[R] Modifications to .apks - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know enough to root/fix my phone when I inevitably break it due to tweaking but little to nothing (mostly nothing) about theming or writing/editing apps.
So I'd like someone with such knowledge to help me out with something. In Handcent and some other messaging apps have the option to vibrate only when the phone is on silent as an option. I'd like this option written into the default mms.apk or some instructions/tutorial or something else I can monkey around with to do it myself.
In addition though not really a high priority, I'd like a way to possibly change the Desk Clock.apk so it will instead open Winamp instead of the default music player app. Or again, some kind of tutorial that I can end up figuring it out myself. Not important at all but I like to leave Desk Clock on while at work and it would just eliminate some extra clicks for me.
Thank you in advance for your time and all the work everyone has done on these themes and developing <3
EDIT: Also is it possible to update the BIOS animation .zips to be flashable in CWM3, I knew some people were asking about it but I'm not sure what ended up happening to that.

Bumping after a day.

[Q] Screen Resolution

Is the screen resolution info stored in the ROM itself or within the kernel?
I was comparing the EC01 (Fascinate) to our EC03 (Continuum) ROM and noticed they are almost identical. This leads me to believe that if we could adjust the screen resolution within the Fascinate ROMs we may be able to use them. Of course this would mean loss of Ticker functionality unless we can somehow incorporate the Ticker API's into the Fascinate ROMs (which might be asking too much right now)
Anyway just some ideas..
-J
It is stored in the rom
Proved with this simple test : with our kernel and our rom = right resolution... With our kernel and fascinate rom = wrong resolution...
Hope that helps!
You know what I was doing? Replacing each framework one by one in the fascinate rom from the Continuum until things would work...
Of course I couldn't do it for long, had to be with gfs family xP but I am on the way home now!

Why dont we just replace the entire framework rezip it and try installing it?
The thing is, that would probably work.... But:
That would kinda kill the point, lol.... All the mods done to the framework folder to get miui, tsm mods, six lock screens, and etc would immediately disappear... I was hoping we could maintain some of the original framework.... But, that might not be possible.....

maybe Imnuts knows what the display driver modules look like so we can swap them out?

if yall need any help with roms let me know im knew to the continuum and the whole odin thing but i can figure it out pretty quick.
I came from the sprint hero and before that i had the mt3g.
The screen info is stored in the kernel, as far as where the screen starts/ends and how big it should be total for pixels wide/tall. From what I've seen, there are only two differences in the kernel from the Fascinate, the touchscreen driver (for ticker/softkeys) and the screen driver, to also add controls for the ticker/softkeys. I doubt the ticker will work in an AOSP ROM without a lot of hacking to make it functional, but we should be able to get the screen and softkeys working.
i absulutly despise that ticker lol im always pressing it by accident everything else about the phone i love i honestly couldnt ask anything more from it accept for my unlimited data plan back lol.
Imnuts, when you've been digging around in the kernel and the rom, have you noticed if the ticker is something that can be customized or tweaked? For instance, I'd love to be able to direct Google Navigation's ongoing notification info to the Ticker....I'd love to be able to direct the Google Voice notification to the Ticker
I'm just curious if you've noticed how "hackable" the Ticker is
@TBlazer.. I think this is what we might be looking for...

[REQ] Help with lockscreen source

Alright, here's the deal. Any music app that I've tried seems to run into the same problem--once the screen turns off, the current playing song will play through and then the player stops playing. I'm trying to play on a "shuffle all" setting, so it should progress to the next track, but doesn't.
I have wiped the phone. I have flashed a few of the roms from this forum. No matter what, it's the same behavior. The built-in music player works fine, I just don't care for it (the "shuffle all" feature requires that you play a song first to get to it, ugh).
So, I'm wondering if the proprietary lockscreen has something to do with it. I know that, if music is playing, info is displayed on the lockscreen, but only with the sammy music app. I was hoping to look through the source code to see if I could determine more about it, but I really don't know much about the structure of android and I'm not sure where to begin. I've used APK Manager to open up framework-res.apk, but beyond that I am not seeing anything there that might help.
Are there any devs that might know what to look for, and where? It doesn't seem like framework-res.apk really governs anything, it mostly just handles displaying things.
I don't remember exactly where but its either inside framework.jar or framework-res.apk. you will need to decompile them first.
I would say to not bother with the hassle. Whitehawk is going to work on a rom with lockscreens options that has music controls settings..

only actual development can be in DEV section
this is more of a [REQ]UEST at this point
One day, I might actually get it right. I swear the rules in the forums feel different for every phone I've had, lol.
You might give this a whirl and see if it fixes it - https://market.android.com/details?id=org.jraf.android.nolock
Lockscreen files will be in the android.policy.jar and framework.jar. The images for the lockscreen are in the framework-res.
Alright, so I tried the nolock app, and it doesn't solve this issue. Clearly, Samsung has done something ridiculous in their kernel that is keeping other music players from working correctly, but it's way too outside my capabilities right now to figure out how or what.

[REQ] Restore old default-open-with-application Picker in JB

Hey there,
the new picker for the default program to open something annoys me... now you always gotta do 2 clicks. Before (in gingerbread e.g.) you could simply tap an application and only needed to do 2 clicks when u wanted to set it as default application.
Further, I'm always getting a notification now where I can dleete the default settings. It's annoying.
Any possibility to restore the old picker or at least to remove the notification?
running wanam v3.6. (dl18 leak)
thanks!
edit: what I mean...
Indeed very annoying.. Would want to know how to remove that notification myself too.. thanks for opening this thread.. +1.
+1
The choice prompt is built into android jb, and is part of the base system. I'm sure it could be hacked away, but android purists will advocate that it is kept intact. I'm one of those..
But the super annoying Samsung prompt that pops up afterwards, telling us that we can clear defaults, is just plain rude. It is not part of aosp. After I've seen it once, do I really need to be reminded every time I set a default..? No option to turn off this "help"? Flashing and restoring leaks and running a lot of replacement apps I must have seen this popup more than a hundred times.
I hope Devs take notice and fix this. If not for me (I'm on cm10 now) at least for everybody that runs and enjoy stock roms.
Perhaps a small zip cwm file..
Edit:
Apologies for the rant, I just hate the ekstra prompt Sammy added
+1 from me too

[Q] Help for visually impaired

Hello. I have a quick question for you guys.
My aunt showed up at my house with a new gn2. The only problem is she has vision loss and is finding it difficult to see the icons on the phone even with size set on huge.
Is there a way to create a custom widget? I'm thinking if I can make a widget the size of the home screen (for phone, contacts, Internet etc) and then have as many home screen size widgets as she needs.
I would probably only need a few.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Ultimate Custom Widget will do the job.
There are tutorials on youtube, and a few threads on xda here.
Lightning Launcher may be worth a look too. Infinite home screens, and can enlarge text and widgets.
Why not ask or make yourself a custom rom specifically for people like this.
Something that heavily incorporates/based on svoice.
Svoice imho is her best bet
Honestly if her vision is that bad its not going to get better.
Maybe someone can make a rom like this
For people with disabilities?
Why dont you start a bounty and maybe others will donate. I would.
For now now that she has some vision to
See maybe the easist is to make an icon that is so visually different she would recognize it. This icon would takes her right to svoice.
I guese for now home button is her friend have it start svoice and she should be gtg.
Hope you work it out ....
Edit: in reply to tpam cuz im a slomofointyper... I dont think another launcher is the key.
My granma started losing her vision late 80's and eventually "bigger" was not better. You gotta think of longterm in her case. She eventually became "legally blind" she could stil see shapes and light but even after we got her a digital projector to project news or we from the computer it didnt matter.
I miss her so much
Superdoubleedit: for icons use 8bit believe it or not she will be able to see or recognize them better. Like an 8bit icon of we will be a lot easier for her to process then some high rez image.
Ok im done ...I promise
You can try this launcher that comes with everything big

Changing SPen Sounds && More

Hey guys! Punk9 here!
I was wondering, back on the Note 2/3 there were threads up for changing SPen sounds, UI Sounds, battery mods, time/date mods (for instance to center it) and many other mods. I was wondering how everyone here has done that? How do you guys customize your set ups?
If we have enough participation and we get alot of ideas i woudn't mind keeping up a thread in themes and apps with all of your guys ideas.
Post screenshots if you guys want!
I'd like to know as well. I re-downloaded the note 2 lightsaber sounds thinking I could have some luck in getting that to work....but I cannot
Try out the free app on Google Play called "S Pen Toolbox". That's what I use and you can assign any sound you like for the S Pen.
Also, if you have any questions about it, just ask.
It's easy if you have root, you just need your sound in the same format as the original (mostly .ogg), root and a file manager that can see root (solid explorer is a good option). Just go to /system/media/audio/ui and rename the old sound to back it up (something like Pen_det_noti1.ogg.old) and then just copy your new sound over and give it the same name. Also, make sure it has the same permission as the old file (644 chmod). You may need to restart for it to take effect. You can also change the sound for low battery, camera shutter, etc here.
For all other UI things, just use xposed framework and Wanam Xposed. You can move the clock and do a whole lot of UI tweaks with that.
I use note buddy (primarily because it was the first one I learned about). I was going to try to figure out spend helper to see which I prefer.
Note buddy allows sPen and headset options. Works well for me.
