Defy screen freezes when calling - Defy General

Help, my Defy is 8 weeks old and has been back to Motorola's UK repair centre twice, for the same problem. Every time i try to make a call from the keypad or from within the contacts, the phone dials the number and then the screen goes blank and freezes, the buttons are also disabled, it continues the call rendering the touchscreen unusable, if the call is unanswered the phone has to have the battery removed to enable further use. Motorola want me to send the phone back to their repair centre again, but after two hopeless attempts to rectify this i want a new replacement. Am i being unreasonable ?

It's a faulty device.
They should replace it from first time.
Instead they update firmware only.
Go back there and threaten them a bit.
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App

Sure, if they'll give you a new phone. Have you tried a factory reset?

Tried that
Been on the phone numerous times to all sorts at Motorola UK, but they insist on sticking to three attempts to repair it. I should have also added that initially the phones camera had a row of dead pixels top to bottom which looked like every shot had a black felt pen draw a line through it, they replaced the CMOS sensor on it's first visit visit so overall the impression is of a pretty crappy build quality, or rubbish quality control..... Current position is i am waiting a call back from Cust Services after i dug my heels in and demanded a replacement, threatened Trading standards intrvention so we shall await their response.

Anybody have any ideas as to what causes this problem ?

Sounds like an issue with the proximity sensor. It;s supposed to do that when you have it up to your ear, but it sounds like yours is doing it regardless of the phone being close to your ear or not.

New Phone
Thanks for the replies, MOTOROLA UK have now agreed to replace the faulty unit with a new one.......

Screen shuts off when slid up!

So... all of a sudden, everytime i slide the screen up, it shuts the screen off. I slide it back, hit the power button a few times, then it turns back on?

Power off your phone, remove the battery and then put it back in, making sure it fits in there snuggly.
That has happened to me, and removing/replacing the battery fixed it.
Yes, as Amy noted this behavior is often attributed to the battery not sitting exactly right in the compartment. Sometimes just popping it out and back in is enough, but some people have reported needeing to slip a small piece of paper or something similar under the battery cover as well to help keep it snug. (It seems that the sliding motion can be enough to shake the battery off the contacts if it's not secure enough).
Let us know if that clears it up
okay. what the deuce.
my tp2 just literally started doing the same.
earlier today it was perfectly fine.
but now.
i slide out the keyboard and the screen goes blank.
i tried the remove battery and restart.
didn't help.
i tried the paper between battery and cover.
didn't help either.
the screen only goes blank when completely slid out.
if i hold it open just before completely open the screen is still on.
any suggestions?
thanks.
Yea, none of those things worked. However, keeping the battery snug helped with the issue of not hearing anything through the handset.
It honestly sounds to me like both of you are dealing with a loose connection between the screen and the motherboard somewhere, either power or video feed, can't say for sure which. Unless you're willing to disassemble your rhodium (which isn't impossible, just complex), it sounds like it's time to send it to a service center (for AT&T) or to HTC, since that would be a warranty repair.
I hope that this is just freak coincidence that both of you had this happen just now, and not a sign that we're all at risk of having the same issue eventually
How long have each of you had your phones?
EDIT: One more question for you guys...whatever is on the display on your screen rotates into landscape before the display shuts off right?

i have own the phone for about three weeks...
though. bought it used from a friend who had it for four months.
but my friend bought it used from somebody too...
aka. not sure how long it has been used.
the display is rotated. and stays on as long as the right side is held.
before the 'tilt piece' is revealed. as soon as it is. the screen goes blank.
and i believe it would be the video feed...
i can still type with the keyboard. just can't see what i am typing.
unless i hold the screen from sliding completely out on the right.
and about the warranty...
would i have a warranty with htc still?
don't have proof of purchase.
just the phone and original box.
thanks.
My AT&T Tilt 2 has been exhibiting this behavior for some weeks now. It seems to be centered around the keyboard slide, but the behavior comes and goes. I found that slamming the phone on the desktop would bring it back to life for a little while, but then it would start to clap out again in a few days. What a pile.
Anyway, I have a fresh one from AT&T to swap out. Now all I have to do is get all my applications and stuff transferred over to the new phone before sending the craprod back to them.

Oh boy...yeah I didn't realize you'd gotten it third-hand. Well it has been less than a year since the Rhodium was released, so it's possible that HTC will still honor the 1-year manufacturer's warranty, but I can't guarantee it. My suggestion would be to just contact HTC America's service group (1-888-617-1113) and see what they say.
Best case: they agree to cover the repair
Worst case: an example of one of the risks you take when you buy something through "unofficial" channels
Yea luckily for me, I bought it second hand, but it was purchased from a retail store, meaning I got a warranty exchange. I just sent it back.
having same issue
im having same issue, when the phone is slid open, goes black, nothing gets it back on, the buttons light up, display dead
however, if i place it in stand by via power button in regular mode, then slide it open, it works, ive rattled and shook the phone, never goes back off, im typing this with it open and tilted....
any ideas?
prob leaving the htc community, samsung captivate, blackberry torch, or htc aria are my choices from at

[Q] Bad proximity sensor?

I've noticed from day one that sometimes the proximity sensor seems to be a bit goofy on my phone. Sometimes the screen would go blank immediately after starting a call, and nothing I could do could bring it back except for putting it back up to my face and pulling it away again.
Welp, now the sensor seems to be totally dead unless I smack the phone with my hand. It makes calls, but the display goes blank and no buttons will work at all until the other person hangs up (doesn't matter if it's incoming or outgoing). I've only had the phone for a week. If I have it away from my face and smack the front of the phone with the palm of my hand the display comes back on and all buttons start working again for a few seconds, then it'll go blank again.
I've reverted it back to the stock DI18 that it came with and formatted the SD card (along with wiping everything more times than I can count). Anything else I should try before I take it back to Sprint tomorrow?

Mine is doing the same.... even worse actually. If the other side doesn't hang up (after taking call and it going blank)..... I have to do a battery pull to fix the issue until the next call. Other times (smaller percentage)... the screen won't turn off at all while talking on it. Either way is unacceptable. I don't know what is causing it... I tried to do a complete wipe and have stock rom.... but it didn't fix the problem. This only starting happening a few weeks ago. I took it into a sprint store and they ordered me a new phone (out of stock). It's still under warrantly... so all is good I hope. I plan on dumping Samsung once a better Gingerbread HTC phone comes out early next year. Samsung support sucks!
Mine goes blank on every single call - only way to get the phone to respond is by removing the battery or smacking the **** out of the front of it with my hand (at which point it brings up the normal in-call screen). Really annoying especially since I just got it on Tuesday.
Hopefully the store near me has some of them in stock. It's also a service center, and a fairly large corporate owned store, so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to swap it tomorrow.
So, the screen stays black until the call is ended right? Well, I have a solution for ending the call if the otherside doesnt hang up anyway, if your running 2.2...
You can set the power key to end calls, that way you can easily disconnect the call without having to have the screen on. I know this isnt a solution, but it may work as a stop gap until you can get it working correctly.
Menu->Settings->Accessibility-> (If a box pops up saying 'No accessibility applications found', just hit cancel) -> Check the box next to 'The power key ends calls'
If your not running 2.2, you can do this by editing one of the key map files, just follow the how to in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849075
That is an option, but it'd be a lot nicer if the phone actually worked the way it's supposed to.
Turns out the corporate owned stores are open late during the holidays, I swung by a little while ago and they confirmed the sensor was borked. Swapped it out on the spot.
Thanks though.

same here... they were out of stock though...and ordered me one. I wonder what caused the sensor to be broken?
this is not a sensor problem, i have this problem and only had it after having the "leaked" 2.2 froyo build, and flashing back to eclair.
this problem didnt happen on 2.2, but now it happens to me on 2.1
Same thing, when i make a call, screen is dead, the only way to get it back is to have the other person hang up.
I have the same issue. I make a call, put the phone to my ear and the screen goes blank. Say I'm calling my credit card company and need to enter in my credit card number via the keypad to continue, I take the phone from my ear back to horizontal in front of me and the screen won't turn on. I can press all buttons, open and shut the keyboard but nothing gets the screen to turn back on until the phone call is disconnected, or I pull the battery.
I don't have insurance through Sprint or Best Buy. I got the phone the first day it was available last fall. I flashed back to stock and still had the issue, the most I ever did was root and clockworkmod. What should I do? Do I have a manufactures warrenty? What kind of process is that, will I be stuck with a POS phone for a month like I was with my Touch Pro back when I had Best Buy replace that...

I think this would fall under the "manufactures warrenty" since you might have a possible hardware failure already within a year. I would call and ask to find out.
While I'm waiting to stop at the Sprint store after work I downloaded a few sensor test programs from the market. The ones that support the proximity sensor never give me a value when doing the tests. They usually just sit there in a status of "Waiting for sensor". Does anyone know how Sprint can test the sensor or will they just do what I've done?

I know there are phone codes that will put you in the test hardware mode, I did this a while back when I got the epic. If I can remember as you come closer to the phone with the hand or whatever you use either the screen would turn off or it would vibrate maybe it did both like I said I can't remember.
I did some homework for you via Google of course, I tried it out and it worked, a screen will popup when you enter the codes pick sensors...just cover up the prox sensor and the value will change from 0 to a 1 and vibrate.
*#0*# - LCD TEST
red/green/blue/melody/vibration/dimming/megacam/Sensor/touch/sleepmode/LED/RECEIVER
Very useful tests for the LCD
I didn't know they had a hardware diagnostics built in. Thanks for the info. Looks like my proximity sensor doesn't change from 1.0 when I cover up the phone. I had a friend do similiar tests with his EVO and it switch from 1.0 to 0.0 when you got your finger about 0.25 inches away from the sensor. Thanks again.
Just to follow up, I took the phone to my local sprint store, which now is a repair center, and they took a look at it and said that they could fix it for $35. I don't have TEP on it so that is why I paid $35. I picked it up today and they put a new screen (top half of the slider) on to fix it and tightened up the looseness of the slider as well. Well worth the $35 in my mind. Although they forgot to put the micro usb cover back on so I have to stop back and see if that is laying around on the work bench.

Weird Issue with Sound

Hi all,
Been having some problems with my Defy's earpiece.
Abit of background, before it started acting up:-
1. Damaged the screen and LCD in a fall, phone could turn on but nothing visible on screen
2. Sent to repair in a mobile phone repair shop, they replaced the screen and LCD
Phone now works fine, but the earpiece works abit randomly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to work more often when I receive calls, compared to when I make calls.
The only way I can make a call is by checking first whether the earpiece is working, by logging on to Skype and calling the Echo/Test Sound Service thing. If it's working at the time, then I can make the call as usual. If it's not working, I usually end up having to use the speaker, which works fine.
Is this issue likely to be due to manufacturing problems, or could it have been damaged (along with the screen and LCD) when I fell?
I got the phone in December 2010. I would take it into a T-Mobile store to see if the warranty covers it, but I have a feeling they might somehow know that I sent it elsewhere to get the screen and LCD replaced - I'm guessing this would void my warranty.
Any suggestions on what I should do?
Would appreciate any help, thanks
They definitely know you'd sent the phone to another shop for repair. All phones having the warranty sticker sitting in the battery compartment. Now all you can do is pray they just go blindly repair your phone..

Hmm.. thanks, I might just bring it back to the shop that repaired the screen for me.. if it's too expensive then maybe I'll try change the earpiece myself..

[Q] Left my phone in my car, haptic/vibrations no longer work

Last night I left my phone in my car after the gym, from maybe 3PM till 5/6PM. No biggie really, it was in the spot I always keep it, completely dry etc. Well I went out to get it, the phone was stupidly cold and when I brought it back inside I noticed air condensing on the screen. I turned the screen on, and there was no haptic feedback pulling down the lock screen (MIUI .. cant remember which build).
And so now, I have NO haptic feedback or vibration from texts or calls. I'm not 100% sure what caused it, but because I had been using it at around 2.30PM and it worked, it must be down to the cold or condensation. Could anyone assist me as to how I can fix this? (It's an early/mid December Desire HD)
Cheers
You can't, it's a hardware problem...
Return it to stock and send it for warranty...
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Is it still under warranty after a year and 2 months?
Where are you from?
Business or private costumer?
Where did you buy?

I believe we bought it private though we do have a business contract with them

It is always better to send it back for warranty if you still have it. Otherwise I would suggest thorough examination on the phone. It is not too long ago my haptic feedback went crazy and not functioning properly as it will only produce subtle vibration. So, I open up the LED compartment and realised that the rotating mechanism had something stuck between the rotor and the casing.
But anyway, I think your phone has short circuitry or hardware failure imo if there is no reaction from the rotor itself. Good luck with repairing though.

You're saying the rotator near the LED / under the mesh at the top of the phone? If so this would explain a lot as IIRC I wiped the screen upwards with my thumb and may have gotten a few droplets into it - stupid as, I know.
How long is the warranty on these anyway? Everywhere seems to state different periods.
Hmmm, idk...you should have asked your reseller or confront them directly. Even on AP, there should be at least 1 year warranty or so. Check your warranty card if available. Pretty self explanatory eh? Hahaha...good luck then.

TMobile LG G4 Turned off and wont come back on

This is a Fully Stock, Fully OTA updated, TMobile LG G4 "May" Build.
Ok, irony is to follow... "I just finished paying off my LG G4" and a couple days ago... I woke up, unplugged the phone, Opened Hangouts and started a text message. The screen completely locked up within seconds. I pushed the power button to turn the screen off and it did so. I pushed it again to turn the screen on. It took a few seconds before coming back on and seemed sluggish so I powered down the phone. At this point the phone was DEAD.
I tried charging it, even though it charged all night, but nothing even shows on the screen. I tried booting into safemode/recovery nothing at all happens. I tried another battery from a working LG G4 and nothing at all. Nothing on the screen, no vibration... Just Darkness. Water sticker is white and there has never been any water or physical damage.
-Bought this phone from TMobile for use on Family Mobile. TMobile says "because it is not in use on our lines we cant do anything".
-TMobile goes on to say that the warranty is up anyway...
-I have seen that this is a Known issue by TMobile and LG all over the internet with people getting replacements
Questions:
-Should I try to contanct Family Mobile or would that be a waste of time?
-Should TMobile replace a product with a known defect even after warranty?
-Should LG replace a product with a known defect even after warranty?
-If those fail are there ways out of warranty to revive the phone?
Suggestions Please and Thank You!!
I sent the phone into LG and it took them 5 days to come back with a diagnosis. The results were shocking coming from a company that I personally swore by for years now because of their product quality.
The diagnosis was "Touch Window needs replaced". I almost punched a wall when I saw that. I have a tiny hair line scratch at the top pf the Digitizer from my keys and that is their Diagnosis for why my phone shut off and wont turn back on. They gave me a price to fix the screen and explained nothing about the power issue. Contacting them only furthered my frustration as all 5 members of Customer Support played the same broken record. I asked the following; "What is being done about the power issue?", "Why cant you just fix the power issue?", "What was the cause of the phone not powering on?", "Why cant you tell me why the phone wont power on?". They all repeated; "We fix the whole device in general especially if it has physical damage or defects", "You can choose to pay for the repair or not pay", "The touch screen was found to be damaged or have cosmetic issues". They refused to even acknowledge the power issue because of this tiny little scratch that allows them to hide the real issue.
So now I have to decide either to pay them an absurd amount ($153) to replace the Digitizer and let them tuck the power issue under the rug -or- Have them send it back to me, replace the digitizer ($40 actual cost) myself and send it back and see what they charge and have to say.... I am willing to bet at that point they come back and say, "Your phone is out of warranty we can offer you a refurbished phone for $153". Which, is probably what they are actually charging me for and not a Touch Window because I am guessing the main board is defective and that is why they don't want to talk about it.
I am very upset with LG over this... bad Customer Support when they are trained to repeat the same answers over and over to different questions and never really answer the questions.
