[Q] Desire doesnt recognize SD card - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

in settings/sd card&phone storage, i can see SD card
Total space

Mount SD card
Insert an SD card for mounting
Erase SD card
Erases all date on the phone's SD card, such as music and photos
The last two items (Mount SD card and Erase SD card) are grayed out.
Have formatted the card several times to fat32 through computer, where it works, using a memory card reader. But for example, the music widget doesnt say "please insert sd card", instead "no music found...." and when i go to the application then it says insert sd card, but not the widget. Also LeeDROID POST screen when vbooting states: "Detecting phone storage:microSD"
Has any1 had similar problem? Is there something i can try or is the card irreversably corrupted?

Try to use recovery from my signature, and repartition it. (using recovery)

can´t flash it. only oneclick method would be possible, but your intructions there are confusing start runme.cmd what does that mean?

It's in the .zip file, double click it...

when i click on the .img file, powerarchiver opens. and the recovery is still the same

http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=661320&stc=1&d=1311252283
Download and extract on your pc to flash while your phone is fully booted (not in recovery).
usb debugging must be on (settings/applications/development)
unzip the file
If you are on Windows: start runme.cmd // Unixfreaks start runme.sh
finished

adb server is out of date, it says. then goes into a loop
seems like i downloaded something else earlier.

It doesnt find some data/local/tmp/flash_image etc files. Plus it always complaints that adb server is out of date

I'm out of ideas sorry.

Make sure you installed android sdk correctly:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Install_the_Android_SDK
Then turn off your phone and start it with pressed back button.
Open cmd and navigate to your android sdk folder.
Connect your phone to your computer.
In cmd enter:
Code:
fastboot devices
to make sort fastboot recognizes your phone.
If so, enter
Code:
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0
Now your sd card should be recognized again.
Swyped from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App

Have tried it several times. fastboot devices shows my device, but the command afterwardsgives me an bootloader command error

Amphor, why did you start a new thread on this same issue? I've given you 3 fixes for your problem...

The problem turned out to be something different from why started the first thread? Didn't it?

Does your PC see your card??
How did you fix your 1st problem btw?
Because i see your still getting bootloader errors ... the same errors you were getting in your last thread!?

The errors are the same but the problem is slighlty more accurate, i feel.
Computer recognizes the card both through card reader and through recovery "Mount USB storage"
Something problem with Android, because i tried it into an old LG with LG's own operating system and there i could view the contents of the card, for example. I had nothing on the card at that time so i couldn't test music playing, for example
Formatted i n FAT32 and i believe it's the only option

It's not, i was just saying that the card is formatted in FAT32 and said that it's the only file system possible, i think

I told you to do that in the last thread its always good to start fresh if you can when you have problems ... At least you learnt something .. so is everything fixed?

What SD Card are you using?
size? class?
I had the same problem once.

[Q] "SD Card mounted as read-only"?

Hi,
I'm posting this issue second time. I have a class 2 SD card with almost 1700mb of ext3 partition. the problem is that my SD turns to read only when accessing some files from my sd card. it says in the notification SD card mounted as a read only and then say "tap" to resolve the card responded unexpectedly.
tapping on it sometimes help if i remove the files that I was trying to access that created the problem. otherwise it mounts it as read only.
Hi, you sure your card is a genuine one? The problems you are having are identical to what I had. Turns out my 32gb card was in fact an 8gb card, and the problem was when capacity was reached it would go to read only. The only way to rectify this was to take the card out, place it in my PC card reader right click on properties of the drive and run the error checking tool. Hope this helps. Got my money back anyway thought £36 was a bit cheap lol! Try writing a large file to the card using your Computer, this should give you an indication if the card is genuine or not.

Card is genuine. I have placed my card several times in my brothers htc hd and formatted it through windows. its almost 8 gb i checked it on windows. last time I deleted a folder which has wiered name as if the folder was corrupted. I deleted that folder n it was running fine again. but its back again.
mine came with telus, so it should be genuine. what does class signify? like i have class 2, what does it mean?
CLass is the speed of read and writes.
I recently had a problen like this it turned out to be a corrupt file in the .secure folder used for apps to sd.

then I guess its because of corrupt files but why is it so often specially when I copy something from windows.
I had this problem once after disconnecting from a Windows PC, simply connect the sd car directly to a computer and run the windows verification tool, it finds the corrupt file and your sd card starts working again
hey i recently had the same problem ,, but i figured it out and this method should work fine...!!
>First of all you should know how this problem has occurred..??,
well the reason is, we all connect the phone to system in usb mass storage mode ,,but while removing we'll only give safely remove in the system and forget to do the same in the phone ,,,trust me this the core for this problem....sd-card cannot be fully unmounted by system ,,, so you have to manually do this by your phone
so if you are using the sense rom ,,after ejecting the disk in the system ,,,in your your phone's notification area
in ''connect to pc'' menu select charging only .....this will completely unmount your memory card .
>if you are using non sense rom ,,"turn off the usb" mass storage
do this every time you connect your phone to the system ..!!!
ok now solution for your problem..
>reboot your phone to recovery mode using rom manager...
>select partition menu
>now select mount usb storage ,,,
>now you have tow options
1. either you backup every thing and format your sd-card (recommended)
or
2.mount your sd-card and check for errors in windows,,,
this should fix your problem ..
remember ,,next time when you are connecting your phone don't direly unplug the the cable..!!

The Class number represents a multiple of 1 MB/s
So if 2 is written on ur SD card then it means that its capable of a read speed of 3MB/s

If you have a mac the fix is - disk utilities - repair card
Full format I found to be better though

[Q] Dropped my phone - Now stuck in bootscreen

Hello guys,
I woke up too early this morning, and i accidentally knocked my phone off the stairs. It fell about 2 meters, bounced and then fell another meter, bounced and fell another meter and stopped.
Thankfully it was in a silicon case (i think that's what made it bounce) and there are no visible damages.
I picked it up, and it seemed to be working. After a few secs it went into sleep mode and would not wake up.
I removed the battery and rebooted, and i got the HTC screen, then the nexus boot screen and it stays stuck on the nexus boot.
I then entered recovery mode and thought i would try and restore my backup. I get the following message:
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(No such file or directory)
E: Can't mount /sdcard
I took off the SD card, put it my pc and it works just fine.
I got another SD card, copied a rom onto it and tried to reinstall through recovery.
I did a wipe/data factory reset and tried to install the rom.
I got the same message...
Is my Desire toast? It's only six months old...
I was running Defrost6.1 and using psfMod 0.9.7.2 as my recovery.
Any advice would be extremely appreciated.
Thanks
aalex
UPDATE
I did another wipe data / factory reset, and i rebooted.
The rom starts up, without any of my previous settings of course, but I still cannot mount my SD card.
From file manager, it seems that it is being mounted, but no files are listed...
When i try with gallery it reports "SD card unmounted or not present".
Any insights?
Drop it again, it helps

Wait till the battery dies. Then insert the SD card and try again to boot it (with usb cable connected to have some battery power) again.

With your SD card in your phone go into settings then storage and unmount SD card. Then format your SD card from your phones menu and it should mount the SD card see if that worked.

Hi ste1164,
Thanks for responding. My problem is that my phone cannot pickup the existence of an SD card.
This is a typical USB-brick. I've had one a few weeks ago. You should look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639&highlight=usb+brick.
If you're new to this, it can be hard to get it working again. Just let me know if you have any problems. It took me a few hours to get it done
From fastboot via ADB, execute "fastboot oem enableqxdm 0" and then reboot it with "fastboot reboot" command.
See if it works.
If you don't remember how to do the above, just search.

its not a usb brick, thats a software brick.... it sounds to me like you have a corrupt sd card, sd cards are very delecate and this can happen from a sudden impact, try formatting the card in windows explorer, obviously you cannot format your sd-ext using windows so try gparted or ubuntu to format your other partition.

Can't be sdcard, op said tried sdcard in PC and tried different sdcard...same result, must be sdcard reader or something.
You never know, might be a USB brick, just happened before the drop and was brought on by the reset...but I agree probably is hardware fault.
Is it possible to flash stock rom from fastboot without sdcard? Could try warranty repair then...

sorry i didnt notice that, could be a usb brick but like i said thats S/W related and i doubt dropping your phone could cause such an error, +1 suppose the sudden reset could cause the usb brick especially if the device was reading or writing to the sd card when it happened, could also be the sd card reader in the device has been damaged or one of the internal components. can the device read the sim card? if it dosent, could be a usb brick
Just a thought...is the sdcard reader attached by a ribbon? (never seen the inside of my desire, hope I never have to)
I'm sure I've heard of a few desires that can't read sdcard anymore, I reckon it's either attached by ribbon or it's the most delicate part of the phone.
I'm hoping it's a loose ribbon because that's an easy fix, even I could do that.
Hey guys,
Thanks to all of you for responding.
My sim card works just fine. I can make and receive calls, texts, go online via 3g and Wifi, connect through bluetooth. As far as i can tell, my phone does everythind it did before except mount an SD card. Also, the android market keeps crashing, and if i try and download anything from the net i get a prompt saying that i need an sd card to download.
So far I took the SD card and put it in my pc. I formated it, tried again but it didnt work.
I then tried a brand new sd card and that didn't work either.
However, I did not format the old card's ext2 partition, and the new sd doesn't have an ext partition yet.
Would this point to a USB Brick as mentioned above?
Would it be possible for me to flash the stock rom on the device?
Thanks once again, to all of you.

Yes, that should solve your problem. I had the same problem a few weeks ago, but that included a malfunctioning usb, even charging didn't work correctly.
To fix the sd-card, you should run the above command using the tool fastboot, available in the Android sdk. After downloading, cd to the tools folder in the sdk and then run the command while your phone is connected to your pc in fastboot mode. Then it should work again.

Hey koenvbeek,
Thanks for the help. I think i may need a bit more of it
Here is what i did so far:
I used Nephrons guide to download and install ADB.
I then rebooted to bootloader. The phone displays "fastboot" and then when i plug it in it dispalys fastboot-usb
I then went to the ADB tools directory and tried to run the command.
I got a message saying the command cannot be run because adbwinapi.dll is missing from my system, and asking me to reinstall everything...
Clearly i made a mistake somewhere but where?
I don't think you made a mistake
Either the requested file is missing, or it can't be used by your computer. First check if the file is present. If not, google for it.
If it is present, your computer can't use it for some reason. Are you on a 64-bit OS? If you're on Vista/7: did you open the cmd promt as admin?
Yeah, nothing wrong, it's just that the API library is missing.
Download it from the attachment here, and put it in the "tools" folder, then try again.
Edit: As you can see it's in an archive, since dll attachment is not enabled here, so extract the file from it.

[Q] Epic 4g Microsdhc issue and One Click Root & Recovery v2.5.5

Hi,
Please forgive me if this is a noob question. I recently developed an issue transferring files to the sd card. Using the usb storage method, after transfering 2 or 3 mp3s, the phone would shut off and reboot for no reason (This caused the Zeam launcher to crash apparently? for at least 15 tries)
I tried using the SD adapter, the transfer rate is extremely slow or to no transfer at all and causes windows explorer to crash or hang (tried at least 15x).
I figured my sd card was corrupted so I tried formatting the card. If I used the SD adapter, it would say the card is write-protected even though clearly, the locked was off. I even tried another SD-adapter to no avail.
Finally, using USB storage, I was able to format the SD card.
Since I mentioned earlier that the Zeam launcher crashed, (yes, I selected always use "zeam launcher" even after it crashed causing the error message to loop) I resetted the phone with the wipe data/factory rest option in clockworkmod (I'm using ViperRom 3.03).
I wasn't sure if the 1 click root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388) installed any folders into the sd card so I ran the 1 click root in windows just to make sure. After rebooting from the 1 click root, all the files that were previously formatted were back.
I guess I didn't read too clearly but
my questions is
1) how am I able to disable that backup function? I had a bunch of files (which I have no idea what they did) from when i first started playing with the phone and I want to start off fresh with just the files I need.
2) anyone have any idea why the sd card was unable to accept files through the SD adapter or USB storage method?
3) what to do when the launcher crashes (this happened to me 2x already where I lost all my data)
Thanks to anyone who can help. This will help me close some gaps in my limited Android/Epic 4g knowledge.
definitely something is weird. Using usb storage, I ran the scandisk to fix errors and some errors were found. I formatted to ntfs just for kicks and the sd card read blank and in properties the drive had nothing in use. I turned off usb storage, turned it back on and voila, all the files that weren't there are now back. It this a sign of a corrupted sd card or am I going crazy?
Which files/folders are you referring to? Because as soon as your phone mounts your sd card, it will write about 4 folders (I think) if they are not already there...
.android_secure
Android
DCIM
LOST.DIR
if I recall correctly. The other thing you can do is use your phone to format your card instead of doing it on a computer... go to 'Settings->SD card and phone storage->Unmount SD card' then after it is unmounted, use the 'Format SD card' option. If this doesn't work, then you may need a new sd card/phone.

[Q] Is it Bricked? SD card unavailable.

Ok so I was running T-Mod_LeeDrOiD_2.3d_A2SD rom. And yestarday while playing Robo Defense phone just froze, screen stayd on etc. I waited few minutes and after that took out the battery. After the restart everything is fine except for the SD card being unavailable. So all my aps don't start (as that's where they install by defult). I spend few hours googling about and it look like SD brick.
I've tried standard ROM using fastboot. No luck
Trying unrEVOked without any luck.
Is there anything else I can do?
Thanks
EDIT: Tested card in PC and other phone is fine. As well tried 2 other cards, none of them is working.
Its probably your sd card that went crazy.
Simply take it out and reformat it in windows, fat32 if you're wondering.
And do the usual, partition using either ROM manager/gparted for your ext.
Though you most probably wont be able to recover whatever you had on your sd card. If you're lucky, your computer might read it.
Not too sure what caused this to happen.
Yeah, do what friedkimchi said.
Try to mount it on your PC and if it reads it, then you're good.
However back up your stuff from there and reformat it again. It happened to me once with the samsung omnia, and I was told it was a sign of a dying SD card and they were right. But that's just my case, maybe in yours some internal program code caused the mess up.

Great advice. The good news is that if your device started and works OK (minus the apps stored on your sd card) then nothing too bad has occurred. If reformat doesn't work, buy a new card - in fact probably best to buy a new card anyway as once they get a bit wonky they tend to stay that way.
O sorry i forgot to mention it. Card is fine, as well I've tested 2 other cards they all work in PC or other phone but none of them works in desire.
Just thinking is it possible that the card slot just died?

Could be the problem is with the ext partition on the sd card that you can't see in windows.
That's where A2SD loads the apps - probably including the game you were playing when the thing went belly-up.
If you have access to a spare card then I'd suggest you format it with an ext partition (using rom manager or similar) then reflash the LeeDroid ROM you've been using.
Problem is I can't format any card in the phone. Even in recovery mode I can't use any card
It happened to me once. It's no big deal.
Just boot your phone to fastboot mode (turn it off, and turn it on while holding back button), connect it to PC, and run this command from Android SDK tools folder:

you can format your card using other tools - maybe take a look at this and see if it helps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=534714
No go either
Getting permission denied error on first command
Also had some trouble when I just got my Desire, after a week using it suddenly it told me the SD was damaged, so I pulled it out like I did on my Wildfire, and put it back in, no joy.
Then found out the slot has a 'click-in-lock' so push it in till it clicks. Lock doesn't work, you can just pull it out after the click, but it fixed my troubles and I could keep using my SD.

Can you try if your memory card is readable by your recovery, like clockworkmod? If yes probably take a nand backup (alternatively take backup of data in computer), reformat & try.

[Q] unable to mount sdcard or even format it

Had evervolv on htc desire, but recently I got system process error, finally managed to boot into recovery, but can not fix or even format it.
it mentioned usb brick, but tried to 'usb unbrick' and got message "unable to determine your CID, please report to ext4'
please help
used the instruction #13 from 1st thread and got this message:
"The system can not find the path specified"
64 bit system
error mounting Sd card
This is very strange and have tried but do not quite understand adk tools
The first issues is that the SD card wont mount:
Sometimes in recovery i can access the card and other times I cant;
I have tried to format it in windows, but doesnt allow me to.
I have tried using the tools on recovery to fix it, but hasnt fixed it.
The second issue is that when I try to reboot it says usb brick and fix it before i can reboot,
but this has not fixed the card.
can somebody please help me with this issue as I do not want to purchase another card.
Can you at least read your sd card, preferably in a card reader to remove any phone element? If so back up the whole card to PC
Then I suggest a complete reformat of the sdcard using gparted live cd: a single FAT32 (on the left) and then maximum 2GB ext4 partition. Again do this in a card reader to remove any phone or driver issues.
Copy contents back to sdcard afterwards.
If none of this works then you may simply have a bad corrupted sdcard. Although it's not a great solution to buy a new one, make sure you stick to a reputable brand, even those are not that expensive nowadays.
No .. I have tried several times, but pc can not read it.
I do have the contents copied though.

The card is Sandisk.
I can sometimes access the card on the pc using the usb, but not all the time
Well at least you have the data backed up, so nothing to lose except an sdcard.
- Are you using a card reader?
- Have you tried gparted and a card reader? This has the best chance of working.
If you can't read or see the card by any means, then not much else to suggest but a new card.
Can see it sometimes using usb connected to phone.
will try your suggestion shortly and let you know
phone say safe to remove sd card.
