[Q] Custom ringtones mix up, sometimes don't play at all. Why? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Having a really annoying issue with my Xperia Play, running the stock firmware, Verizon plan.
I have a LOT of ringtones (in .wav format, mostly, some MP3's I think) in my ringtone and notification folders on the micro SD card, and I assign a bunch of different ones to family members and friends. The issue is, that sometimes the phone will mix up the ringtones for certain people, and other times won't play a ringtone AT ALL!
I would have an alarm clock ringtone set for the same song for a week and then suddenly it would play an MP3 from my songs folder instead of the ringtone I specifically have in my notifications folder. Um, what?!
I noticed that this usually occurs after unplugging my Xperia Play from my PC's USB port. My mom's ringtone will suddenly be my dad's ringtone, and other ringtones get messed up too. Usually turning the device off and/or taking out the battery solves the issue, but I shouldn't have to do this every time. So, what's the deal here?

Thats cause when you connect to the PC, your SD card gets unmounted so android changes the ringtones as the ones set arnt availible
Convert all your ringtones to .ogg format
and copy them to the coresponding folders in /system/media/
problem solved
you need to be rooted to do that though

I'm not rooted :/ Is that complicated? Any caveats?

Rooting is relatively simple. There are multiple threads with full instructions. Do a search.

Apparently Verizon Xperia Plays aren't rootable yet. Is there seriously any other way to fix this? Why would this bug not be fixed?

I thought our friends here at XDA cracked the bootloader for the verizon version? An unlocked bootloader gives you the ability to root.

did you reboot? tones wont appear till after a reboot

Still the same problem after rooting? That's ridiculous. Can't Sony Ericsson simply release a firmware update to fix the issue?

I'm experiencing other annoyances with my phone: sometimes an app shortcut will disappear from my screen, and trying to put it back there causes it to disappear. Eventually all the icons I attempted to put in that specific empty spot would be found piled into a folder. How silly! And my live wallpaper likes to reset to default when I reboot my phone. Ridiculous.
Is this an Xperia Play problem or an Android problem? I dig the phone but these glitches are really killing my time with it.

Desire forgets Ringtones, Alarm and Text sounds

Hey there
Forst it was a minor annoyance, but this morning the alarm went off without any sound and I was quite lucky, that the vibration was strong enough to get me out of sleep. But this just can't be.
I use custom sounds for all occasions and I got them in with the special folder structure for android to recognize sounds for the apporpriate actions.
But sometimes (no idea, why) it forgets to select any sound at all. In the list, NONE of the sounds - not even the default ones - is selected. Thus the silent alarm. (Except for the call ringtones, which switches to some boring bell.)
I kinda think that it has something to do with some .nomedia files I placed in various folders (like the ones of games...), but this just can't happen.
Any ideas, how to solve this issue? (Yes, since today it's an issue)
Thanks!
Same here. I think it has to do with the sd unmounting itself problem mentioned elsewhere. No real solution yet. Sux.
Sound Issue
I get this issue also. Approx every 24 hours i lose all Sounds for Ringtone, Alarm, Text and Email.
The only way I can get the phone to make a noise is to use the Hardware volume buttons on the side of the phone.
Even if a do a test Alarm or try to change my ringtone - No Sound.
I use all standard default sounds so no custom ringtones etc.
I have tried resetting my phone back to Factory, removing all task Manager Apps, All non essential Apps.
My workaround is to reboot my phone everynight to ensure the Alarm works in the morning.
This started since the 1.21 OTA update. Roll on 2.2..
I have started a thread for this already but no responses so far. Maybe it is not that common.
Lee.
Never had that problem, for me the only issue with alarm is the impossibility to put the sound/music to increase the volume gently...
Just started having this problem myself in the last few days. Not updated anything and still on stock 1.15 rooted.

Phone keeps changing my sounds!

It is not at all uncommon for me to wonder whose phone is going off, as it isn't any of the sounds that I set for my phone, going off, only to find that it is my phone after all, as it has obviously decided it doesn't like my taste in music and pick other sounds, lol. As stated, it has happened many times, is every notification sound and rring tones and is not just a one off. Does this happen to anyone else and/or does any one know what I can do to keep the sounds that I want?

My wifes G2 did this, we found that a downloaded app from the market with different sounds. The phone would play ALL the ringtones at random. Once we removed that app from the phone it then played the selected ring and notification tones.
You don't recall which app it was?

Do u keep changing(adding/removing) music in your SD card?
Does it keep changing it to the same ringtone, notification, etc? Or random ones?
Its normal if the ringtones are you on your SD card, for them to switch back to the default tone set if you hook up your phone via USB to your PC in disk drive mode (phone can no longer access the SD card). It usually switches back to your custom tones when you unhook USB, but occasionally it will stay on the defaults. I've also read of some instances where problems with the SD card will do the same thing.
You can try to move your SD files to your computer, and format the card, or try a different card.
In the case of the SD card issue, it always seems to switch the tones to the same default tone set. If you're getting different random tones, it might be a different issue.

Small issues, quirks and gremlins 7a

Just creating this thread to start a list of small things that I've noticed on the the phone to date.Maybe sometime has answers or similar issues but has found a workaround.
1.Pre Order SD card. Lots of people having issues with this one, send like it needs to be formatted on a pc before it can be recognized?
2. Bluetooth : the phone doesn't seem to like changing broth sources. It won't auto connect to the most recent device and I found that I had to turn it'd my car Bluetooth when connecting to my headphones as the phone kept trying to connect to the car. Bit of a pain. Anyone else have this?
3. Oppo Swype: I had moved to swiftkey on the S3 but seeing as it's pre-installed I gave it another shot. I just found it that if you go to themes you can get a smaller keyboard and move it to your preferred side.nice.
4. Couldn't find the setting to get apps in alphabetical order. TIP: It's located in Settings - Main Screen, then select the icon to the right of where it says Oppo Launcher. Maybe it's just me but this seems like a weird place to have it...?
Separate items for ColorOs 2.0: Recognising that this is still a Beta so my own fault if I'm using it
1. Auto-brightness is a bit touchy, seems to get confused quite a bit.
2. Double-tap to wake hangs from time to time, and has resulted in 2 forced restarts today. Which is annoying
3. Gestures in general are a but more sluggish on 2.0
4. There seems to be a one-handed mode in 2.0 but I've only ever been able to get it to work accidentally and could never repeat the trick.
5. There also should be a multi-window option but I have no clue where it is, so put this one down as it's not too easy to find some of the settings.
Anyone else find anything annoying and get it fixed?

I'm using Swype at the moment so am not sure about the G keyboard. But I have always had the same problem across multiple ROMS. I just came from OmniRom on the S3 and it would often just randomly revert to google keyboard from swiftkey which was my default choice (so basically the reverse of your problem) Not sure it this is a common issue for Android?
ColorOs 2.0
Just wanted to call out that the Oppo recovery and Back up functions work very well. Flashed to ColorO2 2.0 beta and everything worked without a problem. A good sign!
I've experienced the Bluetooth switching pains as well. With my car and headphones both stored it works fine for my car but gives me fits connecting to the headphones where I have to delete my car to make it work reliably.
I've problem too with bluetooth. I can connect to my car (toyota radio BT) but no sound on the car speakers.
The music player starts automatiquely when the phone connect the car radio but no sound.
It's a problem for me because previously I use very often the music player with my Galaxy S3 in my car.
Do you have an idea to corect this issue ?

Have you checked in the settings that Phone and Media audio is set to 'on'? I know that my one had to be changed manually the first time. Also are you on ColorOS 2.0 or the current stable version (can't remember the number), maybe an update will resolve the issue for you?

As for ColorOS 2.0 it is stable and runs smoothly for the most part but there are one or two issue that I just added to the original post. Having said that the bluetooth connections are now working better than before. Not sure if that is related to 2.0 though!
Ok, thank you for your help

One thing that annoys me is when I'm scrolling up to read past text messages and it hits the point where it has to "load" the next bunch it goes all the way back to the last one sent in that conversation. I then have to scroll all the way back up again. Not a super huge problem but annoying when it happens. Does this with a couple other things I think but I can't recall what. I know scrolling through my music library would kill the SD card that came with the phone, that's annoying but SD issues have been discussed already.

The 32 gig SD card continues to randomly disappear/unmount from the phone. I have the exact model but in it is a 16gb instead and it works fine without any problems. What are my option on getting the supplied 32 GB replaced/exchanged?
Response
Hello,
Thank you for contacting OppoStyle.com customer support.
I'm sorry to hear about the issue you're experiencing with your microSD card.
Could you please try format the SD card on your PC or laptop by using an SD card reader?
You could also follow this simple troubleshoot procedure and advise the result:
1. Insert the SD card into the card slot.
2. Turn on the phone.
3. Go to settings - > storage. The phone should recognize the volume of the card.
4. Select "erase USB storage"; if this is not possible, please take a screenshot (Press "Power Button" + "Volume down" at the same time).
5. If step 4 is successful, please try to copy larger files to the card and see if it's readable. If it doesn't, please take a screenshot once again.
5. Go into Camera app. Navigate to settings -> Storage and change the storage to SD card, then try to create a Full HD video (around 3 minutes long), then try to play it on your phone to see if it's working properly.
Please let us know if this steps works for you or if this doesn't, please attach all the mentioned screenshots for us to have a look.
Looking forward for your response, have a great day.

Support,
I've formatted the card multiple times in both fat32 and NTFS in different allocation sizes as well. I've already already formatted it via the phone as well. I can do all of the things mentioned in your trouble shooting no problem. The problem arises when I try to do multiple things concerning the SD card. For example I can not listen to music stored on the card and take a picture that is saved onto the card, when I do the card "disappears"/unmounts from the phone. I can play music, but if I scroll through my music library while listening to music the card disappears. If I'm taking a picture or listening to music and Titanium backup begins to run backing up my apps, the card disappears. Anytime the card is accessed twice it fails. I know it's the card because my 16 gig I can do all of these things without problem with it. I've tried my 16gig card formatted to fa32 and NTFS and it works on either file structure just fine. It also takes multiple restarts at times for the card to show back up in the phone.

It's okay, changing the settings in MaxxAudio makes the difference
It works !!!! Finally, I installed another music player (PlayerPro) and now I have sound on the car's speakers !! So I think there is a problem with the native music player.
Well oppostyle is sending me another SD card. Hopefully it's still the Sandisk Ultra 32gb and not the slow one they have listed on their site. Either way it'll be nice to have the extra space that actually works correctly. I'm surprised by the fairly quick response and turn around time.
Side note
Looks like AT&T didn't like me telling them their low level tech support sucks in the short survey they sent me after doing a support chat via their website. Got a call yesterday from a private number, which I never pick up, so they left a voice mail saying they wanted to do a follow up. Probably nothing will come of it unless they want to magically add the Find 7a to their database or activate my sim for another phone on their network that does LTE. I guess I'll find out when they call back later today. This doesn't work I'll see if I can convince one of the store people to let me activate my sim card on a display model.

How to set message alert sound to user mp3 file

Hi - I've got an inexpensive Android One phone in which I can easily set the message alert sound to one of my mp3 sound files. I would like to do the same thing to my much more expensive Pixel 3a XL, and I cannot figure out how to do this. The Pixel 3a XL has many already installed notification sounds, but nowhere can I find where I can set my own alert sound. Surely this phone can do what my inexpensive Android One can. Can someone please help.
Thanks in advance.
Go into the app and open it's options, notifications, sounds. In the resulting menu select my sounds and your local notification tones will be there. You need to of course have the notification sound on the phone and you must grant the app permission to access storage so that it can use it.
Could Still Use Some Help
Hi krabman
First of all, thank you for trying to help me with my problem concerning assigning a custom music file to my message notification. It is appreciated.
However, either I am missing something (quite possible) or we have different OS software. When I open the messaging app, go to settings, notifications and sounds, I am faced with six different menu selections, each containing about a dozen different notification sounds. These menus are labeled: My Sounds, Pixel Sounds, Classical harmonies, Minimal Melodies, Reality Bytes and Retro Riffs.
But nowhere can I find any place in which I can assign my own music file. So if you (or anyone else) has any ideas, I would appreciate them. I know that this is not really a big deal, but for some reason it is to me and will affect whether I buy one another one of these phones. Thanks Again.

My Sounds will display files in a few different folders, like Notifications and Ringtones, you should place your sounds there. If you want something from somewhere else, try using an alternative file manager like Solid Explorer and it will be an option when you try select a sound... It will allow to see files in most of the phone, like Downloads and Music.
Create a folder called 'audio' in the root of your SD card (internal only in the case of this phone)
Within that folder create three subfolders: ringtones, notifications, alarms
Place your files in the appropriate folders, and they should show up. Notification sounds will show under "My Sounds" in this case.
My media should find any media that isn't behind a .nomedia flag. However the fellow above is correct in that it is much easier to back up and restore if you use the ringtones, notifications, and alarms folders which are already on the root of your drive to store your tones.
You do not have a different OS or software, make sure you have the media downloaded, store it as described, select it as described, make sure your specific app has storage permissions, and it will work. Not might, will.
Edit, if you're trying to use a full song as a ringtone those may be getting filtered out depending on your settings, cant help you with fixing that; not because I don't know how but because it's incredibly irritating when people somehow think that everyone wants to listen to their entire 3 minute ringtone because they're so awesome.
Finally; Success!
I put the mp3 file I wanted to be used for messaging notification into the internal memory\notifications folder and it then appeared in the messaging\setting\notifications\My Sounds listings. I then enabled the radio button and pressed (the incredibly small) Save button. I thought that I was home free, but when tested it still used the default messaging notification sound. I then went to the OS\Settings\Sounds\Notifications\Advanced and saw that despite having changed the messaging sound from the app, it still listed the default one. Once I changed it there, Bingo! It works. So what I’ve learn:
1) That custom sounds on a Pixel are chosen from the My Sounds menu.
2) The in order to get your sound there it must be in the proper folder, such as internal memory\notifications or internal memory\ringtones.
3) That simply setting this custom sound on the actual application may not be enough, that it also may need to be set at the OS level.
I am a long time Windows phone user (and sad this is coming to an end) so this is my first Android phone. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped me fix this problem. I could not have done it without your help.
Thanks again.

BTW, if you install Solid Explorer, or any other app that can register as a file selection app (most file managers can) you can select it as an option to pick the tone, then browse to any file on the phone and it will apply and work (just tested it with a random MP3 in a random folder with the .nomedia tag). So the limitation here is the built in Sounds picker app.

Question Uploaded Sounds & Music Disappearing (Alarms, Notifications, Music, Ringtones)

I've had this the unlocked P6P for over a month. All my uploaded sounds and music disappeared about 10 days after upload.
I use a collection of sounds for alarms, notifications, and ringtones for my prior Pixels (2XL, 3XL, and 5). I also upload my MP3s onto the phone. I place them under folders in "Internal Storage" on the P6P: Alarms, Music, Notifications, Ringtones.
All of the uploads disappear after about 10 days.
I have to transfer everything back on to the phone and set all my sound settings and reconstitute my play list Every. Single. Time.
My prior Pixels never did anything like this. The Pixel 5 was on Android 12 before I traded it in and did not exhibit this behavior.
FYI: I set up the phone as "fresh" upon receipt, where I did not transfer my old phone to the new.
Any ideas of what's causing this?
I haven't had this issue in the nearly two months I've had the phone. With the exception of the time I truly accidentally wiped my phone several weeks back, all the 400 GB of FLAC music, plus my custom ringtones I've dragged with me from phone to phone since my old flip-phone. I've only utilized the Music and Ringtones folders.
I have three different music apps I access my music files with, depending on exactly how I want to play them.
I have no idea what to suggest as could be the issue. My only thought was ".nomedia" files, but that wouldn't actually get rid of the files, just make them invisible to the Android media scanner, so I expect you've already ruled that out and that the files were truly gone. I hope you figure it out, and that someone else has some ideas to give you.
Edit: Another thought - you don't have any app installed designed to automatically clear space on your phone, I hope.
To be clear, you haven't unlocked the bootloader, disabled verity and verification, and/or rooted, correct? (so we can rule out a root app doing it)
No problems here, either. I use what I am used to for ringtones, notifications, and alarm. I've never had to reinstall them. Sounds like a real pain.
I'm not rooted and all apps are from the App Store (not side loaded).
Originally I thought it was BitDefender antivirus -- it was on the P5, too -- and I uninstalled it.
I'm downloading the sounds etc. from OneDrive: maybe it's a Microsoft issue similar to the Teams emergency call debacle? But it's weird that everything disappears around the 10 day mark.
I'll try and install everything using a computer rather than the cloud.

As far as I know, unless you're using a third-party solution to sync, none of the actual cloud-provider Android apps like Microsoft OneDrive sync with the internal storage - as you know, you have to manually trigger downloads from OneDrive on Android, so I doubt if it's a OneDrive problem, but I'm certainly curious if you'll be able to track the problem down.
I use X-plore File Manager's built-in capability to display several cloud providers as if they're just additional drives available to copy from and to, including Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. I used to have my Ringtones in OneDrive but now I have them in Google Drive.
When I'm copying bulk (long hours-worth of copying files) of music, I copy them from a MicroSD card plugged into a USB-C dongle; otherwise, I copy new stuff straight from my computer.
Please update us about your results or if you have any other news.
Most of my alarms, notifications, and ringtones disappeared again. But my music files are untouched (for now). I transferred the files from my PC.
My sounds worked yesterday.
The last time the sounds disappeared, I manually turned on Do Not Disturb. I also schedule DND at night. This day, I forgot to turn off the manual DND before my scheduled DND. So I temporarily removed my night DND schedule, turned off DND, then turned on my DND schedule. My sounds and music disappeared the next morning.
Today, most of my sounds disappeared (except music) after the scheduled DND. At first I thought it was because was .ogg files, but the phone is deleting .mp3 too.
I am going to remove my DND schedule to see if this is the reason for losing my sounds.

Very strange. I use both scheduled and manual DnD all the time and I still haven't had this issue. Still worth investigating and eliminating or confirming that as a possibility on your end though, since there's no other obvious solution.
I would suggest a factory reset if you run out of ideas, or might be worth waiting until the big mega (late) January update whenever that comes to see if that fixes it.
