Lapdock - Atrix 4G Accessories

Hello,
I thought it was time to start a thread about Lapdock that is not about were to get the best price. But for technical questions like mine.
For some reason I can't get any picture when watching any video, just sound? Any ideas?
Cheers

I am not sure if Webtop uses the "original" Flash, but have you tried updating your flash to 10.3? Or re-installing it?
Also, sometimes the webtop messes up a bit (all icons on the right were gone for me today), but a reboot should fix that - maybe it's even enough to kill the webtop processes, whatever they are.

Lapdock Hack
If someone could hack the lapdock to provide a good remote desktop item for it it would be great. I tried the Citrix demo last night and if we could get the same thing to come into my Windows machine it would be great.
Anyone has any ideas?
I have tried Pocket Cloud running on the phone but although it is functional it is not that good.

Teamviewer web "works" but it's a little laggy. At least on my hacked to work on normal displays webtop.

I tried need for speed in the lapdock and was unplayable cause the lag, is this right?
Btw i tried dungeon defender hd too and couldnt move the hero with the arrows keys, theres a way to play without use the touchpad in the screen? i think its unplayable that way since u cant touch the lapdock screen to move the hero.

I'm looking into this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093790
It seam to be a bit complicated but great id it works.
Cheers

Just got Debian/Linux running and it is awesome, truly all in one product.
Get them before they are all gone.
Cheers

My LapDock desktop
Cheers

I have the CHROOT Debian hack (search for it under development). I am also running Gnome and it includes Remmina Remote Desktop Client. I have used that to connect to my Windows Servers at work. Here is a screen shot of my desktop:

I have been toying with the idea of getting the lapdock. However after playing with it at the store several times I was disappointed with the laggy performance. Do the webtop hacks/mods help performance? How is debian on the lapdock? Linux does not need vista type system requiremens... is it worth while?
Very cool debian screenshot btw. Has me pretty excited.

The Debian environment is running along with the Motobuntu. The Debian apps seem to have better performance than the Moto apps (may just be my imagination). However, the entire experience is on par with a netbook. Of course it has greater features (i.e. the phone, gps, etc.).
For me, it is definitely worthwhile.

Have not noticed any lag, and I'm getting rid of my HP laptop and all I'm using is my Atrix phone and it's Lapdock, and I never have to search for a hotspot again to connect.
Cheers

Have you got instructions on how to do that?
Thanks

Just do the full debian hack from the thread under the development forum. Be sure to use the 4GB image.
After you get the image working, apt-get install synaptic. Then just install Gnome.
Once you have Gnome installed, run gnome-session from the linux terminal (penguin icon). You will have to removed the bottom panel and align the top panel to the left side. Of course, this step is optional but I prefer the panels not overlapping each other.

Thanks, I will try it I have come over from Hacked and unlocked iPhone and am new to this system, but it looks better.
Also if anyone is interested I have a spare Lapdock to sell. PM me.

Only if the ROM is based on an AT&T official release (4.5.91 for example) OR developed to accommodate it. CM7 B2TF release just added dock audio to its featureset, so I'm sure it is possible, just a work in progress in some cases.

Guys, what can I do to watch .mp4 videos on the phone on the laptop dock?
I'm going on a plane ride for 10 hours tomorrow and would love to watch my movies on that instead of the ipad...

Nice topic, I just recently started toying around with this stuff. I currently am using webtop2sd, I successfully installed Gnome,Gimp...etc. But I am a complete noob when it comes to Linux.
What do you guys think is better, the debian hack or webtop2sd? I know with webtop2sd, you don't need that 4 gig image taking up space. I'm not opposed to that, just for now my 32gig card bit the dust...so I'm stuck with an 8gig for now.
What size cards are you guys using, and how much space are you allocating for webtop?
Also, What rom are you using, and what webtop version. I used sam cripp's stock webtop fruitcake because all the others were giving me problems with the webtop statusbar icons.
Thanks!!

Fast Tattoo build I've found over at the vogue forums. Everything that works in the latest donut builds works in this build..including working wifi, ect, but no bluetooth.
camera needs work. No force closes, and it starts up faster than any hero ive tried. Haven't tested everything so let me know if you run into something.
This is not my work..special thanks to dzo, vilord, jamezelle, and many more still involved in the android project.

Wifi is good and fast, overall stability is very good as well. It will often reload the home screen if you don't use a swap file. Uploaded a conf file that will create one for you.

ajclai08, it's importante to say that everyone has to set the screen resolution in 320x480 at first boot, and then change to 240x320 if they want to.
Some apps that won't show in the market if you don't do that step.
PS: Some screenshots would be nice.

Good Work , Only issue it still is taking a long time to load from the drawer to the home screen and it won`t let me add Htc widgets, Is it just a issue that I am having or is just some general issues. It takes about 1-2 minutes to load home screen after going in setup or anywhere else....and have downloade the last conf (that makes a swap file)...
Cannot run
I keep getting "read only file system" and can't install this. Any suggestions?

Yes, you could do that but this build is built for qvga..not even sure it others will work.
Loading
I can get mine to load past Haret and the Android Pops up followed by the letters HTC and loud startup sound. I leave it there for 5 mins and then come back to a blank screen, 20 mins later it is still a blank screen.
I am using a Tytn II (Kaiser) Have tried this on a FAT32 formatted single partition SD with both 1GB card and 4GB card.
Any pointers in to where I should look? I was previously using a standard donut build just fine now I have replaced the files using these because I wanted to try out sense ui
Me too! Although I tried it on a Polaris, but since all of the builds for the Kaiser work on my Polaris I don't think this is the problem. Maybe, I didn't download the rootfs on this thread or the conf file. Will try now. EDIT:Yay! It worked! I downloaded the rootfs file and conf file (The one without the swap file conf) and overwrote my existing files. One problem though, no sound.
Does this even work??
Has anyone got this to actually work as described in the first post? I mean I have tried various mixes of files back and forth and now I can get as far as the Screen Calibration and sometimes to the SenseUi but its quiet slow and I get a
FORCE CLOSE com.android.phone has stopped working every few minutes.
Anyone had any better luck and if so what base files did you use as I have used new old whatever it runs into some problem or another.

My partner has a Hero and thinking of getting rid of it due to its shortcommings in the PIM Dept, but I still would like to fiddle around with Android to see the improvements..
But agree with you that this appears to be a really crap build..
Plenty of users have gotten this to run, and run well, just check the original thread. If you want the SenseUI/Hero look on our device, this is the best it gets right now. You don't need a mishmash of files, just use what's in the first post. No build is perfect, you guys should have more respect for what the developers are trying to do for you.
Looking great, enatefox! Too bad I can't dual-boot Android builds, this one is tempting to stick with!

No disrespect at all polyrhythmic...in fact when my next paycheck comes I plan on donating I'm very grateful for all the work the devs have done. I've just been so fed up with WinMo that I run android pretty much as my primary OS so stability and functionality is everythign to me. I figured I'd give the tattoo build a shot just to check out the senseUI but couldn't get it working. As it is, it seems that the Kaiser has JUST enough power to run most andoid builds, that builds with "enahnced" UI's to me would prorobly just bog down the speed and functionality of it....no matter how pretty it is....and it is

or how about a fluid video player on android, there are disadvantages to android... i've come to a few in just my 2nd day of use. Besides that, I love it. My ancient 8125 plays that video just fine, no bugs, stops, glitches, freezing like my desire does. Not really a big deal as it's not a video player for me, but like stated some apps will have to be rewritten for droid. Hopefully they're not the most used. WP7 will be a big contender I believe, M$ has the funds and ready to compete. We shall see. They will surely be getting the new qualcomm dualcore lineup i'm betting.

OP : if you want a snapdragon with WM why not a HD2?
HD2 I had borrowed for a month and they appear to me too much, with one hand can not be used
I think you should have this thread moved to Themes and Apps and search for replacements for WinMo, because I don't see a port happening in the near future.
On the other hand, I agree that android -even if it's quite modern and overall better than WinMo 6.5.3- is very immature in many ways and lacks some polished apps:
- email client
- exchange
- contact managing
- extensive weather application such as weatherpanel
- a good imdb client
- a reliable bt/wifi remote - most don't work on bt and even gmote has lots of problems on some platforms
- some other work related applications

well, I haven't said that, my point is that being winmo a lot older than android, you miss some applications which where developed over a long time and which probably will come to android, but aren't still there. The Imdb example is just to point out that even if you have 50000 apps there are some which are missing (and Imdb doesn't want official applications).
In fact if you read my post I have stressed that you should move this to themes and apps because there are some applications which are missing, not because the OS isn't good.
At the same time the email client, contact management (picture syncing issues etc) all point to the fact that android is midway between business/consumer and that it's still a bit in the working, which is completely normal.
But this is going offtopic. I just think that there is probably no way that WinMo (6 ? 7 ?) will be ported to a similar android device. And I'm of the opinion that you should just try to replace what you miss with some of the apps you find in the market.

I never said I wanted windows mobile anymore Sir, or I wouldn't have bought a desire hah. I said I enjoyed it besides the video player, you really don't have to defend the OS or device, I like it. I just would like a fluid video player that can play all my files standard fast with no freezing or stuttering. Any recommendations from the marketplace?
Did you convert to some another format with lower quality as well right? The 4 i've players used so far either don't recognize or will play with stuttering, ones i've used so far wouldn't even play my standard entourage rips, which aren't very high quality as is.

There's nothing generally wrong with any of the 3rd party players so long as they stick to natively supported codecs. In the case of video, this is really just H264 (see here).
I rather suspect that the DivX support in Samsung and LG phones rely on an actual native application and/or libraries rather than an interpreted java application.

Digital Tv Tuner?

Anyone know if this is possible?
Basically I want to watch live tv on my xoom. I want to pull the signal straight from the airwaves and not use 3g or wifi etc. Anyone know any device that would do this for me? Basically something I could just plug-in and be able to watch live tv?
First, you'll need a tuner (mini PCI-E or USB) Then you'll need drivers to use that tuner, possible that a major tuner mfg could write them but then Google or a dev will need to build them into a distro. Finally, you need an app that can interpret the data received from the tuner.
The likelihood of all of these things coming together is unlikely due to the small market for such a tuner. I, personally, would love it.
TV on Xoom
I realize this is not the config you are looking for, but I purchased a DVR like box called a Vulkano made by Monsoon and basically it goes between your TV and the Cable box (and to your router). It then provides a feed to an app for android (free and/or paid) and tt literally controls your cable box remotely, and you can watch live TV, your saved shows, setup recordings, record to your device, etc.
I've tested on my Evo, Xoom, and A7, which all work.
However, the recent update to 3.1 caused the Xoom version to not work anymore, but the developers said a fix is coming soon.
While I was on 3.0 the HD channels on the Xoom were F-ing sweet!
The box was about $150, but there are multiple versions, and I bought this on a whim hoping it would just do DVR type functions, but went well beyond that.
I've run it over wifi, 3g, and tethered to 3g, and all have worked very well.
Again, maybe not the config you want, but this is nothing short of AWESOME!!
isnt that kind of like "slingbox" and how did you get it to work with 3g?
TV on Xoom
Pretty much exactly like Slingbox (I think, never used it), just cheaper and they have a free App for Android and Apple. There's a paid App version, but didn't bother since the freebie worked good for me. I use it on my Evo and eLocity A7 all the time via 3g and/or Tether. And until the HC 3.1 update I was able to use it on my Xoom via 3g. If you get a good signal or go wifi it will stream in HD, and looks killer on the Xoom. But alas, the developer needs to update it for HC 3.1, impatiently waiting for that!
Also I found that if you record thru the App, it stores it locally on whatever device you are using. I often use it on my PC, and then save it to my NAS drive for remote access later.
Like I said before, I was trying this out as a maybe option, and was totally stoked at what I got for $150, I think the slingbox doesn't quite do all this, and costs like twice as much for the Pro, and you still have to pay $25 for their App.
There is also 6 versions of the hardware to fit your budget and needs.
here you go, pick a channel and watch.

nice find. Not exactly what I was looking for.
I am looking for a dtv tuner that connects to the xoom. If anyone figures this out please post.
They had talked about a version of the Samsung Moment that would do this, not sure if it ever came state side or not. But that could take care of the tuner software side, then you would need a device and a driver, I remember having a winTV device at one point in time that worked in ubuntu with out any extra work...so there's definitely linux support for the type of device.

hey if there is any developers out there .. could you possibly try to get this to work for Xoom? I use to have an archos, and I was able to put live t.v on it .. but the system was modified for it, using URUKDROID.. I'm just wondering if we can just extract the drivers and use the T.V app that comes with this installation???

Honestly, i couldn't be more impressed with this app. Not only does it use no data since it goes through your wifi network, it transfers insanely fast. I transferred a 200MB wmv file in under a minute. like most of you i have had some MTP issues where things have transferred very slowly, and this was much faster.
Additionally, where as MTP will sometimes load no thumbnails of your images making it very difficult to find which one your looking for, airdroid loads them all.
it also allows you to access your contacts, sms (and even send sms!), as well as full access to the entire internal memory. You can even see all of your installed applications as well as uninstall them (requires confirmation from the phone).
honestly, i'm incredibly impressed with airdroid, and considering it's free, even more so.
just figured since i've found this app so incredibly useful, i thought it would be best to spread it around here.
i'm not the developer or anything like that, i just found it and loved it. don't think i'll ever connect my phone to the computer again.
Thanks! Nice new tool,appreciate it

Only issue (not sure if it's universal) is that WiFi transfers do not work with the screen off for me, but beyond that, its great for quickly dropping in files to the phone. Great browser interface for the most part as well.
@nweaver: considering i'm posting this in the galaxy nexus forum, and i say i have a galaxy nexus, and the galaxy nexus can only run android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, then yes, i'm on ICS.
And yes they say they have problems with ICS, i haven't noticed any. And if you look at the reviews for the galaxy nexus then they're almost all 5 stars.
@Jebus: strange that transfers don't work with the screen off, they work just fine for me. transferred pictures and videos with the screen off. I noticed in the battery that while it's running it keeps the phone awake, for obvious reasons, it's possible that your rom or some app is interfering with it, and stopping it from having the phone awake even though the screen is off.
*edit* Oh yeah 1000 posts!
This looks great. Gonna download it and have a play. Wasn't too impressed with MTP so hopefully this is an adequate replacement. Accessing contacts and texting etc. is a nice extra perk too!
Just one bug so far...
The only bug I've found so far is that I fail to receive the new sms text notification on the web interface and that I have to manually refresh the conversation window - I'm using Chrome. Anyone else have this problem?
Other than that it's a great app - can't believe I didn't come across this sooner!
How is this AirDroid different from MyPhoneExplorer? Not beeing sarcastic just asking a legitimate question.

after looking around, airdroid looks a lot nicer, and runs in the browser instead of a separate app. aside from that they're very similar but myphoneexplorer has some more features for syncing and other things.
personally, airdroid is better for file management because of the simple windowed design, and full working thumbnails, and that it works right from your browser, so no extra application to install. aside from that, MPE is better in a few ways. i think it'll come down to your preference and what you need.
personally i'm using this for moving pictures and other files too and from the device since i can actually see thumbnails through this and not through MTP.
I was not aware that such things existed. My compliments to the chef!
I'm also a big fan of this app. A little slower than USB but much easier, especially in Linux. Two things I'd like to see though: Downloaded files, are in a generically named zip file, it would be nice for them to at least have an appropriate name. The other thing that would be nice is a Chrome and Firefox extension to automatically connect, so we don't have to type in a different address every time.
I was having major problems with MTP and downloaded this on my first night with my Gnex.
Amazing and saved me from much frustration. Awesome app!
Cant get airplay to work at all
just says waiting ... tried in IE and Chrome.
@wilbur-force: don't forget to activate it in the phone first. and it works perfectly in firefox.
It runs like a champ in chrome for me
Nook Color ICS Alpha for CM9 & AirDroid
My Dell Studio Win7 64 laptop has not been able to succeed in loading MTP or PTP drivers for my Nook Color ICS Alpha for CM9 from XDA. I was having to pull the SD card to transfer CM9 update zips to my NC. AirDroid saved the day (week).
Thank you!
Also loving this app.
The only thing that bugs me is (and maybe I am doing it wrong?) that when I upload for example a picture to my wallpaper folder on the phone Airdroid creates its own "wallpaper" folder for only the files I just uploaded instead of dropping the uploads into my already existing "wallpaper" folder that I initially selected as the upload destination.
So when I go into the gallery (stock) on my phone later on I have two folders named "wallpaper"
Anyone else running into this?
My "wallpaper" folder is a subfolder of my "pictures" folder on the root directory of the phone.
thanks ill give it a go
I use Websharing. It is a paid app, but let you use webdav protocol. (I can access phone storage as a network share).
Also, I can stop the service. Airdroid 1.0.6 removed this option. Waiting a fix to start using it to decide between webshare and airdroid.
i personally use it on my mac and it's very useful and save my a lot of time.

Using the Galaxy Nexus as a home theater/desktop PC

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_--zcmqIyRI
Not thinking "ground breaking" or anything, but very nice stuff none the less.
I had an Atrix 4G with the Lapdock accessory (+webtop mod) before the GNEX, so using my android phone as my computer is something i'm familiar with, even though it was in a different way.
I also have the Rii mini bluetooth keyboard and tried once with the Nexus connected to my TV. Just that one time because I received the MHL adapter very recently.

It did not play nice. I'll test it again soon and post an update.
But until then..
Any other Nexus owners here using their phone as a desktop PC/HTPC/entertainment center?
Any recommended full sized bluetooth keyboard+touchpad?
Thanks
I just use a Bluetooth mouse and a cheap bt thumb keyboard off eBay with a good layout for direction keys. I don't have an MHL adapter yet but it should work. I think your issue is your keyboard\mouse combo may be too complicated without some software.
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus - CM9 AOKP
Asus Transformer - Revolver
Something else I've tried is installing ubuntu in a chroot, accessing it through VNC, and using bluetooth mouse+keyboard with MHL output. Results are shaky at best. VNC is the bottleneck - none of the VNC clients I've tried really work perfectly.
Some typical issues:
- Double-clicking doesn't work
- Keys are not always mapped properly. Escape, Tab, Ctrl, Alt, for example.
- Audio doesn't work at all.
- Because it's through VNC, graphics are not hardware accelerated.
The efficiency of using a full linux install with a keyboard is lost when the keyboard doesn't function as expected.
Looks promising. I would like to see desktop programs like spreadsheets, real time financial apps, or maybe sending something to the printer.
I did. No add ons. Everything was from the GN and the MHL adapter with the back cover off.

this part is easy using Google Cloud Print.
I used it before and it works flawlessly.

This is such a cool idea. When I scrape up a few extra bucks I am definitely going to have to try this at home.

I'm using my SGN as a terminal to access my citrix desktop at work. I used to carry around a netbook for this but now, with my SGN resolution and with the help of a bluetooth keyboard the need for my netbook is gone .
As a bluetooth keyboard I'm using a slightly larger one (compared with Rii you're using): http://www.serioux.com/products/keyboards/srx-prc82
This may be a stupid question but ... How did you have the screen turned on landscape mode?

It's rotated to landscape by default after connecting to TV via MHL.

Where do you buy this thing? No issues?
I could see this being practical for basic needs word processing etc. But any photo/video editing will be out of the question for some time..

I dont plan on using mine as a desktop computer but for my galaxy tab 10.1 I have this bluetooth keyboard from logitech that sync'd perfectly and works well with the nexus also.
It is, I would say, about the size of a laptop keyboard so you can get a good rhythm going once you get comfortable with the keys and the size of the keyboard.
As for mouse, I have no idea. I have this cheap one from that is bluetooth form logitech also but I dont like using it. But in a pinch its better than nothing.
Where did you purchase the serioux keyboard?
I bought the serious from a local store (I found it by chance .. I was not looking for it on purpose). I see that lots of online stores here in Romania have this keyboard in stock ....
If you want to make an idea about the size, compared with a full sized keyboard....

I have a google t.v. Keyboard Which I thought would work but its not discoverable by default so I will have to buy a bt keyboard and mouse. MHL is nice though its great that this can be done.
I have been using this setup off an on for a few weeks now. I actually had an Apple keyboard and mouse sitting around the house and they paired with the device perfectly.
I also did the Ubuntu install and you are absolutely right... VNC is the bottle neck and it makes everything unusable.
While its fun to toy around with, it is still too clunky of a setup for me to make it my permanent laptop replacement. If I could get the output on the monitor to be a tablet layout instead of a close up of the phone screen, it may be a different story.
My GN has basically become my multimedia hub/ desktop. I used the Samsung mhl adapter to avoid some problems I heard about with other adapters. I use the Logitech bt Android 3.0+ keyboard mouse combo. Got these on Amazon.
On my TV I use Gmail, Calendar, GDocs, Netflix, Music, Weather, Market Movies, etc... I love it.
And even use Google Video Chat off the back camera using the keyboard case stand!
