[Q] Can a faulty SD Card influence a rom performance ? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, i've found out my sd card might be faulty since i get laggs on all Sense roms or any other that requires an Ext partition to use A2SD or D++. I've been trying and trying to use SGBS roms but i get a laggy performance. Now my question is, how can an sd card influence a rom performance ?
Atm im using the default class 2 (i get similar problems probably a bit better with this card) that came with the phone but the other one was a TEAM 4gb Class6.

Mate I think the class 2 is why you are getting lag, you're meant to use at least a class 6 from a reputable brand
Sent from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App

What brand do you recommend for the desire ? i want at least a class 6

My class 2 works smoothly.

Type of partition alignment and formating of a card greatly influences the speed of data2sd/a2sd roms.. You can see a discussion and possible solution discussed In the supernova thread recently

hi ..... the video on the desire hd is really clear but when i try to view the video its just starts freezing and lagging...i read somewhere that this gets fixed when i restart the phone and take the video immediately but I was hoping that there would be something a bit more substantial..maybe a fix of some sorts...would appreciate any help ..... thanks
i have the same problem i found a good high speed card fixed it
i now have a team micro 32gb class 6
I found that reformatting the card in 32k blocks helped too

Aye it is recomended to format with a 32k allocation unit size, and use a fast Micro SD card (Class 4 or above, I use a class 6), I have both of these and I have no problem with 720p recording on my DHD.

It wouldn't harm you to do so, I got a nice Samsung Plus 8Gb for £12 from Amazon.co.uk, I just use it for storing TV series and films to watch on the go so it's an ideal size for me.
Think I'll get 1 soon, 8 gb is plenty aswell for me. Think they are around £12 for class 6 8gb

I have bought 16 gb class 4 and I'm still having the problem...
Can somebody help?
I don't think the card is the cause of the problem. My friend has a 16gb class 10 card with stock rom (1.32) and has the same issue.
After reading a few posts on the forum I found out that this lag/freeze doesn't appear in custom roms ....so I guess the only solution is to wait for the official release of gingerbread (hopefully it will fix it) or to flash a custom rom.
P.S. I too am on the stock rom and having this problem . Just record in lower resolution (at least temporary ).
I have the same problem and I did not flashed my desire, I still have the original rom. Too bad cos the video is amaizing!
hi guys .. i sorted it out.. will tell you what. the card is not a problem. its the version of your android 1.32 lags with 720p. Just upgrade to 1.72 and the problem is gone .. hope this helps you. Btw 1.72 and 1.86 upgrades are available if you dont wanna install a custom rom

[Q] Sd card for Htc Desire

I'm going to buy a new SD-card for my HTC Desire, I've read a lot about this and one thing i get stuck on is if you really need a higher class than 2?
I mean, the Desire HD would be good with a class 4 or class 6 since it can record in HD... But the regular Desire as you know can't
So basically I'm wondering if you can give me a reason to buy a higher classed sd card than class 2.

You will get sufficiently more speed, when copying files from\to SD, if you wish to do ap2sd or data2sd, it's quite important to have fast SD, since it costs not much more, why choose old slow card?
One more - if you'll have to buy Desire HD tomorrow, you won't have to by another one SD
Class 2 SD cards arn't that bad. I bought one and not had any problems with it at all. to be honest, probably just as good as a class 4 maybe. I did a few benchmarks with it and managed to get 9MB/s write and about 12MB/s read and a fair few people have said that is what they get with class4's/6's. People do tend to say that class 10's are useless so you may as well get a class 4/6. But as Splin-ru said it depends on what your running. If you using A2SD then class 4 minimum, if your using Data2SD then class 6 minimum. Personally, I haven't ran into any issues and I don't use A2SD or Data2SD. Had no problems with 720p recording at all so yeh, what ever you want to get.
Thanks for the replies. I decided to go with "TRANSCEND MICROSDHC CLASS 6 16GB"
Read some threads about this card and it has got quite good results in a few benchmarks. I mean, its not that pricey... As i will use A2SD i think this is the choice for me.
Peace!

[Q] Class 10 MicroSD Issues

Hello, I bought some day ago a Team 16GB class 10 Micro SD card, but my Defy freeze, expecially when I browse it with quickpic.
I see some thread about class 10 cards and someone found that a partial fix is format with 32k or 64k as file allocation unit size, and maybe another fix is set higher voltage with setsvel.
I've tried the format fix, but I gain only speed, now I'll try the second to gain the needed stability.
I read also that it's an Android kernel related issue, so we still need an official fix.
Someone know some other method?
D_L
Edit: Also the voltage tweak have failed... It's frustrating...
There maybe something related to the manufacturer. For example in my country the cheepest MicroSDHC Cards are made by Adata and Serioux (there maybe other chinesse brands but these are present at known big IT stores).
So people bought them, especially Adata ( which should be better than Serioux).
Class 6/10... and they ended up not working.
So my advice is to try with a Knigston/Kingmax/Transcend/ Sandisk( not that cheap) same 16gb and same class, see if you see a difference.
And i think Class 6 is enough... if let's say Class 10 from the manufacturers above it too expensive.
Maybe it helps.
Transcend?? um.. i don't think so, it's just the same.
perviously i had Transced 8 GB class 6,
using my old galaxy android, it's so fine and speed is good.
but after went to Defy, it was horrible.
often to cause hangs!
have to unmount / remount, which often not succeed, and have to pull out battery.
and it's especially happen when taking picture with camera or downloading + listening to mp3.
many good moments missed, can't take picture, because have to pull out the battery,
and that's embarassing, in front of my friend.
they think i have a smartphone but often hangs,
and now i know it is just because highclass sdcard.
i am using class 2 sdcard now, never get hangs.
end of problem.
I had the same problem.
I bought a 16GB class 10 SDHC ab. a month ago and when I'd been using my Defy always been freezed when I opened the Gallery or any else card related application.
I deleted the partition on the card and created a new one without LBA mode and the problem had been solved temporary. After a week it was start to make freezes again.
Actually I'm using a 16GB class 2 one (I bought it for 15 pounds as used). There's no problems any more, and it works as the same speed as the class 10 one (by the SD Tools).
I gave up and went back to a class 6 8GB Samsung, i did start a thread on the official Motorola forum if you want to go let them know about the problems, it might get them to issue a fix if more people start to complain about it. https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/53050?tstart=30
i tot only me..
same here..
wanna sell my DNA 16GB class 10.
phone hang quite easily after change to this
So i want to buy a 8 gb card class 4 or 6 tomorrow... and it must work would CM7 . What to get ? I understand that using Sd booster or CM7 default i should get the same speed acordingly to what i set ?

Hi Deonix.
My SD is a SanDisk 8GB class 4 and working well.
A couple days a go i try to use my other SD 16GB (class 10) and had issues, so i back to the 8GB class 4.
Some users have 16 and 32GB class 2 and 4 and they have no problems.
Thanks... i will choose a class 4 probably Kingmax. Anyone with working Class 6 8gb? what manufacturer?
Question: i will have on my 8 gb card a bunch of apps-30-40... some games including Asphalt 6 < for example>, MotoNav, and music. Out of this i think i will still have 2-3 Gb free . I don't need to transfer data from Card to PC frequently (fast i mean) maybe when it happens i will use the phone as a mass storage.
The question is: Do i need a class 6? I only need to work properly while in the phone and have a decent speed as a Mass storage from time to time.
definetely is not cm7 problem,
i thought it was.. and many people thought it too.
maybe it's froyo kernel seems little bit buggy with hiclass sdcard.
and cm7 using froyo kernel though.
using class 2 sdcard is perfect.
the speed is just the same though.
have been checked with some bencharking tools.
Both me and the missus are using class 6 samsung cards this one to be precise http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Micro-Speed-memory-Class/dp/B002WGIV10/ref=pd_rhf_shvl_44 and it works greatSD tools shows a write speed of around 10MB/s and a read speed of around 21MB/s
actually, i'll buy SD Card Team 16 Gig class 10..
any problem with froyo for class 10 ?
need more advice from u guys

many people confirm there's a problem with that,
even with 6 class sdcard.
i don't know what's going on but it's happening and annoying,
it happens on froyo, and CM7 too (FYI, CM7 Quarx uses froyo kernel).

Thats what we are all saying, class 10 cards seem nothing but a problem regardless of size. This is why i went back to the class 6 samsung and posted a link to it cos i know it works.
Just bought a 8 gb Kingston class 4. Will report speed and any other issues as soon as i install CM7 with it.
Hope it works well. It's an Android Kernel issue from Froyo on the Class 6/10 crashes as i can understand.. nobody's fault ( here on XDA i mean). Still some work.
Also i remain strong on my position.
Choose your manufacturer wisely even if it costs 10-20$/i dunno how much more.
I use kingmax 16gb class10 allways hang,
so bad,
use class 4 or 2 batter

i nearly bought a 16GB Lexmark class 6 card today but i dare not in case it didnt work, this is a crap situation.
Same here - Froyo 2.2.2 and Transend 16GB Class10 - freezes at random basis and random applications. No issues with 8GB Class 4.
I have similar problem, how do I know the class of the card? It is I believe a Kingston, I've had it for ages.
Also if it is relevant to someone, I have a Defy from CEE distribution, with Froyo.

You can check if the class is printed on the card. Usually it is a number inside a letter "C" (like a full circle).

[Q] Whats the best SD card to use with an SD ext partition?

Hi,
Im currently using sebastians rom on my htc desire. Everone says it runs super smooth, but im having huge lags. I thought it was the rom, so i tried cool3ds room, which was said to be smooth aswell. Also with this rom, some huge lags.
Both roms use an sd ext partition to store a part of the rom. It got me thinking, could it be my sd card being too slow? I dont know what kinda sd card i have, since i got no knowledge about sd cards whatsoever.
Could these huge lags be causes by my sd card? If so, what sd card would you guys recommend to buy, for maximum performance?
Thanks in advance!
So we learnt what - that smooth and stable terms should be taken with a grain of salt here.
If you don't don't know what sd card you have, I think it is safe to assume that you have a default Samsung class 2 card, which is too slow for anything. Pull out your card and see what number is inside the small circle written on it.

Nice one.
@OP:
To sum up my experiences and what I read, I can recommend a Class 6 SD card from A-DATA, Kingston, Lexar or SanDisk.

Youre right, I indeed do have a Samsung class 2 SD card. Could this really be causing the lags in the rom?
It's not that Im allways experiencing lags, sometimes the rom is super smooth and other times it's soooo slow. For example, when I click the settings icon, it takes 3-4 second before it actually enters the settings menu, and when I scroll between my homescreens, it freezes for 1-2 seconds.
Could a class 6 SD card be a solution? Is class 6 the best to use? I saw some class 10 sd cards around, arent they faster than class 6?
I have a class 4 Sandisk 32gb and seems to work fine
Why not just go for a class 10 card? I got myself a Lexar 32GB from Amazon and every Runny rom is super smooth
Class 10 SD cards are not always recognized by the Desire. So to be sure, one should use a Class 4 -6 SD card. Especially Class 6 works well for all 'technologies' (even DATA2SD).
Is there a noticeable difference between class 6 and 10 when using e.g a runnymede rom? If so, which microsd class 10 cards are confirmed working on the htc desire?

have you aligned the partitions correctly, fat 32 at first and ext4 at last both primary partition

Ye I did. But notice erklats comment. He says class 2 sd cards are too slow for anything. Since I got a class 2 sd card, big chance this is causing the occasional lags.

I did not notice any lags with my Class 6 SD card (in AOSP roms). Never heard / read about anyone who had speed problem with a good Class 6 SD card when using Sense roms.
So in theory Class 10 SD card should work more than ever without a lag. But in practice Class 10 SD cards cause some lags. Don't know why, maybe their are too fast (ATTENTION: dangerous superficial knowledge).

Because sd card is only one side of the coin. Then you have your memory controller and if that one doesn't cooperate with class 10 card, congrats on money wasted.

I ordered a class 6 A-DATA sd card, just to be safe. Ill let you know if I notice any significant improvements regarding the rom speed.

Allright, I just received my SD card en reinstalled Runneymede by sebastiaan on it. Overall performance seems to have improved. Ill keep you updated about the long term performance and if I experience any huge lags. Thanks for now!

[Q] Help needed regarding SD card...

I bought a new sd card.. samsung 16gb class 6 .. I partitioned it using 4EXT recovery but it was giving me problems with seb's rom and Alex's bliss droid pvteam mod as well.. I tried gparted .. it didn't help too..
Seb's rom works for a while but later it started giving me freezing problems and Alex's bliss droid pvteam mod rom stucked even at the first boot..
Then i exchanged the card with the dealer for sandisk 16gb class 4... its giving me the same problems.. I can't seem to properly partition it i guess..
and weird part is that there is no such issue with my old 8gb sandisk class 2 card... both ROMs run smoothly on that one... I just can't figure out what's wrong..
Please help... I feel like I wasted my savings on a new sd card for nothing...

If you mean by "freezing" the phone takes seconds to respond to opening an app. Yes i had the same with my class4 danelec SDcard. Switched to Verbatim microSDHC 16 GB (Class 10) and now my freezing is gone. Only 1 app is still taking a 2 or 3 seconds to respond, and that is whatsapp.
I mean the total freezing of the phone.. not just any app.. the phone freezes... you just have to pull the battery out nothing else works...

I see two reasons for this:
a) the partitions on your sdcard are wrong (I had the issue when a vital ext4 partition was too small)
b) the sdcard itself?
Some hints:
a)
(make a nandroid backup before you change your sdcard partitions)
recheck your partitions
make them all primary
when you repartition the card, reflash
b)
I've used SanDisk 32GB class 4 for more than 1 year...reliability is excellent and speed is good. I rather spend more money on a good sd card than having the risk that the phone 'hangs' or i lose data from my phone.
