PNY 16GB and 32GB microsd cards - General Accessories

Has anyone actually compared these 2 cards?
1) Neweggs Item # N82E16820178381
2) Amazon's P-SDU16G10TEFS2
They seem to be some of the best deals out there for larger size microsd cards.
I bought the 32GB model from Newegg for $50 when it was in stock. But then, I started seeing a lot of reviews that the card writes less than 7mb/s. Now I am seeing some reviews that the card writes 10mb/s which isn't as bad. Not sure which reviews to rely on.
It looks like Best Buy had the 16GB version a few weeks ago for $30 and Amazon sells it for $32 (although I am not sure if the model #s are the same since there are apparently 2 different models of the 16GB version)
The 16GB card seems to write a lot faster at 15-16 mb/s according to one Amazon review.
I plan on using this with my Android tablet to copy movie, music, and photo files. The movie files are typically quite large so the faster, the better. I think I can get by with the 16GB card in terms of size, so if its a lot faster, I may want to return the Newegg card. If painfully slow, I don't want the 32GB version. But I am not sure if I am really going to see much difference between the 2.
Interestingly, the 16GB model number ends in TEFS2 and the 32GB model number ends in TEFM1. There is also a 16GB version of the TEFM1. Does anyone know what the difference is between these models (TEFS2 versus TEFM1)?
Anyone else also having difficulty deciding between these 2?

Yeah, i have thogtht about this, but i didn't write it down.

32GB MicroSD - working in X10

Just in case anybody was wanting a hands on confirmation....
How much did that cost you?
$199US direct from Sandisk US online store (selling it exclusively at release, and still exclusive through them but also available from their UK store, problems with stock currently). I got it shipped to NZ using Shipito, which is an excellent service for us non-US residents.
Expensive, but then I've had the money saved over a year now since the 32GB cards were meant to be released ages ago!
Why the hell did you pay that sum of money for card !?!? )) DO you really need it or just for fun ? Because maybe it would be smarter to buy now 16 Gb for like 50$ and when that become small, in year or two, buy 32 Gb for 50-100$, because that would be the price in 2 years....but cheers to your purchase
You have no idea how sick I was of not having all my music on the phone, along with room for apps etc. I've had a 16GB card since their first release and its chafed continually since then.
Besides, 32GB cards were expected ages ago, so I've had the money saved! I budgetted to pay even more to be honest, and still would have made the purchase in a heart beat if they had turned as expensive as I had estimated...
Then enjoy it !
thanks on confirmation ,i really wanted it
I have heard some noise about the 32gb not working for what ever reason. I know we have had one user claim that it is working on there device. Is there anyone else who has had problems with the 32gb? Or, are there any other success stories to be heard?

What 'noise' have you heard ? I know personally of someone who has 32GB card in his phone and it is working fine. I have seen two users on here sucessfully claim to be using 32GB cards in their X10.

" I know personally of someone who has 32GB card in his phone and it is working fine." This is what I am looking for, thank you. The rest was just noise.
Anyone else have any actual personal experience of the 32gb microSD working or not?
Yes, I've not had any major issues with a SanDisk 32gb card, a couple of issues with it not mouting correctly when trying to connect it to my computer and use it as removable storage but I get this occationally with the supplied 8gb card too.
Tested with my friends to start off with, and I've since been out and bought my own, you can buy and use with confidence, using mine mostly to store movies (only so I can showcase the phone - I find myself daily needing to justify why I didnt buy a Desire...).
Currently only about a hundred meg free.
It will become a lot more useful once the phone is rooted.
£100 for a SD card is a lot of money... If I were to do it again I probably wouldnt have bought it when I did, knowing my luck by the time we've rooted it they'll prolly be a third of the price!

I can also confirm that 32 GB SDHC MicroSD cards works well with X10.
...and I can confirm that there are 32 GB MicroSD cards out on the market that does NOT follow SDHC (SD 2.00) specifications, and might therefor be incompatible with the X10.
I was careless and happened to get my hands on one of these non-SDHC 32 GB cards.
SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacit) cards does not work as far as I know of.
it seems that the SD card is cheap in China........i wanna a 16G one
China SD cards
I have read in message boards that china is spoofing the settings on the card to make the phone believe it is a 32gig card, and most of the time people get the card, stick it in the phone see 32 GB and give positive feedback to find out later that after 16gigs it craps out and they lose all their data. I would be VERY wary of a 25$ card from china. If you look at the pictures of the china cards, it used to be that there was a round sticker with 32GB written on the packaging. Probably over 16GB... but now the pictures on Ebay are all of a generic white background micro SD card with 32GB written on it.

No this isn't one of those 32GB for $20 thread but it's a known MFG at a reputable website (I've ordered from them a number of times). Best deal I've been able to find.
PQI 16GB MicroSDHC

For those Sandisk fans out there:

Newegg has this one for $45
And before you get caught up on that Class 2 vs Class X, there is no rigid adherence to this standard. Search the web and you can find examples of Class 2 cards spanking so called Class 6 cards etc... For a phone this is fast enough.

Thanks for the links everyone!
Boy I don't know a class 2 card kinda sucks. Although 30 bucks is a good deal. Thanks OP.
I just don't get it. We all buy a truly awesome phone. (This is my first Android OS phone. I was using Palm Treo's with Windows; 700wx and 800w.) But yet, all the threads about putting cheap components in it. I fully understand trying to save a buck as no one wants to pay full price. I ordered my Sandisk 32GB microSD card on 7/22/2010, when no store had them and most online stores were back ordered, from Verizon. Cheapest price for item was $199.99 on Sandisk.com (and even they were back ordered). I got it for the same price you can today online from Verizon, $99.99. Except, I got it from the local brick & mortar and it's $149.99 via this method now.
I'm not sure these are no name off brand cheap componets. If you search around you'll seen plenty of reviews on respectable sites where so called premium Class 10 cards get romped by less expensive cards. These are quality cards just inexpensive.
From everything I've read your phone can't take advantage of a class 10 anyway so why spend the extra money?
The Fry's is a great deal but I never buy anything based on a MIR price.
lol then you got ripped off.
When it comes to flash memory buy whatever is cheapest. Read speeds hardly vary. Write speeds are what the class is referring to and isn't very important in our phones. You wont notice an apreciable difference. It can use the nand as a buffer if it needs to write faster anyways say for video recording in hd.

WOW that right there has got to be the most incompetent statement of the day. No I am not calling you stupid, I am saying the comment shows lack of flash memory knowledge.
Cheap gets you cheap, and that’s a fact.
Flash memory is very volatile, and when you buy cheap flash, you get cards that die quickly, or are partially dead out of the box.
i have gotten cheap before and every time i got burnt. Most memorable was a 4GB card that would only hold 2 GB because anything past that caused the card to bomb out. Up to 2 GB it worked fine.
Cheap flash will absolutely cause you troubles, and we already know that a goofy or bad memory card in these phones will cause you to have all types of whacky issues. Including but not limited to reboots, lockups, and bad flashes, or inability to flash the phone.

Anybody tried this 32 gb sd card? Awefully cheap, is it worth it?

Found this on Ebay, don't know though. It comes out of Shanghai and the price is cheap. I'm more worried about cheap crap wrecking my phone. Anybody try one of these yet?
http://cgi.ebay.com/SanDisk-32GB-mi...gital_Camera_Memory_Cards&hash=item1e5e54d767
it won't wreck your phone, but it will probably die after a few weeks - if that long. If you but it, be prepared to throw away your money at some point and all the data on the card.
SanDisk probably won't warranty it because it is probably counterfeit.
don't think u ever will get it
last 16gb card i bought over ebay was about 7€cheaper then all the rest and i never saw it - got money back by paypal thats why i tried (and he had about 100 positive votings).
this seems to be about 50€ cheaper then a normal 32GB card and he has 0 votings - so he propably tires to get the money and vanish into dust before Paypal can claim the money from him.
would buy something more recent.
I bought a 16gb kingston class 4 on amazon, it was around 45$, and they had a promo that if you signed up for an amazon credit card you get 30$ off your first bill. so bought it and paid it off for 15$.
Honestly, with Froyo coming soon and apps2sd, Id really reccomend investing in a good class 4 or 6. The faster the speed of the card, the faster your phone will be able to pull and push data to it.
Another note, my class 4 can move large files at about 8-9 mb/s, but if there are many small files it will only run about 3 mb/s, so Id really recommend a reputable brand. That is not to say the kingston doesnt work good, just to say one of those cheapo 30$ cards advertising class 6 will probably run much slower and break apart quickly
Good point about the speed issue. Can't wait for Froyo.

Class ratings apply to write speeds not read speeds. Theoretically you can write faster to higher class cards, but this usually applies to direct writes on the device (camcorder recording to card) not USB between phone and PC. The USB copies (PC to phone) may be faster, but you have a additional overhead of the USB bus.
Buy a name brand card. I have an 8Gb Sandisk class 2 and it works great for Camera, camcorder, and anything else i want to do with the phone software. My 1080P camcorder has class 6 cards, but it requires it.
I'd steer clear from buying memory cards/ usb flash drives on eBay. I've seen way too many people get scammed on getting what they thought was a 16gb flash drive and end up with a 128mb stick with 16gb screenprinted on it. These microSD's are no different.

Actually I tested this using the sdhc adapter directly to the SD card slot. so no USB/phone interface interfering here. And again, thats what I was stressing. Buy a name brand card, probably a class 4 or 6 considering the move to froyo.

So you got the same MB/s throughput with the card reader as well as the phone connected to the PC? Still puts the USB bus in the way. EDIT - NM I see what you were measuring.
I wonder what the transfer rate is on the phone - back and forth between internal SD and external SD.
Huh, interesting concept. I dont even know of a way to test that
I bought a 32gig card from China for 18 bucks shipped. 1st time I've been scammed on ebay. It seemed to show up as a 32gig, but the phone wouldn't recognize it and wanted to format it....sure thing I figured. Now it shows as an 8mb card that won't format no matter what I do. I disputed it to paypal after the auction/seller disappeared on ebay, but they want me to send it back to China to refund. I considered this might happen and was willing to risk 20 bucks, but it didn't end up well. The funniest part was that it showed up in Kingston packaging, but the date was 2008. I'm pretty sure 32 gig microSD's didn't even exist in 2008.
Thats terrible!! well good luck getting your money back... Lol so I guess if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Id just stick with trustworthy sellers, brands, and sites, and look for good deals!

I am not sure where you found this - but the official specs call for up to 32GB card:

Many people are using 32GB cards. It is the limit of the SDHC spec, so the 16gb is probably a typo from somewhere.

Not sure if the one I purchased is the same because the item post has been removed but mine came from Beijing I believe. Came in a Kingston package which was obviously fake. Put it in my phone did a format and it showed a 32gb card. Writing files takes forever directly from the computer but everything looks good so far. Mainly using it for music.

yes there are different speeds. the class is the speed. so there is class 2,4,6,10 and i think thats it as far as i know. so class 2 would write = 2mb/s, class 4= 4mb/s, class 6= 6mb/s and last class 10= 10mb/s. that is there write speeds. so the one in ur link is a class 4 so 4mb/s. i notice it when transferring files from my pc to the micro sd card

Are the 16gb, class 10 Samsungs that seem to be flooding ebay in their bulk packaging form with the Blue lettering genuine? How are their benchmarks compared to the white lettered ones (and are they genuine, too)?

I bought a bunch in bulk packaging due to the price a few months back. Haven't run into any noticeable problems as of yet.
From my understanding, the bulk packaging may seem like illegal counterfeits, but are not. They are sold in bulk packaging to manufacturers who claim they will use them in their devices. The excess ones are then sold through retail venues (against the agreement they have with sandisk).
I bought one of the white lettered ones from a US-based seller (nextwebsales) via an auction for 10 bucks. I'll post the benches on here when I receive it.
I received the card today and it was NOT the white lettered card shown in the picture, but rather the blue lettered one. I attached a couple of pictures. The card checked out in h2testw, so no problems with the capacity. I did a few benchmarks with crystaldiskmark and attached one that seems representative of the performance. Mind you, this was done with an integrated SD card reader (so using the included adapter) on a 6-year old dell laptop running Vista 32-bit, so until I finally get an android phone (soon, my precious, soon) or a card reader for my new PC, I can't be sure these benches are completely accurate. The sequential read speed seems a bit low and nothing else looks particularly spectacular. I'm not so sure this is genuine Samsung OEM, but for 10 bucks it seems decent until I actually invest in a real 32GB card when I replace my iPhone with an android counterpart.

Nice! While I can't say I recommend buying one of these sketchy cards from eBay, I will say I don't think I got ripped off. For the performance, reliability, and warranty of some of the name brand cards it's definitely worth the premium.
For Canadians looking for a cheap 16gb Class 10 microSD card:

Only $12.99, Super cheap if you could pick it up. I just grabbed one myself.
Well, I may have to amend my previous statements about this card. I just received a $0.99 microsd card reader from eBay and let 'er rip on my desktop (Windows 7 64-bit) and it yielded much different results. This was after a quick format and plugging in the reader into a front I/O port not directly soldered to the mobo. It looks like the laptop reader/Vista was throttling the performance. If it holds up, it may be a good deal.

When transfering, my phone crashes (turns off) Running latest Stunner, have to pull the battery, dunno what the bug is, but I have to install files plugged in directly for faster transfer, kinda slow with USB Mounted anyways.

This is my biggest worries about buying microSD card with price that is "too good to be true".
I have bought many many microSD and SD cards (since the days of Windows Mobile phones) and there are tons of fake cards. I noticed that this is usually when the prices of the card is really cheap.
To the OP or whoever bought this card, what's the R/W speed? Use SD Tools from Google Play (link) to measure the speed. In the past, I have bought brand name card from even reputable seller (Amazon Prime) but Amazon themselves got FAKE card. I.e. I got a Kingston Class 6 16GB and the R/W speed is less than 1 Mbps (!!!) My Sandisk 8GB Class 4 R/W is more than 2Mbps.
Not to say bad thing about OP, but just to consider the above.

Hey thanks!
it is always a good idea to be cautious when you buy a memory card and that is why it is important to buy from a reputable store
it seems you were unfortunte to get a dud card as amazon (not amazon market) are usually a safe bet but i guess nothing is for certain in this world ... except death and taxes
Play (again not Play 'Market') are reputable also and been around for many years and i would trust them not to sell fake cards but it is their customer service that is bad. They usually discount things on a pre-release but sometimes they get the availability date wrong and so you might be left waiting. I know Amazon don't withdraw money until the item gets shipped but i don't think that is the case with play and that is where you might end up having a bad experience if they delay shipping etc
some still say a class 6 is better than 10?!!?
