[Q] R800i Telstra NextG - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I recently bought an Xperia Play from eBay but I later discovered that it is an R800i model and not compatible with Telstra NextG (850mhz band I beleive) so I am stuck using older GSM networks (no regular 3g out here) meaning I rarely get any signal (at least when I'm at home). Is the hardware between models identical meaning it is possible to flash to an R800a ROM or official Telstra ROM (whatever its called) to fix this? I searched the forums and google but I couldn't find an R800a ROM, is there a reason for this? Can it be done yet? Let me know

The hardware radio is different, i/a roms will flash fine between the two because at this stage radios are not being flashed..
Sorry for the bad news

Oh well thanks anyway...I might have to switch to optus or something then...

Reviving this thread instead of starting a new one.
Is there a way to change the radio of a R800i to support Tesltra's NextG? I swapped radios all the time on my Desire and am wondering if the same is possible on the Play...

Look up all the bands for the different play versions, flash the firmware that has it if there is one?
Sent from a Galaxy far, far away

no, you cant, r800i has an 900mhz radio and r800a is 850mhz, you can buy a telstra xperia play at kmart atm for $200 telstra locked prepaid.
Most of the roms i use my r800a are actually r800i roms but they offer better market support, so its best to use them, imo.

Hey Maelstrom, but when you change your rom to a 800i, does your frequency changes to 900mhz?

No, the Radio isn't touched when u change roms, if it was flashed with a 900mhz radio the radio would just not work until you flashed it with the correct 850mhz software.
Consider the R800a and r800i firmware completely interchangeable for the most part, but as I mentioned earlier, market support is better on the r800i roms, so that's why I use it.

This may be a stupid question, but can someone tell me what's the difference between R800i, R800a and R800x?

R800x is the CDMA Verizon Wireless USA variant, and is currently unrootable, but runs stock vanilla Android.
R800i is the original GSM variant sold over in Europe and the UK.
I'm not entirely sure about the R800a, my brain is giving me conflicting stories about Taiwan/Singapore, and Canada Rogers versions.... I could be ENTIRELY wrong on that though.
One is for verizon, one is for some other US network and the R800I is for the rest of the world i think
Models so far?;
r800i (uk, europe, australia, new zealand, asia?)
r800a (canada rogers, mexico + also asia?)
r800at (usa at&t)
r800x (usa verizon)
Z1i (china?)
They all have the same specs internal memory, processor e.t.c
In Mexico we get r800a too. With all the sony experience.
So the models depend on the location or the providers.

Both. In the case of U.S.A you guys get R800x for Verizon and R800at for At&T

I would say model depends on providers since anyone using gsm is likely to get the R800i or R800a anyone using cdma is gonna get the R800x or R800at.
The only difference in GSM and CDMA is gsm phones have a simcard, CDMA phones dont have simcards your account information is programmed onto your phone. Dunno if the CDMA xperia plays have R-UIM cards though? CDMA is supposed have have faster data transfer speeds (internet) up to 700kbps (EVDO). Gsm is roughly 400+kbps (HSDPA)
Gsm is world wide and CDMA is mainly usa and some parts of asia
I thought there was a dev model as well whats that one called?
Saw someone talking about it somewhere

The only difference between the R800a and R800i is the HSDPA radio frequency set. You can buy both in Australia as both frequency sets are in use by various carriers.
R800i works on 900MHz and 2100MHz
R800a works on 800MHz 850MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz
Firmware images are compatible between R800i and R800a.
Both are incompatible with R800x as far as I know.
I don't know about the R800at.

R800at isn't CDMA (its another GSM Variant). Interestingly, although it seems to do nothing and has a plastic bit inserted in the way, the CDMA (R800x) version does have a sim-card slot, and if you go into some of the diag screens, you can turn on GSM... I haven't tried getting a prepaid sim to see if it works though. So the R800x might just have both if we are lucky, however I doubt its fully enabled in the kernel level.
R800i is also Oceania ( AUS/NZ )

Thanks for the info. I was sure R800i & R800a are GSM and i knew R800x was CDMA wasnt sure about r800at so i just presumed it was CDMA as well
I cannot remember the post but i think someone has tried a sim card in the r800x and said that it has been fully disabled.
I'm in Singapore, R800i's here as well - nice thing about buying a phone here, all are carrier unlocked / government considers it illegal [monopoly] for carriers to sign exclusive deals... although I might get caned for exporting them.
Same here. No companies should be allowed to lock phones to their networks.
However some companies have been cheeky and released different phones that don't support the other carriers cell tower transmission.
I can confirm the R800at is the AT&T version. It even has the AT&T boot animation and comes loaded with 2.3.3.
I got mine in the mail today off ebay. So far, I am really enjoying it. I get H+ as my connection icon, and which is different.

You can root the Verizon model. If it is on anything higher than 2.3.3 you just have to flashtool back to 2.3.3 and then run super one click.

Im aussie too and the 800i is/was sold here for the optus/vodaphone network. You can use the 800i on telstra but you can only get 2g, no 3g goodness due to the frequencys used.

[Q] will lt18i's 3g work on usa if i dump an lt18a rom in it?

I saw alsaqr's ealier post that he unlocked japanese version of lt15i and dumped an lt15a rom into it and he made it work on AT&T's 3g network on April which lt15a hasn't been out yet at April.
Therefore i was wondering if i buy unlocked lt18i and do exactly what alsapr did, which dump an lt18a rom to unlocked lt18i device, will it's 3g work on AT&T?
I know there is lt15a is out but i want to get white version and would be nice to have little bit better version than original one since global version is out already.
or should i just buy an lt15a since there isn't too much difference other than 1.4Ghz processor and 2D&3D panorama camera function.
(and proceeder device is about $50 cheaper)
Can anyone help me out..?
Dumping an 'A' rom onto 'i' hardware wont help, mate. People with AT&T usually dump 'i' roms onto their 'A' hardware (that supports AT&T 850/1900 MHz UMTS) just to get faster updates and it doesn't change 3G bands (HW can't be altered by SW). So in a nutshell, hardware version is the only concern when you're worried about your carrier's 3G compatibility. You can flash any kind of rom ('a', 'i', 'custom') onto an 'A' hardware and I'm pretty sure it'll support ATT UMTS. I'm actually waiting for LT18A to come out as well
By the way, I already have an Arc (LT15A). I need another phone anyway, so I'll get an Arc S. But you should check the link
.xperiablog.net/2011/10/17/xperia-arc-s-review-benchmarks-galore/
it'll help you decide which one you need. electronicsshowplace.com is selling LT15A for an incredible $370 price.

Hope this helps.

Beside the processor and camera features, I think there is another major upgrade on Arc S- HSPDA has been boosted to 14mbps (from Arc's 7 mbps). So an LT18A might get better data speed on ATT 3.5G network (they call it 4G though!) . I've an ATT xperia play 4G. Its data speed is a little faster than my LT15A. But if you are going to use wifi most of the times - don't even bother about this difference.

[Q] T-Mo Galaxy S II t989 in Mexico City, Please Help

Alright trusted posters, I need some help/advice. I have indeed searched the threads and nothing yet seems to be covering my question:
I am currently in the US and using juggernauts 4.1, with the faux123 kernel 7b5. I have just contacted tmo to try to recieve an unlock code for my sgs2 because i will be traveling to mexico city. Here is my question:
I want to update my radio to see if it may aid in some reception glitches that arise in my (home) area due to it being fairy rural, however i do not want to flash a radio that may not work in mexico city with one of their carriers. Does anyone know what radio might be best in mexico? Any radio that i should avoid? I am also curious to know if i can unlock my phone with my current rom configuration or if i should revert back to stock to unlock the phone. Any advice helps. Thank you all!
u should be able to unlock it still and for radio what service will u be using out in mexico ? telcel, movistar ? if they are even still around hahah
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Ok you were right about the unlocking. I contacted tmobile yesterday and they were able to send me the unlock code. I used a friends sim from at&t and unlocked it with success.
In regards to the cell company in Mexico it is looking very likely that I will use telcel. They use 850 and 1900 frequencies so the phone itself should be fine with the current radio UVKID, but from I have read I think I should update. Thoughts? Thanks again!
U should be fine I think but just for back up download another and leave it in u sd card can't go wrong with being prepared
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
yep i just updated the baseband form UVKID to UVKL1 and it works flawlessly. I also read the the telus baseband allows for dual channeling with 850 and 1900 mhz frequencies so maybe when im down there i will flash to that to utilize mexicos frequencies. Thanks again!

[Q] Actual differences (HW/Kernel/firmware/software) between R800i and R800a-at

I've seen the threads saying the difference is just the regions and where they come from, but is there ANY actual hardware/kernel/firmware/software(excluding bloatware) differences between these phones?
Reason I'm asking if because I'm trying to get SE.Tweaked working on my Play. And based on the outcome and people posting on their thread, people with R800i phones are having no problems, but people with R800a and R800at phones are getting problems.
They operate on different HSPDA(3g) bands.
r800i: 900/2100
r800a/at: 850/1900
I do believe all models are quadband GSM though. So you should have basic calling/texting no matter where so long as you have the right APN's.
Im guessing SE.Tweaked is a rom. Honestly just try it, You can always flash back to your stock, just grab it from the compilation thread.

New Xperia Play - Internation Phone - Wont Work On Koodo Ontario/Canada!?

Hi,
First off ive been doing some research about the phone, maybe not enough.
I ordered one off Amazon.ca...It said r800i (unlocked) I thought, Great! i can pop my SIM from Koodo and itll run smooth and ill have everything I want and maybe soon ill start upgrading it too..
I received the phone today, I was so happy, but my SIM wont catch. Noones will.. not from Rogers, Wind, Bell, or other Koodo Members..
I hope I did not make a grave error in ordering this phone, it cost me some coin but I was totally thinking it would be worth it...
please please tell me there is something I can do to make this damn thing work on my carrier or even any other from the area..
Is there anybody here who may have had the same issue.. ??
Is there anybody from Toronto who has an Xperia and may be able to assist??
:S:S:S:S lol fml
plz help
Yours truly,

Maybe your network doesn't use a compatible frequency

Do you mean that you don't have any signal at all or just the internet/MMS don't work?
No its not accepting my Sim.. half the time it won't even register that its there..theres no unlock code for the sim either..
it'll say something like this network is unavailable to you and all that it provides is access to emergency calls only... :s
Your phone does not support Koodo's frequency
R800i works on 900MHz and 2100MHz
R800a works on 800MHz 850MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz
Koodo does not support the 900MHZ + 2100MHZ frequency. Koodo only uses the 850MHz and 1900MHz so if you purchased a R800a Xperia play then it would work.
I do not believe any CAN carriers will work with the R800i. I may be wrong but check out this thread;

Like people have said r800a will work, and for the record r800i does work in Canada. The problem is it doesnt support the frequency used for 3g here, and since Telus/Koodoo don't use 2g towers you'll get no signal. I know Rogers/Fido works (since its what I have), not sure about Bell, and I think Virgin uses Telus towers.

The r800i did not connect to Several attempts of Rogers Sim cards.
It does not pick up on any of the carriers in toronto area.
Im hoping that the r800a that I ordered will in fact grab my SIM as I am already frustrated and just want the phone.
