Cant get odin to work for me - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just recently running eg22 gingerbread leak, everything is working perfect but now I want to update my modem currently on (eco5). Everytime I go into download mode it doesn't read in odin for some reason?..does anybody have a ideal or possible solution because I really want to upgrade it!

Try another usb cable. Try re installing drivers

Odin mostly only works in the same usb port you installed the drivers on. Try each port, uninstall/reinstall the drivers and reboot, get a better cable. Also search. There is already about a hundred threads exactly like this.

Been having issues with my laptop, running Win7. This is the laptop I have loaded every ROM since I started tweaking my device.
Lately I have had to uninstall my device from the device manager, go into download mode and plug in the USB, then do a scan for new hardware in device manager. Odin will then recognize the phone and I can run.

Yes I understand that but everyone has different ways on how theirs wa reslove every bit on if helps. Mind works fine when phone on,in download mode it says device malfunction and tryed with 3 different cables(shrug) :/

Make sure you do a proper shut down, I have NEVER had issues with odin til eg22. I practically shat myself trying multiple computers that I know worked but to no avail. All my computers said device malfunctioned. I reinstalled drivers but nothing worked.
The problem was I had pulled the battery while in clockworkmod and went into download mode. I reproduced this later it does not recognize if you pull battery from cwm on eg22.
The solution was as easy as going into cwm doing a backup/wipe and install a fresh srf 1.2 and booting it up then proper shutdown and go into download mode and BAM it recognizes. Hope this works

Always is drivers and cables.

I would give the following option (and this is only if your comfortable):
Try installing a VM software, for example virtualbox (http://www.virtualbox.org), install a fresh copy of Windows XP, Vista or 7 (what ever you have a license for) and start fresh from there to:
- Install Epic Drivers (Reboot VM)
- Install phone drivers (connect the usb cable while phone is on and with usb debugging is checked and let it install, then reboot the VM)
- Place the phone in download mode and connect it to the VM, let the drivers install.
Load odin, image files and pit to the VM and proceed to do the download from there, it should work unless something is really wrong with your phone.
Let us know if this helps.

Heimdall is much better for recognizing your device and loads it's own drivers. You need to use 7zip to disassemble the tar files into seperate components and place them in their appropriate spots. I heard the newer version can use the full tar. Haven't checked it out yet. The best thing is you can install another recovery and modem when flashing.

USB Not Recognized after Gingerbread (ACS Bamboozle) Flash

I've tried everything. I've been at it for about 4 hours and i can't figure out why my epic wont mount to my computer anymore. I've reinstalled samsung device drivers, both old and new, i've switched data cables, i've switched USb debugging on/off, i've used different usb ports, i've let it sit overnight without the battery, i've used the dialer code ##8778# to make sure i have it as PDA. None of these work.
I wish i could ODIN back to stock, but without the ability of my pc to recognize my epic, there is not point. ODIN won't recognize it in download mode.
So i'm stuck with ACS bamboozle. not that its a bad rom, but its kinda buggy and i've lost the ability to mount my epic.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks
Why not just flash a new rom through cwm? Then your usb might work on the new one lol..... think cwm before having the smallest thought about odin.......
Have you tried putting you USB on debugging, connecting to computer, try to connect, go into control panel>system>device manager and see what is connecting under USB or Other. It may be Samsung Android....click that and choose update drivers, then pick from Windows Update and leave it alone while it finds all the drivers. Will take a long time. That's how I fixed it on my laptop.

Yup, tried that. It says "Unknown Device" in my device manager. When i try to update it, it says that i have the latest drivers for it already.
The drivers are definitely your issue then. Uninstall the drivers then try the same method. Otherwise download the drivers and reinstall if it won't let you search for updated drivers.

I've downloaded 3 versions of the samsung mobile device drivers. I've uninstalled and reinstalled all of them, individually.
Nothing works.
FLASH A DIFFERENT ROM IN CWM!!!!!!! :/ reason stated in my above post jeez
I did flash a different rom.
I flashed RandomRom's "Egret" and it still didn't recognize it.
I've flashed 5 different roms. All with complete wipes of sd card and factory reset.
I cannot get my phone to mount to my computer, therefor i cannot get to ODIN.

Mass storage still works? If so, uninstall the drivers, put USB debugging on, try to connect to the computer and let it find the drivers all over again. There should be 5 drivers it loads.
mass storage doesn't work either.

I've read through all the forums and they all dont have my problems. I've used all different usb cords, different ports and uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and nothing works... My phone (Epic 4G) wont even go into usb debugging mode at all...

I have a lot of experience with the Epic 4G, all HTC phones and Samsung phones... But none had this problems I need someone with a lot of experience to help me out...

[Q] odin problem

I'm trying to flash a new modem with odin v.1.85. I have all the drivers installed, have restarted computer, pulled battery, new usb cord, and odin won't read my phone. It will read it while my phone is turned on, just not in download mode for some reason. I'm not quite sure what i am doing wrong, I've used odin before but it's been awhile. Any guesses as to what is goin on would be appreciated. After multiple searches I haven't found any answers.
Did you try all the usb ports on the computer? Try it with the battery in and see what happens. Its definitely your computer.

Thanks. tried all but one usb port. i'll give it another go. tried it with battery in and out
*edit* tried all. nothin works. i do have a gadget serial error under the device manager it looks like. any ideas?
can i use mobile odin for this and skip the computer part all together?
Mobile odin doesn't work on our phone yet... so no... give me a second.. what drivers did you install? I'm going to link you the ones I always use... they've always worked. Also if you have any other phone drivers unistall them and install the ones I link. Once you've unistall the others restart the pc and install the new ones.

how do i install kies? where? please give me site..i cant find it on attwireless its being gay..as always.
I was having an issue when I first got mine as well where 1 of the drivers was failing. For me it turned out to be Kies, uninstalled it and I can connect to the computer, install it again and the driver fails and can't connect anymore, rinse and repeat.. did the install and uninstall about 6 times.. everytime it was uninstalled the phone would connect, when installed it would fail again. So no Kies for me, not that its a huge problem, XDA has better roms and I don't need it to sync anything lol
Hope that helps someone, though for your it doesn't sound like you have have Kies installed right now.. so no clue if this will help you or not.

Might seem like common sense but did you reboot the computer after installing the drivers?.
Also turn debugging off and plug it in go to "my computer" and see if you can access the device.
If that fails try ) Dial *#7284# and select "Qualcomm USB Settings" then check "MTP + ADB"

If you are rooted with no custom rom and nothing flashed in CWM other than super user, you do not have a custom kernel. Make sure that Keis itself is not running, just so the USB drivers are there and nothing else.
Have you tried flashing a stock kernel or a new ROM yet? That could be an option to fix the problem.

[Q] Need help ASAP! :c

Hello all, My name is Zach. I've been around XDA for a while, but haven't really posted anything, I thanked devs for work and have been flashing my phone for a while now. Well, last night, I was exhausted, and shouldn't have done what I did. I flashed the full "CODE_SPH-D710.GA10_818252_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5" to my phone via mobile odin from an ics rom (Phantoms ff18 I believe). Everything was going fine until the phone just shut off, and it booted straight into recovery mode.
Well now my phone will not boot, and I have no access to my external memory card via CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.3 that was installed from the tar. All of my roms are on my external.
Every time I plug it into the computer I get "USB device is not recognized" and it installs an "Unknown Device" driver from windows. So I can not mount it in CWM to send the files to internal.
I have tried removing all drivers and kies, restarting, reinstalling, then plugging my phone back in about 1000 times now.
Now some good news, I can get into Odin mode, but odin does not recognize it due to the problem above^
My question is, is there still hope? and can anyone help me?
I would try redownloading drivers on a diffrent computer if possible and make sure you have original cord. You can also try to wipe data via stock recovery and try to boot again just some quick thoughts also could try to find one of the one clicks and pull cord out and put back in once you open the one click (not during the one click) and see if it will show then start the one click also make sure you have the correct drivers install if you go to sextapes site they have everything you need. Hope it turns out ok:beer:

Get a Micro SD USB adapter. You can transfer the files with that.
Well. If your phone still turns on there's hope. After you plug it into your computer and it installs that unknown device or whatever go to control panel -> system -> device manager.
Right click on the unknown device, update driver, browse my computer for drivers, let me pick from list of drivers, then forcefully install the samsung driver through there and then try to odin a stock ICS tar http://rwilco12.androidfilehost.com/LeakSite/?dir=Leaks/Samsung Epic 4G Touch/FI27/Original TAR/.
After the you install the tar I would boot into recovery and wipe data and cache then reboot to make sure it's clean. Then after you're back to stock then you can root recovery whatever and try flashing JB again. I suggest using CWM and a zip file this time around though. Good luck.

So, to recap:
You were on FF18 with custom recovery, went to flash the GA10 tar via MO, phone died during process, isn't recognized when phone is in Odin mode and connected to a pc, you can still get to recovery and download mode on the phone but can't flash because it's not recognized, removed/re installed
Correct?
Have you tried another pc? Have you tried another cable? Have you pulled the sd card out and tried reading that on a pc?

Have you tried another pc? Have you tried another cable? Have you pulled the sd card out and tried reading that on a pc?

Id didn't die, it just turned off, and restarted straight into the recovery. I have tried 3, and 4 different cables, the SD cards reads in the computer but isn't showing up in the recovery, I get "No files found" and since I cant boot, I cant change the directory for the SD card.

Yes, But hopefully my phone is revivable!
Have you tried another pc?
And was it a full flash? You saw pass and it restarted?
:edit: Just saw your post about using both laptops.
What gets me, the flashing process and a restart and still you're left with the custom recovery. I'm interested in where the flash got to.. since the tar doesn't flash a custom recovery..
One thing to try - Put the phone in Odin mode, have it plugged into the laptop, then start odin. Try it backwards..
Which version of Odin are you using?

I've tried a few different versions, but I've been trying to use a one-click that way it will just install everything
