[Q] Will we need the Gtab USB adapter to more easily root/mod our tabs? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Accessories

Will the GTab USB Adapter make it easier to install custom roms? Just curious if I should invest the 20$ into buying one.

In a word..No. The USB adapter will only allow us to connect usb devices like external hard drives, thumb drives, cameras, keyboards, and mice to our Galaxy Tabs. In terms of rooting and modding, as long as you can connect the device to a computer, you will be able to root, mod, and flash.

Mini USB Accessories

I'm not very up on how USB works. Is it completely standard?
I was just wondering if there is a mini-usb full-sized keyboard or any other accessories that might work with the universal?
Do PDA's just need drivers and an interface and they can run anything like a PC? With the mini USB port on the Universal is it likely that any mini-usb accessory could work? I saw somewhere that it works with an IBM external HDD, would this also apply to the ZIP disks and stuff?
This is interesting BTW: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus
you can get cables which have mini usb in one end and any type of usb connector in the other
yes pda's require drivers just like pc's
but that may not be enough
if the pda dont support host mode it would be like trying to connect your
external harddisk with your usb mouse

Bummer
Oh well.
I'm quite happy if someone wants to delete this thread by the way.

[Q] [10.1][8.9][7.7]Multi Accesory Solution for Galaxy Tab

Hello Everyone,
As everyone know our beloved Galaxy Tab only have one port, that is used for HDMI, Charging, and USB functions.
I was wondering, is there some kind of adapter(s) that let me connect my tab to my HDMI TV, while accesing some USB memory stick and charging at the same time?
I'm looking forward for this solution because I want to connect an external hard drive to see some videos on my TV while charging the Tab.
In worst case, at least connect my tab to the TV and access the external USB hard drive.
Thanks in advanced.
The closest thing to a multiple accessory solution for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that I could find is this SD-card and USB adapter. I am also hunting for a something that will do HDMI/USB/SD card in one attachment.
I'm trying to build sleeker external storage by combining the official USB adapter with either a tiny 16GB flash drive or a tiny USB microSD card reader combined with a 16GB microSD card.
Has anyone used this combination, or something similar, with the 10.1?
I saw the Official HDMI adapter for galaxy tab 10.1 8.9 7.7 , it has an extra port for charging (in fact, it only works while charging) , if we could find a USB Hub that can charge the tab at the same time, maybe it could work.
If there's interest in a DIY solution I might be able to cook up a quick PCB that would fit in an Altoids tin to do it. I'd be glad to release it on BatchPCB (http://batchpcb.com) or package it up for a FusionPCB run at SeeedStudios as an open source design with a digikey/mouser/arrow BOM if there's a preference.

What is usb host otg?

and how is it different from MTP?
usb host on the go.
Means you can use an adapter to plugin controlpad/keyboard/etc..
-m
It has nothing to do with MTP.
Basically allows you use flash drives, mouses, keyboards on your phone with an adapter. Probably... microUSB to full-size USB.
USB On-The-Go, often abbreviated USB OTG, is a specification that allows USB devices such as digital audio players or mobile phones to act as a host allowing a USB flash drive, mouse, or keyboard to be attached.

oh... that's it? With all the ranting I read about the phone not supporting usb otg I was thinking it was something more important like not being able to transfer files easily.
Why would you want to hook up a keyboard to a phone?

Who knows? lol. the flash drive could come in handy though. It'd be expandable storage OR! if you have a ASUS transformer, you can hook the transformer dock with the Galaxy Nexus and you'd have a portable charger with you that can transform into a netbook or a tablet or just into a charging station
so, I could hook up a USB hub and connect a mouse and keyboard (USB screen ;-)?

One reason would be so you could type on it without using the on-screen keyboard. I have a bluetooth keyboard that I use with mine sometimes. If I added a bluetooth or USB mouse and MHL adapter to a monitor or TV, I'd basically have a complete usable computer.
In some cases it might be very useful, in others it might be more trouble than it's worth. Some people might like it, others might think it's stupid. Regardless of any of that, I think it's pretty cool that it can be done and that the lines between phone/tablet/laptop/desktop are becoming very blurry these days

[Q] USB peripherals

There doesn't seem to be much documentation on the USB port on the Fire TV, and I have a couple of questions regarding it.
1. The port seems to be powered, as I have seen people talk about stand alone drives. Is there anywhere that documents the actual power output in amps and volts? Is it the same as a standard USB port on a computer? I'd like to connect a splitter with a 1TB WD drive and a wireless mouse/keyboard combination, but I don't really want to buy a powered hub.
2. Is there a proper shutdown procedure for the USB port so as not to fry it? I had a motherboard go bad on a computer many years ago because I would remove a wireless mouse without properly disconnecting it. I would hate to do that to the only port on this piece of equipment.
Thanks

Can't Get Mirco to USB OTG to work

Hey Guys,
I recently bought a Micro to USB OTG cable but unfortunately can't get it to work on my new S Tab(10.5).
I am able to get it to work on my Galaxy S3 phone and old Nexus 7 tab so it appears that the cable works fine. My S Tab is not rooted and currently does have the latest updates. I also ran the OTG checker which verifies that my tablet has the necessary files. When I run the OTG troubleshooter tho it does not appear to be picking up my cable at all.
I originally bought this to use my wired 360 controller on my tablet, the 360 controller and flash memory sticks are the only things I have tested on the cable itself. Like I said above, my S3 and Nexus 7 picks up these 2 devices just fine through the cable.
Anything that I am missing? Any tips/quirks to get this to work?
Thanks so much for your time/help!
P.S. attempted to post link to my exact cable but couldn't because I am a new member.
Are you willing to have device root and flash a custom kernel?
If yes, then my SkyHigh kernel does support OTG and has in-built XPAD (XBOX) controller module and confirmed working by another user. Some games may require you to map the controller with a certain app, some without.
FS support is dependent on kernel. If you are trying to mount NTFS r/w, then you will need to also install Paragon app or navigate to /mnt/ntfs/.... for kernel NTFS r/o
It's possible that it could be your cable. I had problems a couple years ago with an otg cable not working on my Note 2 but working in a couple older devices. It turns out it was because the micro usb end that plugs into the phone was too short to plug in all the way. I'm not sure if it's a new standard or something, but my Note 2, Note 8, S5 and Tab S all seem to have a cable with a longer micro usb tip than any of my previous devices have.
Hold the otg cable next to the charge cable that came with your Tab S and see if the tip of the otg cable is a couple of millimetres shorter. Also plug the charge cable into the tab and notice the way it kind of "clicks" into place when you push it in the last little bit. Now plug in the otg cable and see if it has the same "click" feel. If not, then I'd bet it's your cable. I have an otg cable that specifically states that it's for an S5 and it works perfectly on all the devices mentioned above. I also have a generic otg cable that works on my old galaxy nexus but doesn't work on any of the above devices.
Here's the old thread in case that helps:

Thanks for the reply's.
I don't really want to go down the Root road because I have never gone through that process and don't feel comfortable with it at this time.
The cable Micro pin portion definitely doesn't fit as snug as the S Tab charger. The OTG cable actually appears to be longer than my S Tab charger Mirco pin. When plugged in you can tell it sticks out a smidge....The thing with that though, it does the same exact thing on my other 2 devices that work with the cable.
Guess it could be the cable, just hate to send this back and order another and be in the same boat.

Cable or no cable, if you wish XPAD controller, then you'll need the kernel or loadable kernel compiled module. Other features (some I described) also require kernel. ... all requiring root.
Since you've ruled that out, you just need to forget many features that are available with some other devices and move on.
Best of luck.
