[KERNEL]Netarchy Nexus for NS + NS4G - Nexus S 4G Android Development

Hmmm... thanks for posting this but I'm not sure how long this will stay up. It may be better and safer to split it into two posts eliminating a chance for someone flashing the wrong kernel.
However, your choice

Where it says "Nexus-S Non-Sprint Phones Only" flashing that one might cause issues.

Naw, worst thing would be it won't boot. It probably wouldn't even do that, person just wouldn't have service.

(Original thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091382)

I'm glad to see a small thread regarding this kernel. I'm thinking of flashing this mainly to get the BLN lights for notifications. I started reading the 300 plus threads and gave up, used to reading and research but wow!!
I'm used to flashing, came from Epic and loved Odin. However, with the Nexus, I tried to unlock bootloader, used GSM unknowingly, and got brick. Took me 2 days as early adopter to figure out how to fix (found Samsung Simple DL720 and Odin),
fixed and finally unlocked and rooted. But now hesitant to load since many Nexus
items are not referenced well.
Thank goodness yours is, so my quesions are - should I use cf for better battery?
I am stock, will stay stock for now, so if I want to revert, can I use cwm with backup to go back if there are problems?
I'm also hesitating to flash roms, haven't seen anything from anyone I'm familiar with - loved ACS team and pfmedic - their development, help and response was outstanding, so when they develop, I will go there. So if and when that happens,
would I then flash the kernel for non-standard phones?
Thanks for the advice, the unlock mess just stressed me out - and I did find out it truly voids warranty at my Service Center - they blackballed me, so I cancelled insurance on all phones since I can hack/fix any of the other Androids we have. This is just new and I'm on learning curve.

Welcome to the nexus bandwagon. The current set up I have is kushdecks rom(its basically cm7 with gingerbread launcher) netarchys cfs 1.3.0 kernel. You will also need to flash Google apps. It is very stable, fast, good battery life, you can use cm7 themes and overclock. But if you want something light and stable try open soju it comes with zeal launcher and netarchys kernel out of the box. Good luck.

Welcome you can also install cm7 nemiths thread and get your feet wet.you'll love the phone

this is why I want to try the kernel first. My phone is running fantastic. Actually getting almost 2 days on battery, unlocked, rooted. So in that case, I am hesitant to change anything, really just trying to get the bln for notifications working. I read some get better battery life, so this would be g great, hers not so.
If I flash, not good for me, how do I get backck to stock? Any file for stock kernel I need that I can Odin like modems on epic? Go back from backup? I really don't want to go back with the Samsung binaries and have to re root, I didn't do well wit h fastboot.
I also like pure gb and want to see what updates come thru, especially for/ the radio.
Will kernel change let these come thru? I always hacked and used rams before that had updates, so not sure on this

That is the easiest way to get back to stock. I dropped my two week old phone and used that and fastboot oem lock to get it completely back to stock. It took longer to download the file then it did to return the phone to stock.
2 days on battery?! Are you not using it? I was getting 20 hours with the phone stock for the one day I left it unrooted and I get the same with Nets kernel and CM7.

I go up and down in usage, just got a new Asus Transformer so playing with it for online things, down to using Nexus for phone, messaging (3 kids so use it), and checking email. But at night, having close to 50% left in good service area.
On weekends, we are at end of service, so using Roam Control with still poor service, maybe 2 bars, 1x, and still have 30% left. My Epic (without R.C.) didn't make it. So I am considering this excellent, best phone I have ever had running, and have never left a phone stock for these reasons!!
That is why I am hesitant to do anything to it. I always want to try things, then have to spend time tweaking, fixing, or removing what doesn't work good. I just do not like fastboot, not comfortable enough to like using it, so don't want to go there when my main purpose is to be BLN and keep or improve battery. Also my stock Nexus beats my old Epic on ACS, pfmidnight on speed and service, unbelievable.
If I make a backup of current, flash kernel, it acts up, can't I just use backup to go back to stock or do I have to reflash something else?

Yes, you can root the phone and install a custom recovery and make a nand backup. You can always revert to that if the new kernel isn't what you like.

Thank you, and pushed the button. I am unlocked, rooted, backed up and stock. I don't want to use fastboot to erase everything, nor Odin with Samsung Simple DL;720 (that was my lifesaver) just to change back from kernel.
Like I said, once I was rooted and running on Epic and earlier phones, no looking back because I would do anything to get rid of Sprint's timeframes, crap, speed, etc.
But loving Google and want to keep OTA's coming for awhile since I haven't seen any roms I'm crazy about.
So will flash kernel and see what happens. Just can't live with any worse battery, and sometimes shouldn't try to fix what isn't broken, but want the blinking led buttons bad enough to change.

You can try different roms and nand back as well. I'm running CM7, wouldn't run anything else. 90% of the roms out there are based off of it anyway.

I'm going to try it today while on drive, see what happens for the weekend. As long as battery doesn't tank, I will be happy especially know I can simply use backup to revert
As far as roms go, I have always stuck with certain developers due to trust and service - we all know what problems arise with roms, and the newer they are the more little things need tweaked. Therefore, being unfamiliar with any of the developers, I'm not changing anything. I have never looked into cm7, know they are an excellent, excellent team, but they developed for phones I have never carried, so when I see things like nightlies, I do not want to maintain and fix, I
just stay away!!

To each their own but there is no maintaining, it's a stable rom.

fordmanck,
I did install the kernel for the weekend, actually used more battery than stock, and this was at vacation home, edge of service, which was unexpected but where I wanted to test since service for me is the most crucial (meaning I have run out of bars and batteries too many times to count).
Also, the primary reason for conversion was to use BLN for notifications. It did not work on my phone, no idea why, so going back to stock for now. I am actually shocked at the battery I get, best on any phone ever, and yes, I use it.
Did look into cm7 roms, I know I will play and do this, I'm just tired of being early adopter and dealing, meaning maintaining, with issues. That is where many of the Nexus S 4g's are. I couldn't find a cm7 rom, when I tapped Nexus s 4g, gave a lot
of choices. I do not want to use nightlies, but only a stable one, so when I find one, will give it a shot.
Thanks for your help, I used backup and am where I was before trying the kernel.

[SPRINT][Rom+Kernel] Sprint EF17 GB Better Than Life Future Echos V2.0 UPDATE 8-30

UPDATE 8-30-11 @ 0900 CST
Dev update 8-30
general update for all projects
Ok guys, guess who's semi-back
short story long....
Left arm-much better now
Right arm....whoa, real bad, can hardly move it.
Projects im going to cover and then paste in all my threads..
Pardon any grammar issues, spacebar is all fubar on the laptop
Roms,
VZW & Sprint GB 2.3.4
MIUI
CM7
Kernels,
VZW & Sprint
First the Kernels.......
I started back to work on the kernels saturday. Trying a few things here and there, got some boot ups, got some boot loops. of course the goal is and always will be 100% CWM, EXT4 with auto convert, 3G and of course a seperate kernel for Sprint and Verizon. I ammaking progress. Soon i hope.
I have compiled a few test kernels, was testing on my "dev" tab (its a verizon model that has no 3G) when i bricked it, hardbrick. was my fault, should haveknown better, so I started using my daily driver tab that has 3G, I am down to just the one tab now, which sucks because I use the tab for pretty much all forms of typing based communication, gtalk, texting, email as its easier on my hands than the phone or the pc keyboard, even still i need a larger tab like the xoom, or other 10" tab so i can reduce hand cramping when using it.
Roms,
As far as the roms are concerned, im going to pull Version 2.0 links, put Version 1.0 links back up, to many issues with 2.0 and the theme i think.
Future builds will now be as stripped down, themeless, with a basic launcher, no bells and whistles. I will be releasing as close to a non TW as I can until done with CM7 so I can use that for the base. Ill explain more as that time gets closer.
For now, I recommend using 1.0 on both Sprint and Verizon, and if you need 3G stick with the factory kernel and recovery, if you use the tab for wifi only, and do want CWM+ext4, then there is the perfect kernel avaliable now, ill post the links to stock, and custom kernels.
MIUI/CM7
MIUI, yeah I havethe build released, yes i did work on it a bitmore before my right arm went on strike, yes I will continue, i kinda liked it. But for it to really work 100% I need to finish CM7
CM7.
CM7, the one everyone is waiting for, the build I need to go to more advanced builds for other roms, the base I need for as AOSP as we are going to get, the base I need for MIUI, Oxygen, AOSP, Honeycomb, etc
Im now focusing 100% on CM7, starting almost from scratch, I nuked my dev machine and started fresh in hopes that any issues i may have been experiencing were due to a botched setup. best way to find out, nuke and re-install all dev tools. I am tooling up and syncing CM7 today.
Honeycomb.
Yes, I said it.
I am and will be picking up where Spacemoose left off with Honeycomb. First thing i will release will be a re-release of his v2.5, however I will be including the Audio and BTHID fixes I did for him back then that never made it to a release. Those fixes take care of the ability to use headphones, or exterior speakers and allowing you to plug in and unplug and it switches from headphones to internal speakers, and the audio sounds wicked effing good to, i was shocked. it was these 2 fixes i did that got me into developing, and the first of any dev work i did. BTHID, cant tell you how well it works, maybe im a jerk, but i see no point in mouse/keyboard on a touch screen device small enough to hold, and i dont have BT mouse/keyboard anyway.
Version 3.0, or 2.9, whatever, its the 3G version. I have it, have always had it, supposidly the 3G works, is recognized, however upon booting the damn phone app force closes so much the actual system is almost impossibleto use, or test the 3G, that will be a side project.
Physical abilities,
Well so some of yall understand what is going on with me,because all i do is mention arm pain, ill explain...
Last year I was hurt at work. I fractured a vertibre, and my disc's L1-L5 vary from split, hemmoraged, herniated, and even one has a piece that broke off.
Itsucks sitting because I have 2 nerve bundles that are pinched, so my legs go numb, and it also hurts to sit. alot of the time any period longer than 10 minutes results in both legs going fully numb, and i cant stand on my own for 20 minutes following, kinda funny sometimes cause if that happens i start to look like david hasselhoff trying to get a burger....
Also, this goes for both arms...
Both inner and outer joints in elbows damaged. Tendon damaged and seperated in elbows and forearms, nerve damage that can only be described as pure suck is also known as full on carpal tunnel in both wrists, have 40% sense of feeling in all fingers, pinky, ring, middle and thumb are constantly numb, tingle, and hurt. Left elbow feels a bitbetter now, right arm, i cant even support the weight of my tablet in any way shape or form, arm has a brace from shoulder to fingers, and in a sling that keeps it to my chest to keep from moving anyway. sucks, but you make adjustmentsin life.
So, i got help from my wife, and friends to make a desk i can stand at, and a platform that raises my mouse and keyboard up and almost to my neck so i can use the mouse as i am a righty. I have been taken off work since december, and probably will either not be able to go back to janruary, or...at all if these nutbag dr's cant fix me and im labeled disabled for life. I no longer stress out over this, and just keep moving forward.
So it gives me all day and night 7 days a week to work at a computer if i can pending the pain in arm is not bad enough, standing actually feels much better for my back. I watch my 2 kids all day while i make my wife go to work ( lol ) and feel like Mr. Mom sometimes, my 4 year old daughter helps so much, its gotten to the point where its actually fun trying to teach her how to do things to help me, she knows how to use the macbook, and calls it the "Apple" without me ever telling her it is an apple, she obviously knows what an apple symbol is....duh.
Wife supports me spending all evening and weekends on pc, knowing i like doing this, so the ability to do this is there. I wont lie, going from a nice income to almost nothing sucks, put us behind, and yes I will end up selling anything needed to make sure my kids have a house, food, electricity before i have a tab, multiple tabs, computer, woodshop, etc. They are above and beyond way more important than anything else inmy life, so dont feel sorry for me, it's the responsible thing to do, and if it ever gets to the point where i have to ditch the remaining tab, then i will upload all work, source, material, etc, and create a writeup for all projects for someone else to pick up. that way yall aint left hanging without a CDMA developer anymore.
Now this is the most important thing of all.....
I am not doing this for the donations, or for the income, etc. I do this because i enjoy it, i have the time to do it, and it keeps me occupied during the day and its fun. Nothing i mentioned above is to gain a pity party, **** happens, and there are people out there who have it worse than i do financially, physically, etc.
So, if you feel the absoloute need to get in touch with me, my gtalk is the same as my username here. same for email. I am bad about getting back to people because i reserve typing for dev work, it does suck trying to type, i am more of a phone person, i wear a headset, its easier on my in alot of ways. I'm sorry but i can not give any type of tech support via gtalk right now, it would eat up an entire day to just troubleshoot 1 tab and it's unique issues, sorry but i cant, got some pointers on building kernels, stuff like that, feel free to jump in.
So, there you go, a well rounded and long ass update posted in every one of my threads, lol, just to drive people nuts i suppose. Next update should be with new projects.
Jim

Version 2.0 of Future Echos
Changelog
Created and built TouchBlur theme.
New TouchWiz 4.5 with rotation fix and extras
Details
Ok, Only issues I was aware of, no rotation in TW, long press on screen, the bland look of Samsung's Tab, and of course 3G with the custom Kernel.
Call it a port of Moto Blur, dont call it a port of Moto Blur, however you can call it not finished. Ver 3 will see other apps matching the rest of the rom
TouchWiz Launcher
There are so many version of TW4, and 4.5 out there for anyone to grab, i hope nobody thought i pulled some rabbit out of a hat, yes i spent the time to make sure it would work, and 2 out of the 11 versions i tried worked. I released one of those versions in V1 of the build.
I have reached out to both Devs on those projects, one of them is abondonedware that I have taken over for future releases, the other one I asked the Dev if i could strip out his build and include it in my second release, as well as theme it as i have, and he gave me the blessing to do that.
What Works in TW 4.5
Long press on home screen
Rotation (enable in settings, reboot tab)
Themed, and left Original Dev's Donate link in settings
I use Smart Keyboard Pro with HTC theme. I wont include as it is a paid app in the market.

First, get Heimdall 1.1.1 Why? Because thats what I use, if you choose to use a different version, I can not provide support.
I use 1.1.1 because it works, I've always used it, i see no point in upgrading something that is not broken.
Heimdall 1.1.1 Windows
Heimdall 1.1.1 OSX
There are 32 and 64 bit versions for Linux.
You will lose all of your data and apps, it is a requirement to wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. Any deviations will result in a non working system.
Unzip package.
Open Heimdall
Put Tab into download mode
Place Filesystem in the filesystem
Place zimage in kernel
Place zimage in recovery
IMMEDIATELY upon first boot!!! force tab into recovery.
WIPE DATA
WIPE CACHE
REBOOT
This method has worked on many tabs over the past week. These are the methods and tools I use.
If you do not wipe data and cache, you will boot loop.
Even if you do not bootloop, i doubt Touchwiz will run.
Touchwiz.....
press menu and go to preferences.
Select Homescreen Settings
Check "Landscape Mode"
Reboot Tab
You now have rotation.
The Donate button in the TouchWiz settings, is for the original Dev is built the app. I did not remove his Donate button. If you wish to donate to me, use the link in my post, if you wish to donate to him, use the donate button in the app.
The Rom has 3G data access
The Rom does not have a custom Kernel and recovery yet.
You can not flash any other kernels from any other devs unless it is for your tab, ie: Sprint kernel for Sprint Tab, Verizon Kernel for Verizon Tab.
Spacemoose and I are working on a 3G enabled Kernel.
Have fun, enjoy, see ya for V3.0

Changelog and Updates
Update 8-7-11
Uploading new Sprint only build right now. I have no way to test the 3G ability, however I am sure ya'll be nice enough to let me know if it works.
From now on, I will work on what I am calling "the twins" the Sprint and Verizon Version together at same time, Both Carriers will recieve IDENTICAL builds now.
Enjoy.

hope surgery goes well man, and thank you for everything
there are scripts floating around that will convert back and forth between rfs and ext4.. so those might help in the process if the CWM install doesn't automatically do it.
I hope all goes really well with your surgery. Us CDMA folks have been waiting forever and a day, but it will not hurt us any more than your constant pain is, so handle your stuff First. We can wait longer, no big deal.

I am.......effing tore up right now, ****.
But, ......but......however.......so........it..... lol
I am going to pop a few dozen pain pils, and get to work today. I want this damn kernel released tonight. I am so kernel out tonight.
Spacemoose built the first one, i compiled the second one after pulling the ext4 module out, still wont boot a rom on my tab, however, that poor tab, so abused, i am shocked it boots at all.
Ill get with Dan when he wakes up, try a few things with his help, maybe get a basic kernel with recovery only released, and worry about the bells and whistles next week.
Damn, my **** is killing me, but i cant sit around and keep a forum full of half ass ****, gotta wrap up Psirens, release Cassandra, release this kernel, so i can get back to the CM7 i started. The surgery taxed my bank account today, damn co-pay, ****.
I tried pulling a Vanilla Sky, but the Dr's wouldn't let me sing. lol
Dude, seriously. It's all good, they're just ROMs. Put down the SDK and rest. Our need for your work is less than your need to focus on your health.

Convince me to root!

So far I have zero complaints about this phone, there are some ui things I would like fixed, and I know can be fixed via rooting, but they just don't seem to be enough to push me over the edge. I have files downloaded and ready to go, but just can't seem to take the plunge. I thought I had my first los today, but the phone recovered as soon as I was back in signal(if it hadn't that would have done it).
So why should I root?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
You can always revert back to the stock kernel if you have an issue (or have them that frequently that you can't stand it). Anybody who thinks that once you root there is no way to go back is an idiot. "lol, I got no LOS then I rooted and even though I put stock kernel back its all [email protected] lol" not true.
I got 2 LOS in the first week stock...rooted...got a bit more than usual, but nothing crazy. Flashed stock kernel back, still rooted, didn't have another for a few weeks until I flashed a new kernel...flashed back, have had none...etc etc etc, YMMV, but, umm, I don't think you have anything to be afraid of. Just know what you are doing...don't just flash stuff and figure it out later. Know why you want something and how to 'put it back'...also having/making a USB jig would be a good idea, but not necessary.
You can get them for like $3 on amazon or build one with a microUSB cable and $1 worth of stuff from radioshack.
I don't know about you but I certainly didn't get this phone to NOT mod it.
I didn't get the phone to keep it stock, not really worried about los, it recovers after flying for 2 hours with no signal, rooting shouldn't make much difference., planning on using viperom and lostkernel.
Maybe tomorrow I will root

The only thing I can tell you is that read the directions and understand ODIN for all of the ODIN stuff you do. That is one of the ways you can brick the fnck out of this phone...not paying attention in ODIN. Don't write a partition if you are not told to...and try to only use it to flash a kernel+CWM and flash everything else from CWM if and when possible.
If you aren't worried about LOS (and it is real and under the right circumstances it'll effect every phone...reboot...no big deal...if it is flash a pulled stock kernel) then go for it.
I haven't tried ViperROM on this phone yet, but, I can tell you from my time with the E3D that kid knows what he's doin'....I'm sure this ROM is no different and I've heard nothing but great things about the LoST kernel.
If you don't want to root, don't. Why would anyone want to pressure you?

I don't understand why some people view this almost like losing their virginity, trying a drug or robbing a liquor store. It's a very well understood technical process with very specific pros and cons that are also very well understood.
Yep. First android phone for me, and I bought it with the full intention of making it MY phone. After all, they are basically an additional limb for most people, no? (I'd say if you're registered with xda that is most likely the case! ) So you might as well go balls to the walls, right? If you're not into that kind of thing, then keep it stock! This phone is AMAZING just sitting at the home screen...it looks awesome! It is a great piece of technology, with plenty of great features and capability, and will serve you very well whether its rooted or not. Good luck with whatever you do!

OP if you are on EG30 baseband could you extract the modem.bin file for us so we could test it?
I would just stay stock. Honestly, no offense to the developers, but there is just nothing substantial out there. If you want a couple of different themes, you could consider rooting, but other than that every ROM I have flashed provided close to nothing really.
I mean, what? Battery percentage mod? Removed CIQ? "Speed" tweaks? A reboot option?
Nothing made this phone faster or more efficient than stock touchWiz. There is no real difference except that people like to flash, so they would flash anything.
Sorry. That's just my take on it.
Wait for MIUI or CM.
I gotta say i miss root, I was finicky on rooting my epic 4g ad once I did, oooh lord I never looked back , of course I've stumbled into troubles but following directions, I got back on track and learned a few this gs along the way, now what's stopping me on rooting the ET4G is not having the actual way to go back to full true stock, like we were able to do on the epic 4g with using Odin, giving you a factory full stock phone , or any older device, since we don't have true stock roms and kernels, unless I'm wrong g of course and I've been missing out! If so direct me!

We have stock roms to ODIN, but it's not factory stock. We have the factory stock kernel that was pulled from a stock phone. What we lack is an OEM RUU to make it 100%-in-every-way-stock.
That said, I have trashed my 4G and wifi somehow on multiple occasions due to rampant recklessness on my part. I just factory-wiped (apparently...I don't remember that part but I must have) and flashed the ODIN rooted stock (with stock kernel) and it fixes everything every time.

So then you recommend rooting this early?
i rooted so i could have wifi tethering and control over CPU speeds (via setcpu) in addition, there's some neat functionality that starburst ROM allows:
- better lock screens
- motion controlled silencing of phone
- battery % viewing
some people care about the speed tweaks (i haven't noticed any speed increase) and ciq (i don't really care for this), but there are several reasons to root. that being said, if you don't need the additional functionality of the phone, then preserve your phone's warranty!
Yea I'd say stay stock in terms of the ROM and kernel, but hell yea why not root? Right now I'm running stock kernel with CWM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305099) and the stock ROM with root and busybox (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282415) and I love it. I was running Midnight ROM but I went back to stock to see if that helped the LoS issues at all. If you're like me and really just want control over the hotspot feature and CPU underclocking (things of that nature) then def go stock rooted fo shoski.

Well after finally rooting and installing a rom...

I actually received a loss of service, which I have never EVER experienced when on stock. I was on ViperROM with that kernel thats supposed to HELP the LOS issue. So no matter what any of you say now in the threads (As there seems to be back and fourth about this) I believe that the rooting...the custom roms...and or the kernels HAVE to have something to do with it. i was stock until about 2 days ago with no LOS and now ive had one. Pretty much confirms for me.

You think that Sprint would admit to a problem that is actually the fault of hackers screwing with their phone? Come on man.
I had LOS 3 times the first day I had this phone... it wasn't rooted until day 4.
I trust developers on this site that clearly have stated LOS is not caused by rooting
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...bug-on-some-devices-and-sprint-is-not-amused/
It is more than likely that, because the LOS issue lies in both the modem and kernel, changing either one of those can cause the problem to be exacerbated and that's why you are having this issue now, and not before.

I believe it mostly has to do with the source the developers used. Stock kernels are fine but the crappy source Sammy gave is not why is the stock kernel on the phone. I believe that is what is causing it.

I dont see anywhere that sprint has admited to anything 0_o (surely not that link with a screenshot of some forums post). but anyway, I SAID , root or custom roms or kernels meaning i think it MUST have something to do with being NON stock. there was no reason for you to hone in on root.
Non-Stock -- maybe ... Root doesn't seem to make a difference though. I'm still on stock rom but with root. I have never had LOS. It's the main reason I haven't switched to one of the awesome looking roms that are out there. Above all, I need the phone to work to make calls.
I hope whatever it is, it's fixed in the update!

Also to be "non-stock" you have to have been rooted/custom binary... so...yeah...
OP, flash the stock pulled kernel and rejoice. It will be no more a problem than when you were stock. Even if you get LOS occasionally still.... It will be no more than if you hadn't rooted.
I got them before rooting, kernels built from samsungs source are just far more prone. Period.

My E4GT is completely stock (never rooted or flashed) and I had HORRIBLE LoS issues early on. I was dropping signal once every hour or two. I called Sprint CS and they had me clear my data profile and re-update it. Been over a week since clearing/updating my profile and no LoS since.
So based on my experience, it has nothing to do with root or ROM.
You're never going to be able to convince the vocal crowd here on XDA of the obvious fact that being on a non-stock kernel has something to do with getting LOS.
There are hundreds of people with the exact same experience as you, go to custom kernel = LOS, stock kernel = no LOS. This has done nothing to convince these people.
It's made much worse by the fact that XDA is overrun by newbs these days. I've seen people saying they get LOS on stock kernel, and then I ask them what the symptoms are and they just say they get no bars on the signal, which sucks and all but is completely different from the circle with a slash through it custom kernel LOS. Then, the mob here points at the person's post and says, look even stock kernel gets LOS.
I've given up trying to argue with them.

As I have said before this is not just on this phone. The Photon 4G is seeing this issue as well. And the info you just mentioned was passed on to the Motorola Photon forum by me last week and a few Photon owners have done the clear and update and ran two days without reboot/radio lockup. I left the Photon due to this very issue that occurred on my Photon two to ten times a day.
Also I am on the Touch now and rooted using the odex with stock kernel and only one LOS the first day I rooted over 4 days ago. So I am pretty happy that is has not occurred anymore then that.
Ditto here. Stock since day 1 without a single LOS, rooted the other day and got a LOS circle with a line through it, within 5 hours. These are just observations. That's on the LoS kernel, which I love otherwise. Battery life seems to be better.

Um, that was exactly the symptom I got. I even described it right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18573252&postcount=39
A circle with at line thru it instead of strength bars and my lock screen said "Searching for signal..."
I'm only trying to share my experience in the hopes that someone can find the cause. People are saying they see it when they root/flash, and I'm saying I've see it even tho I've never done either. I don't understand what's with the hostility here.

No, it's more appropriate to say that you're never going to convince people that WANT to believe something that it's wrong...even if developers and Sprint themselves have clearly stated it's not true.
I experienced LOS before rooting.
andygallo experienced it before rooting.
My brother experiences LOS and is unrooted/stock.
9000 others have experienced LOS with a completely stock phone.
Developers have clearly stated it's a problem with the kernel/modem firmware and not caused by rooting or custom binaries.
Sprint has acknowledged that they, and Samsung, are aware of the issue and are working on it and have clearly stated that it has nothing to do with rooting/custom kernel/ROMs.
What more do you people need?
I don't know why it's so important for you guys to keep trying to peddle the debunked idea that it's rooting or something related.
It has nothing to do with rooting or custom ROMs/Kernels.
Yeah I don't really know how people can refute that it seems to have a lot to do with rooting/kernels/etc.
I had the phone for 2 weeks stock, not a single LOS. Rooted it, had one within a half hour, and one every hour on the dot for the 3 days after I rooted trying every conceivable rom selection/kernel choice.
I then went back to stock and haven't had a single LOS since.
I guess all are different, but there seems to be quite the correlation to me with rooting and getting the LOS.
My 2 cents

I can refute it because it happened on my completely stock (never rooted or flashed) phone. I believe you when you say that you saw it after you rooted, so I don't understand why you refute my observations (or anyone elses for that matter)?
I'm not saying that rooting/flashing doesn't bring about this issue, I'm just not convinced that it is THE cause. Rooting/flashing might just TRIGGER the issue.
I am starting to think it may be some sort of issue between loading a new ROM (any ROM) and the existing data profile. That would explain why when you revert, the LoS issue goes away, since ROM and profile are now back "sync".
I think anyone rooting/flashing that has LOS should try clearing and updating their data profile and see if it helps, since it helped me with my phone.
Dunno why my stock one would have it tho, maybe it was upgraded from a previous build? This better not be a refurb.
This is just me thinking out loud, so do whatever, I just want to help isolate this issue (even tho my LOS hasn't come back after the profile update).
I've tried everything to induce LOS, I flashed every damn kernel and rom available and still nothing. My daily drive takes me through areas with no service and areas with roaming. The signal alert app I have installed goes freaking crazy beeping when I connect and disconnect from service. And not 1 Los. I call BS blaming it on rooting and kernels exclusively, hell I'd be more willing to believe it's hardware related (I'm sure its not). This phone may have a crap radio in it but it tries like hell to always give me something to work with and I really can't complain.

I would say ditch 1.2 its old there is no further development for it as of right now. You should at least b running gingerbread (hell a lot of us are on ice cream sandwich now, which also has BLUE in the rom) and if you want blue in a gingerbread touchwiz rom just pick a blue theme to put on top of whatever rom u pick I'm sure there is a few blue themes. Getting off froyo has other benefits as well like no ciq at all and other bug fixes, I'm assuming your modem is also ec05 which is also old and u should probably b on ei22 or el30.

All seven of your responses are identical, nothing like beating a dead horse. and all of them correct, yet you still want to run an out dated ROM that has NO support. Nobody is going to flash back to Froyo to diagnose and fix a problem for someone demanding it like we owe you something
I have an Evo and find flashing between roms much easier and the guys on the Q and A sections of those boards are actually helpful. and? 7 people promptly answered your question correctly on how to permanently fix your problem. If your evo buddies are so helpful (they're not http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393443 ) ask them to fix your download issue for you for free. So you know how to flash a ROM easily on your evo, apply your expertise to the epic.
So, one last time, can anyone address the issue or not?
yeah I have the solution. It's not my fault if anything happens because of you not reading these instructions before you even touch your epic. Go find a qbking video.
Now shall we begin?
Download Odin, get any .tar from anywhere in XDA and place the .tar in the PDA section. Select repartition and reset f.time or whatever, and uncheck auto reboot.
Now plug your epic into the computer while the epic is in download mode.
Now click start in Odin and when the green progress bar gets half way, unplug the epic and bingo, you have a brick. Have a nice night.
Nothing to see here folks keep it moving.

I think the real lesson here is -don't root or flash the wife's phone.
Chances are that she really doesn't give a **** about all this "cool" android stuff, and when something does go wrong she's not going to try to fix it herself, rather she will just blame you for screwing it up in the first place and then send you on a quest to fix it.
Why isn't she the one in here asking how to fix her problem?
My suggestion to fix "your" msg problem: I would just Odin her phone back to stock, let her epic take the ota updates, and then never touch the thing again.

Maybe I left out one key line. I have no interest in flashing another rom. If there is not a known fix for this, I will just move on and leave it as is. The entire process of flashing, odin, etc. beyond just simple zip flashes in CWM is more than I am willing to figure out right now and more complicated than the Evo recovery process. Plus in my brief experience, seems less reliable and consistent (only certain cords work, with certain phones on certain computers, etc. I don't want to take the time to learn more about it and fiddle with it because it's my wife's phone and I never have more than an hour or so to work on it. Thanks to those who responded with ideas that didn't involve flashing a new rom, I appreciate it. If anyone else has another work around for this, I would appreciate it.
Thanks

She doesn't care about most of the "cool" stuff, however, she was on the stock gingerbread release and said the camera was really slow and so I saw the video from qb king on flashing SRF 1.2 and gave it a whirl. Aside from this messaging issue (it also won't send mms), the rom is fast and smooth, plus the battery life is terrific.

Wind Mobile Galaxy S3 (T999) users UNITE

A while ago I was a part of the wind mobile optimus 2x (P999) users UNITE threads so to live on with the legacy I figured I would make a thread for the Wind Mobile Galaxy S3 users:
have fun ask questions, shoot the breeze, and just chill with your windy friends

Great idea... first question here... i have never rooted a phone or done anything like that to it... i've always wanted to get into it, but i just never could get up the nuts to do it. funny because i've messed with and modified every other electronic device and pre-android phone i've ever owned... just got scared with android, i guess partly because i cannot afford to have to buy another 700 dollar device...
anyways, i want to go ahead and root my sgs3 on wind mobile, but i have no idea how. can anyone point me to some help... i mean super basic noob help? like a walkthrough? i want to put on CM9 if i can, and whatever rom would be a good one for daily use... i don't really know what different roms are going to get me even, and honestly for the most part the phone works great, but there are a few minor things (like google wallet) that i want access to and can't have without rooting... so i figure i'll go for it
also, will it void my warranty to do this, or can i revert back to stock if i have a warranty issue and then take it in for replacement? thanks for any and all help!
*please ignore*
hot temperature?
Are any of you guys noticing your Wind GS3 being very hot? My battery temperature is at about 35C to 40C after a few minutes browsing or playing games (though it's ~30C when it's not doing much). Feels reasonably uncomfortable to hold while it's hot ... Not sure if the phone is defective or if it's because Wind's (generally) weak signal strength forces the Radio/CPU to crank up a notch or two ...

I'll see if I can come up with something, but just wanted to say that I'm with Wind and I've been able to root it, flash the FreeGS3 (currently R3 right now) ROM and Trinity kernel. Also installed CPU Sleeper and other CPU apps. ~20 hours of battery life (since 7:30am), listened to music at work all day, played games on the train home, wi-fi on at home).
Also used Triangle Away to set the flash count back to 0

that is odd cause my phone sits in around 27 on average so its never hot to the touch so it might be a defect but i would go in and have that checked out in any case

and at last your question here i found a thread that will help you with everything so your not going on a mad man hunt for this information now you can pick whatever rom you want but they have a couple on here but ill have another link for some new roms that are more stable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1723175
so here are a few roms that you can take a stab picking and choosing which you think would like best
CapRom Turbo | AROMA |
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750221
TEAM SONIC'S FREEGS3 R4_U1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750270
and hopefully we will see CM9 show up a bit more soon but all I can find is nightlies for now but i'm sure as we pass a month of this phone being out we will see better roms come out with it .....was kinda hoping for hellfire to move on over but soon enough i'm sure cause he is a great dev for the G2X aka optimus 2x
but for now those are the 2 big ones that i can see and of course as the phone progresses it will get more roms that are better out there
ok, cool, i'm going to read through those links
in the mean time, can anyone point me in the direction of a page, or just explain it, that tells me what the hell a kernel does compared to a rom? what does each of them do, and what does changing each of them get me?
i'm super new to android and honestly, this is getting to be so much for me that i'm getting tempted to just say screw it and not risk messing up my phone that i bought out and paid 700 dollars for by the time i was said and done....
i really do want to get into modding it, but i'm not going to risk screwing it up completely if it's a significant risk, and if i can't get warranty coverage for it if i do mess it up...
any help on clearing up what a kernel does compared to a rom, etc, would be awesome
also what benefits does the FREESG3 rom give me? will i lose out on a lot of the cool stock samsung features? i know some of them are stupid, but i honestly like some of the other ones, like the stock calender and a few others....camera, i dunno what else but i know i like em. lots of the other samsung stuff is crap for sure, but i've dealt with it thus far. also, if i flash a new rom, will i lose all of my existing calender entries or can i back them up and restore them to the new (if it's new) calender in the new rom?
holy *phew* hope that relieves my n00bie question diarrhea for the next 3 minutes...

okay for the most part the kernel doesn't matter most roms have their own kernels but some kernels will allow you to overclock your phone and yes you will lose you current calender entries and technically you will lose your warranty on your phone but the benifits are you can get much better battery life and speed out of your phone realistically but its all up to you on wether you decide to go through with it or not but i like what i got with the s3 personally optimus x2 i had to put custom roms on there cause without it my phone would be ****

ok cool thanks for the help here...
so as far as calender stuff.... can i back it up and restore it, or am i hooped and just stuck losing it? since i have my google stuff, shouldn't it back it up for me? i know when i went from my optimus 2x (un modded) to my sgs3 i just signed into google and everything showed up... won't happen here though or what?
also.....i've been reading about people having to install gapps (google apps i'm guessing?) separately? what's the deal there... do i have to do that? thanks
one other thing i forgot to ask... i've had a few people tell me that, being on wind, i cannot use tmo roms etc like i used to be able to on other phones (apparently) but now it looks like those links above are all tmo roms... i'm confused... am i boing to bork up my phone if i put tmo stuff on it, or no? thanks

well they said that it could cause issues but my old optimus 2x aka g2x worked fine with tmobile roms and btw GS3 is T999 where as the Canadian version is T999V and should have no issues from what i can see if im not mistaken the optimus 2x up here was P990DW where as the tmo version was T990 but the roms and everything were the same for both.
where as for the calendar its prob a loss and yes you install gapps separately but just follow the instruction and it will lead you through everything safely but here is another link just in case

i still am looking for confirmation that people are just simply flashing tmo firmwares onto wind phonse.,.. it's all fine and dandy that it SHOULD work, but i'm in construction and my phone is my lifeline so i really can't risk it not working...
Yes one of the other users I'm this thread uses it on his phone so you should be okay where as for me I haven't done anything yet since I actually don't mind the stock Rom unlike my experience with the optimus 2x
