[N2E] Flash back to clean stock ROM - Nook Touch Android Development

*Note: By using this method you don't have to worry about re-imaging with someone else's nook rom and overwriting your mac address and serial # with someone else's.
There are two parts to the re-flash, you must do both in this order
1. Re-imaging the PROGRAM portion of the nook.
2. Re-imaging the data portion of the nook.
Part one: Re-image the Nook Touch /system partition
Your nook must already be properly rooted for this to work. Install adb on your PC if you don't have it already. Prep your nook by installing "adb wireless" from the app store and run the app. (if you don't know how to use adb, google it)
Run the "adb wireless" app on your nook and press the "big button" and take note of your nooks ip address.
We now can connect the nook through the adb shell and manually change the BootCnt file so that the boot count is 8. This avoids the pain of manually interrupting the boot process 8 times.
connect to your nook by typing "adb connect (nook ip)" from your pc
Once you have connected to your nook, use the following commands:
adb shell
echo -n -e "\x08\x00\x00\x00" > /rom/devconf/BootCnt
reboot
Thats it for part one. Your nook will reboot and start the re-imaging process. Let it finish and reboot again.
Part two: Re-imaging the data portion of the nook
1. Go to Settings
2. Select "Device Info" under the top "Device Settings" section
3. Select "Erase & Deregister Device"
4. Select the "Erase & Deregister Device" button
5. Select the "Reset Nook" button
A Deregistration message will appear and the nook will reboot.
Upon reset a Clearing data message will appear
This may take a few minutes. The nook will reboot again once complete.
Thats it! Smell that Fresh clean stock nook!
I must give credit to nookdevs dot com. They posted this process for unrooting the nook color. The process is exactly the same for the nook touch. I am a noob on this board so I can't post links yet. I have verified this process works. I had to unroot my nook to get the Shop to work again. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Is it normal for the nook to at the very end of the process bar ? What do I do ? Did I screw it ? I am afraid to try powering it off ?

Please edit your question. I don't understand what you are asking.
Thanks

Are you asking if it is safe to turn off the nook while the progress bar is still visible? Did the progress bar freeze? Please provide more information, I don't understand your question.

Yes. It froze at the very end
Here I have attached a picture as well.

I would just power it down. There is nothing else you can do in that state. How long did you wait?

I'm having trouble getting the Market app to find the adb wireless app...any idea if there's a direct way to install it? Thanks!

If you rooted with TouchNooter than you shoud have the ADB packages installed. Using the ADB wireless makes things easier, however you can run ADB over usb. Just google "ADB over USB nook" and you will see the link for the nookdevs forum. It gives the instructions for windows, mac, and linux.
I would post the links, but I can't as of yet because I am a noob. One more post should get me to 8.

Oh yeah... I almost forgot...try this first... There is a known problem where you can't search in the android market. Just go to amazon and get the amazon android market instead. That is what I did.. and if all else falls...you can use the ADB over usb.

open up your browser on your nook and go to:

appbrain.com will probably have you set up an account before you can download it.
google is your friend.

My Unroot Method
Maybe this will work for you all too. It worked really well for me (but this is assuming you don't have the 1.0.1 update):
1 - Turn nook off and turn on pushing power button than 2 bottom buttons.
2 - Press home twice to clear data
3 - Login as normal and then go to Settings and Erase and DeRegister your Nook
4 - When nook comes back up login and register nook as normal
5 - Download http://su.barnesandnoble.com/nook/n...Dpomf5qvKtTeXxjxcgaa2cS/nook_1_0_1_update.zip and put it on the root of your nook (not SD card)
6 - Let nook apply the update
7 - That should be it.
I deregistered it after that. Rebooted. Reset. Rebooted. Every time came up stock for me to register.

Now that you upgraded to the 1.01 update, will this method still work?
Have you tried it?

I have not yet as I haven't tried rerooting it again.

[N2E][1.0][1.0.1] TouchNooter 1.6.24

This will officially not work for 1.1
What it does:
Enables ADB via uRamdisk
Installs su and Superuser.apk
Installs Busybox
Installs Button Savior
Installs Go Launcher
Installs NookColor Tools (To Enable Non-Market Installs)
Installs Gapps (Gmail, Market, Youtube, Others)
System Files that get Modified:
/system/build.prop - Enabling Google Check In
packages.xml - Allows Gapps to install properly.
framework.jar - Should allow a proper Android ID to generate.
Changes:
June 24, 2011 -
Removed: Multitouch Permission
Added: Modified framework.jar
June 22, 2011 - Fixed: Script not running at boot.
June 20, 2011 - Initial Release
Before you begin:
You must already have a registered Nook Simple Touch
You must have a Gmail/Youtube linked Account. IF you used a Gmail account for B&N Registration you should use that one for this process.
You must either have dd (Linux) or WinImage (Windows) software.
You must have an external microSDCard reader or this will not work. Do NOT use the Nook Simple Touch.
You must have enough intelligence to follow instructions.
Let's get started:
Download TouchNooter from here: touchnooter-1-6-24.zip
Linux: Unzip and use dd if=touchnooter-1-6-24.img of=/dev/sdcard
Windows: Unzip and use WinImage to "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image" to your SDcard.
Windows Alternative: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download
Power off your Nook Simple Touch.
Insert TouchNooter SDcard into your Nook Simple Touch.
Power on your Nook Simple Touch.
You should see the screen "Rooted Forever".
It will boot like normal and you should be asked to select a launcher now. (If not use Button Savior to go home. This will bring up the launcher chooser.)
That was the hard part, now to the simple stuff.
Upon boot unlock your screen.
At the Android Welcome Screen skip Sign In.
Enable Location Services when given the option.
Connect to Wifi and launch Youtube from Go Launcher's App Drawer (Or the App Drawer of your Choice).
Click the Menu button (The right one in the middle of the status bar).
Select "My Channel" and Login using your Gmail Account.
Exit Youtube and Launch Gmail from "Extras".
Sync your Gmail Account and Exit. (If it fails to sync that is fine.)
Open up Market and Accept Terms and Service.
If you made it this far your nook should be successfully Rooted. Go Download an App to make sure.
Enable Non-Market Installs by running the NookColor Tools App.
If your Youtube fails to launch Uninstall and Reinstall Youtube from /data/app
Go to Settings > Device Info > SdCard > UnMount > Format
Thanks To:
Arnold Snarb - modified framework.jar
nemith - helping me figure out getting it to run at boot.
JesusFreke - For getting root.
MrMuffin - For the original Market Hack that we're using.
Currently Working On: TouchNooter 1.11.x
I've probably screwed up, but perhaps not too badly. Tried to follow all the steps and got the system files copied to media, and then to replace the main system files, but there I got confused. I ended up rebooting without attempting to install the youtube app, which I didn't find in the download. Even now, a lot looks like it is working, but I can't even attempt to sign in to google cause I can't get a keyboard to come up to allow me to enter my user name and password. Is there any help for me, or am I a total dunce needing to start over? thanks!
EDIT: I see I am screwed -- no keyboard is coming up for me anywhere. I guess I can go through a major reset but if anyone has a suggestion to just get the keyboard back I will appreciate it.
EDIT2: Well I got past that, simply chose multitouch keyboard instead of Gingerbread in NookColor Tools.
EDIT3: But now I am stuck again as I can't sign in to a google account... says can't establish a reliable data connection to the server, even though my wifi is fine. But at least at the moment everything else is fine, though the keyboard isn't working very well (but it does work; lots of ghosting)
An .img file is being uploaded for TouchNooter 1.6.20 It'll do all the copy and edit stuff, the only thing it can't do is create an android ID.
In the "GappsAndMore" there was some keyboards which were from the NC it was just a raw pull from AN. This is more refined with things that could cause issues removed. (Like Keyboards, Framework.jars from the NC, etc.)

I'd suggest a wipe and running TouchNooter... GappsAndMore had Keyboards and stuff in it and removed the stock keyboard =\
is a wipe in the nook touch holding down the power for 20 seconds?
No you need to do a complete wipe by triggering recovery, but I don't know how to trigger recovery yet.

You could try 8 failed boots. Basically you power it on and then power it off before it fully boots. Do that 8 times and it might trigger recovery.
Confirmed this works great. I'm going to find a fix for the calendar.

I did a reset of the device back to the out of the box experience, registered with my BN account, shut down and followed the directions to the letter. I had no luck at all. It just shows the Rooted Forever screen, then boots normally is if nothing happened.
Sorry Guys and Gals. Entirely my fault. It seems a combination of my own forgetfulness and bad scripting (I forgot proper codes and methods used in AN) caused this just to do nothing. I'm uploading a version as I'm typing this and will remove "BROKEN" from the title when it's up.
Still broken. init.rc isn't running it's script properly.
Script can be ran manually with:
Code:
adb shell sh /sdcard/nooter/tmp/scripts/Nooter
Will be working on getting it to trigger properly

Hello everybody,
as there is no sub-forum for the new nook simple touch (help to get one),
all information are split on several posts in the nook color forum.
I want to create a central thread which list all the knowledge and work that is already done.

or, just update the market.
This will fix the market search too

Hi,
I'm not sure who to send this to in the xda-dev
community, but noticed that you were maintaining
the KB articles for the Nook Touch root. I tried
posting to the touchnooter dev thread, but I don't
have the requisite 10 messages, so I couldn't even
thank them.
I've been able to root my N2E with the
touchnooter root: the most recent 1.6.24. I'm
extremely happy with the results, but am having a
major concern that doesn't appear to be getting
proper coverage in that or other roots. (I initially
tried the noogie root with lesser results).
<Rant On>
IE, adb wireless/wifi access.
Nobody seems to be expounding on the fact that
it's an enormous freaking barn-door-size gaping
hole in the security of the N2E(or doing anything
to eliminate it). You yourself mention it in
passing in your KB article, but only give it a single
line.
Essentially, once these things are rooted, they
are -enormously- vulnerable if they are taken out
into the public, either at a Barnes&Noble store,
or at any other hotspot. All it takes is for a hacker
sitting there at that hotspot with a laptop, scanning
all of the IP's in that subnet for IP's that respond
to the adb port, and they can do a simple
#adb install MyFavBotController.apk
or somesuch thing. If adb pukes on them(IE, it's a
non-rooted Nook), then they just keep scanning.
Unless you're sharp and see the notification tab
popping up, you may never notice it. They can
install any freaking thing they want on your Nook.
Evetually you've got hundreds or thousands of
infected Nooks running bots, or some other fun
little thing(s) implanted on them.
Everybody seems to be incredibly happy about how
easy it makes their experimentation, and all of the
root developers seem to be focused on making sure
that adb wireless is enabled, either in the startup
scripting or even in the uRamdisk as with the
touchnooter root.
Sure, you can install the adbWireless app from the
market, and it will turn off adbWireless, but:
a) when you initially run the adbWireless app, it
doesn't even properly report that the adb wifi
function is on. It reports it as off, even though
it's actually still responding to adb connects.
So now you have to remember to turn it on,
and then back off. That does work(for a little
while).
b) it's not permanent with some roots, like the
touchnooter. I disable adb wifi with the
adbWireless app, it's off, and everything is nice
and safe? if I put my N2E through a power
cycle, guess what. It's been turned right back
on again. That's completely whacked.
1) For one thing, as an older person I may
forget to use adbWireless to keep turning
adb wifi off after power-cycles. Over and
over and over again.
2) Even if you remember, there's a window of
access during power-up that's about 30-60
seconds long before you'll be able to run
adbWireless to shut things down. A hacker
could do a lot of damage to your Nook in
that time.
3) I have heard rumors of Nooks turning
turning themselves back on after being
powered off. So now you could be in a
hotspot, your Nook could turn itself on in
your knapsack without you even knowing,
and the hacker sitting there has all the
time in the world to beat on your poor little
Nook.
It's BONEHEADED. adb Wifi should NOT EVER be
automatically turned on by the bootstrap. NEVER.
If developers of these roots want to make it easy for
the users or other devs using them, then simply
bundle the adbWireless application along with
SuperUser, Yahoo, and the other apk's they've
included in their root distro's.
Let the -users- decide when and where it's safe for
them to use adb Wifi. Devels are NOT doing them a
service by forcing adb Wifi on them, or encouraging
them to use it under dangerous circumstances.
</Rant Off>
Sorry, but I have a rooted Nook that I'd like to take
outside the confines of my home. Unfortunately,
I don't dare to now. So yah, I'm feeling cranky :-(
rev0l. -please- pass this on to any developers
you might have contacts with.
Thank you!

i dont know if someone can disable the access over adb by default...
may you can use apps like tasker or automate it to disable wifi when your accesspoint is not in range or start the adbwifi app while connecting to a public wifi.

I love Zeam.
I think that the best way to avoid the wireless adb security hole would be to enable adb over usb and disable adb wireless if it is possible.
I have read on irc someone (maybe JesusFreke) saying that we just have to do something like modifying adb or doing something else (I don't remember very well)
I'm also trying to find out how to adb with usb. In particular I'm looking to get my N2E to connect to my iPhone running MyWi 4.0. I've read that the nookdevs Ad-Hoc_WiFi wpa_supplicant file for the NC will work with the N2E, but I haven't found a way to connect with USB and I'm too scared to try it over wifi in case it goes wrong and I won't be able to connect with adb over wifi to fix it. Any help would be much appreciated.
Edit :
Managed to get ad-hoc wifi working by pushing the fixed wpa_supplicant.adhocfix file to the /system/bin/ folder with adb over wifi.
Then, I switched the wifi off on the N2E and opened terminal emulator and did the following :
Code:
su
adb shell mount -o rw,remount -t ext2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
mount
cd /system/bin
mv wpa_supplicant wpa_supplicant.old */make backup of original wpa_supplicant file/*
mv wpa_supplicant.adhocfix wpa_supplicant
chmod 755 /system/bin/wpa_supplicant
exit
I am now able to connect to my iPhone's MyWi hotspot.
For security when connecting to a public hotspot, I have installed the ttxapps wifi adb app from the android market and turned off adb over wifi, meaning I can toggle it on only when I wish to connect on my home network.
does anyone have system restore image?

I figured out how to get a full factory "re-image" of my nook touch.
I followed the instructions for the nook color here:
Method two: Set the Boot counter to 8 by typing
http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
I rooted my nook touch using touchnooter. Loaded up the amazon app store and played around for a while. But I found after I rooted the nook that the nook store didn't work any more. So i wanted to get back to factory state. I then installed the wireless adb app. I logged in to my nook using my linux pc and followed the above directions. After the re-image you have to do a data reset by going in and restoring to factory settings in the nook itself.
As soon as I gave the reboot command it started the re-image as seen in this link:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p...2E_Restore.JPG
I'm sending you this message because I'm a "noob" and can't post in the developer forums. So if you wouldn't mind reposting for the others to use.

Was anybody else able to get to "Restoring Factory Image..." dialog?
It happened to me after 20+ resets, I was just searching for bricked N2E solution and kept on pressing the button... I would like to know how to replicate this again
i tried it with the 8 times boot failure method, it brings up the factroy reset screen, but it does not the reall factory reset, root and some other stuff were still n the nook after this "factory reset" don't know..
and don't tried (or even read) the method from the pm...
too busy at the moment :/
Inspired by rmkenney12 (and rev0l), I updated the uRamdisk file from TouchNooter 1.6.24 so that adb over wi-fi does not run at boot.
Disclaimer: Don't try this unless you know how to restore your nook in case it does not work.
To install the new uRamdisk:
Unzip the attached file somewhere, then...
Code:
adb connect <nook>
adb shell mkdir /cache/boot
adb shell mount -o rw -t vfat /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /cache/boot
adb push <path>/uRamdisk /cache/boot
adb reboot
Cross your fingers and hope it works.
You will also want to download an app to turn adb on and off. Search market for 'wifi adb'.
P.S. Does anyone know specifically what needs to be changed in the uRamdisk to enable adb over usb?
This guide isn't working for me. It says that after you create a noogie sd card, just pop it in, start the nook and it will mount the 7 partitions....
What 7 partitions? They never show for me. When I start the nook with the card inside it mounts the "boot" partition which is 64.8 out of 74.7 megabytes.
That's it. That's all I see. Inside of this partition are the files that were contained in the noogie image.

[Q] Forgot Pattern Lock

Hi there,
I owned a Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean 4.2.1 version, yakjuxw (Not rooted), GSM. I activated the Pattern Lock to prevent the kids at my relatives house messing my phone. Unfortunately, I forgot the pattern and the phone stays locked out. I have tried the pattern combinations for days but failed.
I have tried to key in my Gmail account username/password but since my phone is wifi/data switched off, I cant sign in. Moreover, I am not sure whether the USB Debugging is enabled.
I have tried some 'hole' methods recommended at some forums, but it didnt work on my phone.I hope to get access to my messages/images/some files and transfer them to my pc before reset the phone to factory setting. Please help! :-|

You can reset the phone to Factory settings.
1. Turn off your phone.
2. Press vol up+vol down+power buttons till it vibrates. Now you see a dead android.
3. Navigate with your volume buttons to "Recovery Mode" and select it with the power button.
4. When its booted you should see a soort of menu.
5. Select "wipe data" (or something like that). THIS WIPES YOUR DATA AND YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE (music, pictures etc..)
6. Select reboot system now.
7. Done.

Call yourself from another phone and answer, after that your phone will probably get unlocked.
In ADB or some other way to access the file system in Recovery Mode
navigate to /data/system and
delete password.key and/or gesture.key
- reboot.
Password/Gesture Lock gone.
You can use AROMA File Manager in Recovery (would have to sideload it if you didn't pre-install it)

Good luck. Post back with your solution.

Recovery mode - debricked - yay

Great NEWS
I've been bricked for few day now.
While searching the web I found this OUYA forum post and thought it might work on th FTV too.
http://forums.ouya.tv/discussion/1380/recovery-mode
I just had to try. IT WORKED!
1 - Plug in a USB keyboard. May have to be wired.
2 - While booting - Press Alt+PrintScreen/SysRq+I
3 - Repeat 1-3 times. You should get to Update screen.
4 - Press the HOME button on the keyboard.
5 - YOU HAVE RECOVERY MODE!
I selected Factory Reset.
It took a little longer to boot. Prompted for missing remote & press Home.
Signing in NOW!
Will add pictures doon.

Update:
I rebooted to see if I could get into recovery again.
I got back on the update screen but the Home button wouldn't put me in recovery mode this time. The KB seemed dead.
I was using the keyboard connected through a hub this time. Would that matter? IDK
Could not reboot with Ctrl-Alt-Del
Pulled the power plug & replugged and it booted fine.
Hey, dude, thats amazing!
Did you tried another options?
It's possible with mac keyboard, may be alternative combination exists.
There's not printscreen button on keyboard.
Great Find! :good:
EDIT: I just got to recovery by doing this:
1- boot up normally
2- adb shell
3- su
4- reboot recovery
5- at update failed screen press home
6- PROFIT??

This is nothing new (using adb to reboot into recovery). But it's not useful when you brick the OS and there is no ADB.
The OP found the way into the recovery w/o an OS, which is pretty key to unbrick your firetv, as long as you have a working recovery partition. Now we can also do complete flashes via update from adb (which probably allows sideloading the OTA packages).

Can someone give precise instructions to navigate the "update screen menu" blind? On my TV, the menu is completely cropped out. I don't even know if it's appearing when I press Home.
Does the menu come up instantly when you press Home on the Update Failed Screen?
Is it okay to press Home several times, or does that make the menu go away/toggle?
When you press Home, is the first menu item already selected or do you need to press down once to highlight the first menu item?
To get to the factory reset options do you press: Home > Down > Down > Enter?
Also, has anyone tried the "update from ADB" option? Does this enable ADB? Is it ADB over wifi or usb only? I ask mainly because factory reseting doesn't help those with a "host file softbrick" (where a modified host file is blocking initial registration). Those people need a way to get to the host file, which factory reseting doesn't touch.

Stock recovery does not work with ADB over USB. And it doesn't have ethernet or wifi drivers. So "update from ADB", which is sideload, will not work on stock recovery.

Help, my firestick has no network capability

Hi everyone
i my friend gave me his firestick 4k the other day because he has managed to mess it up big time
He said that he followed a tech docter youtube video to sideload an app to remove bloatware, after being successful at this, he then used an app that clears your cache and closes all the apps for you, from what i can understand it sounded like the app "cleanmaster"
after doing that he immediately lost his internet connection, he said that there wasnt even a network section anymore, just a troubleshooting option, he then factory reset his stick but this didnt solve anything
ive got the stick setup now, ive looked in the network section and he was right, theres nothing, even in the my fire tv section where you can see the ip/mac/ssid etc, they all say "not connected"
ill attach pictures
Im willing to flash this somehow, or root it, install cfw anything, please help!
Try:
Select Settings > Network from the Fire TV menu, then Play/Pause on your remote, and follow the recommended steps.
If that doesn't work maybe reset the stick again.
I know one of the settings in the debloat tool turns off the ability to see new networks, resetting should have reenabled that switch.

Thanks for replying, pressing play/pause does nothing, as you can see there is nothing on the network page at all except the troubleshoot option
Factory reset doesn't work at all, doing a factory reset from the my fire tv section just makes you go back to the settings menu, using the back and right button combo does nothing either, even if you wait for the countdown to end
When he gave me the stick he had already factory reset it so there are no apps on here at all including this bloatware one you mentioned, nothing

It doesn't have to show ip address, follow the thread carefully. It involves opening up the stick, connecting it to pc (via the power cable) and shorting a resistor.
