[Q] What is the best way to root htc desire z? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I know that this was discussed many times.
but could you tell me what is the easiest/safer way to root/S-off htc desire z?
All posts I can find are quite old.
Thanks

Wiki method is considered by most here to be the safest.

If you want to be rooted, I'd stay away from any official updates. No official updates have been rootable for some time. And I think people that have updated to the official Gingerbread T-Mobile G2 ROM are having trouble even downgrading in order to root. There is a pre-rooted (but otherwise "official") G2 T-Mobile Gingerbread ROM posted in the Development section. If you want the Sense GB ROM, you should wait until a pre-rooted version is posted here. You would still need to root and gfree in order to flash either of those.

Thanks RedPoint. Going to hold off for now. I love the official gingerbread. I just want screenshot and over-clocking capability.

ROMs Rooting

Hello,
I'm planing to root my desire and update it to 2.2. I've searched a bit, and found that people are taking about different versions of roms for desire. Which version is best? Where to get it from?
If i want to have version 2.2 do i have to root my desire to unbranded android 2.1 and then simply download android 2.2 or root it using 2.2?
Thanks for the reply in advance.

hello,
i think i need to make myself a bit clearer.
Currently i have HTC Desire with Tmobile software which is unlocked (sim-free). I would like to have unbranded android 2.2. I read a bit and understand that i need to root my device first, then i can put the unbeanded rom, is that correct?
Now, there is a lot of roms available, so which one i should use? Should i use 2.1 or 2.2 rom? Where can i get it from?
Thanks,
Wooju

this is a rooted originial HTC 2.2 rom. It is good for the beginning. And look at the description.. u will have to install the new Radio(Firmware) first. U can find the link in the thread.
U will have to choose if u want HTC-Sense and A2SD(ext3) and choose one of the roms available. I think they are all with Android 2.2
If you want a unbranded custom ROM you need to root your phone first, but if you just want the 2.2 update and doesn't mind the branding, there is an official update from HTC available.
I would recommend rooting your phone with 'unrevoked', there are plenty tutorials in this forum.
Which ROM to use is up to you. I use DeFrost without the sense UI.
Thanks for the reply. I just want to make sure, i root my device first, then load radio and then custom ROM?
x01a4, i uderstand that unrevoked is the program used to root the phone?

Can I get stock Froyo on Telus Desire ??

Can I get stock Froyo rom on Telus Desire ?
I have already rooted 2.1 that's on it, if that makes a difference.
I have no interest in running a custom rom since the stock (2.2) one has everything I need...
I'm also wondering the same thing actually.
I've been looking into upgrading to this ROM, since it's claimed to be 'stock':
[ROM] Rooted Official HTC Android 2.2 (FroYo) ROM [Market issue fixed]
It won't let me post a link, but its in the Desire Android Development page
I think that's the one I found but it said you have to wipe...
I just want to upgrade and keep my existing data
use my tutorial here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=750888

I answered my own question.
Modaco (where I'm also premium) has more information on the subject... I rooted a week or so ago and modaco has the stock Froyo with radio and already rooted rom.
So I just downloaded that and applied update, I didn't even wipe before since I didn't want to lose my data.
Anyways problem solved.
also just picked up the desire , on rogers and was hoping to upgrade to 2.2, I had the hero before and it was a little more clear cut back then, but Im not sure to wait for official or just root and get stuff started,

[Q] Just asking.

Does the G2 have to be rooted in order to get Gingerbread?
No. It'll all over the android news when it is finally released for what phones and such. The g2 will get it for sure. Unless you root your phone and then get gingerbread from a custom rom.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 with Virtuous Sense.
There are likely to be custom ROMs with Gingerbread way before HTC officially releases it for our phones. And to have a custom ROM you'll need root and S-OFF.
But you can stay non-rooted and just wait for the official update if you like.

[Q] Newbie need Helping : upgrade rom for incredible 2

I am a new newbie in Android!! i hv just bought incredible 2, and unlocked it ( used code) to use GSM. Reading many thread in this forum and it made me confusing.
My incredible 2 got: Baseband : 20.23W.30.0803U_0.99.01.0225_2 and build number:1.34.605.4 CL341571.
. Which rom ( official or custom) i can upgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.3?? we using rom for US? how about the battery after upgrading? how to root it??
Thanks so much if u can advise me!!
first of all, this has nothing to do with development and is in the wrong forum.
looks like you managed to get a 2.2 froyo version. First thing I would do is use alpharevx to s-off your phone before letting it upgrade to 2.3 (if you let it OTA to 2.3 you'll lose the ability to root it)
after that, start reading up on the forums for roms... I would recommend RMK40's debloated gingerbread.

[Q] Can I upgrade my rooted Desire to Gingerbread 2.3?

The title basically says it all.
I'm wondering if I can upgrade my HTC desire to gingerbread 2.3, but still be able to add custom ROMs and all the other freedom you get with a rooted phone.
Thanks
You can flash a gingerbread custom rom, yes. Just look in the desire development forum.
No, what I mean is the new HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade was released couple months ago.
I'm currently on Android 2.2 Froyo, but I'm wanting to update to gingerbread 2.3, but at the same time I want to be able to install custom ROMS.
Flashing an official release will unroot your phone and replace your recovery. There are many custom roms based on this release that if you flash will not unroot your phone or replace your recovery like the RUU said.
So like I said in my last post..
You can flash a gingerbread custom rom, yes. Just look in the desire development forum.
All this information is a basic requirement to being rooted. I am surprised you don't know this.
Ah, I see. Thank you
And yeah, I'm noob
Everyone is at some point
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
