Cell standby - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been better monitoring my batterylife today to see if I can get by on a normal work day or if I'll need an exteded battery (ever since getting the phone its been dying very quickly, because I've been playing games on it). So far, it's been going all day and will definetly reach the 10 hour mark with web browsing and texting. However I do 1 concern, 30% of my battery life has been used up by 'Cell Standby'. Is this normal? I had an extended battery on my g1, so I never had to worry about battery life too much, and don't know how much cell standby took up on it. I'm just suprised that it takes up more than "android System" or anything else on my phone.
Htc G2 on At&t with cyanogen 7.0.3 clocked at ~800mghz
(Could it be because its on the att network?)
Update- just to give you a grasp of my battery usage for the day:
was not put in charger all day
currently at 10%
been on for 13h and 56m

cell stanby 31%
Phone Idle 22%
wifi 19%

Much better battery life

Anyone else seeing much better battery life after the 2.2 update?
Mine seems a world better
Yeh mine lasts almost 3 times longer
I'm still testing mine before commenting about this. When i give my findings i'll also put a summary of how i am using the phone, sync frequency, useage etc.
I'll let you know later tonight but so far seems about the same for me.
I think so as well, but it could be a placebo effect from the awesomeness of 2.2.
So far it seems worse. More to follow as I track this for a bit lomger, but my phone has been on for 12 hours and the battery is down to 45% with 40% of the usage attributed to Cell Standby and 37% of usage attributed to Phone Idle. With Eclaire, I would still have had 70% - 75% life left on the battery with that much standby and idle time.

mine seems to as well
just left on with a few background apps syncing I could see the battery drain but about 20-30% in 4-5 hours. Today it's still in the 90% range
How long does it take your battery to be fully loaded?
My Desire told me that the battery is at 9 % and it took maybe about 3 hours to reach 100 %.
Loading it while it was in Stand-by.
much better for me. no doubt about it.
Yep 100% to 86% in nine hours, with Eclair and this use it would probably be around 60-65%
I can't wait to get the upgrade

Battery Life

I've had the phone since Sept 6th and this is 4th day I have my phone.
My battery life has been draining like crazy. I don't have a data plan, but I do go on wifi sometimes (not very often, and I don't keep it on for long). Maybe in total an hour to two a day.
I wouldn't say I am a heavy user, I don't play any games or watch any videos nor listen to music at all. I only sms and download apps.
It's been 5h 42m 35s since unplugged and my battery life is down to 57. I hardly use it, my settings are pretty much the lowest.
It says
Android System 40%
Cell standby 21%
Phone idle 13%
Display 12% (weird, since I have animations are turned off and I used lowest brightness)
Camera 6% (I took 3 photos)
Wifi 4%
Maps 2%
Dialer 2%
about 2 hours ago, I rooted my desire since I've read reviews that it makes it faster, prolongs battery life and what not. (plus I could do so much more with it later on). But my battery was still draining at like 1% every minute and half that I touch it. (I also have task killer, but I don't kill task very often)
Then my friend suggested I get SetCPU (which I did) around 2 hours ago after I rooted my phone. Then I went out and hardly touched the phone unless I received sms, or to check the time. And it went from like 69 to 56 (within that 2 hours of doing nothing)
I've searched the forum for extending battery life (and googled as well) and read other users who have the same problem, and I pretty much did what was recommended but it's still draining.
I can hardly make it through the day!!
Is there any other way that I can charge it (when to charge it) or.. do you think it might be my battery's problem? Should I buy a new one?
Thanks for all the help again (I know this kind of thread has already been done, but that was in like April)
Your battery takes time to settle if it's a brand new device. It takes a few charge/discharge cycles for that.
If after say 14 days you are still getting poor life I'd try calibrating it. Instructions are HERE.
thanks! i will try that if my battery life still drains this crazily in a week.

[Q] Is this normal?

Hello everyone
I got my DHD last week on tuesday, very happy with it so far!
So I was playing Slice It for about an hour and a half, and my battery went from 100% to 56%.
Battery Use shows this:
1h 36m since unplugged
Display 58%
Slice It 29%
akmd 5%
Android System 4%
Cell Standby 2%
Mediaserver 2%
Wi-Fi was off the whole time, brightness was at about 15-20%, and the volume at about 35%...
Is this normal for the battery to run out so quickly?
P.S. I did charge the battery for 8 hours before any use like the manual said.
Cheers
Yeah its normal for a less than 2 week old battery. My battery got progressively better every week up until week 5 or so.
Your battery will get better. Plus you were using your phone quite heavily so everything sounds about normal.
The battery doesn't last too long on the DHD. I've noted marked improvements by using a combination of JuiceDefender and AdvancedTaskKiller minimising bg apps.

[Q] Desire Z Battery life - What's it like?

I'm looking into buying a Desire Z, but am concerned a little about battery life. What's it like? I used notifications and twitter sync a lot on my nexus, so it's moderate to heavy use. What's it going to be like?
Thanks in advance.
Although I have the G2, they should be similar. I get on average about 17 hours out of my stock battery and 26 hours out of my Galilo battery off of ebay that is rated at 1800 mah.
I have about 11 hours for a day, where 9 of them is internet(3 for wi-fi and 6 for 3g), 1 hour games, 1 hour standby.

For me, moderate use is 12 hours on a good day. We desperately need some new battery technology.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2
If I run the Virtuous 1.0.1 (HTC Sense) ROM and the Standard kernel, I can easily get more than 12 hours of regular use and close to 20-24 hours with little use.

Do you need a new cover with the external battery? Cause the G2/Desire Z is pretty thick on its own....
here is what i get out of a day (battery consumption for specific tasks are mentioned in percentages measured using juiceplotter)
wifi on constantly
display set to 24% brightness
background sync enabled (google, weather 6hrs, whatsapp and facebook once a day)
45 min video (rockplayer no h/w decoding) 15%
1 hr browsing+chat 15%
30 min calls 6%
20 min music+chat 5%
20 min general usage 5%
1 hr flash streaming 15%
24 hrs standby 24% (@ 1% for every hr of standby)
15% battery remaining after 24 hrs i.e. low battery warning.
pretty amazing battery life IMO i am very happy.
Desire z and tmo g2 will have diff battey life since desire z has htc sence while the Tmo G2 just has a stock android 2.2.1. But I miself get from up to 10 hours out of it and that's milking the battery till I get 10%. I'm a hevy user of the phone wifi on most of the day. Nimbuzz or ebuddy messanger always on. And and play gunbros onit ... but all I all happy with the battery life

This really depends on how you define 'moderate' or 'heavy' usage... We all have different habits with our cell phones and there are tons of variables that impact your battery life.
There are a few threads that discuss the 'battery issue' in great detail.
In short, for me, moderate usuage yields about 12-15 hours and HEAVY use, gets me about 8-10. On most work days, I have no problem making it through the day. Its the weekends when I am 'playing' with my phone constantly that requires a quick charge in the afternoon to surive through the night.

[Q] Is this unusual battery drain from the screen?

Hello everyone! I just switched to my first Android device and am truly enjoying the experience. I can't believe I was using an iPhone for so long. I finished draining my battery for the first time and recharged it and am draining it again. My phone indicates that the screen is consuming around 66-70% of the battery drainage while everything else is quite low such as the Android OS taking up about 12%. Is this typical and does it improve over time? Thank you for your help.
this is normal but seems like that is pretty heavy use. if your phone was barely used then that is not normal.
I am going to further diagnose this. I have my brightness set to auto. I wasn't really using the phone that much. I flashed it to the yakju build and it is running 4.0.2. Is there anything I should do to test the phone?
what is your screen on time
I'm looking at
9h 56m on bettery
Android OS 33%
Phone Idle 30%
Cell Standby 22%
Screen 9% (on time 9m)
Wifi 5%
Google Services 2%
This is after the phone being nearly untouched most of the day, no calls or texts and nothing being done but checking my email once not too long ago. It's on Auto-brightness which sucks because it appears to be on the darkest setting but without that my battery seems to go from full charge to 50% in 1-2hours with moderate usage (Browsing the web, Checking email, Browsing Market, few phone calls and texts) and it sucks that I feel like I cant play with the phone because it'll be dead when I need it and without Auto-brightness the battery dies even quicker.
Almost feel like I need to be tethered to the charger.

you either have really bad signal and/or 4g and/or a process keeping the phone awake, in your case the high cell standby time suggests the first two
This seems common for the lte version. The gsm version gets very good battery life especially idle drain. Turn off lte is your best option.

Assuming you have the screen on a lot then yes. Those big beautiful screens are hard on a battery.
If you're on the LTE version using 3G only you will get around 3 hours screen on time MAX.
GSM version you will probably get 3-4 hours screen on time per charge.
