[Q] How to get back to CWM? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

To start, I've done as much research on-line as possible, but haven't found a solution that works. I have an INC from launch date, currently with MIUI 1.7.8.0 & radio 2.15.10.05.06.
Anyway, a while back I decided to try something other than CWM. So I installed RA-inc-1.8.1_getitnowmarketing as my recovery (from ROM Manager). Well, I've grown tired of MIUI, and want to try CM7 (which I've read needs CWM).
So, I've tried numerous times getting back to CWM, without any success. I tried installing CWM through Rom Manager; as a matter of fact, Rom Manager says that my current recovery is ClockworkMod 3.0.0.8. But every time I reboot into recovery, RA comes up.
All I'm looking for is a solution to actually remove RA from my phone and have CWM back, so I can finally install CM7. I hope someone can help guide me to a solution on here.
Thanks in advance!

Flashing CWM through Rom Manager didn't work for me either. You will need to find a CWM zip file (Google it!) & extract the folder & then put it on the root of your sd card. Install the update through bootloader. That worked for me so I hope it helps you.

go to dougpiston.com and look under inc.recoveries and you will find what you need. do not unzip (extract) the file just rename it PB31IMG.zip and put it on teh root of your sdcard and flash it under hboot.

Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!!
Seriously, I cannot thank you enough. I've been trying for over a week now, googling everything I could possibly imagine. I feel stupid for not being able to figure that out myself, but now all is good in the world, and I have CWM again!
Off to a party...and when I get home, I'll be ready to try out CM7!
Thanks, again kzoodroid (especially for the link, too)!

[Q] Need an Update.zip

I have no idea how to troubleshoot my phone. I can only explain what happened. I did the unrevoked unlock and it worked. I started downloading roms and some worked until I ran into one that ruined my phone. My phone now only goes into recovery and the only thing I can flash is an "update.zip" I did try to search and If I didn't do it enough I apologize in advance. I am at my wits end and just need an update.zip that can get the phone at least functioning again please help.
Can you adb push things to your sd card?
You can always run an RUU and start over, I think you can run it from recovery. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
I know you're gonna hate hearing this but this is a great lesson learned on why you should nandroid.

I promise if I get back from this I will nandroid afterwards I'm just a noob and the unrevoked 1 click seemed easy enough. And flashing was a breeze until I flashed something that didn't agree with my evo. How do I run an RUU? I only have the option to flash an "update.zip" file.

Update.zip is a generic term for a rom. Just download any rom (I reccomend Ava froyo v7), rename it update.zip, push it to your sd, and flash it. If you need help on pushing, just ask.

Clockwork 3.x does not flash properly?, want to go back to 2.5.x? Look here!

I'm looking for CW 2.5.0.1(?) so I can flash radio and other files. It seems like 3.x "aborts" install with some files.
I have not been able to find the 2.5.x CW img for the Evo. Also, now that my phone is crippled (flashed a new ROM), how do I install the 2.5.x over the 3.x? ROM Manager does not give me the option to flash back to 2.5.x
Thanks for any quick help!
BTW, I'm not using RA because it doesn't seem to allow me to navigate the SD directory to chose files to flash. If there is something I'm missing, let me know.
Edit:
See post #7 below, it contains the file to get you back to 2.5.0.1!!

I believe that the new clockwork is causing problems for a lot of people, myself included. I cant revert to an old clockwork like 2.5 either. I just had to flash RA 1.8 on my phone and my wife's Evo.

Rom manager has an option at the very bottom called "all clockwork recoveries"... Use that and select whatever build you want.

For some reason that method isn't working for a lot of people, myself included. The thing that is working is to flash RA 1.8
I tried several times to revert to an old clockwork and kept getting an error.
go here... http://www.clockworkmod.com/download/recoveries/
click the supersonic recovery you want... make sure its the .zip file.
put on ur SD card and flash. hope this helps

Correct, the older versions in ROM Manager do not work for the Evo.
I ended up finding a pc36img.zip and flashed it. I am now back to 2.5.0.1. I don't use RA because I can't select files. It's a pain when I have a lot of files to flash.
Here is the Clockwork 2.5.0.1, packaged flashable.
Put it in the root of your SD, boot into bootloader, let it update, and life is good again...
Edit: Some additional info to save you some searching:
Make sure you flash using bootloader and NOT your current recovery. Power off, hold Vol Down, and Power On. Let it update the image, then reboot into recovery again. At that point, you should see 2.5.0.1.
ROM Manager does not properly downgrade. 2.5.1.4/3, I have been told, is not for Evo. You will need to flash manully as I described.

There's a more sinister problem with 3.0.0.1 (which appears to have now been retracted, as ROM Manager, after updating me to 3.0.0.1, is now showing "Latest Recovery: 3.0.0.0" at the time I write this).
It's only sheer chance that I had another unrelated problem, or I would have been screwed -- the Nandroid backup is broken in 3.0.0.1 (it completed the backup operation within about 2-3 seconds, clearly not having backed up everything!)
Edit: I checked in the backup directory, and the only files backed up by 3.0.0.1 were boot.img and recovery.img
Now that I reverted to 3.0.0.0, at least the backup takes a good long time and seems to be listing all the usual stuff, but I don't feel that I can trust 3.0 now.
I'm going back to what was working for me a couple of days ago (2.5.1.2) when I tried CyanogenMod (6.1.1) for the first time. ROM Manager and ClockworkMod Recovery handled it all so perfectly that I kicked it off with checkboxes enabled for the "back it up" and "wipe" options, got called away for about 1/2 hour, and when I returned, there was CM6 in all its beauty, even including the Google apps.
Is there an "official" place to report bugs for ClockworkMod Recovery? I noticed that the clockworkmod.com web site has gone poof (Google cache shows it intact on Dec 11th).

I'm sorry, but as an AR Recovery user, I see no reason to switch to Clockwork other than being able to browse folders other than the root of your memory card for ZIPs. AR seems much more stable and has had all of the features (except that one) that CW recently had added.

When ROM Manager prompted me to update tonight, I got 3.0.0.2. I was able to complete a backup, including the WiMax partition. Going back to the advanced restore menu, I was given the option to backup WiMax and other partitions seperately.

Question for yoru guys: When you flash with RA (/AR), do you just rename the file and put it into the root of SD each time? Is there an easier way to flash with RA that I am not aware of?

Not defending CW, but it does have USB Mode. It's just tucked away in the menu.
If I'm on my PC, I download and then just drag to the phone or I use Dropbox, then Astro to move it to the root. If I'm not, then I use Astro. I don't have to rename anything.
ARG! I flashed 2.5.0.1 and still non of my old backups work they all hang at the white htc boot screen. I am just booting into recovery and running restore should I be doing something first?

How do we update CWM?

I've been doing tons of searching but I can't find an answer, I have still have CWM 2.5xx and I need 3.0.0.7 for most ROMs (I wish I knew that beforehand, I've been flashing roms and having tons of problems, and I'm sure that might be a reason why.)
anyone know how to do this?
Thanks!
Update your Rom Manager in the market and you will have the latest CWM. If you've already done so, go into rom manager and scroll down to "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" and change as needed. Your CWM will be orange now instead of green.

Download an Inc recovery from http://www.dougpiston.com check the MD5 sum with the one provided, rename the file PB31IMG.zip put it on the root of your SD card, boot into HBOOT and follow the onscreen prompts from there. That should do it for you!
EDIT: Or that ^ lol. I forgot about that... Haven't used ROM Manager in a whileeee.

Haha me either, I only use rom manager now to delete my backups. For everything else, there's recovery!
I use Astro for that

Yeah I pretty much had the same issue recently after I rooted with unrevoked and had whatever 2.5.x.x cwm that it put on there, and I wanted 3.0.0.7 so I could try a gingersense rom. After trying the zip method through recovery which I couldn't get working, I ended up just using the Rom Manager app, which brought me to 3.0.0.8 and I downgraded to 3.0.0.7.

pc36img problems

I have been using the very stable pc36img spring lovers version. I flashed a bunch of roms yesterday like I usually do. The last one was the miui rom from yesterday. It didn't work. tried to do a nandroid update but could not. Then I used the pc36img that has worked well for a while but everything updated except the system. it said failure-UZ. luckily later I was able to instal a hybrid rom with MANY bugs. I no longer can upload my contacts. If you have an idea or can point me in the direction of a pc36img that may solve this I would greatly appreciate it. I know I should have moved my backups to the sd card but I messed up here. Please help. Thanks
Honestly you should stop flashing roms as PC36IMG because you'll forget what they are eventually. Download the rom you want, place it on your sd card, then do a full wipe, and flash it in recovery, boot up, and you should be fine.
That is what I do. but after flashing yesterday's miui rom from the zip file my system wouldn't let me do a nandroid backup. In desparation I used my pc36img update and now a I am screwed

The only PC36IMG's you should ever flash, really is recovery and RUU. Everything else you should do in recovery with a flashable zip.

ok this is all i can think of:
1 - get the original pc36img.zip file and put it in your sd
2 - delete the amon ra pc36img.zip that you have
3 - go into bootloader and when asked to update hit yes
4 - when asked to reboot hit yes
5 - if your phone reboots fine (i will give it a pretty good amount of time) download rom manager
6 - in rom manager flash Clock Work Mod (CWM)
7 - Then make a back up (optional).
8 - scroll down in Rom manager and flash alternate recovery (this will give you amon ra w/o having to put the pc36img.zip into your sd card.
9 - do what you wanted to do at first.

You guys are talking about PC36IMG.zip as if its a ROM that is being flashed. Sprint Lovers, if I am not mistaken, is a ROM that should be flashed via recovery like all ROMs should be. You should not be flashing PC36IMG.zip files through Bootloader unless you are updating radios, RUU back to stock, splash screen updates, etc. It sounds like you are spending a lot of time flashing things via bootloader and that is what got you in this mess to begin with. Can you get into recovery? If so then download any ROM, enter recovery, wipe cache/dalvik cache/data, flash ROM, and then quit using the bootloader before you permanently screw up your phone. This problem should be able to be fixed without the use of a PC36IMG.zip file. Because you've gotten flash happy in your bootloader and as of right now you can't tell us exactly what you've flashed.
If you cant get into recovery then just download Amon Ra v2.3, flash it, and then do the steps I mentioned above. It's not difficult. Just stop getting flash happy with your bootloader.
There is a version of Sprint lovers that can be flashed thru bootloader
And for jj that might just mean the pc36img is corrupted you can download a new one but I say just nice on and use recovery instead of bootloader

pc36img probs
hmmm? I have tried everything as described above. maybe my sprint lovers pc36img has been corrupted. but I really don't think so bc I saved it in many different sdcards and in my computer. Should I try another .zip? can anyone point me to other pc36img files that may help. I must say that I do not flash anything by pc36img, but after I flashed hybrid I couldn't do anything. In desperation I tried my sprint lovers pc36img assuming I could go back. I had to many backups saved and it told me that I didn't have enough space when I tried to do a nandroid backup. I guess the take home message is to save nandroid backups to the sd card also. unfortunately mine is lost.

[QS] How do you install a ROM on Evo4G?

Hi Guys, I hope I don't get flamed for asking this but how do you install a custom ROM from this website on Evo4G? I have downlaoded the ROM and also the ROM manager but when I go in the ROM manager and browse to the folder on the SD Card where I have copied the un-zipped version of the ROM files, it never lets me select anything.
Please help.
Without being rude, just Google "how to flash a Rom on evo 4G". There are links to threads here as well as other sites. If youre not the kind of person who's used to researching this stuff first I'd recommend staying away from flashing and XDA.
You don't want to unzip the ROM
Weird as it may seem, the Recovery flashes (installs) files in .zip format, it's just the way everything works on android.
Hey,
Make sure you search before you post, that being said if you need to download the rom and put it on your micro sd card! DO NOT unzip! you need to flash the zipped file!
That being said if you are using rom manager go to install zip from sd card chose the file! make sure you wipe the data cache and dalvik and hit okay and let your phone do its thing from there! during this process leave your phone alone and come back to it after it finished flashing and reset! and at any point of the process NEVER take out your battery!
Good luck and happy flashing!
I hope I helped If I did please hit the thanks button!

SMH are you even rooted? First you need to root your device Google "root evo 4g xda (insert hboot version here)" then Google "Amon RA evo4g xda" then backup your current rom then wipe everything except SD card and batterystats in amon RA wipe menu, go back to main menu to install zip from SD locate your zipped up rom and select then select to install then reboot and profit
