo, but that may be catching up with me. I'm still rooted and running CM 7 with SZ 1.01, and none of my computers are able to recognize the USB drive on my phone, regardless of which cable I use.
I can't get ADB to work on my PC, so I'm not able to perform any commands for the phone.
Can anyone help me with this issue? It would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Do you have debugging(in application settings) on when trying to use adb? What about allow mock locations? Try turning debugging off and then turn it back on(while plugged in USB). If that doesn't work you could always go to recovery mode and enable USB toggle and get it connected that way. Also make sure you're actually pulling down the notification bar and selecting "mount".

Does your phone get recognized at all on your computer when you plug it in? If not you may have a hardware problem -> usb port is loose.
On my original cord that came with the phone I had to trim off about 2 centimeters off of the plastic to go in far enough to have my Toshiba laptop to read it. I have had to do the same thing to several cords since. Maybe your usb?

Yes, my computer just says that it doesn't recognize the hardware. it charges just fine by the computer.
I'm running ClockworkMod for my recovery, I'll check for USB Toggle there.
No joy on finding USB Toggle.
It's called something different. Can't remember but it's there, I believe. I've only been in Clockwork recovery like once.

[Q] Cant mount USB, get to DL mode

Hi Guys/Gals
ive done a bit of searching and have tried everything i could think of but still no DL mode, and cant mount USB
I started having a problem with my mic ... thought it might be the ROM so i wiped dalvik, problem was still there. Then did a factory reset, problem still there
Thought i would try a different ROM, but when i went to plug my USB in, my PC would promt me with a USB device not recognized window. I tried mounting USB via USB utilities - No Go. Tried with debugging mode off, still no go.
I have reinstalled the USB drivers, still no go.
The phone also turns on when plugged into wall power, or will not stay shut down ... hrmmm
Im curious if the mic and USB issues are related and it is a hardware malfunction.
Any tips, help, or advice would be GREATLY appreciated right about now.
Thanks XDA!
Welp ... got DL mode on my work PC. Will try to get back to factory and see if that resolves the USB and Mic issues.
Pretty weird considering I tried it a few million times.
Scratch that. Got DL mode, once, can no longer. Wtf is going on.
Holding volume+/- and inserting USB cable. Am I doing something wrong? Its sending me straight to CWM recovery everytime.
Tried to do a restore from a point but got an MD5 sum mismatch

Not a newb when it comes to getting to DL mode if the phone is opperating normally. (obviously if ive come from CM7, and ICS as an original vibrant owner, and was running a rooted SGS2)
Went ahead and ordered a new phone. Am going to spend the couple bucks on the DL mode USB plug, might be able to save something from the old phone.
Im pretty sure something happened to the phone that affected the ports on the USB and MIC at the same time. But we'll see once i try the plug ...

Is It Possible To Use USB Devices with the Kindle Fire?

I got a little micro usb to usb adapter for a buck and I've tried connected a few flash drives and a keyboard to it but nothing seems to happen.
Is there anyway to get usb devices to work with the kindle or no?

Yes, there are certain USB devices that work great with the Kindle Fire. First thing is, the device must be rooted and running a custom ROM. A recent JB ROM will do just nicely and CM7 on the Kindle DOES NOT SUPPORT OTG.
I successfully use a Logitech k120 keyboard without any problems. Usually as soon as I plug it in, the Kindle will recognize it and then it's useable. The keyboard DOES NOT require a powered USB hub. I also can use a USB optical mouse but a powered USB hub IS REQUIRED for that as the Kindle does not have enough power output from its micro-USB port.
I haven't really tried to mount a flash drive yet but some do require a powered hub and others do not.
Are you using an actual OTG adapter? I bought one off an online auction site for $2 and it was labeled for "Samsung" devices but that doesn't matter.
Thanks for your reply.
This is the adapter I bought:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005QX7KYU/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Did I get the wrong one?
Is there a notification to let you know it recognized a device? Anything in the settings I have to change?

That's the same one I bought. On the 4.2.2 ROM I run, as soon as I plug in the keyboard to the adapter some notification DOES come up but I can't remember what it says lol. If I try to plug in the USB optical mouse WITHOUT a powered hub, the mouse lights up indeed but that's all it does. It does not function other than lighting up.
I'm currently typing this on CM7 as my Kindle is set up to dual boot. Some keyboards are not compatible at all, I couldn't tell you which ones exactely but I remember seeing that stated somewhere down the line.
In reference to the Settings, there is nothing I had to change keyboard wise to get it to function. There are simple options for the mouse cursor like speed. The flash drive is a different story and many people have had to use apps like Stickmount and such to get them to work. Unfortunately flash drives are hit or miss and a couple different approaches have been used to mount them.
Hope that helps

[Q] Broken micro usb - recovery?

Hi everyone,
My micro usb port has physically broken off my ouya and it is now booting to a black screen. I can get the restore screen up by holding sysrq key, alt key and pressing the "i" key. There is an option for factory reset but it doesn't seem to do any thing. What are my recovery options or is it bricked? Could I connect via normal USB anyway?
Thanks,

it has physically broken off of the OUYA? How did that happen? Sounds like you most likely broke the console...not just bricked it.

oh buddy, thats never good. even if you get into recovery, you still need a wired connection to sideload an OTA (which is what you need to do)
it seems that the micro usb port is the only port used for adb. sorry.
and just so i have it straight, the port broke off, THEN it won't boot? if i may ask, wtf did you do to it? were you goofin around and messed up something software? or did the port break, then it just won't boot because of it?
The ouya locked up on me. I was running a terminal emulator on it and it froze completely and had no choice but to reboot. While trying to reconnect to pc via micro usb it kept losing connection and I kept trying different cables and it physically snapped off on me. I can only boot to recovery screen now using usb keyboard.

hmmm...well, recovery mode is good, but you NEED wired adb to sideload. (i know i already said that.)
are you any good with a soldering iron? honestly, that little port is your only way in, so if you can get it back on correctly, that'd be great.
idk if you're into being a criminal, but maybe just go buy one, then switch the boards and return it- say it wasn't what you thought it was going to be.
i'm here for you buddy, but it doesn't look good.
lord uencemc
I've thought about soldering but the usb port above it prevents this. However, I'm having some joy holding port in place. It's tricky but PC is picking it up as MTP device so if i get it installed i may be able to hold in place long enough to connect and reflash...

:cyclops: well, there it is! ok, how about this- what if you got a friend to hold it together while you sideloaded? OR! do you have a small clamp or vice or vice-grips? they could help hold it in place while you do stuff. besure to wrap metal tools in tape before you touch them to the metal parts.
this, apparently, is NOT hopeless! worse thing ever would be to transfer stuff and half way through loss connection.
get a dependable friend/quality tools.
hang in there brother. :highfive:
edit:btw- if you haven't already, you should probably take the opportunity to flash CWM. then sideload the OTA. its up to you.

So I know if you plug a computer with an A to A cable it stays in the bootloader to allow you to use fastboot. I wonder if it sees something plugged in and just is like "oh well" and stays in the bootloader.

If it's staying on the white logo, then it is definitely in fastboot. I haven't messed with it much, but I did notice once that the Fire TV was being powered by the USB port, which caused boot issues. It's possible that getting power through the USB port is enough to put it in fastboot. Perhaps your harddrive or hub is sending power to the Fire TV, causing fastboot to kick in.

Ah, there you go. It's the Y cable that's causing your issue. If you used a powered USB hub you probably won't have this issue.
Hmm i see, i will try the powered hub. Thanks for the input. Will respond back when i get it and post rwsults
I also have this issue. I have a powered usb hub with 10 ports. I use it to plug in my HD and RF remote and RF keyboard. It will not reboot. It just stays stuck on the white amazon logo. I thought It was stuck in boot loop. Now I know the powered usb hub is the problem. I unplugged it and now FTV boots as normal. So I guess we can't have powered usb hubs?

powered hubs and non-powered hubs worked for me with usb flash sticks and 2.4Ghz keyboard. Never tried a HD.
This happens to me when using a Powered USB Hub, it will not boot and stick to the first Amazon Logo.
When I'm using the same USB Hub with no power cable plugged it, it boots successfully.
