Technical reason for not upgrading to gingerbread if you want s-off? - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

OK, so we all know that if you upgrade to gingerbread OTA you'll lose the ability to s-off with alpharevx.
What we also know is that there will be a lot of people, myself included, who will begin visibly twitching when gingerbread is available and s-off isn't. i mean, here's this sexy update, full of tweaks, and we can't touch the sweet sweet goodness...
So here's my question - why? What is the technical reason behind it, and where did it come from? Did it come from alpharevx? Is it a real limitation, or is it one of those things we all "know" but isn't actually true? There's gonna be a lot of people who flash GB thinking "eh, there will be a fix for this too." On the surface of it, you gotta think there will be - new dinc2's will come with GB preinstalled at some point soon - what about those guys? xtc clip only?

well yea you can get a small fix now, and be stuck. or use the XTC clip and have goodies like this

CM7 is awesome as well. not too mention once root is around for more people, they will build some awesome ROMs. much more awesome than stock.

oh, i'm not going to be touching it, but i know many many people will.

to each their own. I thought of selling my inc2 before root. I'd rather pay $100 for root now than use a Thunderbolt. anyday.

i had used used xtc clip to get S-OFF , i am not sure if running the OTA GB update i will get a S-ON .

no it wont, nothing will..

well, both GB and S-OFF have been labelled as 'coming soon' recently. supposedly GB will start to become available this monday. as for S-OFF, its still TBA. I guess it just depends on you. I used to have an HTC HD2 and the best thing I ever did for it was load custom ROMs.

i've got zero interest in the thunderbolt. i think this is the best phone on VZ, right now. i'd much rather run CM7 or another rom five minutes after alpha is released than have GB now and then have to potentially wait longer.
i'm on the alpharev chat now, and it sounds like the reason is the exploit being used requires froyo - it's patched in gingerbread. i get the sense that if this were 2.3.4, we could use gingerbreak, but in 2.3.3, it's not gonna fly.

From what I understand 2.3.4 wouldn't help make gingerbreak possible since the exploit used by gingerbreak was explicitly patched already in RUU's that have leaked. If they've got it patched in 2.3.3 there's no reason it wouldn't also be patched in 2.3.4. Once security holes are found (and bottom line, yes, gingerbreak is a security hole) and patched they aren't re-opened on purpose.

you're a MOD?

I know this is a tad late now, but I'll give a real technical reason not to hit the GB leaks.
Once you S-OFF you can load a rooted version of the GB leaks and have the best of both worlds. You can't root the GB leak right now, but someone can take the leak, remove the locks, repackage it, and release it so that it's available with root access. This requires S-OFF and will not work for S-ON users at all.
So you have to ask: Do I want the GB leak or do I want a rooted GB leak?

grack warns Google and Sprint about EVO security hole

Grack is reporting that holes in Sense have made it ridiculously easy for any app to escalate itself to root. He notes in the post that "both Google and Sprint have been very proactive in plugging this hole." He also notes that, while he will be releasing his rooter tomorrow, he won't be explaining it for a week. This makes me wonder if there's an OTA in the works that will close at least his vulnerability in the meantime.

wow, this sounds like a serious security flaw. i'd prefer not to see a worm or malicious 3rd party app gaining root access through poorly coded HTC sense apps.
dont think it will remove NAND protection of /system in normal android mode.
it will provide an alternate way to achieving root access in normal android mode besides loading Flipz ROM.
wonder if removing all sense related software will remove this exploit?
guess we'll be able to start testing tomorrow...

That's a good point, I guess AOSP 2.1 doesn't have this problem since he says its due to Sprint's additions.
Has HTC / Sprint ever been fast at rolling out an update?
I wouldn't worry, maybe an OTA months down the road, but I wouldn't count on anything within weeks...
The last Sprint phone I had was a RAZR, so I'm a bad source as to their history of timeliness; however, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a different strategy for pushing out a critical security patch than they would for a new system build.
They don't have to rewrite thousands of files against a new trunk build, bounce it between vendors, run extensive Android compatibility suites, etc. It's quite possible they have a few relatively simple changes to make to close grack's hole.
i bet they will patch it when they patch the tethering so that you have to pay for it. some time in july
there will be an update tomorrow. dont know the change log.......
so is it better to root or not to?

Usually I hate resurrected threads, but this one deserves a second look.
At this point should we continue to wait for 2.3 root, or build a time machine to prevent the update from being rolled out?
Actually, yeah, this is definitely something worth looking at.
If the exploit still exists, it might be able to get root for people on the OG Evo 2.3.
Anyone look (like teamwin) look into this yet?

If I understand it right you can't root the Frojo update by using software only.
It can be done by using something like an xtc clip to get S-off, but that way is expensive £105.- +shipping to buy one.
What unrevoked does is giving us an oportunity to root using software only. But as said before 2.2.1 version in curently not supported by unrevoked

To be honest i wouldn't buy another wildfire wether its an S or the old one. Bull%^$t upgrades just to bring up the price. S is what our current wildfire should have been when it came out... And for the price it has now...
Way offtopic here sorry
So still waiting for an update from alpharev. No news yet.
I am waiting on the pricing for the incredible S. Would seem like a good upgrade if the price is good
I bought the wildfire as a starter smartphone. It has exceeded all my expectations, but I don't think I would go for another phone with such low specs as everything else is getting soo much better!

Does anyone know how can i unlock my htc wildfire with 2.2.1, because it is has a sim lock just for telenor network, but i wanna unloc it for other networks too???
please respond
Hello!
Like I said in other threads, it's a shamer not letting the customer decide what he/she wants to do with her smartphone. IF I WANT TO INSTALL WINDOWS 98 ON IT, WELL THEN IT BE SO. But no, they have to block it, just so we stick with their software and can't fix thing for ourselves.
I think I speak for all when I say, next time I'm going to buy a phone which is not locked, so I can do what I want, not having to wait for someone to make a programm or hardware to make it according to be unlocked
yours truly
I can see the end of the road for my wildfire, the fire is already put out. Seen threads in the desire forum that froyo root by unrevoked but not wildfire causes frustration cos new users with latest batch handset would come with froyo.
I feel lucky enough to root my phone just in time.
So no official froyo rooting hope only check unrevoked website daily hope, or of course buy a better phone.

From what I am reading, a lot of them were trying to flash IS roms onto S-OFF I2. They were *I AM GUESSING* probably told that they are buying an imported IS and doesn't realize it's actually an entirely different model.
Nothing really to see here in terms of breakthroughs... there's a way to S-OFF these VZW I2's... there's a list of address on their forums, but China is kind of far from NY.... haha
EDIT:
PS. There seems to be couple of reasons why they really like our I2s over their own domestic S710d. First being that ours are made in Taiwan instead of China, I am guessing the quality is better? and the Second being that it is said the domestic S710d are not S-OFF able as of right now, and only the VZW rom can support WCDMA on top of EVDO and 1X.
My own speculation, it seems like it's an XTC-clip based method from how people are describing it. I will be following their forum closely and will post here if found anything new.

Bah. I wanted the Incredible 2, but maybe my OG Droid will have to keep kicking until they announce a phone officially with an unlocked boot loader. I don't think they'll do it retroactively, but I'd love them more if they do. I want an Inc 2!
i just got my inc2 from my second insurance claim this year, so i can't 'break' my phone to get one of the new unlocked ones, i really hope they unlock it with an ota, or maybe 'leak' the keys to some devs, so they can do it for us..
I've only had mine a couple weeks. I'm not the type to commit insurance fraud to try to get an unlocked one. I was just joking but I know claims will go up with some people trying to get a new unlocked one.
I have another upgrade in October so I can wait if necessary. I have a feeling they won't be retroactive but the codes may be leaked somehow.
Yup...Tapatalk'd
Ya I'm not either, I've dropped my phone off my balcony twice now in a year, but even if I was super tempted I couldn't anyway. Realistically they won't be retroactive but we can all hope they will leak the keys.

I don't see why all you guys are so doubtful that HTC will unlock phones that have already been released. The Inc 2 is less than a couple months old, there's no reason to believe that HTC would not apply their new stance to it. My worst case scenario is that we have to wait for the first OTA update (hopefully to GB) before it is unlocked. Even if they for some reason choose not to unlock it, the newer unlocked phones will almost certainly provide some insight on how to unlock this one. Have patience, this phone is pretty amazing without root anyway, there's no reason to be so desperate for it.

There's someone in the IS forum claiming they got prem root (heh, see what I did there?) without hardware. So far all that's been posted is a youtube video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aK_V7xo3qug
I'm taking this with a grain of salt, however. When I see the process reproduced by other people, or instructions I can follow and see for myself, I'll believe it then. Hopefully if the process is publicized it will also work on the I2, given how similar the devices are.
WE WILL SEE!

Actually, where have you been? The IS has XTC Clip working on all but the Bell branded version of it, and that is the only unlock method available. The video seems to indicate, and the person who posted it implies, that a non hardware method was found, meaning no XTC Clip required.
I do read that forum on occasion in hopes that whatever they find works on our side as well So far almost all of the exploits found to work on the IS work on the I2 as well. The one difference in filesystems is probably the only thing that separates them enough for soft perm root on IS to fail on I2. I did say that I hope it works for us as well.

I agree completely. And I think that people should be informed of the way things are ran around here. I just don't like people who feel the need to be downright obnoxious to people for making a mistake. The damage is done by that point, answer the question, and inform them that they should search from now on. It disgusts me that people get so high and mighty on forums.
Regardless of what question is asked.. Most likely the person asking didn't come in here to ruin someones day or make a similar question to someone else. They simply came here to ask a question or get some advice.. To actually take the time to post some idiotic insult is beyond moronic and basically just says you have nothing better to do with your time than troll forums and bash people for what you "obviously" already know.. This equates to one possible solution for everyone involved.. GET A LIFE!!!
To answer what someone else asked.
I dont think it is possible to do anything with a phone that has a OTA update if Gingerbread on it. I remember reading that it is not possible to undo that update. you simply must wait for the Root to come out, which should be soon.
These Devs are some of the smartest people on the planet, and should be working for HTC et al. They are most likely waiting for some code to be released, just like I am waiting for some coding to be released to I can get a new Kernel for my Synergy ROM.

I'm pretty sure this guy is trolling you. I have an evo on 2.3.3 that I got last week, and I'm patiently waiting to root. When a method comes out this forum is gonna light up with posts about it, you won't have to search for it to hard.
Heres to hoping we get root soon!
You CANNOT root 2.3 yet!
There has been at LEAST 100 threads about this is the last month. I have personally responded to 3 threads in the past day alone. Please do a search next time, it would literally have taken you 10 seconds.
You aren't a friend for allowing him to take the update. And if you know how to root then u should know there is no root for 2.3 ota... In fact there will never be again... If the amount of new devices that have dropped or will in the 3rd and 4th quarter including iPhone 5// like really if u want root... Go buy a rooted device....
Let the developer move on to bigger things.. and learn on your own to gain root access just like they did.... No one wants to take the time out to learn... They expect these guys to do it all...
I say no more root for evo... why.. so u can gain root then complain when you can install them rom or kernel right...nah.... Make em like them guys on Craigslist....

Based on that type of logic, this place would not exist. If every one had to learn how to root on their own I don't think there would be too many rooted devices out there. I agree about the complaining but that doesn't apply to everyone. And if people took the time out to successfully port 2.3.3 with sense 2.1 for the hero, I have to believe someone / some group will successfully root the Evo again.
