[Q] Downgrade HTC DHD and upgrade it again - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I'm newbie for rooting.. I have HTC DHD which has 2.3 gingerbread and 2.37 build. i read lot of posts to downgrade and root. my question is.. if i downgrade it can i restore it back to previous version (for warranty purpose.. because i just bought it few months before.. still covers it's warranty)...
Thanks in advance...
Ezhil

Yes you can. My dhd is still under warranty and I rooted after having it 4 days. Be sure you make and keep a backup of the stock rom as soon as your rooted. I have a copy on my sd and my laptop.

HI twiztedvvv,
Thanks for your response... Is it possible to take back of stock rom before root the phone. because i read from some posts saying, in order to root my device i need to downgrade it's firmware to lower version.

i apologise. i forgot that you have to downgrade first. without root you cant create a back up. its not vitaly important just a handy thing to have. not to worry. you can just use an RUU to restore your phone to stock should you need to use thr warranty.

Thanks twiztedvvv.. Is it possible to have dual boot in my desire HD?

Yes there is a post with the instruction on how to do it in the dev forum. I can't get you a link right now though so do a search.

Root and Goldencard

Hello!
When I bought my Desire, I asked the seller to root it and to flash it with another rom for me.
Then I read something about a goldcard. Since the original rom was from Orange (French provider) and the previous owner had it unlocked (officially or not I don't know ), will I ever have to use a goldcard? As I don't have a goldcard, what can go wrong?
Thanks!

Goldcard is a tool which is required when you try to flash stock ROM. There are a myriad of reasons why you might need to do that in the future.
Here is the method I used:

If you do not have a goldcard you could be unable to flash an ruu. You need to do this, if you want to set your phone completely back to stock. You need to this, when you want to "delete signs" of root, s-off and installed custom roms. So that when you sent your phone back to your provider/seller, you can assert a warranty claim, although you lost it with rooting (and so on) your phone.
Ohhh shh**tt!!
@stringer7: thanks for the link.
I have a backup of the original ROM. Can't I just reflash it to restore the phone back @stock? Can I still make a goldcard?
Thanks for your help!
As far as i know, you can make a goldcard at any time. It's just important to have one.
You shouldn't need a Goldcard- but it's completely optional and beneficial in some ways
Well I plan to give my Desire to my Mom and buy another phone, I don't want her to experience any rom related bug so I'll turn it back to official rom...
Can I simply reflash the backed up official rom? Will I lose Root and/or S-Off?

Yes you would then lose root and s-off.
You could reflash your backup - but if it's a nandroid backup, that would have been done after you rooted wouldn't it, so you would get rooted official rom.
So best thing is find the ruu for your device and carrier, create goldcard and run the ruu? You will find tutorials on XDA for this!
Ok thank you very much for your answers

Rooting a phone does not take the branding off it, flashing a Rom with no branding does that... For example, my phone provider is virgin mobile, when i rooted it I still had virgins logos and apps on my phone... When i flashed a custom Rom, I didn't

Best way to root HTC DZ?

Hi im somewhat of a newbie and ive been reading many guides on rooting the htc desire z but im wondering which way to root is the best for my phone which is the bell htc desire z running firmware version 1.84. Mainly i see 2 meathods, visionary and gfree. Also what is the chance that i will brick my phone?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
gfree http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
This question gets asked at least once a week if not more.
The consensus is that this is the safest, most consistent, and up-to-date method (gfree, NO visionary)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
Plus you get all the support from #g2root @ freenode IRC
Thanks but have alot of people gotten bricks with this meathod
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Also one quick question. It says i need to downgrade to 1.34. I have 1.84 so what features will i lose when downgrading. And can i upgrade again after root?

no.. unless you're one of the unlucky ones with the bad batch of emmc chips that fails to initialize. that's more a hardware issue than a rooting issue, though, and not something to worry about. you might do well for yourself reading this thread in regards to /cache mounting errors.

the downgrade is only done temporarily for the rooting process. after you've rooted, you can upgrade to a custom rom built from 1.84 (or any other firmware version) and get all of the functionality back and then some. I'm not sure what fixes were addressed between 1.34 and 1.84 as I am a G2 owner, but regardless, once you're s-off, you can use any firmware version you'd like that is supported by the DZ.
Thanks!!!!!!
last quick questions. when im rooted. i want to install the sense 3.0 virtuous fusion rom on my phone. do i need any prerequisite items such as gingerbread rom installed on my phone or not?
Also finally, htc is releasing the gingerbread update for DZ/G2 in the next few days so if i upgrade to gingerbread, will the rooting process still work?

Nope, you can go from any ROM to Virtuous Fusion. Flashing a ROM wipes the old ROM, so it doesn't matter what was there before.

Looking to root friends desire - unrevoked...

Hi, i've been looking around to help my friend with his new desire,
I would like to see if this works, according to my research...
If I ran the phone through unrevoked, would this root the phone?
And in turn, let us install rom manager + clockwork mod?
I don't have much experience around here as I am still looking about rooting my nexus
Hope you can help
Details needed.
Bootloader info, phone info...
Sent from my customized HTC Desire using TTP
I'm gonna have to ask about the bootloader info, but it is currently running stock (latest) which I think is 2.2?
EDIT: How do you get into the bootloader? Is it power+ volume down?
Yes.
TouchPaled from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
If its running 2.2, chances are very high that you can root it with unrevoked. Make sure the hBOOT version is 0.93.xxxx
Sent from my HTC Original Desire using Tapatalk
If its the same as mine, yes unrevoked will do. However, i was having issues with CwM before so now im using amon ra recovery.just a heads up

Ye, thats right, I just found out that it is 0.93
So my plan on my original post will work?
EDIT: Do we need S-off? And how does this affect the phone?

It will work. As long as the drivers required are properly installed. And you don't need s-off unless you are planning to change the boot partitions (eg. Change from Stock hBOOT to CM7r2 hBOOT to get more space for apps)
Sent from my HTC Original Desire using Tapatalk
If your still not 100% sure I don't think you should even try rooting your friends phone. You'll need the htc usb drivers installed on pc, make sure the htc sync apps is not installed.
Use unrevoked to root and install cwm recovery, from there you can install any of the great roms.

Please read the rooting faq in my signature. There's also a guide there which incorporates pre requisite information which (for some unknown reason) is missing from most other guides.
But read the faq too. It's not about blindly following steps. It's about understanding the process and what you are doing.

[Q] Official rom + Desire HD rooted

Hi guys,
I have a question about : Official Rom & Root.
Firstly, I have downgraded my HTC Desire HD with Advanced Ace Hack Kit and rooted my phone with this same software. (ROM 2.3.3 w Sense 2.5)
All is perfect.
But now, i would like to upgrade my phone with this official ROM (2.3.5 w Sense 3.0) :
RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_HTC_WWE_3.12.405.1_Radio_12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M_release_225512_signed.exe
Is it going to run ?
I presume that i will lost my ROOT, S-OFF, and data, but...Could I keep my Sim Card unlocked ?
Thank you very much
Is the ROM rooted?
If you flash the ruu, you will lose root and data. Soff and simunlock wont be touched.

Do you mean this one ? :
DHD_WWE_3.12.405.1_STOCK_rooted_by_nitr00

I've found a way to install this rom directly from the SD card by renaming the ROM : PD98IMG.zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382928
Do you think that could work fine with this method ?
Note : I'm not really interested by a rooted rom, just want to keep my sim unlocked.

Rooted phone = rooted ROM. Flashing an RUU will revert back to stock. Snowpatrol posted it, there is a link to a rooted RUU, completely stock, nothing had been changed at all. Go through DHD Dev section, it's in there somewhere.

[Q] One X root - Advice please

I have received an upgrade from my network - Three UK - htc One X
I rooted my unlocked Evo 3D previously, but reading into One X root, I'm finding conflicting information and no straight forward solutions. I have had 2 software updates already - 4.0.4 now. Sense 4.1
Does it matter that I have these updates and that the phone came from the carrier?
Anyone know the best way to get it rooted, so that I can backup the stock Rom before choosing a custom?
Thanks
Altermatik83
UK
Please explain what you want ? Are on complete stock and want to update or are you on a custom rom and want to update ?
And is there still an update available or did you update it to the latest 4.0.4 sense 4.1 ?
I'm a little confused reading your text !
Update 4.0.4 comes with sense 4.1 this is one update not 2 separate updates !
Please give the proper info so i can help you with this
If you want to root you must unlock via HTC dev first . And second there are devs that has made it easy for you .there's apps in the dev section that will do it all for you here's one i found for you http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604439 and once you install your recovery you would want to make a back up of your stock Rom

Hi
Thanks for the reply. Do you have to go the HTCdev route with this? I don't mind doing it a harder way, just the best way. I'm guessing it doesnt matter that the phone is locked to a carrier.

You can still root it following the rooting instructions, there are even video guides for it. It is something everyone can successfully do
If you use that app that I recommended in the previous post HTC dev is built in the app
