Undervolting, Overclocking and random freezes. - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running back into the problem of custom Roms freezing on me, no FC's, just the phone freezing and requiring a battery pull to re-boot. I odin EC05 plus, let it boot and sit for a few minutes, reboot, let it convert, flash cwm purple, wipe, then flash whatever rom, and eventualy they all freeze.
The only roms to never give me that problem is CM7, MIUI and true stock.
Tried everything, except for not using the stock cable, but even still, cm7 and miui have no problem.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

I've had the same problem with SRF 1.2...and I linked the problem to certain SetCPU settings like on demand and userspace and to undervolting to much in the higher OC'd frequency ranges...even though I've experimented wih these settings and found a somewhat stable medium...I still get the random freezes once in a blue...I don't know what else it could be.
Sent from my rooted, suited, & booted Epic 4G kno dat!

Right now I'm on SRF with the 1.1.1 Kernel, using setCPU 200-1000, cfq, and no undervolting at all. I was on the 1.1.0 Kernel using voltage control when I had it freeze. I've uninstalled voltage control and galaxy tuner. Oddly enough setcpu dosent fc when I go into the voltages, which it did a few flashes back.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

What problems do you think Galaxy tuner was giving you...I'm using it right now?
Sent from my rooted, suited, & booted Epic 4G kno dat!

I wasn't sure, but I figured with using setcpu it would be best to uninstall it so there wasn't any sort of conflicts between the two.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

I'm not sure I follow where the conflict btwn those 2 apps would be...once controls cpu speed, governing, and voltage...and the other controls screen brightness and sound attributes...not trynna be a smart ass I'm just trynna make the connection?
Sent from my rooted, suited, & booted Epic 4G kno dat!

In galaxy tuner there is some options for overclocking, as well as IO scheduling.

You didn't read my OP, I have no problems at all with FC's, my problem is the phone freezes and I have to pull the battery to restart.

If you aren't undervolting and are having this issue on multiple ROMs, it sounds like a conflict between some apps like you suspected. That or something is not right with your phone. Freezes happen to me when undervolting too much but you aren't doing that....edit...maybe your phone just doesn't like the 200 minimum that well. If I remember right, stock values are 1000 max and 400 min.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App

I'm wondering if maybe the 200mhz is whats doing it then, I always figured 200-1000 was stock, and the phone would only freeze when the screen was off. Right now I'm using setCPU with it set at 200-1000 with cfq IO scheduling. If I have more freezes I will try bumping up to 400-1000.

im currently undervolted with the aosp rom from dub with genocide's final kernel...200mhz is perfectly fine...if 200 is underclocked too low or other frequencies are too low...sod or freezes will happen with the frequency with the wrong voltage is reached..i have setcpu and voltage control together but mainly use the new setcpu...when idling, i see a 1 percent draw in 2 hours and 6 minutes...and use stability test whenever you underclock to see if it safe to use...just my 2 cents...

SetCPU and screen not turning on...

Now I am not blaming the app I am just wondering... everynow and then, when I wake my phone up, it doesn't want to wake up or when I turn it on and try to unlock it freezes... was wondering if anyone else was getting the same thing.

SetCPU issues
I have been having the same issues myself. Mine was set low to 100min/max: screen off just as a test today and it did that to me a on a few seperate occasions. Not sure why, just ended up battery pulling after 10-15 seconds of no response from the phone.
The cpu is set too low on screen off, go for 245 or so
setcpu does not play nice with r phones. i had problems witth it on every kernal i played with. right now im using the mix up kernal. i used setcpu to 1.2ghz max and 100mhz min. conservative governore. i have yet to find a set up to use while the screen is locked with no issues. what i do know is galaxy s phones only like the conservative setting. maybe a 400mhz max 100mhz min with conservastive governore would work?
Make sure setcpu is set to conservative. I set my lowest to 200mhz and max at 1200. No issues here other than sometimes the notification pull down bar is laggy but it does that stock anyway.

The rom don't control the cpu speeds. The kernal does. You cab run any rom kernal combo you would like. In order to hit the 1.4ghz you want you need to run a kernal that is capable of doing so

Is SetCPU really necessary anymore? If you run a kernel that's not locked into performance mode it will scale on it's own even without SetCPU. I haven't installed it on my Epic yet and when monitoring the phone with SystemPanel I see my CPU go down to 200mhz when idle and scale up when processes are running.
Where is the kernel for 1.4? I have baked snack rom max is 1.2 i know kernel is the part that "controlls" speed but I'm stuck. Any help

Set cpu with stock kernel droid incredible

I just rooted my incredible and I'm using the kernel that came with it stock. I disabled perflock and I left the max speed to 998 and the min speed to 245.
When I'm not doing anything on my incredible, I see that the speed constantly changes from the max to the min. Not even one second passes before it just goes back and forth, back and forth. Is this normal?
Coming from the d1 where it would stay at the min when idle, I'm not sure if what's going on with my incredible is normal.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Yes that's normal. For better battery life, I'd try a kernel with smartass governor. It spends more time on the lower frequencies.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
Switching to a different kernel will give you the ability to overlook//underfoot the system needed.. this in turn increases battery life.. kingklick, ziggy's, chad's kernel are all well known kernels.. you will want to play with different kernels.. not every kernel will be stable to overlook to certain speeds on certain Rom's.. switching kernels is almost as addictive as switching roms.. always nandroid before flashing anything..
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Typos on my end.. underfoot = undervolt.. overlook = overlook.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Will those kernels work on my rooted stock incredible?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Yea! By stock i'm assuming all you did was root. I am currently running SkyRaider 3.5 Sense along with
"2.6.32.26-ubcredujuerbek-12082010 [email protected] #11"
I will edit with links to these two items.
SkyRaider 3.5 Sense - SkyRaider
Chad's Kernel - Incredikernel
My phone runs amazingly fast with sense but yet, even with heavy usage (Texting constantly, on the internet, gmail, even Fring) I can go an easy 24 hours on one charge. If my phone stays screen-off idle I could last at 95%-100% for several hours.
Yes, all I did was root.
Does the chad kernel provide wireless tether and will i still need to disable perflock in setcpu?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
the non stock kernels all disable perflock already, you do not need to do it..
flash the kernel via clockwork, and you are set.. jump into setcpu and adjust some settings and add profiles.. you'll be golden..

Not quite. I believe Lou's has some tweaks within perflock, so disabling it would lose those.
And most kernel devs, particularly Lou and the ones who use HAVS, advise against using SetCPU. I'd check with your chosen kernel thread for details.

Also, I wouldn't 'set on boot', at least till you find frequencies that your phone can handle safely. Otherwise, you'll get a 'crash' loop, where your phone starts up just fine, but once you go past the initial lockscreen it'll crash and reboot. Very annoying...

what rager said... ive put on kernels and ran em high only to get a "boot loop".. its tuff to get out of cause you need to get back into setcpu to scale back otherwise it keep on going.... i learned to put the setcpu app icon on my main screen so i can get there fast to scale back..

SetCPU is useful regardless of ROM or Kernel. The ability to select different profiles and CPU settings based on need or battery life is always nice. I would set my default to "On Demand" and max 998 min 128. Then enable profiles and set it up how you like. I perfer to drop my cpu way down while charging, wayyy down for screen off, and hero style 528 for 50% or less battery.
If you do opt for a different kernel make sure it is one that is listed in Myn's post, otherwise it will bork your Spare Parts app.

SetCPU Issues

I'm having problems with the so called "sleep of death".
I make all my profiles and leave the defaults for conservative. Minimum is set to 200mhz and max for screen off is 600.
It seems like no matter what I set the clocks to my phone never wakes up from sleep. I have to pull the battery to turn it back on.
Running SFR1.1.1.
Sent from my Epic 4G via Tapatalk
Edit
Is it the screen off profile?
If you're using the included kernel for SRF 1.1.1 don't use a screen off profile, set it to conservative, and minimum cpu at 200mhz. It should be fine with those settings.
Its on the first page of the SRF thread.

Switch to paid version of Voltage Control. It's optimized for us now.
Having issues with setcpu freezing up my phone even with no profiles.
If voltage control is optimized for epics I may buy it. Underclocking really boosts battery life.

Wasn't Conservative deemed buggy for the Epic? And ondemand was the better option?
The new twilight kernel, which is included in SRF 1.1.1 is fine with conservative.
There is a free version of voltage control too. Uninstall set cpu and try that first and see how that works for you... if that doesn't help, maybe you should flash a different kernel.

Yup. I believe this is posted a few times on the ACS thread. Go with Genocide or Vision. Now on demand will drop below 200 even if its set at your minimum but may very well still work.

Have you tried getting rid of the profiles? (After backing them up, of course)
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
I use the Vision kernel with SetCPU to ondemand with NO issues at all I had profiles enabled at one point but it seemed redundant because I had it set to ondemand. If you have it set to anything other than ondemand then I can see using profiles.

[Q] AOKP w/ Ktoonsez kernel CPU stuck at maximum frequency

ive been running ICS since i got my phone, the battery life was horrible until i fixed the power profile, but even after that my phone's battery was not that good. i decided to flash CM10, then i switched to AOKP, both of them are awesome, but i noticed that the battery wasnt that good either, i got the ktonnsez kernel. i tried other governors, they all stay at maximum (1512MHz) after about 5 minutes of a reboot. i tried basically everything, reflash every thing, wiped everything possible. I need help plz, i wanna enjoy my S3 without worrying about the battery dying.
its all normal when i start my phone, but after 5 minutes it just stays at maximum CPU...idk why plz help im on galaxy s3 ATT i747M...i searched everywhere but still didnt find the answer
If you flashed kt747 you need to use the ktweaker app that comes with the kernel. When you find this app you need to check the two boxes into general settings

Try a different governor. Personally I use on demand and noop for the scheduler.
Make sure you don't have any other overclocking programs which may be conflicting. I used to use SetCPU but with the toonz kernel I get Ktweaker. So I got rid of SetCPU.
Funny yours is locking at maximum. Mine used to lock at 96Mhz and run like crap. The above method worked for me. Don't forget to make sure your running the most updated kernel, wipe cache/dalvik/fix permissions.

Tyvm, i did what u told me and its working for now, i was using ktweaker the whole time, but i like to check my current speed in ROM control, idk why maybe cuz the numbers are bigger? ;P im still not sure if its going to work for a long time, i did a reflash yesterday, i charged my phone at 100 percent last night, and it was sitting on low frequency, when i woke up, i was suprised to see a 6% drop of the battery, leaving me 94% left. but the speed was at 1512. and cell standby was using most of the battery.

Use ktweaker instead of the rom settings. Go to the performance section in settings and disable set on boot. Then, go to ktweaker and set as "apply settings immediately after boot". Once you're done, set to whatever you want it to be.
