Background:
I've tested two car chargers to get the Atrix to POSITIVELY CHARGE while using Google Navigation and so far I've failed. In all cases, both by itself and on the official car cradle, I started at 100%, the battery slowly holds its charge for the first 20 or so mins, and then it just takes a nose dive. The longest trip I've been on is 5 hrs, where on the last 30 mins, the phone just shut off, battery at 0% and unable to run Google Nav or itself.
Are there any car chargers out there capable of charging the Atrix while in use by Google Nav/Pandora/Something Resource Hungry?
Is it a FACT that once the battery reaches a certain temp, it will stop charging no matter what, no matter what the power input is (500-1000mA)?
Can the official car dock (Moto or AT&T branded) support more than 500mA since it's treated as a USB connection?
The car chargers I've tested are the Moto SPN5400 and Belkin F8Z445ttP. I've read the Belkin, while rated at 1000mA, only comes through with 500mA because the Atrix treats it as a USB connection.
fact: I run google navigation on the car charger and it either slowly charges or seems to stay at the battery percentage. I also have the 1% mod so I can see the subtle charging

What car charger are you using and its rated power output?
I use a SYBA SY-IPO20010 USB Car Charger its rated power output 600-700mA and the atrix sees it as a wall charger (i know this because i can boot into tanfar's cwm using it). it charges my phone slightly slower than the wall charger when used without the cardock. However when used with the cardock charging times are alot slower.

I'm going to assume you mean model SJ1444A. How long is the included cable? I would hopefully assume it is longer than the USB cable that comes with the Atrix itself, but I wanted to make sure. I could not find this information on any product Web sites.

I use an energizer charger, that comes with interchangeable ends and have never seen the charge be lower than when i started. That's with pandora, nav, etc.
forget exactly which one, but i bought it when i had my aria, and it was listed for HTC devices.
I used the Moto SPN5400 ($4 on amazon prime) and mine definitely charges still while using navi, albeit slower of course.
I use this (http://cgi.ebay.com/Motorola-Atrix-...317163?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item33683f64eb) with the car dock and stock car dock cable. I've had navigation and poweramp running and it will never go down in percent. Only up.
Even the crappiest of car chargers will charge, but when using a resource hungry app like you mentioned your mileage may vary (pun intended?).
I've found heat to play a big factor too. I learned this the hard way when my Atrix was scorching and I was in the US ripping home to make a deadline. GPS and Google Nav killed the battery to the point where it kept restarting. So I let it charge while turned off for a while and had enough juice to make it home and use GPS navigation. Whew! So scary because I didn't know where the hell I was and would have been screwed if I didn't get home on time.
I always try staying charged ahead of time or make sure there's a good buffer. Hopefully someone can share which charger is a better one out there. The one I use is for use with an iPhone and is just a cheap USB charger.

The most I've used the GPS it is for about 2.5 hours without noticing any problem whatsoever. In fact, once I unplug the Atrix, it shows 100% charge.
However here's what I think it's happening to some: If your Atrix is mounted on the screen, the Atrix will receive a huge amount of UV light (heat) even on cloudy days, maybe overheating the battery, thus preventing it to get a charge? Could that be possible?

Yes. Excess heat prevents charging. I have posted screenshots on one of the other threads showing this.

I was going to call AT&T today and ask them to send me a new car dock because I thought mine was defective. I'm glad I checked here. I've tried about 4 different car/USB chargers along with my car dock and none seem to charge it when I'm using Google Nav. I'm currently using the Kensington K33497US PowerBolt Duo. It has a 2.1 Amp side which I felt sure would change the phone...nope.

I've come to the same conclusion as well. The excessive heat really does prevent it from charging. I went on the same road trip to the US as before and even driving in the early morning or late night when it was relatively chilly, the phone still got too hot to charge.
I went down to about 60% charge from 100% charge using just an offline GPS navigation program. Using Google Nav drains it a little more because of the data usage. Kind of a bummer. I always make sure to go on a full charge because having no GPS in a foreign place is a bit freaky.

Here's something I've done to help the heat. If you have the dock mounted on your windshield, set your vents to come out through the defrost. This will blow cold A/C onto the windshield and dock and helps the phone remain reasonably cool.

I had mine mounted on the dash but moved it to the windshield as well. I normally have the windshield vent on blowing cool air anyway and I'm sure it helped.
During my previous trip I was down to around 40% at times (from a full charge). Using the offline GPS nav helped too. Some programs even allow you to change the GPS intervals but it's something I wouldn't toy with. I'd rather have accurate GPS and sacrifice battery life.
Still a bit of a bummer. Wish there were more ways to curb the excessive heat.
I wonder if it would make a difference if I took the back of the phone off when it was in the dock. I already have to take it out of the case to put it in the dock, it wouldn't be any problem to take the back off at the same time. It might help air move across the battery better....one less thing holding heat in.

I don't think it'd make an appreciable difference.
Maybe if you have a cooler in the vehicle when you're on a long trip you can lay it on that for a bit. But then you'd need to worry about water damage and condensation... bleh...
UV light wouldn't really be the cause of excess heat, IR light would be more the culprit... which is present in sunlight also.

I bought this kit from e-bay and just got it in today, so have been trying it out on my drive from home <-> work.
The problem is, the car charger they supplied doesn't seem to be sufficient to charge the phone or at least keep its battery at a constant state when I'm using it as a GPS + Streaming music. On my drive home, I started at about 50% battery life. An hour or so later, I was down to about 35ish with it plugged in nearly the entire time. So clearly it's not pumping enough juice to the device
I was thinking of buying one of these from monoprice but I wanted to make sure it really would give me enough power. Obviously the power isn't that big of an issue, but I don't want to wait for it to ship only to find out that it doesn't help anyways.
Anyone tried the monoprice one I linked to, or one of the other ones from there? Or can suggest one to buy from elsewhere? Would greatly appreciate it, thank you!

I should mention, I have a car charger uhh splitter thing...to split the one socket into two (one for an FM transmitter, and one for the phone). Could this be a limiting factor in how much power I'm getting to the phone as well? Or should the single socket have enough power for both devices?
I got a Kensington PowerBolt from Future Shop which claims to be 2.1 amps and I still drained the battery a bit when testing the nav. Possibly not as much as you but there is still a net loss. If the charger is accurate in its power then I presume my car isn't delivering enough power.
Any car charger that supports the ipad should be well above 1.0a. Whether it delivers that is a question I cannot answer.
Im going to test direct power charging while having the nav on to see if this thing can ever charge positive while in nav mode. I wonder if that has ever been done.

They are a little more prevalent thanks to the ipads higher power requirements for charging.
Future Shop has a few of them available now if you want. A little expensive though at $30+. I don't see the PowerBolt anymore which is too bad since that was a slim model that barely poked out of the socket.

But to the OP - a 1amp charger is not going to fix your problem in most cases. You need a cable with the data pins shorted so that the phone thinks it is pulling power from something other then a USB port.
A USB port only supplies 500mA - the phone will draw a max of about 750mA; but only if it thinks it is not attached to a PC. The wall charger shorts the data connection so the phone knows to pull more current.
I purchased a dual port (1A per port) charger at target or walmart, and then a took a USB cable and cut open the cable and shorted the data wires (not red or white - but the other 2). My phone says it is charging on AC power and charging keeps up with GPS.
It is possible that you could buy a car charger with the cable built in and the circuitry set to tell the phone to draw more then the USB 500mA, but I am not sure.
But know this; if the phone does not say "AC Charging" under settings->phone-> about - like it does when the wall charger is in use; then you are only getting 500mA.
I use a 2 amp 12v to usb adapter that is use for my ecig passthrough. Charges with bluetooth, streaming music, and navigation all running but charges slowly. Something like $8 on madvapes.com

You're going to need to strip a cable so so that you can get to the individual wires for each pin. You want to short pins 2 and 3 together which are Data- and Data+. Normally that is WHITE and GREEN

I thought there might be a limit on how much current you can provide at any one time.
On the original subject: I've started using a different car charger, and now have it plugged directly into the socket in my car. This results in it showing up as being charged by AC power in the settings -> phone status. However, it still loses power over time instead of keeping at the same charge or (ideally) charging the phone slowly.
I'm going to see if I can get my hands on that 2A charger and modify a cable, and see what happens then.
If anyone would like to see if the same thing happens to them, the main applications I have running are:
Google Navigation
TuneIn Radio (streaming from one of the DI.FM stations, and outputting audio to the headphone jack to my car)
I have 3g and GPS on, wifi off, brightness set to auto (have also tried with it set to the lowest it goes and the highest it goes, doesn't seem to make a substantial difference. Or even if it does, there is still a net loss in battery charge.)
It's on stock rogers rom, rooted, with no lag fix. And uhhh, that's all I can think of that would be relevant.
I've got an New Trent IMP1000, which is an 11.1Ah battery pack. It can output a max of 1A, but the phone doesn't see it as an AC charger, so it only draws .5A. If I short out the two pins so that it draws more power, how will the battery life of the battery pack be? Meaning how many phone charges will I get out of it? Will it be shorter, longer, or not have an impact?

You should still get the same number of "phone charges" out from the pack...they'll just be quicker charges afaik. i.e. if the pack took 4 hours to do a full phone charge before, it may only take 2 hours now. The same amount of power is used up each time though.

my atrix is running 1.5.7 update and is rooted...
phone starts at around 90-100%
when i dock the phone the car app starts no problem, battery shows as charging also...
i click on default location button, and it brings my google maps and then asks for destination, i select one from my stared places and click on directions... it brings up the time/distance, and turn by turn text directions... (still shows as charging)
i then click on the navigation button and it opens up google navigator and gives driections (still shows as charging)
after lets say a 1-2 hrs trip, i exit out of the programs using the back button all the way to the default dock screen, then undock the phone, all the time the charging indicator is showing on the phone... when undocked the phone temp reads around 115-120F... the outside temp was around 70ish, and i still had the AC running in the car (i like it cold), and the battery % shows around 40-50%???
i have never had a car dock not actually charge the phone while plugged in... are all the clicks actually opening multiple programs and the processor drawing that much power that the charger just cant handle it? and why oh why is it getting that hot?
not the whole phone, or even the battery, just the bottom portion of the phones where the sim and sd card would go....
to test this theory on other trips, when the car app opens i close it (while docked) and browse directly to the navigation app, open it and set starting and ending points and drive... same length of trips, same weather and temp conditions, the battery charging indicator still shws as charging...
when i exit and undock, the temp is still getting up to the 120F mark, but it is actaully fully charged when i reach my destination...
i can be the only one, can i?
*note i have the dock and charger bought directly in the motorola packaging with the usb power adapter included, not the one in the ATT box w/o usb power adapter
should that tell me something? did att know the motorola adapter couldnt handle it, so it didnt include it, thus giving them an out when complaints started bout losing power? we must be using a bad usb adapter?
maybe its something to do with the special usb/audio cord? i know when i plug the special cord into the usb power connector directly intothe phone, the phone doesnt register it... maybe i should try a reg usb cord to the dock? i dont have an aux port so i would never use the audio cord, at least not in my car...

I've got the car dock as well, and use the included usb/audio cable to charge.
I have not noticed the battery drain you speak of. And i'm running navigation + power amp on my trips.
The battery charges, but slowly (500mA on the usb). I have not lost charge nor has my phone gone over 120F/48C.
Do you have some other cpu intensive program running in the background? You can check the battery status to see whats been using the battery the most.

I used to have the same situation with my milestone, if I used gps and had the car charger it would slowly drain. I just chalked it up to the fact that the gps, screen and processing power required equaled more then what the charger was giving.
I have not noticed the drain as bad with the atrix but my new work truck also has an usb port that outputs up to 2.1 amps.
I have experienced exactly what you are talking about. I do a lot of long drives, and have had the phone on the verge of death by the time I reached my destination.
My solution: I used to have the dock attached to my windshield on the left side of my car; I now have the dock attached to the drivers side window, right in front of my a/c vent. The phone never reaches 80° now, and actually completely charges my phone.
The drawback: I can't roll down my window at the spur of the moment.

I'm doing a paste of my other post just to inject some data onto this thread. I hope you find this of use.
I believe that there is an issue with charging performance in the Atrix car dock. I'm using the OEM Motorola ECOMOTO Rapid Rate vehicle power adapter (850 mAH) with dual USB ports. You can tell this USB charger is a good product just by the weight of the thing! A test charge in the Atrix car dock began at 7:45 AM and the phone's charge was 20%. At 9 AM 30% and 10:30 AM 40%. This is obviously nothing like the wall charger so it made me believe that the phone was powered by the charger while docked but only receiving a trickle charge. Connecting the phone directly to the USB car charger (without the car dock) using a stock USB to micro USB charging cable, at 8:00 AM the phone was at 20%, 8:20 AM 40%, 9:00 AM 70% and 10:00 AM 100%. What a contrast!! So it appears that there is an issue with charging performance while in the car dock. I've reported this to Motorola and hope that they can reproduce and address.

i have 3 usb car chargers and they all have different charge rates on my atrix. two of them would slowly drain with gps and maps on, the other ones charges the phone well even in use. i think that one is rated for around 700mah output. sounds like teh car dock is only putting out 500mah or less. thats kinda lame for an official motorola product that cost $60.
Knowing about the trickle charge bug while docked, I sat in my car today and browsed the web. When I was done the Atrix was at 30%. So the phone wasn't even being powered, let alone charged while being docked. I will continue to call Motorola to report this issue until I get a tech who is able to provide some two way communication in the issue. I digest everyone else do the same please.

Mine works fine - I am using the Moto branded dock and bundled charger (not AT&T).
Keep in mind it is easily possible to discharge faster then charge - this is true of ALL smart phones. If you are using Data, GPS, screen, and a bunch of apps, you can use more power then the charger supplies.
This is NOT a bad thing. The phone has circuitry that limits charging rate to make sure the battery is not damaged. You can't always charge faster then discharge, and if the phone gets very hot (sitting in the sun) then the charging rate may be throttled back.
If my phone is in the dock, doing NAV with push email in the back, it charges faster then it discharges.
Not sure if you read my notes on test charge cycles. The car dock is an issue.

I spoke with Motorola Support today regarding the care dock charging issue and there response was "we have escalated to the engineering department but do not have any feedback at this time."
I purchased the car charger from Verizon.. It also has an additional usb plugin slot on top of the charger so 2 things can charge at the same time..
It works great and I don't see the discharge issue.. The phone is warm when I take if off but not bad even after 2hr ride..
my experience as well.
I have run into it as well, but I admit that I run with trapster, 3 email accounts and slacker running most of the time. But this isn't the first device I have done this with. And I have had similar problems with them. I am just disappointed that Moto designed such a set up, and did not anticipate this kind of use and given us enough amps!
I wonder about maybe plugging it into one of those 1.2A usb iphone chargers.....

If you charge in yiur car with a stock usb to micro usb cable without the dock, the charge speed is like the wall charger. There is a problem. I've measured this and reported to Motorola.

This kind of happens with my multimedia dock - When using it in webtop mode, it will charge for about 10 or so percent, then it starts to drain, even though everything shows that it is still charging. Im using the power adapter that came with the dock and its plugged into the wall.
I see this from time to time as well, but not always. I am using a 1000ma charger in my car, and sometimes I find the battery drained at the end of a drive. My program use is almost always the same (google maps, trapster, music player)

This is, from my experience, absolutely the correct answer. When your battery temp gets too high, it will stop charging as a safety precaution. Once it stops, it doesn't seem to start back up until the temp goes back down. But if you are running navi/trapster/email/etc., it's not going to cool down on its own. Putting in front of an AC vent is the best solution. I like Gator's creative approach of using his side window. I still keep my dock mounted to the windshield, but what I do is run my AC through my defroster setting, so the cool air is coming out onto the windshield and on my feet. For a long drive it still keeps the ambiant temp comfortable, and provides a flow of cool air to the back side of the phone and dock.

I'm buying the explanation.... I really am.
(pause for effect) ... but I tested with everything disabled... gps BT data sync,etc. It would not charge more than 10% per hour in the car dock. The exact same test 24s later connected with a stock USB to micro USB cable in th car and the result was astounding. 40% per hour from what I remember. (Test results posted earlier in this thread)
So why is it getting so hot in the dock with nothing running? Mine is in the top corner of the windshield.

I do agree that it seems to charge VERY SLOWLY when docked. I was only commenting on the question about it stopping it's charge, and my thoughts about temp being the culprit. I'm wondering if the docking programs are chewing up RAM or something, causing it to charge very slowly??? Something about the doc is causing a slow charge.
Hey guys I have created 2 different pocket solar chargers that are the most powerful on the market currently. I call them the "Pocket Panels"
One is a 6w 1.2 Amp USB solar charger that actually provides enough power to rapid charge all the new Android smart phones that usually require 1 to 1.2 amps of power to rapid charge the large batteries that the new power hungry droid phones have. Most solar chargers are way underpowered and simply waste time basically only give you a few mins of extra run time vs actually charging your phone like a rapid AC charger that produces 1 amp.
Most car cigarette lighter adapters only provide .5 amps which take double the time to recharge compared to a 1 Amp USB charger.
My Droid X has a 1.5 Amp Hour Battery so this Pocket Panel can recharge it from 0% full to 100% full in 1.5 hours in good sunlight. Other chargers on the market would take about 2+ hours to do the same thing.

I also just had a 2 Amp pocket solar charging panel created to recharge the new Droid Tablets that require 2 Amps of power via their USB charging ports. To my knowledge there is not a single 2 Amp pocket sized solar charger on the market made specifically for the Droid tablets.

I would like to get some feedback from people about what they think about these panels that I had created to better serve my own needs. All the portable solar chargers I had bought and tried were all under powered and I could not charge and stream live net music while I was outside working all summer. The phone would always die while I was listening to music. I would stream music all day and then listen to it on my JamBox. Now I can go all day long when the sun is out and that makes me happy! Took a lot of time and work to make this happen though.
Pretty nifty - I like the camouflage, it gives it a military grade look Are you able to use different adapter prongs too?

I think it is a great idea. Where are you located I am in south east Tennessee and would love to check one out first before investing the money. I just ordered a Asus Transformer Prime and that would be a great little accessory to have for it. Will the 2 amp model also charge my droid x? I am just making sure it will be compatible with both my devices at the same time.

Yes you can plug any regular USB cord into the panel and then plug the other end into your device to begin charging it. Just point the solar panel directly towards the sun for best results. If the sun is directly overhead lay the panel flat since the sun rays are coming directly downward. If the sun is off at an angle tilt the panel up against something for the maximum power output and quickest solar recharging.

Yes its a 5 Amp Hour backup battery that you can plug into the solar panel and recharge the battery. Then you can take the battery later and charge other devices directly off the battery which is good if you do not want to leave your phone outside all day. Its always most efficient to charge your devices directly off the solar panel though. You only get about 70% of the power you put into the battery back out of the battery because of internal voltage conversion that goes on inside the battery.

Being able to recharge your phone or other USB devices like GSP units or GSP apps on your phone while off grid which might work even if you do not have cell reception if the maps on are stored on your phone.

Yes you can also charge your Droid X with this larger panel also, the phone will only pull in the power it needs to charge.

Most older USB chargers only provide 500mAh of power and that's less than half the power the 6w small panel produces in good sunlight. The new phones come with .5 Amp chargers or 1 amp chargers.
The new smart phones pull 1Amp or more power when you start charging them and the battery is dead or near empty. As the battery charges the phones ramp down the input current automatically until the battery is fully charged. If your activly using the phone while charging the phone will pull enough power from the panel to cover its current actions + try to charge the battery at the same time and this is where you really get to use the extra power that these panels can produce, you can actually stream music outside, play it via the speaker on full blast, and charge the phone at the same time which is something you can not do with panels that can not produce 1 Amp of power.

Very nice. I was just discussing with some people the other day the lack of effective solar chargers for portable devices right now. Built quality seems great. Once you get everything streamlined having it available in simple black would be something to look at. Awesome for people who spend time away from readily available power sources like hikers, climbers, back country snowboarders/skiers, etc.

The 12w 2 Amp panels are out of stock for a few months but we have found some y cables that will allow us to combine the output of 2 6w panels for a 12w 2.4 Amp max USB output which is actually more powerful than the 12w 2 Amp panel because the 12w panel USB circuit was actually limited on its output to 2 Amps which is 10 Watts even though the solar panel is 12 watts.
So the 2 6w panels combined is really a better solution than just 1 6w panel because you can get more power out of both panels at one time, and when you do not need both panels you can use the 6w panels separately as need also.
When the Y cables arrive I'll throw up some pictures for everybody.

New to the Nexus, recently purchased from the Play store. On my commute I generally am running Waze (or google navigation) and Audible with screen on auto brightness. With these running I get a slow drain. With these running on my old iPhone 4s, I would get a slow charge (unless it got hot, then it drained). I am using the same charger (capable of enough power to charge a iPad) I guess I am worried about long trips, don't want to show up with an almost dead phone...
I did flash jelly bean last night, still a slow drain this morning on the way in.
Is this just the nature of the phone?

the reason your nexus is still draining with your car charger is that it's only recognized as a 500mah usb, look at charging state in the settings and it will say USB. you can either mod a micro usb wire or the car charger buy connecting the two middle D pins. with this mod your nexus will recognize as AC charger that you can see in the settings.

i have the 5 dollar moto charger and it does really charge at 700mah, enough to charge while using maps, but the blue led is super bright and covers the entire circle. its very annoying at least for me to have a light that bright at night.

I know there are kernels that allow for "fast charging,"but I don't know that there are any working with 4.1.1 yet

You saying just short the two middle pins together?
Edit; or better yet, is there a standard color code to the wiring? Will open the cable and tie them together in the middle... guess I could ohm them out as well

USB 2.0 ports are only designed to output 500mA. If you value your ports I wouldn't.
It is alway important to notice that, no charger will be able to keep the battery level or at least charge it a little bit if temperature is high and phone is hot... This is just the way Li Ion batteries are, their efficiency decreases exponentially when temperature is higher... So, sometimes charger is not the one to blame, but, the climate/sun shinning over the phone + screen on + 3G/4G + GPS = a phone that is smoking hot and a battery working in adverse conditions...
They're work ports so I wouldn't mind too much.
The truth is I don't really mind, because it does charge the phone, regardless of what I do. However, it does so slowly, and I was used to the fast charging of the iPhone. However, I've also +1 the Motorola charger in the car, it's a lifesaver. My battery never dies down in the car.

i've never modded my wires so im not sure if they are color coded. for the chargers though i didnt even use any solder just open up the casing and i just bent the two D pins on the usb adapter that were soldered to the board so that they touch. but yah thats the basic idea just connect those two lines somehow and your phone will recognize the charger as AC.

Working just fine for me, but it is a little bit cold in Brazil (about 58F, the higher the temperature, higher the battery temperature and higher the chances that battery efficiency is down the drain and/or phone just stop charging battery to avoid battery hitting dangerous temperature thresholds where it starts to degrade permanently and if temperature keep increasing, it might even explode).

I did a Palm Pre wireless charging mod on my nexus and HAVE to use a kernel with fast charge settings to get AC. Regardless of cables/chargers/whatever. Most kernels support it, and most popular kernels are running good on JB. My flavor is Trinity

Interesting thanks for all the info about USB charging. Does the pogo car dock charge as AC or USB? My real question is will I experience battery drain in regular conditions (the phone isn't on fire so the battery is still relatively efficient) running nav + music + random?

I have a dual car charger that I used for my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, now when I plug the Nexus 5 it charges fine, but if I use maps or Waze it does not give enough power to charge it and keep the Nexus running, I actually see a slow power drain on the battery, example this morning on the way to work I plugged the Nexus 5 and it was at 87% charged, I turned on GPS and waze a started my drive to work about 45 minutes later arrived at work and the power was at 83%, small drop but it tells me the charge cant keep up, anyone recommend a good charge to use in the car that can charge as I use GPS maps etc ?

I have been using this charger for a long time. It charges fast enough where even if you are using GPS you will still gain battery %. Mine has lasted at least 2 years and never had a problem.

I have been contemplating using a wireless charger for my car.

I don't mind plugging in my phone into a wired charger at night but thought it would be cool to have a wireless one right underneath the radio receiver in my car. That way I don't have to bother plugging it in when I get in the car and can just lay it where I normally do anyways while getting a charge.
That one only measures 3.6" x 3.6" so it would be perfect.
Am I the only one?
I've got the same issue with my Anker charger, which is a 2A charger and worked brilliantly with my galaxy note 2. I also checked it with my friend's s4 and the galaxy charge current app, his s4 pulled 1.5A from it so I have no idea why the nexus 5 doesn't charge properly using it.

A couple of things to look at first before you throw your charger out with the bathwater. When you charge, does the settings -> battery screen say charging (AC) or charging (USB)? It is my understanding that "USB" charging is supplied at a lower rate (~500maH) which is less than GPS, screen on and Waze may consume. Charging (AC) is much higher aka "fast charging". If you use a data USB cable on DC, Android phones have been known to default to the lower USB charging level. I had the same in-car battery drain problem on my N4 and switched to a power only cable and it solved the problem, YMMV. You can modify a data usb cable by shorting pins or you can buy a power only USB cable. Search amazon for PortaPow and it should pop up.

I don't mind plugging in my phone into a wired charger at night but thought it would be cool to have a wireless one right underneath the radio receiver in my car. That way I don't have to bother plugging it in when I get in the car and can just lay it where I normally do anyways while getting a charge.
That one only measures 3.6" x 3.6" so it would be perfect.

I've seen car mods where the some guys placed it under the change slot, the slot right in front of the shifter that also has a cigg lighter adaptor aka 12V adaptor. Also where they've placed it directly under the cup holder. I'm thinking of getting a DT900 and wiring it under the change slot and have it just sitting in there.

I've been in contact with Anker support over this. After them telling me the phone must be using over 2A and that's why it's not charging while plugged in to the Anker charger and me dismissing that as the stock AC charger is 1.2A and works fine, I got this reply:
I heard from other customers that there is special design with Nexus 5 phone. Anyway, I will forward your problem to our engineer to further investigation and testing. Thanks for your understanding in advance.

Anyway after reading a few of the newer comments here I decided to check whether it was being detected as AC charging or USB charging, which would explain the issue, but the phone reported AC so I have no idea why it won't charge properly. Probably something LG/Google implemented to prevent overheating.

Funnily enough, ordering this from the US amazon site with shipping to the UK is still cheaper than buying it from the UK amazon site (or seemingly anywhere else in the UK.)

And one more vote for this charger. I have been using it for over a year and it works great with all the phones I've had, including the Nexus 5. I also use Waze and stream Spotify while in the car, and a good charger (like this one) will always leave you with a positive battery %.

I purchased a 5$ usb charger at walgreens about a year ago. I've been using it with a generic micro usb cord for both my galaxy nexus and now with my Nexus 5 with no issues.

I'm in the UK and use a New Trent Arcadia charger (Amazon link) in the car, which did a good job with my previous phone, a Galaxy S3. I have not really used the charger with navigation in anger, just some short trips to test, and what I've found is that Waze seems to need a fair bit more power than Maps - as with the OP the battery level is still decreasing, albeit more slowly, while navigating with Waze. My charger appears to keep up with Maps, though.
With the S3, I did find that the charger did charge the battery more slowly when navigating with Waze than when navigating using Google Maps as well.
Shame, because for some journeys I actually prefer to use Waze.
With that in mind, though, I think the New Trent is a decent choice.

+1 i too have the same one...I got it from fommy and I just love it...it works well both with my N3 and N5....

Had the same issue. You just have to enable the fast charge option in f.e. Trickster. After enabling this option your phone will be charged even when using a gps navi etc.
