HTC HD7 , whopping 3.5 hours 3G usage on 50% charge today! - Windows Phone 7 General

running Mango RTM:
today i changed my old sim card to a new one
the old one is a iphone 3G sim card ( smaller gold plate)
the new one ( seems bigger gold plate)
and i got this
6PM - 9PM on 50 % charge continousl surfing web on browser on 3G.
THis is something i never had even on nodo...
can someone explain?

anyway found something here which may explain it
http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre-pre-plus/266015-micro-sim-causing-extra-battery-drain.html
seems my old sim which was used on the iphone 3G is trying to identify the HD7 as an iphone?

I'm confused...what are you asking?

How is this possible? Hd7 not supposed to last more than 3hours on full charge

I don't get it either... is this a sarcastic thread?
I don't have an HD7, but the phone I have usually lasts the entire day. Slightly less if I stream youtube for my 45 min commute to work.

I can easily do the test over Mango tomorrow.
I have HD7 with T-Mobile HSDPA.
But during the work i have done over my mango HD7, look like the HD7 has slightly more battery time after the firmware update from HTC, and also the new features / tweak from Mango.
I mean, when i was on Nodo, my Schubert usually died after about 8 hours of Light Surfing in class for research, and a little apps around it.
From 7h in the morning to 2, 2h30PM, and most of the time i could not finish my work before my phone died.
After Mango, i feel there are something really different with Nodo. School works increase by times, i do more searching stuffs on the phone than ever before, like 50% more, 3G like all the time, from IE, to Amazon Kindle, Adobe Reader... and my Schubert even last longer than Nodo Standard about 30-40 mins.
My settings almost are default, Remember Location = On, Push mail = On, Automatic Find Updates = On, Auto Update Social Network = on.
I will go out tomorrow and give a little more detail on Mango battery Juice.

Like Magpir said, it probably had more to do with switching SIM cards. Although Mango probably helped a little.
I saw the same when I switched cards. The guy who switched it out for me told me that the old cards were inefficient in staying locked on to the 3g network. My phone would continually switch between 3g and 2g which drains the battery much quicker.

I can generally get about 3.5 to 4 hours out of my Arrive over 3G and this is with streaming music. it all depends on the signal strength, if it's really strong the phonewont use any extra energy to decode the signals from the towers. if there is a weak signal or a busted tower then the phone will try its best to retain the signal and transfer data which can cause overheating and rapid battery drain. I can share my experience with this as the tower in my hometown's busted so my speeds are slow and my battery doesn't even last 2 hours in this case.

Not surprising really. Battery life on 7720.68 (HD7) improved significantly after using the built-in Connection Setup app. I saw this tip in another thread and can verify it worked on my HD7. Yesterday I went from 5:30am to 11pm on a single charge with exchange pushmail(as items arrive), wifi and bluetooth always on and 3G (Taiwan GSM), 30 minutes gps logging, 30 minutes web browsing, 60 minutes zune and 15 minutes talk time. Battery is stock and already 7-months old. MS & HTC got this one right -- I think WP7 has a very bright future. Cheers

My point is I was heavily using it, for 3 hours straight at 50% charge, surfing web and chatting on msn.
Also discovered that there is a flaw in the charging process, not sure if it's related to mango or the phone battery / hardware.
I noticed that after every full charge, I need to soft reset each time for the battery not to drain.

Anyway I tested the phone in different areas within a 5 km radius

Hmm now I wonder if my SIM card has issues. I always believed that there is something wrong with the 2g to 3g switching.
At first I believed that it is just bad code by MS.
I tested it by traveling through half of the country and the battery died in just half a day.
I have also noticed that the Samsung Network app recognized one of my SIMs as a contract when it should be a pay as you go card. (it was originally a contract card)
Might head down to vodafone to get myself a new one.

I have my hd7 with an extra battery pack which is spposely make the phone last x2 more than normal and it only makes it through 8 hours a day most time and if am lucky it makes it to 10 hours.. Anyone knows why

Change yr sim card......

interesting.. i wonder how long your battery will last.
im not sure about the HD7, but my optimus 7 comes with Li-ion batteries. the way you use ur phone is killing it.
dont get me wrong, its alright to use it that way, but the thing about li-ion batteries, once you drain it, you can never get it back to 100% charge.
Li-Ion requires frequent charging, even if its only half. NEVER NEVER let it go to dangerous levels, you may not be able to recover back to 100% charge.
search the net and search for the characteristics of li-ion batteries.
there is a popular believe among malaysians & singaporean gadget users, (not sure about people elsewhere), that it is better to drain the battery before charging (some earlier siemens phones have the option to 'drain' battery before charging). That is meant for NiMH batteries to get rid of the 'memory effect'.
Li-ion batteries does not have the memory effect.
charge your phone more frequently, especially with your usage. you will gain more from the battery..

u can drain the battery to empty but u must immediately recharge it...
an empty L-ION damages when its kept in fully discharged state at long periods of time.

i can see this few causes.
1) battery not calibrated, damaged or worn out. Have a check in the service centre,
2) old/unoptimised/ worn out / faulty sim card or APn settings ( this is the biggest culprit in smartphones). U have to change yr sim card every 2 years . this will ensure u have the newest network technologies go hand in hand with OS updates or firmware updates for yr phone . APN settings is another reason, setting the wrong apn settings could lead to battery drain.. another thing is do not use sim card meant for another phone ( example iphone 3G) and use it on wp7 phone ..
They may be configured differently work with the OS and not necessarily optimised for another phone's OS and although it may work, I have experienced his myself when i used th my older iphone 3g sim card in my wp7 phone. Result was battery drain. So always use a newer sim card when u are changing phones,
3) features like location, wifi ect., xbox live, auto upload to facebook accounts, push email...turn them off when not needed

think 2 factors increased yr battery life
connection setup - It has been updated 2 times in the marketplace, so i believe there will be some optimisations . i believe it does something more than the wp7 cellular options
push email "as items arrive" . its microsoft's newest push technology called direct push which supposedly saves battery life.. "as items arrive" is direct push technology

Mango has background tasks, push notifications and live tiles that aren't as volatile, etc.
There's a lot more going on in the background, and a lot more 3G usage going on in the background as well.
Really, it was just foolish for HTC to put a phone out with such a small battery. They had issues with the HD2's small battery (basically same phone) as well as the Evo4G and several of their other phones. They needed to put at least a 1500 mAh battery in this thing.
You can't really expect good battery life out of this phone, especially come Mango.
8 hours is pretty bad, adn that's about the most I can get in NoDo with light usage. I thought my Vibrant's battery was bad. It runs circles around this (though it's gotten more updates, so perhaps more issues were fixed).
Also, WP7 doesn't have an easily accessible GPS toggle so a lot of people (esp those on NoDo) are using phones wiht GPS enabled practically all the time. Might wanna turn that off. It will add about an hour or more to your battery life.
In either case I cannot get through a full day of below moderate to moderate use on this phone. The battery is just too small.
My mom got hte 4.3" new HTC Android on AT&T one of the 4G HSPA+ phones I forget hte name (it's similar to the Samsung so I get them confused) and she doesn't have an issue getting through a day. The battery is much bigger, though... So I blame the battery
Excuse the rambling.

Firmware version related to battery life?

Since there now seem to be a few different firmware versions floating around, shall we see if any of them give better battery life.
Of course we don't have an objective measure of battery life, but we cna get an impression.
My experience:
TMobile UK f/w 1.15.110.10
Battery poor - It needs topping up through the day or I won't make it to teatime, worse than my Touch HD which was 18m old. Similar usage, ie push email, Twitter sync, intermittent browsing, an hour a day ebook reading.
T-mobile UK same firmware
Battery fine, much better than my old G1, need to charge every other day (as opposed to everyday/overnight each day).
Uses (per day):
Push Email
Light Web browsing
About an hour of gaming
About 40 SMS sent
Twitter/Facebook constantly
About 2 hours of music usage - Spotify
Music using BT Earphones, Bluetooth on around 2.5 hours.
That's a big difference in battery life between you two, I wonder if there is a bad batch of batteries?
I think it has nothing to do with batteries or software. It's all about how the phone is used, what the signal strength is, etc.
Mine lasts two days on moderate use, but I charge it every night anyway.

I also have the matrix style live wallpaper running http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/fishnoodle.digitalrain/.
It may be worth noting that I no longer charge overnight, only charging when it's low and until it's fully charged (I used to charge my G1 overnight or basically when I was on the desk, it became overcharged, battery swelled up, would only last about 2 hours but sometimes it would last about 10 minutes).
I also have no problems with signal and am pretty much constantly on HSDPA.

how long full charge takes ? at what battery % you start to charge ur phone?
did you charge till full since you first unbox your phone?
I have my brightness set to half way and have watched a few movie clips lasting maybe 20 mins and have just done a bit of brief messing about and i find the battery drains to about half way after this.
I have not let it drain out yet but it does not look like it would last a day if i had to listen to music surf and do a bit of gaming.

My firmware is same but battery is brilliant for me, try using a power manager and maybe look at widgets draining battery. I'm not using any widgets and have net off when not in use.
I wonder if it's about signal strength. By far the biggest drain on a smartphone is 3G, and my signal is quite variable.

I've just came back from Austria where I was using the net a lot over there for various things and I can tell you now, the signals over there are top notch!
The speeds remain consistent and the signals never go down by more than by one bar.
The T-Mobile network works perfectly even in the Underground!
This I feel had contributed to my battery lasting so long the last 3 days!
I've already noticed more of a drain since being back at home today!

I put it on charge when it starts blinking so less than 14%
Yes I charged it full when I got the phone but that was only for an hour.

I think if you continually charge from when you have 30-90% the battery will perform worse than if you charge it from dead / near dead. I have been charging my tp2 over night when the battery is extremely low and can now squeeze 3-4 days use out of it.

It doesn't really matter with Li-ion batteries. It is recommended to do a full discharge every 30 charge cycles or so for the gauge to recalibrate, but the battery itself has no "memory" effect.
There's no difference if you charge it from 70% or 15%

That must cost a fair bit on the data doesn't it?
I've found with my T-Mobile Desire that the battery is really struggling and I can't get it to last a day as yet. I spent 3 hours with a friend that has an unbranded one and I saw my T-Mobile rom'd battery life deplete faster than his doing the same things. I think the T-Mobile ROM needs an update asap!
Since my last post, my battery the last few days has been bad.
I've also noticed now that it will only charge up to 98% and will only go to 100% if i remove cable and put back in. Then only to drop back to 98% straight away after I have removed it and then drop rapidly.
On T-Mobile using the older firware. Have asked T-Mob if the Firmware is the issue.
My honest guess is that all you guys will see an improvement in battery life over the next few days. Li-on batteries do need a few cycles before they'll give best performance and obviously no-one here has had their phone for more than a week or two.
I'm sure as the phone is rooted/custom roms appear/htc release the kernel/blah blah improvements will be made, but if I were you I'd definitely sit out any changes made purely on the basis of battery life until you've had the phone a couple of weeks. If it's still crappy after that, then it's obviously worth looking deeper.
I'm on tmob contact phone with my firmware version @ *.11 think some ppl have *.10 so not sure if the ota update will come to me but I've found that if I turn everything to manual update and turn 3g off when not using it I can get 3 days out of it with about 1 and a half hours each day of general use. Before that it wasn't lasting a full day! What firmware is every1 on??

Mine is .10 - the Battery at first was really good, I used it abroad in first few days and was great, 3G was used everynow and then, but wasn't a drain like it is over here in UK.
Now i'm getting last few days were on charge it sticks at 98% and drops pretty quickly.
T-Mob have asked me to factory reset it today and monitor to see if any apps are causing the issue rather than the firmware.

First full day at work ..... poor reception and more poor battery life.

Today was my first day at work since i got my Desire on Sat. So it was the day without regular charging.
Firstly, reception was poor as compared to what i was getting with Touch Pro 2. Same network (Orange), same place, less signal bars and less 3G coverage.
Secondly, unplugged phone 7 o'clock this morning, 100% charged. All day only had time for couple of calls (10-15mins). Used internet (3G when available) for max 20-30mins. Tried couple of games for 15-20 mins and at 7 o'clock at night, the battery was 15%. This is not a heavy use by my standards. Used to do a lot more on Touch Pro2 and battery used to last 2-3days. (I know the capaciy difference btw Desire and TP2 battery but still, Desire should last atleat > 24hours)
Not sure if all these issues are related to Orange ROM/Radio. Will we (on Orange) get OTA firmware update like T-mobile, which has apparently improved their battery life? If not then ...... :-(. Not satisfied with the battery life. Shame it is such a good phone but battery life and signal strength is putting me off.
Whats the fun if you have a "superphone" in your pocket but cannot use it to its full potential due to these two isuues.
Mine was the same,
But after a weeks worth of usage, its now reasonable, IE 18 hours between charges,
Fon22
I totally agree, there are other posts telling us to turn off or reduce all sorts of settings, its ridiculous that you would have to run any phone at less than its full potential just to compensate for a poor battery.
Sure you could buy a second battery but if that was necessary then they should put two in the box
If you leave gps on then you are asking for trouble, a lesser extent wifi. Having a toggle on off isn't such a hardship though. Poor signal hammers the battery too.
I easily last the working day (7-7) with an hour of music and 2 hours surfing and a smattering of calls and texts.

Come on guys, if you have a laptop, and you turn on bluetooth, wi-fi, play some games etc, it WILL run the battery down faster. It's just common sense. Just because this phone does heaps of things, dosn't mean it will last forever. As phones get more features, they are getting worse battery life - in general. And android is a data centric device, I would get used to it, or simply turn off some synching features if you need to get through more than half a day. Or perhaps get a spare battery etc.
Just out of curiosity did you have your previous phone to constantly sync throughout the day for time, email, google account, marketplace updates, location, weather using gps, 3g, hsdpa, accelerometer etc? Remember some of these connect are activated every 5 mins or so. Will make it worse if you have poor reception. COMMON SENSE PPL!
My issue is that even after the T-Mobile update, last night I charged phone on this time and it would only get to 98% again. Then drop down quickly.
If I charge it off, It seems to be ok (although I will test this again.)
Frustrating.
My battery life is woeful (TMo uk, updated firmware). I've been trying to figure it out using Juice Plotter to record power usage. Basically, whatever I'm doing, if it's on the battery falls off a cliff - I'd say 10% per 30m and my first impression is that it makes little difference whether networking is enabled or not. This makes little sense to me, I've always found in the past that 3G is just about the most power intensive activity on the smartphone, but it's consistent with some experiences I had flashing roms on my Blackstone - some of them would just run the battery down, others would go for ages. One hypothesis is that when a phone is in that kind of "sick" power state, the drain is not really related to which facilities you're using, but something deeper - perhaps the CPU is running full throttle all the time, or something else. I have no idea what's going on right now but I know I have an unusable phone which lasts half the time my Blackstone did with heavier use. I think many others have the same problem and I wonder if there's a bad batch. Bad news if so as we'd have trouble proving it and getting exchanges.
My next step I think will be to hard reset and run it in a very basic mode for a while, maybe some of the apps are causing it.
I'm also finding out that battery life improves dramatically after the 5th 6th charge. When I first got my Desire I could barely make it through the day, after properly charging and letting it discharge all the way to 10-15% now I get 18-20h of battery life with wi-fi on non stop (but with the setting to to turn itself off after 15mins of inactivity).
I was very worried about this when I first got the phone, but now it's starting to be better and better at battery life. I know my demands from a smartphone when I buy it and if a phone get's me through the day I'm OK with that, plus I have chargers at home, in my car, at work, so it's not a problem
I've got one of the very first batch of T-mobile Desires that were shipped on 26th March. It has been updated with the T-mobile 1.15.110.11 patch.
I last charged it on Saturday afternoon. I've only had to start charging it again this morning Tuesday. I've been making a few calls, probably 10-15 minutes total. A few texts. Browsing with G and 3G, maybe a few of hours worth in total. Little bit of Bluetoothing, though that's only a couple of minutes worth. I've had it down the pub a few hours where the T-mobile signal isn't brilliant, so it will have been doing a little "shouting" to find and communicate with the nearest T-mobile mast.
But that means it's lasted a good 66 hours admittedly with fairly moderate use. GPS, Wifi and Bluetooth are turned off unless needed. And it's not regularly Syncing with Facebook, Twitter and all that stuff. The only regular syncing is the weather.
Not sure if these are bugs with some hardware/software or standard functionality with your usages. I'm getting excellent battery life with my usage patterns/settings and far happier with this than with any of my previous devices, since this adds an exorbitant amount of power-draining functionality and flexibility over them too.
- Heaviest use is netting 28-33 hours.
- Typical use is getting minimum 3-3.5 days.
- Light use (also the norm for me me) lasted 5.5-6 days.
- Basic inconsistent call/message/email/net/stocks/news/stop watch/GPS/ compass/notepad/office/weather/ vid/pic/audio throughout the day kept the battery at 84% after 24 hours. 3G off, using WiFi. I don't keep any but the needy apps/settings running BTW.
- Charges to 100% always and stays up there consistently as expected.
However there is a pertinent aspect yet unmentioned;
Biggest difference between my usage and the typical internet crowd is that I don't use or bother with "social networking" (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc) or its likes nor do I play any games on this (hence sync with such apps is off and any updates are set to manual). However rss feeds, e-mail and IMs with close ones I do use during the day when I have spare minutes.

I'm deffo leaning now that there are faulty batteries out there causing the problem. I can get good life if I can get the battery to charge properly. but when it doesn't battery lasts hardly half a day. I don't use any apps that require automatic updates (all manual or off). But net on drains it very quickly (if I leave data on). Faulty Batteries I feel.
My Desire has a better ability to hang on to a weak signal than my other phones. I am on T-mobile. Battery life is adeqaute, in that, I can get through a day of use before a charge is needed. Will switch-off GPS and see what happens -I never had GPS on all the time on my other Smartphones.
Coming from a G1 that could barely make it through the day on standby this phone seems pretty good.
I got mine last friday it has just come off of it's third charge. I charged it for 3 hours when I got it, ran it right down >10% then left to charge up fully again.
I installed JuiceDefender and bought the UltimateJuice upgrade as soon as I got the phone.
Day 2 (with JuiceDefender) - battery lasted 13h27m, thats with WiFi, phone calls, MMS, 3g, internet browsing/showing it off to mates in the pub and then listening to an album on spotify in the car.
Considering this is a new battery and it still needs several charges before it is working at full capacity, I think that is pretty good for a smart phone! It can only get better, right?
JuiceDefender - I can't recommend this app enough, I don't want to mess about with Task Killers (that don't really save battery), I don't want to stop stuff syncing (because thats the whole point of this phone) but I want to optimize my battery life to get me through the day and this app does it so well!
I've currently got it setup to turn 2g/3g off when in standby but set to turn data back on every 5mins for 30s to allow apps to sync. You can specify a longer interval which will obviously save more battery over the course of a day. The phone connects back to a 2/3g connection so quick when you bring it out of standby so your not waiting around to get back online.
Switch on WiFi at known locations - I have this setup because at home, 3g signal is a bit patchy and it probably uses more battery constantly trying to get a 3g signal all the time, than it does if it is just connected to WiFi.
Turn data off between 2am-8am while I am sleeping.
Turn data off when battery is below 15% - with my G1 it would hit 15% just as I'd be heading home on the train in the evening, so I'd turn data off just so I could send a few texts or so I had just enough battery to make a call. So I figured I might as well use that last 15% battery for basic phone operation and give me enough battery to get home! I probably don't need this with the Desire though.
Any one else using JuiceDefender?

However there is a pertinent aspect yet unmentioned;

WOW, can I have your battery please ...
What did u do to get this powerhouse. Was it weaker in the begining and got better with charges or was it like this from the begining?
I dont use GPS at all. Only for navigation, when in car and then it is on charge. Normal day.. no gps, no auto data connection - do it manually when internet connecttion is neede. But battery doesn't last a day, merely 12-14 hours. Charged 3 times yet, only 3 days old Desire.
I cant find juice defender in the market?
When I first got my Hero I remember my battery life being terrible, most of it was down to fiddling all the time, however over time my usage changed and the battery had been charged a lot the life was a lot better. Also there were a number of radio upgrades installed, which probably helped.
Since I've got my Desire, the "desire" to fiddle hasn't stopped and I feel as if I'm in the same situation as I was with the Hero.
My opinion is that over time the battery life will be better, as with the Hero.

Yes both Ultimate Juice and Juice Defender are in the Market.
Juice defender was missing for me a couple of hours ago. But actually, when I installed it thinkgs started to go wrong for me. May be a coincidence, or may be a conflict with some other sw.
Following shocking power drain, I have hard reset, and left it with nothing syncing and all networking disabled. As you'd expect, battery level is barely falling in standby. Now to start adding things back in and see what efects it has. First step is to spend 30 mins browsing over 3g, previously this would take out 10% of my battery.

Battery doesn't last long. should i change it?

Ok, my battery is weird it doesnt last long. it dropped from abut 95% to 70% over night, with checking email every 30 minutes with k9 and the mail app every 4 hours. My phone doesn't last very long either, I haven't tested it fully. I always keep charging it, when im in the house.
I bought it from T-Mobile and i could swap it. Should I?
Jason
Might be worth it, I have Friendstream updating default setting, Googlemail (although it's push) on at all times, browsing a fair bit (on mobile net and WiFi) and a few calls and it last 2 days-ish...I'm using a generic Desire on latest FW
Mine's the same. I didn't think it would be worse than my old BB Bold for battery life, but it really is very poor. I don't think you have a fault, it's just the way it is.
I wondered about closing background apps but I've read that having them open doesn't impact battery life. I do have a few background things going on though that will affect it, so maybe I need to consider if I really need them or not (frequent email syncing, contacts/calendar syncs, etc.).

Have you put the phone down for long periods in-between uses, or have you spent a fair time writing emails or just playing with it? I've spent a fair time on mine but not constantly, and no more than I used to with my BB Bold. I used to writing emails constantly on my Bold and the battery would last a good day, but until I'm used to this keyboard I won't be doing that on my Desire.
So It won't make a difference if i swap it? I also didn't do the standard charge at the start. Couldn't resist playing with it. So It was on charge while playing with it. Could that make a difference?
I'm in work a lot and I'm not constantly on it - just check for emails/SMSs every hour or so so prob spends a lot of the time in standby. I'm on it more on the weekends but it still lasts well into day 2

If it works otherwise then I doubt there is a fault that would cause the battery to run down but nothing else not to work.
Not charging the battery at the start is one of those things that some say makes a difference, other say it doesn't. With Lithium-Ion batteries I always thought they didn't need that initial charge, but I can't say for sure. Anyway, what might help is if you did a full charge then a complete discharge (use it until the phone turns off) then a full charge again. With older batteries at least, that tended to help them last longer.
There a a few threads on this alread here and on the Android Forums.
There is a problem where the phone when charged left on, only goes upto 98%. However the phone will soon drop to 90% and lower quickly, indicating the phone has not charged properly.
If you unplug and reconnect, it will go back to 100% but almost as quick as tying your laces, it will go from 100 to 98% and continue to drop.
It could be faulty batteries.
I was hoping the FW update would fix but it hasn't as I found out last nite.
Or should I just buy another battery?
I've been having similar issues,
I get much much better battery life without mobile networks on, and alot of application crashes/phone reboots to get it work like I expected.
Took some data:
1hr of phone in sleep mode w/ mobile internet on = 4% battery
1hr of phone in sleep mode w/out mob internet on = >1% battery
So I can get a good two days if I don't have any internet with moderate use, but about 16 hours with internet always on and moderate usage. If I really 'rag' it and use alot, I can get about 50% done in a few hours (not constant use either, just alot of google goggles mainly!)
This coupled with the crashes and reboot made me get an exchange, I'm just hoping it's better, and really hoping its not worse..
Wish me luck, I wish you all the same.
After couple weeks my original battery seems to last longer - I do with 1,5 days now (with some browsing, 3G, occasional GPS and bluetooth, weather & gmail sync, dl apps from market etc). So it might be true that after the initial couple weeks of usage and charging the battery performs much better.
Intrestingly T-Mobile promised to send me a new battery over a week ago. As it never arrived I called them and was told they dont have any... but they would credit my account with £20 to buy one. Today... I received an extra battery from T-Mobile!!! No idea what is going on - and if I still have that £20 credit in my account
I will give that new battery a loooong first charge, see if it helps.
what about the 3000 mAH batteries?
Are they any good and would it work for the Desire?

Won't help, once it's at 100% the charging will stop. There is no such thing as 'long charging' li-ion batteries or 'trickle charge' a li-ion battery.
You can try to do a full first charge (until the green light burns) and then fully discharge (until the phone goes off). Then fully charge again. This will calibrate the battery chip and make sure you see the correct percentage.
If battery life is still no good then it's because you use the phone too much. Read: constant weather updates, friendstream updates, push mail and other stuff that constantly use the mobile connection. Also turn off gps unless you need it.
Turning off those services and turning off the 'always on mobile connection' can double your battery life (read: standby time).
It's not something magical, it's completely normal. If you want the phone to do a lot, it will obviously use a lot of battery.
Just for the sake of it, put the phone in airplane mode. You will be amazed how long it will last.
It's the main problem with modern mobile devices. Battery usage and capacity are no longer in good balance. What we need is more compact batteries that have more capacity.
At the moment it's clearly a comprimise between battery size (thus capacity) and battery usage. It's up to you to see how much you want to comprimise.
And so far, with every HTC phone, after a few (radio rom) updates battery life increased.
And... what everyone seems to forget, when you first get your phone you will fiddle with it.. a lot.. And once you have it for like a week or two, you start using it differently. Usually ending up with better battery life!
Try to run it down to around 5-10% after each full charge, but don't let it go completely dead if you can avoid it. Do this a few times and you will notice an improvement. Plus of course, when the novelty wears off and you use it less the same will happen.
Back when I got my Touch HD it would only just last a day, but by the time I was on the upgrade path I could get 3 or 4 days out of it!
Just to confirm, I was a bit worried at first about the battery life of the Desire. The first 2 days I could only manage to get 7 / 8 hours out of it. When I turned data sync off at night, it still lost 40% of the battery .. doing absolutely nothing.
However as mentioned before, I'm now on day 6 and now I can easily get 36 hours of browsing / texting / calling 2 hours + / even playing occasionally games. At night, without data sync, it drops just 4%.
So if you're worried about your newly acquired Desire's battery sucks, It really needs some calibration. After a few days it'll work as you wish.
T-mob battery
Hmmm.. Not sure what T-mob is up to. They promised me a £20 credit to by a battery (they didnt have any in stock) then I received the battery in post. I called 150 and they confirmed the £20 credit is still there for the next bill...
I couldnt be happier with T-Mob! Besides this I got 100txt/100min, plus 60 min included to Eurasia, Internet and 40 free txt to Europe = all for £10 a month!
Now I just need a case for it... waiting for the PdAir one to come, had one for my Compact IV and loved it. Its the flip one that opens upwards not down, so wont mess with the hardware buttons.

I really hope that's the case...
I got my Desire on Tuesday, first use was on Wednesday.
Yesterday (Friday) I put the Desire into Airplane Mode - I deactived everything. Turned off WLAN, mobile Internet, Syncing off manually before I went into that mode, just to be sure. When I went to bed, I had 72% battery left. When I woke up...50%...seriously, what the f...?!?!
8 hours of doing absolutely nothing uses 22% battery?! It's really annoying at the moment, absoluetly unusuable unless I'm home and know I can plug it in any second. When I'm out, I don't even dare to use mobile Internet, because even without it it only lasts till I get home (no WLAN, no mobile internet, just using it as a "telephone"...).

You expect the phone to stay turned on without using any power? This isn't a dumb phone, it is running powerful components and 8 hours doing "nothing" is relatively long time and the power usage of keeping those components powered at idle levels is going to add up no matter what. If you can't bear to turn the phone off if you can't control your usage, carry a charger or battery you should have got a dumb phone.
Bear in mind that the full capacity of the battery won't be reached until several charge/discharge cycles have been done, especially when you are using the battery for the first time on a new phone or on a phone with updated firmware. I noticed this while flashing custom ROMs on a previous handset. I'm sure we will also notice improved battery performance when firmware updates become available.

[Hint] Battery Usage (2 days 30%)

I've always been impressed by the battery life on Defy ever since I owned it. I haven't owned other smartphones before to be able to make a true comparison but using electronic devices for a long time I can tell the battery usage on Defy can be impressive. However, there were times I noticed the battery was drained so quickly.
In my latest watchful examination of battery usage I have achived to use only 30% of the battery for more than two days. Here is a summary of my usage in the past two days;
4 Hours Music Playback (PowerAmp)
30 Mins wireless
About 16 hours airplane mode
No phone calls on my mobile but I did dial a number several times
I have fully charged the mobile on Friday morning and on Sunday morning the battery has 70% charge.
Hint:
As it was stated in user manual it is recommended to charge the phone from mains socket whenever is possible. I can confirm that I've seen battery improvement after recharging the battery by mains socket after several times.
Since I don't have a use for MMS I have renamed the APN server. The same trick can be used to disable data and that saves battery life too if you don't use your phone to push/pull data.
In the past 2 days my network type has been set to 2G only. The automatic setting certainly have dramatic affects on battery.
Before going to bed I put the phone to airplane mode since the reception in my bedroom is very weak and this increases the battery usage.
With simple measures the battery life can be extended (noticeable) more than what you'd expect.
I'm very pleased with the battery usage so far. Nonetheless, I will buy a spare battery as soon as it is available in the UK.
Happy New Year XDA
Yours are the most impressive stats for the battery use. I've set my Defy into saver mode, and the network data to 2G as well (I only use it to sync up with Gmail (plus Calendar and Tasks) and my employer's Exchange email) and get down to 50% after two days of moderate use, which is enough for me not to worry about running out of juice if I'm away from home for a few days. Yes, the Defy can be pretty frugal with battery use.
I ended up having my original Defy swapped because of concerns that the battery wasn't up to scratch and the new one's been brilliant.
I'm in 3G all the time, never put it in airplane mode, and after 62 hours I still have 20% left - that's with me having used it for some calls, texts, web browsing, facebook and a good couple of hours of Angry Birds as well.
Definitely the best smartphone around for battery life IMO.

What does mains socket mean? The wall outlet (I am in the US).
If so, how else would you charge? Computer USB?
If its the bit in the wall that the electricity comes from then its the same thing :L and yeah you can charge it from a computer USB but it takes a little bit longer

Yeah, seriously.
I'm not talking about hours of calls, more like 15 minutes or so. Maybe an hour or two total web browsing and facebook and perhaps an hour on Angry Birds.
Part of the reason it lasted so long was that I just didn't touch the phone on Christmas day at all, so that was 24 hours with basically zero use, which is unusual.
The next charge last more like 2 days, which I think is closer to how I'll be using it normally.
if you put it in air plane mode, and a couple hours later u turn air plane mode off. will u get all of your notifications? like calls, texts and stuff that people sent to u while the phone was in airplane mode
There is true gem on the Market named JuiceDeffender Beta - I used it since my Milestone and it really does what it says it does. All the hints you mentioned already included in the program and are being controlled by it. For example, as soon as you display turns off your network automatically switches to 2G. In paid version you can even adjust processor's speed when needed (underlocking of course, in terms of battery saving) However i am currently on free version and it's enough to make the battery last almost twice as longer.
I had some problems installing it on Defy, but they were all gone as soon as I rooted the phone.

How did you get the 3G -> 2G to work? I can not enable that feature, as I am not using a CyanogenMod rom and I can not download/install AOSP helper as it suggests. I am using the beta and UltimateJuice, which I purchased after seeing what features it provided. I'm using the CPU features to do what SetCPU did for me - no need to have two packages with overlapping features installed.

HD2 WP7 battery

ok so I used my phone for about 3 hours last night tweaking things and playing with stuff and didn't charge it overnight and used it a bunch today and the battery indicator looked like it was at about 70%. probably not accurate, but the fact that it's even still on amazes me because it's probably got 8 hours of playing with it and 6 hours of standby and still going strong.
I think a full drain then a full charge might reset the battery indicator for accuracy, I wish we had like a "current widget" for WP7 to see the ma drain.
how you guys doing on HD2 WP7 battery drain? Mine seems to be even better than WM6.5
I have the exact opposite experience as you. My HD2[7]'s battery life is crap. It was fully charged last night and I had left it in my drawer with the Wi-fi off. After coming from work a half hour ago, I saw that the battery was almost drained.
Also, shouldn't the battery icon show the plug when the phone is being charged? My phone is on and booted into WP7, the red light is showing but the battery icon shows no animation or the plug. EDIT: WTF IT FROZE ON ME, I had to remove the battery!
Finally, what's with the random reboots? I've seen 2 already.

I think its something related to the SD cards you are using.
If the Sd card you are using is not compatible with WP7 then you will get random reboots.
And the main thing here is that there is no specific way to know which SD card will work and which wont work with WP7
By the way my battery is somewhat draining faster than the Android I was using on my HD2

What I meant to say was, we don't know which SD card will work with WP7 on HD2.
I wasn't talking about the official WP7
Well the stock 16gig TMOUS card works just fine.
my battery seems to be fine, i use my scale based on my school schedual. with android from 7 am to 4 pm around 50 to 40 percent.
today running wp7 i unplugged it around 8is and about 6 is it had very little black on the battery icon. im going ot charge it up fully, then kill it, to see if that helps reset the battery stats
Well when i first flashed WP7 my battery was over lasting.. After i manually rebooted because i just felt like doing so, my battery has started to drain a little bit to fast.
Are there any marketplace apps that can monitor this stuff yet?
Update: Last night, after making sure that my phone was fully charged, I turned off the wifi and removed the SIM card and didn't touch the phone again until a half hour ago (about 12 hours standby time in total). The indicator is showing about 50% battery life remaining. This SUCKS, and any helpful comments about this will be appreciated.
just considering its not supposed to be on the phone...
also what theme are you using
and since microsd polling it may have a lot of impact on standard battery life...
plus, let's be real, it is an htc...they're not battery efficient

Here are my settings: Dark background theme, purple (hate the color normally, but somehow manages to look nice on the HD2), 30 seconds lockscreen timeout, Wifi off, Location off.
I tried removing the MicroSD, but the phone then becomes unusable with frequent freezes and reboots. I'd love to check if the card is affecting battery life if the damn phone would let me to.

HTC puts bad batteries in their 4.3" phones. They've been using 1230 mAh batteries forever (over a year). Blackberry curves come with 1150 mAh batteries so you can see what that size is somewhat optimized for: feature phones and smartphones with small non-touch screens.
Most smartphones with a 4"+ screen running Android or WP7 have 1400+ mAh batteries (the i4 and Droid X also have 1400, Galaxy S and Incredible have 1500). That's why the battery life is bad.
And it's also the reason why I've never really given the phone much consideration - the battery and the TFT LCD screen they used on it.
That being said, the battery life depends on you usage. When I used my HD2 as myprimary device the battery life was terrible. Once I got my Vibrant and used it only as a PMP, the battery life was terrific because it didn't have a SIM Card and I only used it on WiFi and to play Music and Videos.
But people who use Curve 3Gs as their primary devices and are constantly BBMing and/or SMSing people in addition to calls report days-worth of uptime (emphasis on the plural).
My battery life is on par with what it was on android (about 12-16 hours with moderate usage of web, email, facebook, and heavy twitter) and its configured the same was as my android:
1) wifi is on when I need it (maybe 20-45 minutes a day for some marketplace downloads or something)
2) location is always on
3) screen is set to manual, low and 3 minute time-out
4) I have 3 IMAP email accounts that check between every 15 minutes and every 30 minutes.
5) I have a VERY active twitter account that updates every few minutes (not sure exactly as it doesn't appear to be live tile integrated)
6) facebook and google sync
7) HTC HUB is usually running updating the weather and stocks as often as it likes
8) dark brown theme
9) ringer off and no haptic feedback
Hope that helps anyone.
I do agree that the HTC supplied battery is sub-standard. Does anyone know where I can see what the battery percentage is acutally at? I only have the icon in the top right.
Just as a bit of information, my HD7 gets significantly better battery life than my sister's Galaxy phone. Also, those of you removing the SIM, make sure you also enable airplane mode, incase the phone continues to still search for signal... Battery size isn't as important as power management, though I do agree I wish we had a bigger battery on our HD7s... we might have sacrificed a little space for it though...
I think the battery meter is off. After about an hour of playing with Netflix, Zune and watching videos with the ign app my battery meter indicated that I had a lil juice left. I went to sleep without charging the phone. I was sure it would be dead when I woke but it wasn't. I was able to get about 2 more hrs out of it while using the Zune player streaming a playlist I saw.
Sent from my HD2 Windows Phone 7 using Board Express.
There is no third party multi-tasking in WP7 and Android Users usually have more apps/services updating stuff in the background. Yes, WP7 will get better battery life than lots of Android Phones and even theHD2 with the same battery in it due to that simple fact along, nevermind all the other exceptions and the obvious disclaimer: different use patterns are different.

There is no third party multi-tasking in WP7 and Android Users usually have more apps/services updating stuff in the background. I have ATK or whatever it is installed on her phone, not sure if the AMOLED screen uses more juice though
Don't get me started on task killers and android. ATK may be causing the poor battery life. Those process and apps you think your killing are just gonna restart and cause more battery drain. Android does not need task killers. I suggest trying auto killer wich tweaks androids internal memory management to be more or less aggrsive. Phone must be rooted though.
