Having problems with synchronizing contacts with Gmail? - HTC Wildfire S

Hi all,
Today I ran into a problem with my phone, regarding synchronization of my contacts with Gmail. I wanted to share the problem and solution, since it is bound to happen to others.
NOTE: I have a Dutch phone, so when mentioning menu options and such I am bound to use the wrong terms.
What I did:
I came from a WM6 phone and migrated my Outlook contacts to my new Andriod phone. All went well, I had my contacts securely in my phone memory. Handy thing, it links all contacts with similar contacts from Gmail.
Since I do not use Outlook anymore (it now seems redundant) I worried about losing all my contacts when something happens to the phone, and wanted to migrate them all to Gmail.
I did this; downloaded an App (IuA Contact Backup I think), backed up the contacts and imported them into Gmail. After cleaning up the contactlist in Gmail it seemed to synchronize fine but it also made my contactlist slow. This is because it needs to link all contacts from different sources, which takes up a lot of processor speed. The phone contacts were now useless though, since they are all in Gmail.
So I decided to delete all Phone contacts. When I did this, I lost most phonenumbers (although they were still in my Gmail contacts). Then I noticed that synchronizing with Gmail had started failing, resulting in some drops of sweat and no clue how to restore it.
The error message was: "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." Apparently when I thought the contacts from Gmail had synchronized correctly, they had not.
What I did to solve this:
I started with a backup of all my contacts! If something goes wrong, I am not responsible for the loss of your contacts!
In Settings -> Applications -> 'Manage applications (?)' -> 'All applications' I went to something called 'Contact storage (?)'. Here I deleted all data.
After that, I restarted my phone (soft reboot, just use the on/off button with long-press and select 'Turn off'). When the phone starts again, it will start synchronizing with Gmail and all will be fine.
On various fora I found that Android does not like large amount of changes to the contacts in Gmail. If you delete (or change?) a lot of Gmail contacts before it synchronizes, I guess it cannot keep up with the changes and stops the process. This will not solve itself.

People / Contact list issues, Facebook for HTC Sense issue

I have really, really annoying problem, or two in fact, but they're probably related, in the People / contact app.
It doesn't remember all my settings.
For unknown reasons, it forgets my settings on many contacts, but not all.
If I open one contact, and change it to show it's name as the one reported from Facebook, it's fine for a while, but then without any warning, it just changes back to what's stored straight on the Phone.
No matter how many times I try setting it back to showing it as the one reported by Facebook as it's name, it just reverts back sooner or later (within couple minutes, though)
It never forgets the sync/link with Facebook though, the updates the statuses fine, the photos appear normally etc
And then the other, I originally had just Phone contacts enable, but I decided to save myself some time and just use Facebook contacts as addition, instead of manually entering them first to my phone and then linking.
So, I opened up People, clicked menu > view, and ticked "Only contacts with phone number" and "Facebook" in addition to already ticked Phone, and then Done.
Boom, the facebook contacts who have their phonenumber there are listed!
But just like with the issue above, couple minutes, and they're gone.
If I go back to People > Menu > View, the Only people with phone numbers and Phone are still ticked, but Facebook isn't.
And yes, I do have all the sync options enabled in Accounts & Sync settings for Facebook for HTC Sense (and even though I've added the "just" Facebook, too, it doesn't appear in the accounts list separately)
--
Then another, probably not related issue.
In people, if I go to Facebook directory, it only shows 205 contacts total, while in reality it should show 207 contacts.
I know for a fact that at least one of the missing contacts used to be there, and still is on my "normal facebook"
I had somehow gotten 2 contacts mixed into 1, with 2 numbers, 2 facebook links etc, after trashing that and re-creating the 2 as separate contacts, only one of them could be found from Facebook directory, while the other couldn't.
I've tried uninstalling Facebook updates (it doesn't allow uninstalling the whole thing), removing all the data & cache files etc, same for Facebook for HTC Sense, and even removed the account(s) alltogether from my phone, with no luck.
After re-creating the account, getting all the updates etc, it still doesn't show the 2 missing contacts (which of at least 1 was definately there in the beginning)
--
Any suggestions how to fix these issues?
Is there any other way than removing all possible backups from SD and doing "hard reset" on the phone?
try running the friend stream app, friends tab, menu, options, update
I did a hard reset of the phone tonight, and even after that, I'm missing 2 contacts from the facebook list
Now I also know which 2 are now missing, and I know that one of them wasn't missing just before hard reset, and that his contact information (which I backed up on my comp) has the HTC-made link for Facebook in it, but it's not showing up on the phone, probably due the fact that the phone thinks such facebook profile ID isn't my friend.
After the reset, the phone seems to remember the other settings, though.
Hey I've got the exactly same issue with one of my Facebook friend's not being recognised as a friend. I have her on my normal Facebook, but not via the phone so can't select her to add and sync profile Joe details. It is so annoying. I've tried everything apart from hard reset, but no joy.

Well, via hard reset I apparently got one friend that was missing back, lost another and one that was missing is still missing
edit:
Scratch that, it doesn't remember the settings anymore, don't know why, now it resets to showing only contacts with phone numbers, exchange and phone. It clears Facebook tick by itself, and adds exchange tick by itself.
bump for solution?
I have the same issue. I can actually see the contact in the facebook app. However, it is not there when I try to link my people contact with the facebook contact. It simply isn't displayed...! Annoying!!
Ha! Actually I have similar problem as you but it happened with Gmail contact and Exchange contact.
I prefer the contact to display my Exchange contact name, since it's a real name I input, then link the person with Gmail contact. However, after sync with Gmail contact, the Desire contact always forget my setting and display people by Gmail name.
It seems the Desire contact has a rule that favor Gmail name >Exchange name>Facebook name
The only way for me to resolve this is once all Gmail contact are sync, I disabled Gmail contact sync. (Gmail sync for mail is okay to keep) without Gmail contact sync, no more name setting lost issue.
Hope this helps!

Have the same problem, htc facebook shows 4 friend less than facebook web... and something curious, when i enter flickr app and the missing contacts are here!
Using DJ droid, wiped lots of times losed friends keep losed, but only in htc contacts, flickr app show all
I am pretty sure that it is your friends' Facebook settings that are blocking them from appearing in the HTC Sense contact list. My wife just disappeared a few weeks ago, and she confirmed that she had recently updated her Facebook profile to block 3rd party apps from accessing her contact information. This makes sense, as she was there one day, and disappeared the next. My guess is that this will start to happen more and more as people begin to lock down their Facebook accounts for security reasons.
Finally i knew how to solve this...
Actually WE knew it, me and my wife went crazy because suddenly out of no where she is no longer appearing in my HTC Desire (facebook for HTC sense) contacts!
I did everything you can think of even complete RESET for my phone!
But REJOICE Android HTC users, IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.... or better say, it is NOT HTC's fault, it is because of the Privacy Settings of that friend in his/her facebook account.
He/She has activated the (Turn Off All Platform Apps) under Privacy Settings -> Apps and Websites -> Apps You Use !!!
Once the user changes their settings and you Sync, they will appear back again, but you have to re-link them.
Many thanks for this information.
This setting has take some hourse of try and error to solve the problem on my device.

Problem with Google contacts

Last night i decided to sort out my google contacts because the ones in the phone were well sorted but the ones in my gmail account weren't. So I exported the contacts to the SD card then i transfered them to my PC and replaced the ones on GMail with them. I made some changes and on GMail and then exported the new contacts to the PC then SD card and then deleted and replaced the ones on the phone. Now both the phone and the Gmail account have the same info on them. After awhile i made a few minor changes to the contacts on Gmail and since then it won't sync with my phone contacs anymore.
In theory i could retry the above process but that would be a temporary fix until i need to change or add something on either the Gmail account or the phone. What can i do to make google contacts sync to my phone? (BTW, I have a stock HTC Desire 2.2 Froyo with the latest OTA update and i'm running Windows 7 on my PC)
Were your Gmail contacts syncing with the phone previously? The default behavior is for changes you make in the browser to appear on the phone right away. This can be toggled on/off by going to Menu/Settings/Accounts and sync and touching "Auto-sync". Check that first, and "Background data" above it are both checked. You will see your active accounts below those two things under "Manage Accounts". If the two boxes above are checked and your Gmail account is listed below, then I'm out of ideas.
I have the same problem - but it seems that I have misunderstud the greatnes of google contacts???
Because it works for me to sync my Desire with the changes I make in my google contacts ON MY COMPUTER - however (and this is what I thought was the cool bit with google contacts...) I cannot sync my contacts on my gmail (on the computer) with my Desire when I ex create a new contact ON MY DESIRE...
Any solutions, missing settings...???
Push contact info from phone to Google
foxhunter123,
When I go to save a new contact on my phone, I usually start at the call history. Let's assume you dialed a new number for someone and now you want to save that number you just called as a new contact.
Touch the plus sign next to the number in your call history. You should get prompt to "Save to People" with options to create a new contact or save to an existing one.
Choose the option you want, then the next window asks you what type of contact. Google, SIM, or Phone. Choose Google and then input whatever other info you want, like their name, etc. Note that if you sync the phone with more than one Google account, they will all appear here, and you need to pick the right one.
Once you save it, it should sync that info to your Google contacts you see on your computer. In other words, the phone will push the new contact info to Google, instead of the other way around.
There are probably several different ways of doing this, but this way works just fine for me. I have an unrooted Desire running the latest stock ROM with all the updates current. If you try this and it does not work, you might be better off rooting and trying out a different ROM, or trying a factory reset.
Double check your settings I mention in the second post, and try the above steps. Good luck and post here again if you are not successful.
Hello
And thank you very very much for trying to help me!
I just cannot get it to work... :-(
I have just exported my contacts from my gmail on my computer using the vcard format (the only format I can find on my Desire when importing?) and then I deleted all my contacts on my Desire and then imported the vcard file so that both the gmailcontacts on my computer gmail and the desire is identical.
But I just cannot get new contacts to apear in my pc-gmail when I add them on the Desire!!!
When I go to settings, acounts and syncronization, everything is tjecked and when I press my google acount it's also tjecked in all 3 options.
However - and this is perhaps the problem... - the date of my syncronizecantacts is wrong - it says 21/112010 but both gmail and calender has the current date...
Is there something that can block the sync of contacts?
I have previosly used HTC sync but that was when I tried to sync my contacts to my pc's outlook and since I'm now 100 % google I don't use it anymore...
I really hope you (or somebody else) can help me... ;-)
Oh and Happy New Year
My google contact sync stopped working a few weeks ago. The last time this happened it was down to a facebook issue. However this time I ignored the problem and use MyPhoneExplorer (free) to sync contacts between Android and PC.
Well I'm out of ideas. At this point, you should try doing a factory reset to see if that fixes it. If not, root and try a different ROM. If the phone is still under warranty you could also try returning or exchanging it.
Well... I took the big step and made a factory reset and now everything just works perfect!
And I now can see why the android system is so great!
A thing to remark though is, that it's a know issue that you have to have a google acount BEFORE you start up the Desire the first time, but I think that it's also safe to say that you also have to have your contacts stored as google contacts before you start up the Desire for the first time!(?)
I also thought that I had to import my contacts to my Desire wich isn't the case since they now come automatically from my Gmail (Googlecontacts on my pc/the internet) to my Desire... ;-)
Another very huge advantage with doing the above is that after installing all of my programs again I have still 50 MB free where there previously only was 26 MB left...???
My biggest problem now is that I have to start all over in Angry Birds and seasons... Or is there a way to restore my levels completed in the games?

That sounds like the Contacts memory leak problem.
See:
http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/127440-internal-memory-again.html
Next time, before doing a factory reset, try clearing data for both Contacts and Contacts Storage from the Application Manager. The Google sync should kick in shortly after and put everything back on your phone from your Google account.

[Q] Gmail or Android problem?

I've had my phone with me for awhile now, and so far so good and I've been regularly syncing with Gmail.
A couple of days back, when I wanted to send an e-mail from my computer, the list of contact suggestions that would automatically pop out as you type your contact's name wouldn't come out.
I found this strange, so I checked my contact book (from inside gmail on the computer). To my horror, the contact(s) were gone!
I've also noticed weird folders in my gmail, most that begin with "[IMAP]/" followed by drafts, inbox, etc
I checked my android, under the people app, and the contact's phone number, along with their email was still listed in my phone.
I've been searching around, and I understand that some people are having this problem in reverse, whereby contacts are disappearing from their android. Not much help there, I suppose.
So my question is; is this an android sync problem, or is gmail getting iffy?
I've now taken a precaution and have exported a back up of my gmail contacts in csv. ... but.. you can never know when this will happen again.
Pardon me if I sound noob-ish. The android is my first smartphone
Edit: Today it happened again. I seem to be losing contacts everyday. Even now my gmail chat client on the left seems to be missing contacts.
the imap folders etc you can turn off in the gmail settings server side not mobile side
Thank you
Any idea about the missing contacts?

[Q] I have a situation regarding multiple contacts under same name/phone number

I'm not sure how this could've happened, but here's the deal:
Under the majority of my contacts, there are SEVERAL profiles merged together. These profiles all have the EXACT same information. This makes texting almost like a scavenger hunt.
For example: I want to text "andrew", so I type in "andrew" in the To: field, and a popup comes up with:
Andrew 555-555-5555
Andrew 555-555-5555
Andrew 555-555-5555
Andrew 555-555-5555
Andrew 555-555-5555
etc etc
Andrew A 777-777-7777
Andrew A 777-777-7777
Andrew A 777-777-7777
etc.
Andrew B 888-888-8888
Andrew B 888-888-8888
Andrew B 888-888-8888
etc.
I've tried deleting all contacts but as soon as it syncs with google, the problem re-arises. I've looked through my google contacts (through gmail) but there's no repeats! So really, i have no idea what the issue is, but would love to resolve it asap.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I should note that I "deleted" all contacts by going to settings -> applications -> manage -> all -> and clearing data from contacts and contacts storage
Do you also synch with your PC? Have you had to replace your phone recently? I had this happen when I did my first sync to the PC after getting a new phone. I had to remove all the duplicates on the PC to stop it from duplicating on the phone.
My other thought is it may be your friends from Facebook. Do you have Facebook set up on your phone? If they have phone numbers in their Facebook profile the phone will add them.
Finally, if neither of these apply I would do into each duplicate contact and find out where the phone says it is coming from. For example, if the contact info was synced from your Gmail account it will say Gmail under the name. If it was manually entered into the phone and/or synched from your PC it will say Phone under the name. If it was pushed to the phone from an Exchange mail account it will say Exchange under it. Maybe tracking down where the duplicates are coming from will help you get it resolved.
I had the same issue so I went to menu>accounts & sync and made sure I only had one profile syncing contacts. After that I went through and deleted all contacts. Then go to gmail(if you created a gmail account for your phone) and pull up the contacts section. Go through and delete/merge your contacts. Then go back to menu>accounts and sync, and sync your gmail contacts after the modification.

I have never synced with my PC, but this IS on a new ROM. I didn't ahve this issue on the old ROM. Also, these are all gmail contacts. I checked my gmail contact list, and there's no duplicates.

I have two profiles that sync on my phone: facebook and google. Manually deleting the contacts would take forever, and I'm not sure if that would fix the problem, considering that deleting contact data previously didn't.
Also, as stated previously, I checked my contacts list through gmail and there were no duplicates.
I think this problem stems from myself accidentally hitting "import all" when choosing which vcf file to import. I've made several over the course of the last half year, so that may be the reason.
Another interesting thing I've noticed: If I manually delete a bunch of duplicated on my phone, the numbers STILL show up when I'm entering a name into the "To:" section. So I'm down to just one "Andrew 555-555-5555" in my contacts app, but when I type in Andrew to send him a text I still get:
Andrew 555-555-5555
Andrew 555-555-5555
Andrew 555-555-5555
Andrew 555-555-5555
etc.
It may seem that way...
You may want to drop the facebook contacts, it doesnt add anything except a picture maybe a phone number if the person entered it and email address.
I know deleting your contacts sounds like a pain on the phone but just do all of them. when you log onto Gmail it has some simple tools that make a large task take about 5 minutes. I had 500 contacts on my gmail contacts and it took me less than 5 minutes to compress it to 150.

[Q] Contacts error: "android.process.acore stopped unexpectedly"

Hello everyone!
Today when I tried to use my phone, I got this error message:
Sorry! The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again [Force close]

I'm on Samsung Captivate Glide, AT&T version, running on Gingerbread 2.3.5, and I've never had this problem before.
From what I've gathered, it appears when:
I tap on a contact in Contacts and in Favorites (it says "No additional information for this contact"), and even on contacts saved as shortcuts on homescreen. Also when I try to Add a new contact.
However, it does let me call when I slide my finger over the contact to right.
Now, I browsed a number of threads and forums so far to see if I can't find anything to help. This is all I've tried so far:
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All > Contacts / Contact Storage > Clear data
I also cleared data from all google applications this way, and also from Account and sync settings, Calendar, Calendar storage, Dialer, Dialer Storage, DRM content, DRM content launcher, DRM protected content storage, Media storage as per adviced, with no luck.
A fairly common reason for this error was said to be Facebook sync, or Calendar app, but the thing is I don't even have a FB account and I don't use my phone's calendar. Similarly, it was suggested that you turn off sync, but I didn't have sync on, and I tried disabling Background data as well, but again, no luck.
With some users, problem seemed to lie in recently updated app, especially those that use the contacts. I uninstalled [Yahoo] Messenger, Google +, Whatsapp, , Drive, Skype, Twitter, and Facebook, Gmail and YouTube updates (since can't get rid of the apps themselves) and several other apps (Firefox, Cut the Rope Experiments game), but - you guessed it - to no avail.
Thing is, when I chose the option to Merge contacts with google account, it fetched all my google contacts and let me use them.
I tried saving all my contacts as Vcard list, cleared the storage and then tried to boot all contacts from the saved Vcard again. I got the same error message (I uploaded it in Attachments). I though that might be caused by some glitch in my recent contacts, so I tried to import that Vcard to google contacts, then export it again and open in phone. Same error message. To confirm it's not a problem with recent contacts, I managed to dig out an older Vcard (from last year), but it doesn't work either.
Funny thing is, when I select the option Import/Export in Contacts, I only get one option, and that's Send namecard via. If I recall correctly, there used to be more options, no...? When I first got the phone, I transferred my contacts from LG KP500 Cookie by these same namecards without any problem.
I saw some people link to some patch fix for HTC, do you think it would work on my Glide?
Tl;Dr: Out of the blue, I got an android.process.acore force close error. I can call but can't access or edit my contacts nor load namecards on GB. Tried everything advised on various fora, nothing helped.
I would appreciate any advice or even a suggestion, as I would like to avoid factory reset... Thanks
same thing here, I cannot add contacts and keep crashing - I've tried also to clear the data and stop the processes of Contacts and contacts Storage, but with now result.
I am on a Samsung Galaxy S2 running Gingerbread 2.3.5
EDIT: I can't even load my contacts back from the SD card. woooooohooooo, everything was fine and working before some app update...I don't keep track of everything after every little modification of an app, tough. please help!
