Difference between the 2 guides to root? - Nook Touch Android Development

Hey guys just got my nook STR and really want to root it! But which of the 2 guides should I use?
this or this?

I went with your second pick
I recently rooted my Nook Touch using Touchnooter and the process couldn't have been easier. I'd reccomend that method to anyone.

Use touchnooter and keep in mind once you are up and running that the soft keys for home and other options are very hard to see on the middle right.

Another happy Touchnooter user here. Love this little guy! So cool to have DropBox to side load with.

thx guys i just rooted it and it's awesome. Just one question when it boots now shouldn't there be rooted forever :? coz mine has read forever

Install LCD Density (free here on XDA and on the market). I set it to 200 and it's perfect. And the good thing is that after reboot, everything turns to stock. I got the idea from this post.

TouchFlo Finally Working!!!!

Managed to get Touch Flo working tonight (between 5&6am), i am using Shadow as ROM, the steps i completed are as follows:
Install Instructions
1) install touchflo and softreset
2) Delete the bio.lnk in Windows/startup
3) Delete the reg file in HKLM/Software/HTC/Biotouch/Biotouch ver
4) Map Touchflo to any free button
5) Softreset
6) Start touchflo, then go to Windows folder and start Biotouch.exe
(These are exactly the steps i took, i dont know anything else, these just worked for me and i posted them in the hope they might work for someone else!!)
Usage Instructions
1) Press the hardware button you specified to start toughflo
2) Press the hardware button you specified to rotate the cube
3) Press the red call end button to stop it and get back to the main screen
If there are any hangs, uninstall TouchFlo and start again
There are 2 irritating things (very minor!!!)
1) Cant be used with finger like real touchflo i.e. cannot drag finger up to launch or down to exit (yet!!)
2) The hardware button rotates the screen as well as starting touchflo, this might not sould like much but, for example, if the last screen you were looking at was the Music/Photos/Videos page and you pressed the red call end button to get out of TouchFlo, and you want to go back to the Music/Photos/Videos page, you will press the hardware button to start TouchFlo, but at the same time as starting it, it also rotates the screen so it is on the page after the last page you were using, resulting in needing to press the hardware button once to start TouchFlo and twice more to get back to the screen you left off at.
As i said these are minor but this should work for now untill it is properly sorted out
Enjoy
Regards

i have done no modification to your alpha cab, i followed some instructions i found on your other site and they didnt work for me, black screens, massively slowed down Shadow, so i did it slightly differently and it worked first time, nice and fast and everything seems to be working!!!
As i said i am using your Shadow rom, no mods, my own software installed thru cabs, and using the instructions detailed above
I must say thanks to you for releasing the alpha for me to play with!!!
Thanks again JJ
P.S. is it ok to PM you i have afew questions that are off topic here!!

OK, this all sounds promising, but are you saying that you still cannot use your finger to do anything? That everything still needs to be done via buttons? Can you use your finger to scroll thru lists? Its progress that it is working at least, but isn't being able to use your finger the whole point? Or perhaps I'm misunderstanding you.

Dude,
First Point: it is 6:36am i have been messing with this thing since 4am, i have a disertation to research and im taking time out to do this, everyone on almost every forum(Trinity, Wizard, Hermes, other sites etc etc) wants this working, and we have it!!!
Second Point: This is an ALPHA RELEASE that basically means it only works sometimes, i have sat here installed checked it works, flashed my f'ing phone with the Shadow ROM, so there was nothing there that could possible help this work and installed it again.
Third Point: Yes the idea is that you use your finger for everything, but as the second point states this is an ALPHA, later releases will have this im surebut for now i appologise for not sorting that but im tired, y dont you try and get it working with your finger? (that wasnt ment to sound perverse but it does!!!)
i keep getting the black screen no graphics? please help ?

I m running on LSVW rom

the cube works perfectly with this rom... i got no slow downs, no need to delete files or anything like that, all you need to do is map a key to touch flo

i think the thing you will find with this is the fact that this is deoendant on the ROM used too!! i cannot provide support for this i dont really know the ins and outs of it, i just posted what i did to get it to work!!!
the official link for problems and developing is here:
http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/htc-hermes/10127-touchflo-alpha-testing-discussion.html
if you read this it seems that the functionality of this is very dependant on the ROM

i just got it to work with Black Shadow.. but a few hours ago i installed Shap's rom and i installed touch flo and it worked perfectly, i didn't had to delete any keys or go into /windows folder or any of that stuff with schap's rom
another thing* for those of you having problems, try installing the audiomanager today plug in to see if you get different results, i have noticed that whenever the plugin is not in the today screen the cube seems to not work*
I assume this only works on a Mobile 6 Rom, and not on Mobile 4 (WM2003SE)

[Q] White Status Bar

Do you have to root and/or flash your Evo with a new ROM to get a white status bar? Or is there an app or something that can do that?
Thanks

You are talking about the AOSP bar. To get that you either need to flash a theme or be running Cyanogen. In both cases you must be rooted.
Thanks for your reply rafroehlich2.
Wow. This is not fun. My phone was backordered twice so I got it 2 weeks ago. It came with 2.2 on it and if I'm reading posts right, it seems that it is unrootable...at least for now. I have found all these apps and themes that I want to use but all require a rooted phone.
Ugh. Someones got to help.

With the large amount of talent searching for a root method its only a matter of time. Just keep track of the threads you like so when you get root you'll be able to flash. I wouldn't be surprised if within a month 2.2 is defeated...and that's on the high end.

[Q] Changing framework-res

I'm familiar with changing the icons/files in framework-res on the phones, I assume the process would be the same on the Archos Gen 8s. I understand we don't have a nandroid backup to load if we screw it up but messing with the SDE version of Android somewhat alleviates that fear.
Am I right that it should be the same?
Yes.
Just keep in mind that you need to use a version like UrukDroid that gives you writeAccess to /system, because SDE only doesn't work.
Thanks. I'm using Uruk 0.4.1, so I'm ready to get to work.
This is mostly to fix the stupid Talk notification icon (am I the only one that has two white pixels on top of the talk bubble?) but I know from past experience it will soon progress to sick days, missed family events, and late night arguments with my wife as I desperately attempt to tweak just one more thing to get rid of the urge. . .
Yes its time for some themes...stock looks ugly when compared to my epic 4g

Thanks for the link but don't think this will really help as it is. The script tries to mount the /system folder on the internal nand, which won't work for us (well, not using the UrukDroid root, anyway). Should be able to tweak the script though.
Have tried replacing the framework.apk manually with an edited one, and set the correct permissions (on UrukDroid 0.4.2), but all I get is a black screen after the second Archos splash screen. Have done it the same way I did on my Desire, by editing the contents of framework-res.apk, rather than unpacking and repacking, but I guess there may be a signing issue here. I forget how much of the hard work Clockwork recovery does for you! Also, it may require edited the services.jar, but I'm not sure how to do that, or what needs editing. So far, all I did was try to change icons etc.

[Q] resolution problems

so today i went to sprint and had them clean some dust out from under the front glass after i picked up my phone and turned it on all my icons are super tiny i thought that was strange looked even closer and every thing is small. i take it back to sprint and the guy who worked on my phone said the resolution was very high. he said it was because i was rooted and running a custom rom. well i am rooted but have never flashed a custom rom yet i have been waiting to do so. then he told me he had no idea how to fix it. thanx. so my question is is there a completly stock 2.3.3 rom available
Download LCD Density Changer from the market. The default value is 240. This will fix your issue. Hit the thanks if it works out for you.

Maybe you modified the build.prop in the system directory by accidentally changing the wrong value. Also, the majority of the folks here are willing to help. Glad to hear that it worked out dude.

[Q] Refurbished w/ ICS dilemma help needed.

My girlfriend just bought a refurbished A100. It arrived with ICS 2 days before the OTA was due. At first I was like GREAT! but upon further investigation I found it had the camera and speaker bugs reported in earlier leaked versions. So I looked at the build number and sure enough its an old build (.002).
Now my dilemma is do I wait for the OTA in a couple of days or do I use the stock ICS (.014) downloaded in the Dev section.
Now my girlfriend has watched me live through the agony and ecstasy of flashing roms and kernels on my Galaxy Tab and Revolution and does not want me to root her Acer.
I have searched the A100 forums and it appears you can flash this w/out root through stock recovery. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I can't seem to find very clear cut directions but here is what I think I need to do someone please tell me if I understand correctly.
1.rename downloaded zip to update.zip
2. put on root of external sd card (anywhere in particular)
3. turn tab off
4. turn tab back on by holding power and volume down
5. let go of power button and continue to hold volume down
6. let go of volume down when Android w/ gears icon appears
7. let it do it's thing
8.profit!
I'm a noob to Acer but not Android in general. Please any advice would be appreciated as I REALLY don't want to F-Up my Girlfriends new baby.
I know you feel buddy, my girlfriend inherited my old HTC Desire, which she loves but, doesn't love it when I say "I have a new ROM for you!" She loves having ICS though so go figure!
Yeah you've got it all right, it might take a few times to get into the stock recovery, it drove me mad ha ha, no harm done though just a bit fiddly to get the button combo every time.
the .014 release is the ICS to flash as it has full touch support with games.

Thank you for your quick reply toyface. Just another quick couple of questions.
Does the screen lock button need to be in any particular position when doing the stock recovery flash?
Is there any particular folder or place on the sdcard that I have to put the update.zip?
If I decide to wait on the OTA, will it go right over the old ICS build or will having the old ICS interfere with that?
Thanks again.
The stock rom in the development section is the same as the ota update, so your tab won't find a new update as it will already be installed. As for flashing, your steps are correct, but make sure you hold the volume button closest to the power button and you should be good. Hope this helps!
