[ROM][NS4G][GRJ90] full_crespo4g-eng 2.3.5 built from source. *UPDATE 8/14/2011* - Nexus S 4G Android Development

I decided to go a different direction from the "bleeding edge" of Android and built a fully working, very stable GRJ90-eng build.
Tweaks/MODs:
Native tethering working and stable (3G only)
A few data tweaks over the Sprint GRJ90 tweaks for better data throughput and stability
1x and 3G icons displaying correctly (Sprint decided to drop the 1x icon while on 1xRTT)
Not working:
4G Tethering... not much I can do with this right now until I get word about custom drivers.
VPN connections won't connect/authenticate
Auto-Rotate sensor - module wasn't included into build for whatever reason.
It's come to my attention that people think there is a bug with the stock recovery reflashing itself on reboot. That was my intention; I wanted it that way for security reasons. If you don't know how to use fastboot, or download/flash from the phone, an eng build is probably not for you.
I have included an update.zip this time, so you don't have to fastboot the ROM
08-14-2011 UPDATE [Fastboot only]
Let me know how this one works for you. The recovery reinstalling after every boot should be fixed with installing via fastboot.
Download ROM8/3/2011 OTA.zip build
Download NS4G gapps
I am also including the stock bootanimation.zip if you'd like to use that instead of the stock Android kernel one.
Download Bootanimation.zip
Instructions to install:
Do a NANDROID (need it if you want to fastboot your data img back on if you are using a GRJ90 based ROM)
Wipe ALL partitions and cache
Flash ROM
DO NOT REBOOT - Flash gapps, REBOOT
Screen shots:
About Phone with MHS enabled
CDMA Only selection and 1x status icon
Hybrid Mode selection and 3G status icon

So what are the details of this??
Do we need to install gapps?
What partitions will this format and install over?
Will this effect the /efs partition?

I had a few requests for this... but here is a eng build from source. Basically is stock root odexed with extra official development options. Sprint stuff is included.

Forgot to mention... this has to be flashed via fastboot since it contains the partition imgs.

It's a eng build direct from the Android source code. It's mainly for people who want fully rooted stock Android 2.3.4.
Google apps are not included in eng builds.
This wont format any partitions, you'll have to fastboot erase you're existing partitions (except recovery if you have a non-stock one)
And this will not touch /efs. As I said, it's directly from Google built by me (no tweaks).

Yeah, I keep coming across a lot of tweaked rooted stock OTAs... so this one gives everyone a nice base for all their development since it's Officially unofficially from Google themselves.

Hey man, I have a few questions for you...You around?

I was told about this last week... Google made a change and caused this to be a hit or miss thing. It flashes fine to my phone and 2 others that I'm aware of. However most people are experiencing a major issue with core components.
I'm going to sync tonight and skim through the code and update tomorrow.
Quick question first; Would everyone want an update.zip or are fastboot imgs fine?

Update zip please
Uncle Jimmy says hello

Well the build has failed 8 times. I thought it was maybe because of the otapackage part of the build so I tried without, and it still failed. I'm perplexed on what's failing because it just returns; "Build fail: error 21"

I'm thinking Google is in the process of an update very soon. Hence why my original build works for some but not most, and why builds are failing now.

Finally get a successful build?

I'm just finishing testing on a current build, and will be posting tomorrow afternoon. I'll also post a link to the NS4G gapps, just incase.

Successful build is up in OP. Tested on multiple devices and all seems a go.

Awesome work. Thanks man!

I've flashed things from fastboot before. But what's the cmd line on flashing a rom? Is it fastboot flash xxx.rar?

No, you have to unrar the images. Put them in your fastboot directory (unless you have a path variable for fastboot) and type "fastboot -w flashall".
Remember this is a DEVELOPMENT ROM... meaning that you have FULL ROOT at ALL TIMES. Some apps will not play nicely with it.

[ROM][CM9][AOKP] Temporary Stock E4GT from emmc

Epic Touch Blog: Temporary Stock E4GT from emmc
Utility for CM9 Epic Touch
This is a temporary ROM that boots Samsung's Gingerbread EL29 firmware entirely from emmc without making any changes to the ROM currently installed on your phone. When you reboot, you return to recovery where you can re-flash the ROM to return to CM9. This temporary ROM is useful for several purposes.
Update Profile.
Update PRL.
Sprint Activation.
Dial codes and diagnostic mode.
This should be helpful to users of any AOSP-based ROM including CM9, AOKP, etc.
Thanks to noobnl and mkasick for making this possible!
Really nice thanks a lot.

Would this work to flash .zip updates (such as kobridge) or updated ROMs (such as alpha5)?
This definitely will come in handy, can I suggest seeing if you can get a video made of how it works. I can honestly say It seems to help out quite a bit in this forum for a lot of people and does cut down on the crazy questions.
Great job though!

You can use the directbootCWM file to update CM9 yes. Not sure about using it for Kobridge tweaks.

Its for AOSP roms. You currently can't update PRL/Profile, activate your device, or use dialer codes on them so this temporarily allows you to boot stock el29 off the SD card without changing your current rom. You can do what i said from there. Saves you time from doing backups, restoring, etc.

I'm hoping that someone can help me out as I am unable to boot into the temporary ROM. Here are the steps I followed:
1. I have everything extracted to emmc as directed.
2. I flashed directboot CWM utilizing mobile odin which correctly booted me into CWM version 5.0.2.7
3. I flashed boot_EL29.zip at location /emmc/multiboot/EL29 and received the following messages that appear to be correct.
Finding Update Package...Opening Update Package...Installing Update...Boot /emmc/multiboot/EL29/zImageCreate mount symlink.Remount partitions read-only.(Re)mount /emmc read-only.Unpack kexec.Load zImage and initramfs.Sync.Reboot into zImage.Install from sdcard complete.4. At this point I expected the phone to reboot into the temporary rom; however, it just shows the standard recovery menu. No reboot occured.
5. Because no automatic reboot occured, I selected "reboot system now" from CWM. Unfortunately this just brings me back into directboot CWM.
Thanks in advance for any help provided.
I am having the same problem I thought it could have been the downloading or unpacking so I downloaded it again and unpacked it and still have the same problem.

When done updating prl/profile, etc. Just reboot your phone and it will take you back to cwm recovery. From there you can either just reflash the rom or just a compatible kernel so it boots.

They are all based off the Linux kernel. You just need to make sure you're flashing the correct version intended for your ROM. The later ROMS are running off Linux 3.4.x. However, Keep in mind that the latest kernels will NOT work on ROMs that were released before 4/19. Be sure to only flash the updated kernels released on that date or later or your phone will not boot . So in your case you must update to one of the latest CM nightlies (AFTER 4/19) if you wanna flash any of these later 3rd party kernels.
For future reference you can check the linux version of any ROM in Settings > About Phone> Kernel version. Also do some more reading next time bud. This whole kernel deal has been discussed countless times in numerous threads.

OK, I'm also having troubles with tethering. While I have very few posts here, I'm not exactly inexperienced. I've been putting custom ROMs on since I had my G1.
I'm running a recently nightly of CM10.1 (4/20 so a 3.4 kernel) and obviously (as discussed above) it can't natively do wifi tethering. Found this thread and a couple others stating a needed a different kernel (that's a first for me, hadn't ventured into changing kernels).
Searched around and initially went with BMS, however I had the same problem - no wifi tethering.
Based on the advice here, downloaded and installed Ktoonsez's K747 kernel. Same thing.
In all cases, I've tried with WPA2 and unsecured. In all cases, devices can see the AP and can connect but no data is transferred. There has got to be something simple I am missing here. I really miss tethering (use it for internet on my Transformer Prime when I'm on the road).

Something is clearly wrong here. I just did a completely clean flash (factory reset/wipe) of the latest nightly and then laid on the latest KT kernel and I still have no hotspot ability whether with WPA2 or open. I can see the hotspot but no data transfers.

Hmm, USB tethering doesn't work either. I'm guessing there is one common cause
By golly, I think I've got it. I did ANOTHER wipe and install and immediately tried the hotspot and it worked. Prior to this, I noted that my CWM was horribly out of date and was not 3.4 kernel aware (as evidenced by nested 0 directories). So I fixed that and then flashed and it worked. I then went to work restoring data using Titanium backup and that's when things went to hell. Something in the restore hoses the ability to use the hotspot. So now I am doing a more controlled recovery hoping that I can get back all the data I need without hosing the hotspot.
So, this explains why a dirty flash didn't work. Whatever breaks it was obviously there under the dirty flash. And my previous clean flashes always had a restore via TB immediately afterwards.
So, not sure whether it is only the restore issue, or if the old CWM also had a hand in it, but either way, I think I'm gonna succeed here.
Can someone post a step by step fix please?
I have the same problem; I have tried to replicate the solutions here, to no avail. Flashed anew, still same problem.
Can someone please post a step-by-step fix? Can I just flash a new kernel and be done? I'm on CyanogenMod ROM, 4.4.2, 11-20140210.
Thanks!

[Q] what's the deal with 4.3?

- For android 4.3, there has been a lot of talk on the developer section, and from what I can see, the major bugs/issues have been fixed. Like the ROM not rebooting correctly. For those using 4.3, is this true?
- Also, from what I understand, this was due to the recoveries not being ready for 4.3, however CM released their own bare bone recovery to fix that issue. And then I've read that the TW recovery has also been updated to solve this problem.
-There is a lot of information in the development forums, but I have not seen any post on the steps on what to do in order to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.3.
-Right now I have CWM 5 recovery, because that's been working for me, and I never bothered changing (bad experience with trying to upgrade/change a recovery). Now from what I understand, I should be able to flash the newest touch recovery (via the goo app?), and then wipe and flash any 4.3 ROM. Any detail instructions would be a help, or if someone can create a tutorial post, that would be great.
Thanks in advance.
Here is a post I made yesterday about how I switched from 4.2 to 4.3
I hope it helps. I have been on hellybean 4.3 for two days and everything is running great.

You could just install ROM Manager and update from there. It's super-easy (you need ROOT, but I presume you have that since you're flashing ROMs anyway). :good:

Many people have had bad experiences with ROM Manager. Especially in the Gingerbread days when its use was more common for this sort of thing.
Just my 2 cents.

Interesting -- always been good to me, although I only use it to update the recovery; for the ROM itself I use Cyanogen's update util. I also use CWM, not TWRP, so there's that...

Ur best and safest approach would be to DL Odin and the drivers for ur phone, then go to techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules and DL twrp2.6.0.4, this is the 4.3 compatible version, then put ur device in DL mode and connect to odin, load the tar file in PDA and click start, 30 sec and u have the latest and greatest twrp recovery, now go get hellybean 4.3 or beanstalk4.3 and flash it, watch the beauty take place...

I updated my rom today like I usually do from the CMUpdater and it updated from 4.2 to 4.3. I didn't mean or want to do that, but it didn't tell me otherwise. Now I'm having issues left and right......the one time I don't back it up...grrr.
I'm having the most issues with Gapps. I downloaded the new one and installed it and Google Music and Youtube keeps crashing. I guess I'll be doing the full wipe now.
Did u update to 4 3 gapps? It won't do it automatically, even if u updated through goo it just looks at what version is installed and updates that version, 4.3 gapps can be found in any 4.3 thread

CWMR 6.0.3.7 - need testers

Hey there
Here is a 6.0.3.7 cm10.1 source built cwmr for people who are willing to test out the restore function. I need my phone in functioning order until Saturday until I can test it myself but figured this might help people in the meantime.
Features:
Touch interface
Large fonts for easier use
Rebuilt kernel to remove root protections so adb shell functions as expected
I have tested filesystem mounts and backups and everything there works fine, but I am waiting on stock firmware to download and some free time to be without a device if restore borks things. Flashing the stock rom via odin will fix issues due to restore if there are any, but I need some willing users. If no one can I will do it myself this weekend.

Flash with heimdall, the stock rom does not overwrite recovery on this device.
Here is an untested ODIN compatible tar (I dont use windows) but it should flash fine, contains the above image:

Thanks to Dees Troy for the dtb tips.
edit: sounds like restore is derped in all the recoveries so far so I'm going to work on it this weekend and get a fix up when it's ready. Seems like perhaps the way /system is restored is causing grief.

Thanks, I'm hoping the new kernel might address the restore problems others have mentioned on different recoveries for hlte, I need logs from people to do much else until Saturday.
Will test as soon as I get the phone. You'll most likely have other testers before I can though:/
If anyone tests this and break their phone, this is how you fix it.
Step one: Reboot back into CWM recovery (TWRP also works, if you feel like flashing that)
Step two: format data (you have to format, NOT wipe. wiping won't do it). Again, this works in either recovery.
Step three: wipe cache/dalvik/data
step four: download and odin flash a stock image
And your Note 3 should boot again and you won't be soft bricked for 3 1/2 hours like I was
Some good news. Builds 2 and 3 can restore and boot, but lead to a lot of force closes....for those who wanna know
All, the issue is most likely with selinux being enforced in the kernel and tar not backing up the metadata properly during the backup process.
I am working on a fix now, but no recovery will work properly for the time being, stay tuned.

What about those people who's restoring and backup is working properly?
will this cwmr work on the Canadian SM-N900W8?

Not possible atm with CWMR, but could very well be working with TWRP.
CWMR is missing the underlying technology to make restore possible on an selinux enforcing device at the moment.

It wont assert right even if it does flash and boot. W8 might use a different dtb blob too, so I would recommend against flashing this period on a non t-mobile device.
Once I can get CWMR working, I will make more variants for all the other users, but the tmo device is what I have and am testing against.

I've tested the Tmob version of TWRP on my SM-N900W8 and worked fine. Not sure if that helps

Chenglu's CWM has been confirmed working now in the GN3 section. Not sure if anyone who has the phone wants to try that out.

According to three people on there they have successfully flashed the T-Mobile one.

I want to root my device. I read cf auto root thread and it seems easy enough. I always used cwm on all my previous devices. Is cwm working on the note 3 from this post? Which cwm do I install?

So for chenglus cwm you cannot restore backups??

[Q] Need Help Flashing a ROM

Hi guys, sorry if this is stupid. I've flashed ROMs to 3 or 4 phones before this one and didn't have any issues with them, but this time around it doesn't seem so easy. My phone is a virgin mobile galaxy s2 (d710)
My phone has been rooted for a while and my stock ROM started randomly freezing up on me 4-5 times/day, so I finally decided to flash a ROM. The stickied post says to use odin mobile to flash to GB - EL26 Stock w/ CWM then to flash the ROM I want. Any ROM I tried flashing gave a status 7 error and aborted, EXCEPT for one ROM, and on that one I didn't even have working 3G? I believe this thread implied doing it any other way would be a hard brick.
I finally ended up using samsung's official upgrade tool in download mode to flash back to stock ROM, but it would be nice to get a custom on now that I've put time into it.
Can anyone point me in the direction I need to go?
Thanks
EDIT: I'm currently on the 4.1.2 stock ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50070702
I'm guessing you're trying to flash a KitKat ROM? Using Mobile Odin and EL26CWM will work when flashing 4.2.2 (and under) ROMs, but not KitKat. You'll need the last Blasphemy 6.6 kernel (just for the updated ClockworkMod), located in Original Development, for that.
In your case, you'll probably want to flash FJ12 or FL26 (if you can find it) modem zips, as you're on Virgin Mobile, and those are ICS Virgin Mobile modems, which you'll need to have working data/internet on Any AOSP ROM (JB modems won't work).
And this guide is assuming you're completely stock JB firmware, not rooted.

It looks like I'm on GB28 stock. I think agats caused a soft brick. I'm reflashing back to stock again now....I don't know what's going on with this phone.
Edit: Retried, got it to work this time. Thanks.
Is there a reason why you have to flash one recovery just to move onto another one? Would any recovery work installing any ROM? I'm a bit confused by all these different recoveries, since my last phone only needed one.

On this device, recovery comes bundled with the kernel. When you flash a ROM or kernel, the recovery that was on gets overwritten by the recovery that comes with the ROM/kernel you're flashing.
The reason everybody started using EL26CWM (gingerbread kernel) was due to a bug in the stock ICS firmware that was causing some people's devices to be permanently bricked when doing a factory reset.
Status 7 error when flashing is usually due to using a recovery that's too old.
So to answer your question... No, there is no "be-all, end-all" recovery for this device. Sorry [emoji20]
Glad you got it working though

Thanks for the help. Now that I'm running CM11, I don't have visual voicemail and it looks like I can't receive MMS.
Serious props to the people that use custom ROMs that aren't driven insane by bugs, I'm irritated by it already.
Know of any fix?
I don't know about visual voicemail... I'm flashed to Cricket and just use the built-in voicemail statusbar notification. Have you tried pushing the apk manually? I'm pretty sure I've seen Virgin Mobile fixes here in the d710 forum.
As far as MMS goes, have you tried messing with the APN's? I don't think MMS will work as-flashed, out-of-the-box for you without modifying them for Virgin.
If you're getting annoyed by bugs, have you given stock, rooted deodexed GB28 a try? When i get the TouchWiz itch, I run deodexed GB28, along with Agat's 1.3 kernel, TD's AIO mod, and Missing Link mod (both found in Themes and Apps of this forum).
I'm currently running Slimbean build 7 (4.2.2) as it's super lightweight, stable, and has good battery-life.

Do you know where I could find the voicemail apk?
Also, where can I mess with the APNs/what would work there?
The only reason I want a custom ROM at all is to be on KitKat. It honestly disgusts me a bit that google hasn't standardized versions....I don't get why every phone needs it's own ROM and never gets updated....
Thanks man.
Edit: I did find a MMS fix and visual voicemail all in one zip, but flashing it screwed the phone and I had to restore in recovery.
As far as editing APN's, I use Nova Prime launcher to create a shortcut on my homescreen to access them. Create shortcut to Activities/Settings/APNs and make your edits there.
Have you tried extracting the contents of the zip and manually applying those changes? Sorry but I wouldn't know anything else about configuring for Virgin. Maybe you could ask in that respective ROM thread, as I'm sure there are Virgin Mobile users there that have everything working.

Thanks for the ideas, I'm a bit slow sometimes when it comes to android/linux. I pulled the apk out of the zip, installed it, that's working fine. I just need to find a fix for my MMS. I can send but not receive.
Edit: I found a way to open the APN settings using voice dialer, but it's blank and choosing to add one, it does not save.

Just for clarification, if I want to flash a new ROM when I'm already on a custom, do I need to use odin mobile to flash back to that GB rom with CWM before I flash the recovery and new ROM? Or can I just wipe and flash new recovery from the one I have now?

If the new recovery you are talking about is safe to flash from...and the one you are currently using is safe to flash from...then you can just reboot recovery and wipe cache and dalvik, then flash new recovery and then reboot recovery. Now you will be on the new, safe, recovery. So do your wipes ( data, cache, dalvik cache and format system ) and flash the rom.
If you want to go the mobile odin way..in case the recovery you currently have cant flash the new recovery you need, in order to flash the rom of choice..which im assuming is kitkat. As it needs the most up to date recovery to flash properly.
Then i have a simple guide you can follow to flash a safe kernel/recovery, in which you can then flash the newer recovery for flashing the rom you have choosen.
Link to guide. Post 5 is what you need to read.
If this sounds complicated or confusing..please post a link to current rom you wish to install and i will read the op and point you down the correct path.
Thanks, I was looking to use either of these. I've had issues with ROMs so far because I'm on Virgin Mobile and lots of stuff is buggy. Not sure which of these will work best:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/epic-4g-touch/orig-development/rom-liquidsmooth-v3-1-t2803683
I'm not normally confused by rooting/flashing, but I don't understand the whole "safe recovery" thing.

I see. Im not too familiar with what works with virgin mobile.
But if you can flash a virgin modem and set your apns after a flash.. That will get your data working. I'm at work.. But let me refewsh my memory later about virgin mobile on this device and I'll hit ya back.
Fyi.. I think jdsingle made a virgin mobile rom a while back.

Yeah, I tried that one, it continually crashed my launcher every 3 seconds, had to reflash the ROM. It did give me the voicemail apk I needed though! Really if I could just get flash instructions for going from one rom to another, I'd be set probably.
Have you tried applying the changes and setting permissions in the zip manually, like with Root Explorer?

No, I'm honestly not sure how to do that. Linux's file structure is confusing to me. Granted I'm also having wifi problems on this rom too, it disconnects all the time.

It honestly isn't too difficult at all. All I see in the zip is a new apns-conf.xml (permissions are rw-r-r), 2 build.prop edits, and the deleting of telephony.db located in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
