[Q] Root Incredible 3? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to Root the Dinc 3? If not yet can one reasonably expect a solution anytime soon or has Verizon found a way to cripple this (for me at least) mission critical modification>
Thanks

It hasn't been rooted..im sure if/when it's released, probably q1 or q2 of 2012 someone will end up finding out how to root it.

Could I get a link to the Inc3? The Inc 2 just came out...
Oh maybe you meant the Moto Droid 3. wrong forum bud.

HTC announced in May that they will no longer be locking their boot loaders so when and if a dinc 3 does come out it shouldn't be a problem.

Rooting has nothing to do with the bootloader. Besides that, OP is completely oblivious to what he's even talking about.

Unlocked bootloader = Root. Once u unlock the bootloader you can put whatever you want onto your phone, i.e. clockwork mod and rooted roms.

Unlocked bootloader does NOT equal root

If u unlock the bootloader you can almost guarantee root, because you can flash whatever you want. Therefore unlocked bootloader = root...
You are right though, root does not = unlocked bootloader.

Unlocked bootloader is so you can put custom recovery and flash images. Root is having su permissions in Android OS.

I know this...my point is that getting root after HTC unlocks the bootloader will be as easy as flashing a custom recovery and a rom with su. There shouldn't be any need to find exploits to gain root.
Ex.
Fastboot oem unlock
Flash clockwork from bootloader
Wipe and flash custom Rom of choice.

Aren't the only devices that can be "fastboot OEM unlock"ed developer devices like the nexus and xoom? I know that other devices that don't have encrypted bootloaders can usually be rooted easily but I thought it was still more of a process than a simple ADB command.

If HTC really allows people to unlock their device, that might be one possible method they use. Personally I think they will try and find someway to permanently mark the bootloaders are unlocked so they can make sure the carriers can void warrenties (Much like the Nexus One had a picture of a lock to show if you unlocked your bootloader). I'm sure everyone read it but here's HTC's latest status update. http://www.facebook.com/notes/htc/update-on-bootloaders/10150305151453084

It'll be interesting to see what they do. Realistically, they could just leak the unlockable bootloaders and the good folks here on xda would take care of the rest..
It would be disappointing to me if they included some sort of warranty voiding measure as I don't see why the warranty wouldn't still apply to the hardware.

You'd need an exploit in ICS 4.0.3 itself to do that and we don't currently have one.

you cant do root here easy way because HTC doesnt wont us to do so. ... thats all and simple as that. with another brands like samsung is the process short and easy. blaim HTC ...
android is open source... ICS 4.0.3 its not the problem at all!
If you really want root follow the tutorial at htcdev.com to unlock your bootloader and then follow one of the tutorials on how to install a custom rom (those are basically always rooted)... I'd wait for an S-OFF though.
Some pretty useful guides in Development section...
I found them fairly straight forward with no hi-cups along the way.
Always prefer a challenge over a click of a button

Not sure what you're on but you can't root a Samsung phone from inside Android without using an exploit which is exactly the same as HTC and what the OP was asking for. You need to restart the Samsung and put it into the bootloader same as on a HTC.

Not if you use HTCdev to unlock your bootloader, they keep a log of your device, regardless if you re-lock it.
They'll still replace your device if it's a hardware problem though.

As long as you revert back to stock rom and flash stock recovery you should be fine. Don't see the need to relock as it'll just show unlocked what signs will we have that we've flashed a custom firmware? On SGS devices we had a count number but using a jig we could wipe this back to zero and return to complete stock.

Bootloader locked on S4?!

The S4 has a locked bootloader according to Engadget..
If you're hoping to run custom ROMs in place of TouchWiz, you may have to wait for a little while since Samsung has confirmed to us that the bootloader is locked
Why would Samsung start doing this out of the blue? Their devices have always been very easy to root and customize. Seems a little odd that they would do this.
Ok, you could post in the S4 thread itself since it exists as of a little while ago, or you could post in the Off Topic other devices thread since this forum is for the S3

Not that I'm a big supporter of HTC or anything, but their newest Bootloader unlock lets you flash kernels via recovery, even with S-On. The only limitations is flashing modified radios without HTC's signature.

I believe THIS is the article the OP is referring to. But as CNexus said, it might not be locked on Sprint. But honestly it doesn't matter to me. I will not be Upgrading to the S4. It really doesn't blow me out of the water with Features, Screen, or anything else. Not to mention eventually most of those new features we will be able to have on our S3's .

Ok well, thats not right. On HTC devices (only exception I know of is the EVO 4G), having s-on makes the boot partition unwriteable, except via fastboot and some other hacks
I just got finished helping this guy get his phone booting again. He flashed a rom for the international HTC One and was bootlooping even after flashing another rom. Fastbooting the boot.img fixed him right up.

People have been asking almost everyday for an unlock method in the Galaxy S4 forums for about 9 months now with no luck so unfortunately asking doesn't seem to get any better results
I don't know why but after I upgraded (OTA) to 4.4 my phone is now unlocked and S-Off. My contract was up a week earlier and I called regarding an unlock token but was told I needed to have a third party do it. Totally contrary to the Agreement the 4 majors had with the gov't in December over unlocking phones when contracts were up. So I'm just hanging out waiting for one of the resident masters to figure out a root.

If you're unlocked and s-off all you need to do is flash a recovery like TWRP and then flash a prerooted rom (most are pre rooted). It's the getting S-off part that many are still waiting to get figured out. You're free to flash away.

I'd be up for someone creating a general Q&A for this phone. It would have helped me quite a bit when I was just starting. I know enough to get one started but I'd feel better if I could get more experienced people contributing to it.

Ya, I think you can just flash a superuser.zip in recovery (you will need to flash a recovery first. Either TWRP or CWM...I prefer TWRP). It's been awhile, but I know it's not hard. There used to be a little tutorial in OP of the Rumrunner thread on how to gain root but I'm not sure if it's there anymore.

you "gathered" wrong..
dev's usually release things when they get them working perfectly, and have a safe way for N00bs to install things without immediately bricking their precious devices.
"Universal" bootloader tool is a pipe dream so dont hold your breath waiting for that
Rumors are just that; rumors, so when your phone's bootloader gets unlocked, you will surely know for sure; until then, its all just SWAG..

They are looking for a universal root for all the variants.
They are also trying to unlock all the variants.
They think that unlocking one variant might allow the unlocking of other variants, but not necessarily all variants.
They are not looking for a 'universal' unlock in the same way that they are looking for a 'universal' root.

T-Mobile is the only one with the bootloader unlocked so they have full access to using recovery and roms, I don't know if other variants are using a recovery yet since I am a vs985 (verizon) user I don't watch them closely
For vs985 we can't get into fastboot mode because verizon decided to remove or disable it, so we can't use tethered recovery (temporarily booting the recovery from adb shell)
I can tell you that Recovery's aren't hard to make at all. its just we don't have a way to use them right now &
Roms will quickly follow after Recovery's are able to be flashed

I'm really excited about it , because when I bought my g3 I left my note 2 for experiments, and hell isn't the name for what my oldie note went through.

no news, this are older "news". you can find them in at&t lg3 forum section with forum search.
be patient, the devs don't like to get stressed and the whole xda drama about unlock.
jcase already said he is able to run custom images but time is the problem to release it. when everyone is stressing them, they will lose interest to unlock under pressure.
when it's ready you will know it. until release be quiet please. thanks.
There's the "news"
