Restore settings after OTA update

Hello Guys,
I'm wondering if (and how) I can restore my settings (of the screens, scenes etc...), after updating the phone with an OTA update.
At first (re)start, it asked me to restore a backup, but I was not sure what kind of backup it meant, so I said no. Then I saw that my scene was factory default, instead of my own. So I started looking at a way to restore the backup... but I can't find such an option anywhere.
Is it possible to restore?

Try this Factory reset the phone and it'll ask you if want to do a backup first say no (as you don't want to backup a now reset phone) then after the factory reset when it asks if you wanna restore say yes

Won't I loose all my apps that way?

Yes, if you don't want to download them all again ull just have to live with doing all your homescreens and setting again

Once you have set your homescreens etc the way you want them get TitaniumBackup from the market and backup everything!
saves alot of hassle, and if your rooted you can also do a Nandroid backup and have everything just the way you left it on your phone

The aplis will download by themselves from market you just have to made home screen againg.

Any way to back up all of my apps before rooting for the first time??

I have already rooted my friends phone with the 1.47.651.1 ota update and everything went fine.
My only problem is I have a lot of apps I don't want to loose, paid ones as well. Is there anyway to back these all up?
Obviously I have no problem getting the free ones back but if I had to delete the paid one is it possible to get it back without paying again?

Don't quote me on this, but i believe i have read in a few places around the forums that say you can redownload paid apps without paying again.
Did you just get the phone / have to run any of the OTA updates? It might be possible that the original unrevoked method can let you use Titanium Backup to backup all your apps, then you can run a root + nand unlocker & just restore your apps.

correct, paid apps are tied to your gmail account, so as long as you use that gmail account then you can re download any app you paid for.

I agree with Veritas - Titanium Backup will be your best friend if you plan to root, flash ROMs and so forth.
I've been using Titanium Backup since I got my EVO and I love it. Very easy to backup all user apps/data to the SD card. Once a new ROM is flashed, install Titanium Backup (your license key is located on your SD card, so as long as you dont format that, you should be fine. You can copy that file to your PC as well for a backup). Once the new ROM is up and running, simply do a Titanium restore of all user apps/data. If it werent for Titanium Backup, I would not be flashing custom ROMs as often as I do.

This takes a while but you can backup apps with most of the file managers on the market without root access. All it backs up is the apk though. Just use it for the free ones. After you root then titanium backup is your best friend

Backing up befroe rooting

SO i finally decided to root my phone but i have a couple questions. my phone is pretty dam customized an di spent several hours doing it (ie- installed programs, have game save files, custom, desktops, ringtone, alerts, accounts, facebook contacts linked with gmail contacts...)
so first question- using backup pro or any other backup program if a backup is created once the phone is rooted can i run the restore to get all my programs and settings back?
also i know to root your phoen you need to overwrite the sd card. if i copy all my info off the sd card, can i copy it right back once the root is complete (ie- pics, game saves...)
anything esle i should know before rooting.
fyi- i have worked for several tyears as a windows,systems/network admin, so the technical part of rooting is not my question is the backup and recovery of the programs and settings and such

I am not an expert but maybe this answer can help.
As far as backing up and restoring, u should be fine with whatever program u use. Rooting just gives u super user access to the root directory, but doesn't actually overwrite anything that would prevent u from restoring programs u had backed up. Installing a custom rom however is more of re-writing of the underlying software, which then forces you to put a lot more effort back into restoring (i.e. home screen layout, widgets,...).
As far as your sd card, I didn't have to wipe or reformat mine when I rooted. In fact I am using the same card I had in my moto droid. I may have formatted to fat32 at one point back then, but I do not recall having to re-wipe when rooting my Dinc.

P.s. I also recommend switching to titanium backup once rooted. It is by far the best backup and restore utility out there. Also, u may want to post questions like this in the proper forum, not the dev forum. People tend to get peeved by improper posting.

I'll repost in the correct spot. dont wanna ruffle any feathers. ya know its just i put so much work into customizing the phone i dont want to have to redo it. but as long as i document what i have done i should be able to redo it all myslef if the backup fails. the program i use it mybackup pro btw

All the back up apps require root. Rooting will not delete any of your data. Root and do a nandroid

Not all backup apps require root, just the better ones. I like titanium because it will save your customizations as well as your apps.

I'm not a pro at this stuff but from my experience your worrying about stuff you really don't need to at this point. Rooting itself isn't gonna delete anything. It's just gonna give you more access to your phone. You still have the same radio, same hboot, and same OS version and kernel.
All I'm saying is download unrevoked3, root your phone, then first thing do a nandroid backup and boom your backed up. And after you boot it up download Titanium Backup and start backing up.

Not sure exactly what you're looking for, but if it's to transfer all the files from your sd card to your computer, wipe & format and then re-add, then it depends on your computer. I have a mac so I save a backup copy of my sd card on my desktop by mounting my phone as a disk drive when I plug it in, and then drag and drop all the files I want to save (or transfer to my phone). This will also transfer your backup files as well (assuming they are being saved to your sd card).
Eno is right though, you are getting ahead of yourself right now.
Root, do a nandroid backup, get titanium and then have fun with your newly rooted phone.

I have also been backing up my texts with SMS Backup. I haven't had any luck with just restoring data from titanium. But as they're saying, root is really the first step.

Every time I flash a new Rom I do sms backup and restore, call log backup and restore, and apn backup and restore. All of which are from the same dev. Call logs backup and restore is what you are looking for but an apn backup is always handy.

What + How do you backup before a full wipe?

Hey,
I've been on holiday and the new version of ARHD is out, but requires (well, recommends) a full wipe, but I'll take that recommendation considering how long it's been since a full wipe and my phone could probably do with it.
So my question is really, what should I backup before a full wipe, and how?
I've got app apks + data with titanium backup, and seo's sense3 sms can backup and restore texts (also I get them saved to gmail), but what else?

use the Titanium Backup app and back up all user applications with data and system data.
With this method you back up everything, what you can move to the new rom.

Also, you can "nandroid backup" from clockwork recovery just in case rom flashing fails.
Edit: which is not the case really with arhd. Only themes flashed wrong got me into bootloops

i usually do "adb pull /data/app C:/random_folder" and "adb pull /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf C:/random_folder/wpa_supplicant.conf". This copies all of your apps and your wifi networks to your harddrive.

This was also something I wondered about before I rooted.
First, if you are connected to your gmail account, all of your contacts, emails, sms, phone log etc will be synced by Google (backed up). Even better, if you are connected to htc sense, it will save all of your WiFi passwords!
Second, you won't be able to take backup of your apps and data without root, although Android market will try to restore every app that you have downloaded from it (still without data). Remember I said try, because it doesn't always work. Therefore I recommend that you use an app called "app list backup" by pun software
to make a list of them.
Third, make a note of all your home screen elements and where they are placed.
Fourth, download bookmark sort & backup by happydroid a to make a backup of your bookmarks.

Restore MyBackup Pro backups

Hi.
I come from an HTC Desire and I have some backups that I made with MyBackup Pro of some app's data. Relevant data like some games progresses, Libra's database, etc. MyBackupPro has an online backup and I backed the data online on the HTC Desire and tried to restore it in the Galaxy Nexus. The Galaxy Nexus recognizes the backup, shows the apps that are backed up, but when I press Restore it says that I should reboot the device and that the restore was OK almost instantaneously. Nothing is restored, no data is transferred to the phone..
Is there any other way to migrate this kind of data? Shouldn't MyBackup Pro be working on the Galaxy Nexus?

Maybe the app needs an update for ICS? Try to check their site to see if there's a reported problem, that's most likely the case.

Should have gone with Titanium Backup. I never had much luck with MyBackup anyway. Titanium is rock star on ICS.

The only problem Ive had so far has been restoring SMS with Pro.
Even with busy box installed its suuuper slow at the moment.

I sent them an email, I'll wait for an answer.. But I guess it is due to incompatibilities with ICS too..

Your signature says your Desire is rooted. Rooting the GN is easy. I go through 4 phones a year. I couldn't imagine doing that without Titanium.

Yes, the Desire is rooted, but I wasn't planning on rooting the GN so soon. I just got it 2 days ago and I want to see how this goes without any "hacks"..
I wouldn't have rooted the Desire in the first place if it wasn't for the lack of updates, etc... That's the main reason I bought the GN, having a more official support. Let's see, I'm almost sure that I'll root it in the future, but I don't want to do it right now.. I'll just wait for the Rerware answer to my email and see how it goes.

Rerware already answered, but no updates. Although I think I know what the problem is. I am only backup up app's Data, because they are already installed in the GN. But this is a "root only" feature and, for what I understood, non-rooted devices cannot restore this kind of backup, only APK backups. I asked this to the guys at Rerware to see if there is a workaround.
When I have news I'll post them here.

restoring your data/sms/backups is a "hack"

Hi,
Did you manage to find a solution to this problem? My phone is rooted and it still doesnt restore anything. Just like you said it finds the backup but then when you select the arrow next to apps to tick which ones you want to restore nothing is shown..
I need this to restore my game saves, spotify offline music etc

This happened to me with my sensation before. Somehow the backup got corrupted to I deleted it and started from scratch. Sorry to hear this happened to you it seriously sucks losing akk that stuff. What I've been doing is using from manager to restore my data partition and I've never had any issues SO FAR.
Enable advanced options, click restore and restore backup and only select the data.

I managed to solve the problem......
First my story:
I decided to install new ROM on my phone....i backed up apps and data with My Backup Pro (i bought the app)
My phone is rooted of course.
So i installed the new ROM and then i installed the My Backup Pro and started to restoring apps but i didn't get the app/data/app+data popup
and of course i couldn't restore my data from apps. i got really frustrated and browsed the web and couldn't find anything.
I started everything from the begining uninstalled all apps and figured it out that i did something wrong....and that is this that My Backup Pro doesn't work as it should without busy box...u have to install Busy Box before installing the My Backup Pro!
Follow this tutorial in order to restore your apps + data
Backing up apps on android (rooted) after installing new ROM
With My backup pro application
1. Backup apps + data
2. Backup dictionary
3. Backup all other data you want to
Install new ROM and then start restoring by this order
1. first install busy boxes i found there are two (BusyBox and BusyBox installer on the google store. install both)
2. install My backup pro and when asked to install additional options for rooted phone choose yes (now you should be able to choose between app/data/app+data to restore)
3. restore apps + data
4. thats it...enjoy!
