[Q] TP2 drops sync after a short while - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I've read a number of posts that deal with problems syncing, but none that matches exactly the problem I'm having.
When initially connected via USB, everything goes according to plan: the icons on the device and in Windows both show the connection, the sounds alert me to the handshake having been successful, and the device and PC sync. This state lasts a varying amount of time, usually about a half an hour or so. Then, without the device being touched, the ActiveSync icon on the PC goes grey, and the "connection dropped" sound on the PC is played. Nonetheless, power is still being transferred, and the charging light (orange then green) is still lit. If I disconnect and reconnect, the same pattern occurs every sing time. I've tried with a number of USB cables, always with the same behaviour.
Note that the device is out of warranty by now, so the lest desirable response is "send it back to HTC for repair".
[ edit ] Forgot to mention: Yes, I gently cleaned out all the pocket fluff that had connected in the mini USB connector on the device, but have not attempted a more prodigious cleaning.

Really? No one else has experienced this problem?

I know you may not want to here this, but that sounds an awful lot like a symptom of a faulty USB port on the device. One way to test it is to flash the latest stock ROM for your carrier/device model and see if it works with that. If it doesn't, then you'll need to learn to solder to replace the USB port. If it does work, then you've got some troubleshooting to do on your current ROM to figure out what is causing the connection to drop.
Also, in the rare case that you are already on a stock ROM, you'll need to reflash it and test it from scratch without anything installed.

Yes, Bob, I am on the stock ROM and yes, you are right, I don't want to hear anything about flashing -- even less about soldering. I, too, suspected that it might me a hardware issue with the USB port. I guess it's time to start shopping for a new device! [ sigh ]

I have had 2 tp2's, and my wife has also had one, and every single one of them has had the same issue. It will be plugged in, working fine, synced fine, and one small tap of the wire, computer, or phone will end the sync. It could just be that the mini port is ****. With that said, don't move your phone when it is synced...

my mini port has problem syncing. it's fine for TV output and headphones. but has same problem as you describe - so now I always use BT to sync/copy files instead of USB.

Ah well, have been looking around for the next great device. There's word that AT&T will get the HTC Sensation, but nothing confirmed.

Just wondering here if you tried sync with another system - same device.
At work I never had issues, but on the road with my Acer laptop I began having the same symptoms you describe, the usb ports on this (fully updated system) just won't enable proper sync (miss my Dell). Well I'm sure you thought of this but just a thought.

If hardware fault, try to change a new cable first. Usually the cable will tear out faster than the port on board.

Annoying sync problems

I am just wondering if I am alone with this problem because I can't find anyone with similar problems.
When I put the phone in the cradle when its off, after a minute or so the phone turns on and ActiveSync starts. This is obviously very annoying because it syncs when I don't even want it to. I have never had this problem with my wallaby only my blue angel.
I have gone throught the settings and turned off any automatic sync options but still it does it. Have I missed any options or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks, Ian
Not to be one of those 'oh! I have that problem, too!', but you asked if any others are having this problem, sooooo....
I've got the same problem! I notice that this happened with other USB devices, too. I had an IPAQ that did the same thing. It would power up when connected to the USB, even after a few hours.
What I think is happening is this:
I think that the USB lines are separate from the lines that the charger connects to (someone correct me on this?). There are 2 lines on USB for voltage, the other 2 are signal I think. So, when the device sees a voltage on the USB line (like when you first plug it in), it turns on. Perhaps the USB is changing state for some reason, causing the thing to turn on?
To keep it from sync-ing (I just want it to charge), I kill WCESMgr.exe and wcescomm.exe to stop activestynk. But then something even more annoying starts to happen if the phone is left on... windows constantly connects the USB and then disconnects... over, and over, and over...
What the heck?
At least somebody else is having the same issues
I came to the same kind of conclusion as you I think. As far as I know its a driver/hardware problem on the USB side, where the USB 'wakes' every now and again, in turn powering on the phone.
I am going to update my USB drivers and see if it makes a difference.
You can also open connection settings in activestink and remove the tick in the box marked "Allow USB connection with this computer".

No sound, no sync

Hello,
If there is a thread about this subject, please direct me to it because I couldn't find it.
I have an XDA Cosmo running on WM6.1 (ricky's)
All was reasonably fine untill this sunday. All of a sudden it doesn't make any sound anymore and there is the headphone symbol displayed at the top. When I plug in a headphone, I can hear to that offcourse.
It is also very hard to sync it with my computer. I have to try dozen's of times.
I'm guessing that there is something wrong with the connector. Do you have any suggestions?
The strangest thing is that when I reboot my phone, it doesn't occur untill i plug something into the mini-usb connector.
Another strange thing was that it changed the colour of the homescreen automaticly overnight. I don't think the two problems are related, so any suggestions for this one?
yesterday, completely out of the blue, my phone had the speakerphone all the time on. I couldn't get it normal again. Then, later that day, the headphone symbol reappeared, so I couldn't make a call anymore.
When I connect it to my computer today, it keeps on switching between connected and not-connected for 2 minutes and then decides to be not connected. Even when I leave the room and there are no noticeable vibrations that could cause a bad connection.
Anyone has an idea? Because the phone is useless right now and I can't flash another rom when I can't connect it to my computer.
Greetings and thanks a lot for any piece of information.

turn off bluetooth
Bluetooth hasn't been on the last couple of months, so I don't think that that is the problem

Tilt 2 Lost USB Connectivity

I have a 2month old Tilt 2. Plenty of apps and games and such, ran fine, had some memory issues with it running high on memory usage, so I downloaded and ran some fixes suggested on this site, (sd fix/tilt 2 data fix/memory leak mod/internet push) and while those sped up the unit, they also caused a few issues like with my battery usage, so I uninstalled them. Now I don't know if it coincides directly with my installation of those programs, but afterwards, when I plug in my phone through usb, it no longer pops up asking if I want to run activesync, usb, internet sharing. the orange light comes on and it will charge, but no data connection. Here is what I have tried so far to fix it:
Unchecked/rechecked the box for "ask me for connection"
Confirmed usb-pc connection is selected
Ran SKTools and checked notifications and redid Activesync
Ran MemMaid and did the same thing with notifications with Activesync
Used 3 different usb cables and 4 different pc's, different OS's.
Performed a HARD reset, STILL wouldn't connect immediately after reset.
I've looked up every thread in this forum and done everything suggested so far but no luck. I highly doubt that it's a hardware breakage of any kind, I'm always EXTREMELY careful plugging anything into the usb jack and 95% of the time I use a cradle.
I'm hoping someone out there has SOME idea of how to fix this. One thing of note. Someone suggested holding down the volume-down button while doing a soft-reset and when i did this, it came up with a page of jibberish but at the bottom of the screen in the dead center it said "serial". I don't know if that means something, but there you go. I was/am able to still use activesync via bluetooth, but I need my usb connectivity back.

Take a look at the USB plug on the phone. Make sure all of the conductors are lined up and straight. I had a Tilt that had the same symptoms as yours. It turned out to be the plug itself.
It's not the best design they could have come up with.
The phone is barely 2 months old and I've tried 3 different usb cables and the cradle that it usually sits in, none of which work even when wiggled slightly. I've also used jewelry magnifying and tweezers to check and all of the gold contact lines are still straight and intact.
Any other ideas?
I had this happen last autumn and ended up having to send it back to HTC who fitted a new USB connector.
Funnily enough the device went wonky on me a few days ago. I could see I had 4 email accounts set up on the home page but when I went in to my email I could only access the Exchange Email and not the other 3 IMAP accounts. And since then I have, again, been unable to sync by USB. I have tried everything similar to what you mentioned but with no luck.
I wonder if it is the 3rd party car charger cable I use as I remember previous tilt models had problems where the USB port got blown by some 3rd party charges. I think the Brodit car cradle was bad for doing this.

[SOLVED]Computer see's device for a few seconds, then disconnects.

Interesting problem I have had on and off. When I plug my phone into my desktop, it will connect normally, then a few seconds later it acts like I unplugged it. It's not the rom as it does it in recovery as well(both with usb-ms activated and without). I have HTC Sync installed. Rebooting either the computer and/or phone doesn't fix it, it just goes away after awhile and starts working again. I've experienced the problem FAR less when connecting it to my laptop, it will typically work there and not on my desktop when the problem crops up.
it's like this problem but it's not constantly http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711616
-Edit- the device also doesn't show it's charging even when it 'disconnects'
I have the same problem. just keeps discontenting over and over it sees it for a few seconds then disconnects reconnects then off again.

Mine doesn't reconnect, it 'disconnects' and stays that way(as if i unplugged it) until i actually do unplug it and reconnect it.

I was having the same problem on my MacBook until I realized the MacBook must be plugged into power. Once plugged in everything was good. I wonder if the Evo demands more power through USB then other devices.
Yeah, sounds like a power issue to me. If you're using a USB port on a hub or on a keyboard, try one on the PC itself. Also, it could be a slow USB port or a bad cable if you are continuing to have issues. Try another computer if you can, and if you still have the problem try a different cable. Still have the issue, reflash (if you're running a custom rom) or contact Sprint for service.
Same issue here, but on a desktop PC (Dell Studio XPS) using the front-mounted USB port (not a hub). Keeps disconnecting/reconnecting, but often takes 10-15 minutes between cycles. Using stock ROM (for now, at least). Will try other ports & another PC and will report back.
Already tried different ports, only motherboard ports
Rom doesn't matter as the problem exists in both android and recovery
Don't have a different cable, however the same cable will work fine on my laptop then not work on my desktop

If it works on a laptop, but not the desktop, then it appears to be an issue with your desktop. Any other USB devices doing it?
I would check your motherboards manufacturer and make sure you've got the right USB drivers, a bios update might be in order as well.
But before all that, I've got an idea. First and foremost, try this:
Go to device manage (either from control panel, right-clicking my computer and going to properties, or searching for devmgmt.msc in the start menu search.)
Navigate down to Universal Serial Bus controllers, double click on USB Root Hub (you probably have 1 for every USB Port, so you may have to do them all.)
Click on the Power Management tab, and uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." check box and see if that solves your problem.
i had this issue on my hero. it was corrected for me after i did a wipe of data and cache. i restored from titanium afterwards. YMMV
good luck
one thing you might try is disabling sense and using the android launcher. then reset the phone. once it boots up try and connect it to your pc. This was how I got mine to connect. when I was using the sense launcher it somehow blocked that options screen and the default I selected wouldn't stick. once I got the connection to my pc working this way I was able to re-enable sense and it's worked perfectly ever since.
I do not take credit for this fix, someone else on here told me to try this n it worked perfectly.

it was nothing with the rom, since it was doing the same thing in recovery.
it turned out to be the short little usb extender cable that was going a foot and ahalf from behind my pc to the side so i could plug it in easier.

I can confirm this works on my HTC Desire - had been racking up my brains for the past couple of days now with no solution! Thanks a lot. This is on PC with Win7 Ultimate.

[Q] Evo usb not recognized AT ALL

Whenever I plug my phone into my computer now all it does it show the little charging light in the top left corner of the EVO, and not the notification asking to turn on usb storage in the pull down menu, or give any errors, and nothing pops up on the computer.
Recently, I started to have usb problems where the notification on the phone was flashing on and off and the usb connected sound on the computer kept going off (like the phone was connecting and disconnecting to the usb port on the computer every second), but I thought this was a cable problem and since I didn't need usb at that moment, I brushed it off.
I'm pretty sure my phone still charges fine because the light goes on. No, It isn't a problem with the cables or the computers because i've tried multiple cables and computers. I don't understand what the problem is because my charging still works fine and I don't get error messages, it's just that usb won't connect at all anymore

If that doesn't work, you may have a hardware defect, and it'd be best to unroot and take it to sprint.
