Do these games work well on the G2? - G2 and Desire Z Themes and Apps

Hey guys, just getting myself acquainted to the G2 before I actually get my hands on it. (should be arriving in 4.5 hours.) I am coming from the LG Optimus T and as you guys probably know it can't really do a spectacular amount of things when it comes down to 3D games. Anywho, my question for you guys this morning is... What games (rpg, fps, etc.) do you guys play on the G2 and how well do they work? I would love to play something like Dungeon Defender, Dungeon Hunter 2, or even N.O.V.A. 2, is that a possibility?

The G2, while underclocked at 800 mhz, has a second-generation Qualcomm processor, meaning it can out-preform phones with a 1ghz first-generation Qualcomm (i.e. Nexus One). I've used an Optimus T as well, and the difference between it and the G2 is incredible. I don't think you'll have a problem -- my G2 has run every game I've thrown at it without the slightest hint of lag. It's not going to have as much power as a phone sporting a Nvidia or dual-core processor, but I haven't run into any problems whatsoever.

if games do give you any trouble at all (they shouldn't, the only lag i get at all is on my n64 emulator playing megaman64) just download chainfire3d from the market, it requires root tho, but it lets you mess with the textures and increase framerate, its pretty cool. honestly there are no games made currently that cant be handled by our phone.

Every game I've tryed runs perfectly. It has the most powerful GPU (behind the galaxy s by a little bit) of any single core phone, and is 4x faster than the adreno 200 in the nexus one, which is usually the development phone for games. You shouldn't have any problems with any gameloft games for the time being, but you can always OC to 1.9Ghz should games decide to demand more (^o^).
The only games that our phone can't run are specific tegra-2 optimized games. This is because they only support dualcore, but it is an android rather than a g2 problem. By the time Ice Cream Sandwhich comes along, tegra2 games should run on our phone.

Any Gameloft game you use on the G2 will run really well except for one big problem.. usually after the second or third time you play one of those games, the load times increase dramatically. To the point where it's not even worth trying to play anymore.

Eric, that doesn't happen to me. Honestly OP, if you want a device for gaming, this iis the one to get.

[Q] Gaming...lag

Been trying out the games from gameloft
assassin's creed, fifa and splinter cell....
been experiencing an annoying lag (low fps)...
was wondering if there is a way to play these games smoothly on the desire?
any particular rom that anyone can recommend?
I've got an unrooted phon e..
You do know the Desire is a phone and not a console don't you?
Kernels with the GPU+ fix improves performance. But undoubtly the Desire is not for gaming. DHD, PowerVR GPU handsets and the upcoming Tegra 2 platforms are focused on the performance hungry apps.

and you must know that the upcoming phones / also the current samsung galaxy or the htc desire hd can play these games smoothly on them...wasnt talking about playin the 360 ones on the phone
Facepalm why did you even buy this phone? Lol
If you want gaming then buy a PSP/ipod touch.
Besides this phone doesn't support multi-touch and the axis tends to glitch up...
Aside from that, no.
I don't lag when I play high performance games.
Root ftw. Unroot ftl. This phone has WAY too much potentials UNTAPPED without rooting
Oh and FYI DHD is running an updated Adreno 205.
And SGS is running a MUCH better GPU.

[Q] N64oid Performance on Galaxy Nexus

Anyone have any clue as to how N64oid will perform on the Galaxy Nexus? The gpu is less than overwhelming, and with the notable increase in screen resolution, it's being strained even harder.
I don't have any idea how N64oid utilizes resources, the CPU should certainly be fast enough to power the game, but is it going to be playable with the SGX540?

If it doesn't work well... just wait for a more powerful smartphone. If the Galaxy Nexus can't do it, no smartphone can either. At least, not yet.
I want to know how well psx emulators work. Im sure nes/snes will be fine.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
Well has anyone tried it on an Archos 101 or Archos 80 Turbo? They're running the same chip, and have similar resolutions. (the 101's running 1280x600 and the 80 is 1024x768) if it runs well on them, it should run well on the Galaxy Nexus.
yeah, like emulator games require a lot f gpu! lmao... the dangers f ignorancy..!

food for thought-
nexus s released with the exact same hardware as the galaxy s(released 1 yr b4 it). same hummingbird soc, same gpu, same ram, etc etc.it was the time when there were phones like the atrix around. extremely dissapointing. but even now the nexus s is one of the highest benchmarked, best performing phones around. reason? not hardware, but software. google is a huge and vastly successful company,as is samsung, no doubt. there are brains inside google that retards like the "nexus haters" cant even grasp the height of. when they build a phone, they build one on which they can apply all the optimizations and improvements that they possibly can; they know, that by the time they are done with the GN, they will have extracted 100% out of it. Samsung on the other hand , will be hard pressed to deliver ics+tw, u would be a fool to expect them 2 integrate all the optimizations that google comes up with, every time. stop looking at benchmarks. samsung wont even be able to harness 60% the power of the mali400, let alone 100%. look at galaxy tab 10.1 n xoom. nexus s n galaxy s.
BECAUSE GOOGLE MAKES ANDROID, NOT SAMSUNG.
If they think its best to use 4460 instead of exynos,it is.
If they think it is best not 2 use sdcard, it isnt. (i dont agree with it tho)
If they think its best to include sgx540, then it is. trust me, they know what they are doing. They know that gs2 has mali400, and almost all games released in the future will be tested to run on the GN. So if they think that clocking it at 384 will outperform mali400, who r u 2 argue??????????????
So in the end , if you are really sure that samsung will optimize the gs2 2 its full potential, will give out updates every month, and your gs2's tw infested hardware will save your ass for the next 2 years, then go ahead, bash GN all you like.
Because, truthfully, its not GN vs GS2 at all, its what you "think" vs what all the designers @google+samsung THINK is best.
PERIOD.

check this out 2.
I agree that optimizations have the potential to make up for deficits in actual hardware improvements. (though saying that it can make up for a 4 year old gpu which already got its chance to be optimized on the Nexus S is stretching it) But my point is still not about hardware optimization, my question is weather or not anyone has experience running emulators on similar hardware, no need to jump all over me.

n64oid like most emulators on the Android platform runs the games at their native resolution and just stretches them. It doesn't actually render them in the screens native resolution, so the processing power involved in simply stretching the image and not even doing any upscaling in the conventional sense is minimal.
Thanks, that gives me a lot more confidence in the device. As well, I've seen some video of split screen multiplayer on a HDTV using controllers, if the SGSII can do that, I think I should be able to play some Starfox on Nexus.
... ... ...
My Captivate ran PSX4Droid just fine (I'm not sure about N64oid, I don't believe I used it on my Captivate). Granted, it had DesignGear's ROM on it, and had a custom kernel, but it ran emulators without a hiccup. Well, except for the sound, but that had to do with the emulator, not the phone.
I didn't play a ton of games on it, but I know FFVII and Brave Fencer Musashi ran pretty much perfectly. I don't think the GN will have an issue with this at all.
No one should be using PSX4Droid anymore. FPSE destroys it in terms of features, performance, compatibility, etc
... ... ...
... ... ...
N64oid plays all games flawlessly without hiccups on my g2x (1ghz tegra 2) so I would assume it would work just as well

My xperia play runs n64oid and fpse games almost flawlessly aside from some emulation problems. Its only a singe core that i have overclocked to 1.3ghz and almost all games run at 60fps with a few drops here and there but 60fps 98% of the time.

No lag
High FPS
Good sound.
Near flawless on aosp sgs...little laggy on touchwiz charge. No worries about n64 or psx2 emulation on this phone. I expect comparable performance to a sgs ii in most areas gpu wise. Obviously each chip has their own pros and cons but they're definitely both high end.

The subject that was bound to come back sometime - Gaming

Hey everyone,
This question was bound to come back sometime, and since I have one day left to return the Galaxy Nexus, I wanted to re-raise the issue.
First of all, the GPU of the Galaxy Nexus is the PowerVR SGX540 clocked at 307mhz. Other phones that have come out relatively close to the Galaxy Nexus are the Samsung Galaxy S ll , HTC EVO 3D and finally the iPhone 4s (or the iPad in the site below) have much better benchmark scores compared to the Galaxy Nexus. Now I know the performance heavily depends on the drivers/etc installed but would that make any difference from a phone like the Galaxy S in terms of gaming performance?
According to these benchmarks: here the phone with the PowerVR SGX 540 at 300mhz (Optimus 3D) performs pretty horribly, and I have this phone for another 14 months. Since I consider myself an avid gamer, I want to know if you guys think this phone can last 14 months in terms of the GPU. I know its found in plenty of older devices such as the Galaxy S and the Nexus S, but there are so many games already optimized for it so do you guys think developers will continue to support this fairly dated GPU for the 14 months to come?
Now I'm no technology expert, so I'd appreciate if someone else could help me out here
Thanks,
Mosh
benchmarks don't really mean much to be honest. you could run the exact same test 10 times and get a different result each time.
as far as what this phone can handle... well, i have tried the following:
Shadow Gun
Sentinel 3
Samurai II
Fruit Ninja
Field Runners HD
Shinobi Barrage
all those games play fine for the most part, just a lil slow down here & there in the more graphically intense games like Shadow Gun(this game also makes the phone run very hot). as far as other phones go, i have tried all those games on my Rezound and they played just fine on that phone to. actually, Shadow Gun was a bit smoother on the Rezound(but only slightly).
i'd say as far as 'top-of-line' phones go(on Verizon at least) the 2 tops are the Nexus & the Rezound.
as for the future, supposedly Asus & HTC have quad-core phones with Tegra 3 GPU's coming out 1st Q 2012, but who knows how soon that actually will be(most likely will be push backs & won't see the light until summer or later)
First, the GN GPU is clocked at 384 MHz, second there is not yet a single game (game, not benchmark!) out there that comes close to utilizing the Tegra2 GPU (which is not "very good" either) to its fullest. Draw your own conclusions.
Mine are that the GN GPU will be more than enough until the phone is "old tech" anyway.

Umm.. no.. its actually clocked at 307MHZ. Only way to see it clocked at 384MHZ is if you OC to 1.4 GHZ (CPU) which many Nexus become unstable or become slower for some reason. The Rez plays games better but its not a huge upgrade either. If you want a stronger GPU, wait for the Adreno 225+ or the new Galaxy S3. The Tegra 3 from what I remember reading seems to be still slower than the Exynos chip which to me is a dissappointment.
If we get games like Real Racing 2 graphics or better, our GPU's will not be strong enough to support them. The iPad 2 at times slightly stutters on Real Racing 2 even with its strong GPU.

The only game that I've tried to play other than Words with friends and Hanging with friends is Airport Mania 2 HD, which runs horribly on my Galaxy Nexus (with and without GPU rendering forced). Just food for thought. I'm wondering if 4.0.3 will help it out any. If it does, good, if not, oh well as I really don't play games that often, but it would still be nice to be able to play it on a "top of the line" phone. Other than that, I still like my phone.
I noticed the slow downs in Shadow Gun too. Which prompted me to try overclocking. My phone stutters at 1.4 but very smooth at 1.35. Games play better too. And they're just getting started, who knows what they can do... I think its gonna work out great.

The A5 in the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 has a dual-core SGX543MP2, which is why it benchmarks a lot higher. If you want a mobile device that will give the best gaming experience, the iPhone 4s is your best bet as it has the most powerful GPU out of all phones available.
i thought the gpu was 308 mhz? aaaand you don't need to oc to 1.4ghz for 384 mhz. i'm running 384 mhz stock and uv'ed. and yeah the 543mp2 suck up juice when you push them. but so does the 540. i'm happy with it. great balanced phone. should last two years. and somebody supposedly oc'ed the the 540 to 512mhz but i haven't seen a followup or proof yet so who knows.
You want a great gaming device, get a tablet, or better yet, the PS Vita, which will have much better software titles from A+ game studios.
I hear all of this talk about how well or how poorly these devices (i4s included) do with gaming, but I say, who cares? There are good games on Android and iOS, but hardly anything worth investing 30-40 hours of time in, like the Vita will have. The way I see it, if I really wanted to have an amazing portable gaming experience, the 250 dollar Vita will give me Uncharted, Killzone, Metal Gear Solid, God of War, LittleBigPlanet, etc etc. The list goes on. Plus that 250 dollars will, as a console, last me more than 2 years. Plus it actually has buttons and thumbsticks and such, things that are pretty important IMO.
Thanks for all the replies guys!
One thing to be noted though: The GPU can be overclocked without overclocking the CPU.
Another thing though, I'm actually not going to return it because I realized that I barely need to play a 20+ hour game on my phone. At home I have a computer (With an i5 2500k and a GTX 560 Ti), Ps3, xbox 360, etc so there's no room for a mobile device in terms of gaming at home, and when I'm out I'm usually at school so I barely game, and when I do, casual games are sufficient for my needs.
Thanks again guys

Quadrant doesn't mean much, it isn't optimized for ICS yet.
The Mali 400 is a newer and much faster GPU than the SGX540, the 540 is a leftover from the original Galaxy S and Nexus S. The Exynos CPU is nothing short of amazing. I did some side by side testing of the Nexus and the GS2 today and it wasn't even close the GS2 smoked it in every test and game.

Haters gonna hate, but if you want a device for gaming, you should honestly look at an Apple device. The native nature of iOS apps gives Apple an advantage over Android right from the get go. Java apps will always be slower than apps written in C (or in this case Objective-C) for any given level of coder skill. Then you have to consider that Apple's current iPhone/iPad platform are running hardware that is uncharacteristically powerful compared to not only what Apple is notorious for using, but to most Android devices as well. Finally, the grim reality is still that the big name studios prefer to develop for iOS.
If you are ok with giving up many of the freedoms you may have become accustomed to with Android in exchange for gaming performance and selection, then the 4S is probably a good choice.

NDS emulators and pokemon

Hello.
I'd like to start a conversation about pokemon games running on android emulators.
I've read somewhere that pokemon games are designed not to work on emu's,but i still want to discuss it.
So,i've tried to run pokemon diamond on every single NDS emulator there is for android. Dsoid,nds4droid,Andsemu.
And all run it the same. I can get in the game, the part when rowan talks is really smooth, like in real NDS,but, the in game performance is really laggy.
But thats my case,i have an underclocked and undervolted phone,so,maybie someone got it partly smooth? Like, not so smooth like in the actual console, but not so laggy that its unplayable?
Second,i've tried to run Pokemon platinum, and it got to the "press start" screen. Freezes.
Someone even said they got pokemon white running, gonna try that.

almost the same result though it feels a liiiiitle bit faster( 21 fps average) its still too slow to be played
maybe we just have to wait for more updates, all emulators struggle at first
but on the surface pokemon doesnt seem like a very demanding game imo
n64 and ps1 games seem way more demanding but play very smooth on this phone or any quad or dual around, so i guess its a matter of optimization

Its not only about processing power as the original ds has the same hardware as an old Android Phone, but mostly about coding. Ds emus on Android are on diapers. Honestly they probably won't ever run fast. The ones on PC still don't run even great, although you will get a steady game with decent specs. I wouldn't count on running a Nds emu anytime soon until we have a strong spec'd phone.

It is about processing power. I believe to emulate any system full speed you need to run on a system about 4X more powerfully than what you're emulating. Unless the emulators start utilizing multiple cores (I don't believe they do now) you probably need around 2 GHz chip for effective nds emulation.

Waaaay more than 4x the power if the emu is not optimized. Considering the NDS has a 66mhz cpu and our 1.0 + ghz phones can't do it.
Unless the emulator is written to take advantage of multiple cores, it, like most programs, will use just a single core. So a single-core processor clocked at 3GHz will outperform a quad-core clocked at 2GHz (in respects to emulation performance).
FYI, most Intel Core-i processors have built-in per-core overclocking: a single core under demand will be overclocked as long as the overall CPU temperature is within normal parameters.
Don't forget to play around with the emulator's graphics settings as well as your video card's (GPU settings for phones). Reducing or turning off anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, texture quality, triple buffering, etc will increase your frame rate.
Your version of android and custom ROM can definitely be affecting your game play. My favorite ROM is Eclipse 2.1 Build 4 (Android 4.1.2) with the latest LeanKernel. It's by far the most stable and fastest ROM/kernel combo I've tested on my Gnex. I can overclock the CPU from 1200MHz to 1650MHz, and the GPU from 307MHz to 512MHz. You can also force 16-bit transparency for even more graphics performance.
If someone can PM me a link to the emulator and game, I can test it and report back.

Pokemon has anti-piracy features so you'll get trouble emulating it.

Even though you have the right to have a rom as a backup to the actual game and also there are anti-piracy ar codes and patches for the roms. That's how people bypass them.

Well... all my GBA pokemon roms work fine on my galaxy note but all ds games run crappy. Its not only about processing power as the original ds has the same hardware as an old Android Phone, but mostly about coding. Ds emus on Android are on diapers. Les hope they manage to make them work better later on. Right now i play ds games on my pc. Flawlessly i must say.

Just to add what Speedyink and Iloqutiss has already said, it's not about the sheer power, in fact, we can theoretically easily reach sky-high frame per second with our hardware, but emulators are not coded for high frame rate, it's coded for, well, emulation, it needs to mimic the target hardware platform, and this includes the accuracy and latency, and this means a hell lot of processing power, which will whether you like it or not, reduces the speed considerably.
Emulator is not coded for being fast, it's coded for being accurate, here's a good writeup by Ars about how emulators generally works: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2011/...-3ghz-quest-to-build-a-perfect-snes-emulator/
EDIT I just realized I quoted the wrong person, whoops, corrected.
4x the power of the consloe? Damn i thought only 2x was needed

I can run the latest pokemon games(black 2) without lag at full speed on my laptop
Its only single core 3ghz processor but still, if it could be done for pc's then it will be done for phones, specially with 1.9 quad monsters like the gs4 coming this year

FYI... phones are just reaching toward the power of a Pentium m @ 2ghz CPU wise. PM does 7k+ MIPS and 3.9gflops @1.7ghz which it takes a quad in a phone to compete with and it still doesn't reach that. Can't compare your laptop to your phone as even a low end laptop is vastly more powerful than a high end phone. Your 3ghz single core pastes the quads of todays phones. I.e a POS pentium 4 @ 3ghz will avg 4.4gflops, while my quad exynos will avg 200-300mflops... accounting for dalvik lag I'd assume peak I'd see is 3gflops in ideal conditions which is still a fair way from even a Pentium 4. And then to even compare it to the core architecture is a joke because it will get beat every time. Arm wins hands down in performance/Watt though and I don't see that changing any time soon

gs4 emulation
I have the gs4 and it runs up to black and white 2 but extremely slow, ds emulation needs more work id say

[Q] "Despicable Me: Minion Rush" on Note II. Pain or gameplay?

Hi All
Just installed "Despicable Me: Minion Rush" the game from the Google Play.
I cannot run it smoothly. Everything is bad, the gameplay is just a pain.
Verified with stock 4.1.2 rooted with stock and Perseus kernels.
I just cannot believe or quad core 1.6GHz + more or less modern GPU cannot handle such a game.
Could anyone try and report your experience?
It doesn't stutter for me in the game while I have control but more like when I click "play" and then the little minion runs and jumps. In game it's responsive (mostly) but while clicking play or changing locations it's HORRIBLY laggy!
I used Asus tablet (Tegra 3 quad core) to run the game.
Same problems exactly.
People wrote reviews stating the old HTC Evo 3D can run "Despicable Me" with no problem at all. I will try to persuade my fem to install the game and make some tests on her Evo 3D.
Not a fine play but it's playable.
I'd say the graphics aren't optimized for our device.
It's funny cause even MC3 runs way better than Minion Rush...
Still, could be worse - I've had friends with iPad mini's, iPhone 5's, and gen 5 iPod touch's that are 'jumpy' (because it will skip a frame) with this game.
I'd get a good 23FPS on this game with Power Saving Mode On.
P.S.: It's probably Gameloft's (the devs') fault. I've seen HTC One's (2013 One) exhibit the same slow frame rate as my Note II.
Gameloft = crap optimization :silly::silly:
