LCD Density Changer - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

What are your thoughts on this.. Ive never used it on my epic but with all this extra screen space do you think it will work well with it?.. might actually work out well with this screen
Edit.. that was supposed to say lcd density changer
Tapatalkin' it from my Epic 3g

I am definitely planning to use lcd density changer once I get my epic. At 800x480, things will be huge.

This was the first thing I do on my Evo's, change it to 190. I can't wait to do it on this phone and find that sweet spot.

bump. has anyone tried? working / not working?

Yep. 190 or 200 works well. Doesn't break much. Dialer gets wonky, so does the Volume button on the pulldown shortcuts. I think Contacts too. But I use custom launcher, dialer, contacts, etc, so it doesn't affect me.

im running mine at 160 dialer seems to be a bit wonky but it works

ok i finally got around to installing this thing.. man i gotta say i love it so far.. if we could get the stock dialer and some other little quirks worked out this would be perfect

I know. At native 240, this display is comically huge. It looks like a clown prop. The sad thing is, as many have already noticed, changing density/DPI is an "unnatural" thing and will always cause some apps to be deformed. A screen of this size with such a low resolution was a huge design flaw.

yah it is a shame. but not a deal breaker. but with lcd changer it just feel right.. maybe we can try to get some of the talented devs on here to work on the issues..

What about if you flash a custom dialer? Will it resize properly?

ive heard custom dialers work.. but i havent tried yet. in my experience, custom dialers dont change the in-call dialer though.. also the dialer isnt the only problem. the calender is messed up as well along with other little things

[Q] Hack for enabling landscape in Sense?

Sorry if this has been raised elsewhere, but I couldn't find it anywhere...
I know many don't like HTC's Sense. Personally I like it fine, with the huge exception that I can't use my phone in landscape half the time. I don't suppose it would be possible to enable landscape would there?
I'm running rooted stock 2.2.
Do you mean on the home screen???

yeah the home screen for sure, but since contacts, calendar, music, etc... are all modified by sense then none of them can go landscape either.
This is the number 1 reason why I don't use sense/Rosie. Its utterly ridiculous that sense doesnt do landscape.

The sad part is all the images are there (in the framework) for Rosie to go into landscape, they just don't let it. I've seen a mod done that accomplishes this but it looked terrible and would have taken a lot of work to get all the elements to look right. Maybe they gave up and decided to focus on a more important project.. like Sprint Nascar.. or the Sprint Promotion app..
Rosie has such potential but is such a let-down. If they weren't going to go the extra mile and make Sense own everything else then they shouldn't have wasted their time on such a crippled UI.
Sense for Windows mobile does landscape. Why not the Android version HTC? Thats one of the reasons I use adw

I completely agree. Its like they got to a point that they were happy and just gave up. The fact that landscape wasn't a high prirority is either lazy or dumb or both. This is basic functionality. As soon as I found adw way back when, Rosie has never touched my phone.
Yeah it does seem pretty dumb. Well I wonder if when the G2 comes out with an actual keyboard it'll mean that we finally have a landscape Rosie...

Id hope. You'd think that the Evo would have had it since they promoted the hell out of the kickstand. What good is a kickstand if you have to turn the phone vertically to use its most basic functions? Thank God for ADW.

Call Screen Question

is there any call screens other than the original epic drag up or down screen? thanks in advance.

There are... but none have been ported for use on the Epic. You can use CM7 and it will give you all the options for different lock screens which in turn will change your incoming call screen.
Other than that, I don't know of any that will work for the Epic.
yea im using midnight rom atm. thanks though. hopefully something will come about.
not sure if this is what you meant, but there are a few dialer replacements on the android market.
The ones that come to mind are:
Go Contacts (seems to be popular lately)
TakephONE
Dialer One
EDIT: I just actually read your post.. and sure these don't have any affect on (during) call screen. but, fwiw.
yea not actually what im looking for but those programs are nice. go contacts i think im actually gonna use just cause i like it. thx

[REQ] Modified CM9 phone.apk for custom DPI

Hi there, I'm kind of new. I've recently been modifying the dpi on our device and I can't tell you how amazing it makes the screen look. However, on cm9, any dpi lower than 190 causes the phone to crash so calls cannot be made or received.
Other phones have mods for this, however, flashing these causes all sorts of issues with service all together. Is anyone up for making one? I'm on my phone right now, but if you need a link I can post when I get home. Hope this is in the right section, thanks.

cm9 seems to have problems with alot more than just the phone with anything under 182. So if you're planning on going lower than that you might be in for a headache. I agree with stuff looking better at lower densities tho. I have my cleangb rom set at 160. Aokp seems to go to lower densities without as much difficulty, and has a lot more options than cm9, is very stable, and better on battery. In fact, LCD density is an option in rom control in system settings on aokp, so there's no need for a 3rd party app to change it. Maybe you should try flashing that and playing with it for a while, see what you think. Its basically cm9, just, better. IMHO at least. There's a thread for it in the dev section if you're interested. Peace nd happy flashing.
Thank you, I'll definitely give that a try as soon as possible. Do you know if aokp can spoof the dpi so the market is still usable?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-2
Not sure what you mean exactly, but I've never had a problem using the market on aokp, and my LCD density is set to 175. What program are you using to change the density? Sometimes the actual app can cause the problem. If your rom doesn't have the option to change density then the best two apps you can use, in my experience, are rom toolbox and blade buddy. Both have free versions that allow you to change a lot of settings. And, just to make sure we're on the same page, when you say dpi, you are reffering to LCD density, correct? Meaning the lower the number the bigger your screen appears (icons and text look smaller). Whereas the default value is 240. Just making sure we're talking about the same thing.

186 is my sweet spot

Are you having any issues with the phone or market apps? Which rom are you using? I think different densities look better with different roms. For instance, IMO, miui doesn't look good with anything under 220, but on the other hand, I have cleangb set to 160 and it looks great. Although I had to use spare parts + to make the text bigger, and the stock phone app won't change density, so when you open it, the dialer only takes up a small portion of the screen. I'm looking for a decent custom dialer to fix that. Any suggestions?

CM9 160 DPI issues...

Hey guys. Just got my SGS2 i love it and the roms are great! i just noticed one issue. When i change my build.prop dpi to 160, a lot of the CM9 tweaks "disappear" im currently on THIS rom and i love it. but i did notice changing the DPI screws up any CM9 ROM. i may just switch to aokp but i prefer CM9..
Ive cleared cache but that didnt do anything.. I am honestly surpised to see how changing the DPI screws a lof of things up... i had no problem changing DPI on my HD2. Any and all help is appreciated thanks guys!
Oh id also like to mention the bottom lights fail to light up as well.
Yeah, those issues are known. AOKP had a phone FC problem with anything lower than 200 DPI.

That explains why it would FC.. thanks man. Is it just a SGH-T989 issue or a AOKP CM9 wide issue?? I think i remember the phone FCing when i had AOKP on my HD2. Thanks for the info! i realized that i'll just change my settings, then change the DPI and they settings still stick!
Just want people to know that upon further investigation I've come to conclude the issue with 160 lies in the fact that android thinks it's a tablet xP so I just set to 162 and everything is just amazing and I love this phone! ^-^

Does your phone.apk still work at 162? I was under the impression that the phone.apk would not work with DPI less than 180 without installing a modified version.

Yes it does able to execute calls, group calls and everything working perfectly. This would have been my biggest pet peeve with ics but now I'm loving it!
Sent from my Galaxy SII T-mobile using Tapatalk
EDIT: Just tried using the phone, like actually making a call, and on CM9 it FC'd however the call went through. Ugh this really bothers me... i wonder why its FCing im gonna logcat
EDIT NUMBER 2: ^^
Well i figured it out. Having a resolution of 162 causes phone.apk to force close. BUT
THERE IS A SOLUTION (Found it in a couple of minutes on google) It is located here i used the phone0264.apk one and its perfect
Second issue, i tried downloading youtube from the market and it came up "device incompatible" which i knew from my HD2 is caused by "odd" DPI values, so i used a "hacked" market which forces a DPI size to the market. Its attached
To install:
Just rename phone0624.apk to Phone.apk and replace the original and make sure permissions are RW-R--R--
To install market, rename it to, Phonesky.apk and again assign the same permissions.
REBOOT
and all shall be swell again

Anyone else hate CM11 on the G Pad?

Rooted and installed CM11 on my G Pad but only kept it for a few minutes do to how bad it looked. I understand that with KK icons got bigger, but CM11 takes it to a whole new level. Icons and keyboard are grossly huge and it looks like poo. Also, i hated the split notification bar. So basically all of the UI elements looked like they're blown up from a phone, but the status bar got the split tablet treatment? Guess I'll stick with stock and G2 xposed until someone can fix how bad these two issues look. Other than that, the rom was fast, but I'd rather not have my tab look like crap than to have speed...

Well, welcome to stock KitKat look? That's just how it looks lol. - Change the density, get a new launcher to fix your icon issue. There's nothing that can't be done, lulz.
CM runs great, theme it to your liking dude. Get Nova Launcher and make the icons smaller. Trebuchet isn't something you HAVE to use. You can do what ever you'd like. Tell you what, I'll go ahead and say the LG stock rom is the one that looks like shiez. By all means tho, stay on it. Doesn't matter to me. Just that I never heard your complaint before. But I suppose it's fair enough. But you can remedy all those "faults" of yours. So this thread just seem.. Ignorant. If you know what I mean.

You know...you're absolutely right. I should have looked around and found that I can change the DPI! Lord knows why it was set to 340 when stock is 273. That helps that, but I don't think the split status bar can be changed to a single one. So there are some things that can't be done...

I'm sure at some point I changed settings /notification drawer /then ticked show in drawer (and I think tick linked layout) and that gave me a single status bar. But it's not working as I remember on the rom I'm on atm. I may have achieved it when I was playing around with the settings on GravityBox (I don't use anymore).
So maybe with a bit of research you could get it working.

I've actually changed my tune on CM11. Not only does it fix the sh*t sound coming out of the speakers on the stock ROM, but the device is now overall snappy and more enjoyable to use. Even though I like the light theme that lg uses, I can't say that CM looks too bad. Oh, and download an app called 'build prop editor' change the 'LCD Density' to 273-300. This makes everything the size it should be. For some reason it's set to 340 right out of the gate and it makes it appear far too large. The only thing that I actually miss about the stock ROM is the notification drawer. I really really really hate the split one for a device that's not all that big. Hell, even my Note 10.1-14 has a single drop down that looks better than this...

Came to the forum to ask exactly about the sound - whether flashing a custom rom like CM would improve it, because honestly, I am greatly dissapointed with how it sounds. I have reasons to believe that it's not only a matter of the speakers but some weird DSP **** LG has put there - some kind of lousy compression... Would you care to elaborate on the sound, in what ways did it improve? Sorry for highjacking this post (oh, by the way, I used to have a - now broken - Nexus 7, the notification drawer works like that even on smaller screens and resolutions like the old Nexus 7 has, but personally I like it!)

Does your tablet have a weird boxy sound to it where speaking voices sound like they're in a tunnel? Cm 11 fixes it. The sound isn't as Loud now at the low and mid range, but still is loud with volume all the way up. But at least it's clear and sounds great.
