Introduction thread - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Finally, this section took too long to get here!
Now, let's get to it:
Tell us what phone you are coming from, and if you plan on developing in some form for the E4GT.
I'm known as Mr. Z. I'm coming from an Epic 4G, and I plan on theming for this device. Also, I'm part of a group called Epic Revolution for Android, so I'd be looking forward to good stuff coming from us in the future.

Coming from the original EVO. Bought it on its launch date last June. That was my first smart phone so all I know is HTC. Will be curious to see what Samsung has to offer.
Unfortunately have no developing skills.

Coming from a evo. I got one on launch day and ran all the Snap development kernels at the beginning... Along with Netarchys too. The original evo development was so fun. I think this phone may bring that back.

Coming from the Epic 4g, got on release date. Flashed everything high and low and plan to do so here too Can't wait till it comes out.

Coming From the Epic 4G ... I Can't develop at all
But i can help provide help to users who need it ...
Can't wait to get to know you guys ...

I'm coming from the Epic 4G... I'm not a developer or themer but I plan to contribute in any way I can aside from that.

Coming from a launch date Epic as well. Hope to learn enough to develop. May share my theme if I get it up to par with what some of the dev teams are able to offer. Glad to see a few familiar faces Mr Z and iSaint.

I am coming from the Epic 4G. I got it on launch day. I am not a dev but I test for just about every one that we have. Obviously, I will be flashing this phone quite a bit as well.

Hello everyone. I still have my Evo 4G, tried many ROMs and kernels, and made a few things myself.
Samsung has left a bad taste in my mouth from their previous phones, but the E4GT is too appealing not to try. I'll definitely take this phone for a spin. I know a bit about android and can find my way around, so I'll do my best to help out and add to this community if I keep this phone.

Coming from an Epic 4G. Been waiting months for this phone! hopefully it doesn't take me too long to get used to not having a physical keyboard.

I'm on the fence still. I'm thinking about giving my evo 3d to my wife so I can pick up the gs2. I'm gonna have to take it for an in store test run run on Saturday to see if I like the larger display.

Coming from the Evo 4G, I plan to try and provide as much tech support for the device as I can, just like on the Evo forums.

It looks like we're going to have an awesome community behind this beastly device.

Hero - EVO - Nexus S 4G - Epic Touch.
Can't wait for this phone...crazy powerhouse. I may go back to the Nexus S 4G depending on how long ICS takes to come to the Epic Touch. But I'm keeping both.

Considering the ET4G still... I still have my epic 4g, had it since launch. Also had an evo from launch as well as the og droid so I've been with android for some time. I'm learning java and android development but I'm still in early stages... I'll be trolling these forums for a while to see how development picks up around here and if it turns out well i will surely be making the jump.

Im coming from the Epic 4G. I hated the keyboard but bought it anyways because all the hype going on about the galaxy s. I rarely used the keyboard, partly because it skipped keys.
Ill be picking up my epic touch on friday. Im excited about this beast!

Developers needed to port sense to the Epic!! Please Help

Hello,
I am organizing a team of developers to port sense to the Samsung Epic. Does anyone want to help???
Please Reply to this thread if you are interested. Once we get enough developers, we will discuss what ROM we should use as a base and start working on it.
Thanks

im not sure how u would go about doing it... but feel free to put me down for helping u out if u need help.
Shouldn't this be posted in the Epic forums? Also, not to come off as an asshole, but if you wanted Sense, you should have bought an Evo.
Thanks, a bunch, I am looking for 3-5 more people to carry out the load evenly.
We will then decide what ROM should we use as a base and start the work!!!!

Well, I have also posted this in the Epic forums, just am looking for developers who know how to deal with sense as well, so I posted this on the Evo forums. I used to have an Evo, but switched to the Epic due to the need of a keyboard. Enough with that, are there any more developers who would like to help?
Thanks

Just a thought to port the EVO shift may be good due to slide out keyboard they both have. Will be a tough port due to such different screens. I'm not too good with this but willing to try with kitchen. My wife has a epic maybe she will let me test some.
I know she wants sense on it.

Evo Shift Rom is good, but I was thinking more Desire Z, but its not final yet, it depends on what the team decides. We will discuss everything once we get enough members. If you are willing to volunteer, please reply to the thread.
Thanks
Desire Z is a GSM phone, therefore it will have some issues like no 4G. Myn just realized Warm Z TwoPointTwo which has some issues like no 4G and no EPST. I would suggest going with the Evo Shift if you're going to port a ROM.
Ok, I will keep that in mind. Are you also helping out with the ROM or just wanted to add a suggestion?
Thanks

good luck..
Am I the only one that finds it a little ironic that Epic devs are trying to get Sense while EVO devs spend their time getting rid of it?

The screen is the least of their concerns when porting something like this. The framework that HTC uses is completely different than Samsung. Samsung uses a different type of filesystem that might have issues with Sense, blah blah blah...
There are a million things working against porting a ROM like this. There was a Sense port for the Droid 1 at one point but it was a tremendous PITA.

[Q] CM7 on Fascinate now?

I hate to do this but did you guys see this. I really wish we were so close on the Epic. Is our phone really so different(I admit I don't know much about the differences)?
I have been following a Twitter that I think should be showing the commits but haven't seen any changes in a while. Has anyone heard anything recently? Are people still working on it? Ready but wait for the source to GB? Or has it been given up on?
Waiting on source from GB

I almost posted this the other day, but I figured i'd get flamed cause it probably affects us 0% that they have it
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G.
No dude? When did the Fascinate get source?
EDIT: *Chanting* MAKE A PORT! MAKE A PORT! MAKE A PORT! MAKE A PORT!
We'd have a better change getting official gingerbread tonight than getting a port of thay imo
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G.
I agree with Zanderman. Although ports seem to "sound easier" to accomplish, that isn't always the case. I've heard lots of talk about it being easier and a lot more productive if we got Devs to build it once source is released opposed to porting it. patience is key here, which a lot of us don't seem to have anymore -__- I'm confident our Devs will get it working soon tho, we just need good ol' Samsung to release code, which they like taking their sweet time with -__-
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
But isn't the only difference that affects the Rom, the different bands that Sprint and Verizon use? They're both CDMA, so if we built a AOSP GB Kernel, we could probably use their ROM, but if not, it'd be easier to port than the GSM Galaxy S and variants. Keyboard shouldn't affect the ROM much.
But they don't have Source either! How did they get it is my question.
Bump and a thanks if you answer my question
Because their developers decided they needed to build their own, and got it right. We have to wait becase we know we're getting future updates.

[Q] XDA Samsung Development Teams - What is the landscape like for Samsung dev

Hey all, let me be very candid. I am coming from the OG EVO camp and we had an excellent set of developers (toast, TEAMWIN, Unrevoked,etc...)
My main concern with Samsung, is that most Samsung users say "You better like what you get when you buy it, because that's how it will stay". Now, I know that Samsung will likely update the E4GT some, but probably not as much as HTC does.
This being said, have those of you that are previous Android/Samsung owners (such as Epic 4G) experienced a good set of devs and development for Samsung products? I am seeing Team ACS pop up, but I don't know much about them. Do you feel like Samsung's lack of support down the road for E4GT will be made up for for the Samsung devs here at XDA? Thanks for any feedback, this pretty much seems like the best phone ever produced...

Comparing the OG Epic 4G dev community to the Epic Touch 4G community can't work. This device is MUCH more popular. Either way ACS has the most popular ROMs on the OG Epic 4G also.

He was comparing the Epic community to this one. On the Epic, everything is really difficult to develop. The keyboard and some of the internals make it difficult. This phone will have tons of top notch development. I am optimistic that we will get timely updates as well. You have to remember the Epic was a niche phone. I think this phone will have development more like the Evo

Devs got 2.3 running well on the Samsung Moment, and even have CM7 working (mostly) on it. The dev community are the ones that fixed the infamous data lock problem, not Samsung.
The ET4G has FAR more interest by devs than the Moment ever did, so I would not be worried at all about development.
You'll just need to look around and take a little bit from each community... ACS, XDA and SDX are all great resources.

OHH, that makes sense. In other words, you think development of this phone will more closely parallel the development of the International GS2 because it's more similar? That's very exciting news. So far I have heard @lithid may come over and even rumors of @calkulin, which are two great names from the EVO 4G camp
theres no support like htc dev support...#just sayin...

[Q] Syndicate ROM for the Epic 4G Touch?

I was wondering if ACS Team is working on a Syndicate ROM for the Epic 4G Touch? Coming from my OG Epic 4G laced with Syndicate Frozen 1.2. That ROM is tha **** fo' real. I really hope you guys do cook one up. I can see MAD donations. I have use many Epic roms but always went back to Syndicate. IT'S the BEST OG EPIC 4G ROM. PERIOD!
+ 1, you've got my donation for sure. Have not even bother with trying other roms, not until Syndicate or mikmik come up with one. Will wait it out!

I have to say banzai was great too. But I have to agree, ACS was a good one.
I loved the original syndicate ROM for 2.1, but the second I never could get to work right went to bonsai after that loved them both though, and I Would love to donate if we could get some more of that love on the epic touch!

They were getting ready to start plans on SRF with a 2.3 GB base, but it never really materialized. I don't know exactly why, but it would be very nice to see an SRF offering for the E4GT. It was my go-to rom of choice for the Epic.
My concerns with development around the Epic Touch lies in the trend that many people refuse to upgrade to the Touch from the original Epic. It's just not worth the upgrade considering the gain in hardware/software, especially when considering the impending release of LTE devices.

Chris41g was working on SRF 1.3 when I upgraded (I have the test build and it was great) so maybe he will work on one now that he has an ET4G...that's purely speculation though. I haven't heard a word about it

Hello - New to XDA, Sprint, and Android

I didn't see anything regarding not making an intro thread and I know in most forums its welcomed so I thought I would go ahead with it.
I am coming from AT&T with an iPhone 4S 64gb. I was finally fed up with AT&T's crap so I left them and came to Sprint last weekend.
Of course being in this forum it is assumed that I have an Epic 4G Touch which I do and so far I am really liking it over the iPhone. (if you had told me 6 months ago that I would be saying that I would have laughed, very hard!)
I even decided to check out Android Development for myself which is what actually brought me to XDA looking for some info to setup an AVD for our phone.
I have read lots of great things over the past few days and hope I can contribute more once I get more familiarized with the device and Android.
So here I am making this post rocking out to some Sneaker Pimps Pandora channel enjoying the new Droid life.

Welcome and hope you have a good time. There are some great people here and you got your phone at a perfect time. ICS development is on the move to due a recent leak.
Welcome.
What crap from AT&T were you fed up with? I just left Sprint and the E4GT for AT&T and the iPhone 4S lol. Was tired of Sprint's crap-ass data speeds in my area. I have a love/hate relationship with the iPhone, I really miss my E4GT.

I live in the Oklahoma City area and for over 3 weeks I was seeing 3G speeds of around 0.13 Mbps down on my iPhone 4s as well as my fiancee's on my plan. I was also seeing this on my 3G AT&T iPad 2, and others that had iPhones on AT&T. Every time I called they would tell me that it was because I am a high data user on an Grandfathered Unlimited plan and was limited because nothing in our area was going on. When I told them about other's issues they would respond with "Im sorry I cannot comment on others accounts or lines only this one" after enough of that I was fed up and left. Funny thing is last week I got a call from someone at AT&T checking on my service saying there was an issue locally after all. They just seem to have poor customer service in the past few years, I sure hope I am happier with Sprint. I was going to go with Verizon but the fully unlimited plans on Sprint along with 23% employer discount made me choose them.
Thanks to all the others for welcome's!
