[TOOL]RFS to EXT4 Conversion tool for compatible Kernels (CWM Flashable) - Galaxy Tab Android Development

I am not a Galaxy Tab owner but I was contacted by af974 to help provide a way of converting to EXT4 for Gingerbread. I am a developer mainly for the Epic 4G but with the similarities I figured I could help out and af974 asked me to post our solution.
This is a ClockworkMod flash-able .zip that simply converts /system /data and /cache from RFS to EXT4. It was originally by Dameon87 and modified for the Galaxy Tab by me. If you don't have an EXT4 compatible kernel then flashing this WILL soft-brick your device! This should work on any kernel that has EXT4 support. (not just Gingerbread)
THIS TOOL WILL FORMAT (ERASE) YOUR DEVICE. IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS THEN DO NOT FLASH IT!!! IT DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY BACKUP OR RESTORE FUNCTIONALITY.
Tested with this kernel by koxudaxi: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943669
Instructions:
ENSURE the new kernel supports EXT4 before begin!!!
1. Make a backup in ClockworkMod
2. Flash the TabEXT4Converter_v2.zip script
3. Flash custom kernel or flash rom
4. Restore backup (optional)
You can verify the conversion by typing 'mount' in terminal emulator or adb shell.
Download: http://devphone.org/files/galaxytab/TabEXT4Converter_v2.zip
If any one wants to donate a Tab I will be more than happy to develop a kernel for the users.

Thanks for your work Rodd.
Just to add some info, this was tested on my tab with koxudaxi kernel and it works like a charm.
Got over 3000 on quadrant score, pic is coming but what really impressed me is how it is smooth now with less less lag.Considering that kernel used is not at 100% i say that this is pretty awesome.

if you have questions if a kernel is compatible then you need to ask that kernel developer...i don't have a tab to test or time to pick apart every kernel to see how and if they implemented ext4

Yes it should work with the overcome kernel, as it includes ext4 modules in the kernel.

Thx !! Very good job !!

overclocking kernels will not work at the moment on overcome, be carefull....

Cannot boot
I was with the good kernel, flash the conver file, reboot, no reboot
I'm looking why at the moment.

How to check if the system is really in ext4 ?

Hello Guys!
This is my Custom ROM for the Galaxy Tab!
Its based on the european Firmware JME but i did the following changes:
- System and Framework completely deodexed
- System and Framework completely zipaligned
- Added Root and BusyBox
- LauncherPro as default Launcher
- build.prop Tweaks
- App Widget Picker
- Removed Maps and gMail (u can reinstall from market) more space on /system for the extra Apps
Thanks to this, you have now much more RAM available, and it runs pretty fast!
u can find the update in the attached files section
UPDATES:
1.1 - CAMERA FINALLY FIXED
1.0.1 - fixed missing camera app
1.0 - Release
Coming in further Releases (my plan ) when my bootloader gets unlocked:
- overclocking
- kernel optimisations
- custom theme
- EXT4
- Gingerbread???
apply the update by putting the files in the folder "updateX.X" (X.X stands for the version number and u need to create it) and then run the script via terminal emulator or adb shell (sh /sdcard/update/xxx_update.sh) xxx is replaced by version or update name
Currently known Bugs:
- camera app is missing but u can use camera apps from android market - fixed in newest release
THIS DOESN'T CONTAIN THE SIGNED BOOTLOADERS, just like Rotohammer's releases
it only contains a signed zImage but, as u know, u can revert this
Install with Heimdall or Odin, recommended from a JMx Firmware (JJx and JKx havnt been tested yet but u can try)
I'll update this rom, whenever there are bugs, stability issues and wishes from you!
|Download (Heimdall)|
Great. Downloading now. Will flash tomorrow.
Sounds great. But why add the signed zimage at all. Is there a way to load this without the zimage?
Can you install it with ODIN ?
Do you need a full wipe ?

i dont know exactly, but i think u need the newer kernel for JMx Releases! But u can try to flash only the factoryfs.rfs file inside the 7z archive, but i dont guarantee that it will work!

i can make an odin package tomorrow, if u want so!

[edit] never-mind. figured it out by following steps on here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878686
problem now is there isnt any arabic support in this rom. may hold back on flashing it.
Sod Odin and Haimdall. Any chance of an update.zip for flashing in recovery, given that we now have a usable, stable recovery (chainfire's).

Its better to leave like that because stock roms with custom kernel are laggy and stuff
Stewie just said that!
If I'm currently running the 2.16.531.3 (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211143) do I need to wipe data?
Happy to see a stock ROM again. Hoping this can give me the battery life that it should have.
Two issues: I keep getting android.process.media crashing - appears to stop when I receive a notification. Or go to change notification sounds / change volume from the Settings menu.
And two: I have a voicemail sitting there that doesn't exist. The icon won't go away either.

you can try to flash this over the 2.16.531.3 ROM, BUT make sure you nandroid backup, just in case something goes wrong
Warning!

DO NOT use 4EXT Recovery to convert the files system from EXT 3 to EXT 4.
You won't pass the splash screen.
Could you guys, who have flashed this, post these three files:

No overclocking with this stock ROM. If you want OC, check out Virtuous G-Lite. That's stock with OC capabilities. This is vanilla Gingerbread. And trackpad wake is not an option. At least not yet.

Euro stock 2.3.5 maybe...
I run vms 2.3.4 and flashed to test. And amazingly have found no problems yet. I encourage marvelc devs to check this out. I can't speak for ext4 support, but over clocking works perfectly and I haven't had any graphical issues yet. But I also haven't used Rosie. Anyways, thanks!

It runs perfect.....i have a question, in every overclocked kernel there is a big gap in the settings between 600mhz and 768mhz. Maybe the processor cannot make steps inbetween but it would be nice.
I am happy there is a oc kernel for stockbased roms. Keep up the good work!

I was told the euro build kernels wouldn't work on marvelc; so, I abandon my plan to build it from scratch and test. This report dispels that notion. Now, I can get down to business. Will try to include oc kernel as option to install for future builds [using this until I build up to it at least].

Yeah I tried this too and it didn't work. The Desire Z is compatible though so all you need to do is follow the guide further on down: just open up the zip, locate the script you want (e.g for 100MB in cache, open zip and go to swap/cache/100/etc/init.d/ and copy the 98swap_cache_v300 file out). Then copy it to system/etc/init.d and make sure the permissions are 755 and root.root.

Dear friend ... Maybe you made a mistake in :
1- Partitioning the ROM with Partitioning CLK ( use 280 MB system + 5MB cach )
2- Partitioning the SD card ... each of your EXT4s should be about 1-2GB ( Remember that it's better to use CWM Recovery for partitioning )
