Download mode - feel like an idiot - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I have tried 6 times now. What the heck am I missing? Holding volume up and down and power until it comes on. I have tried holding all the but it didn't work either.

Maybe try it like it is required on the nexus? Try holding both volumes, then press the power button quickly but do not hold

From what I gathered from somewhere, it was:
Hold Vup + Vdown.
Press Power until it starts to boot.
Release Power while continuing to hold Vup + Vdown.
EDIT: The above does not appear to work for the E4GT.
I would try Vdown+Home+Power for download mode and Vup+Home+Power for recovery mode as it is in the international SGSII, but I will not receive my E4GT until Monday, sorry!

I was mistaken... looks from here like the international SGSII was Vdown+Home+Power for download mode, and Vup+Home+Power for recovery mode.
Edit: More complete directions for using Odin from the SGSII forums summarized by G'man here.
Edit2: Zzim confirms that for the E4GT, Download=Vdown+Power ; Recovery=Vup+Power. The home button is not necessary.

I wish I knew, I will not be able to test until Monday when I get an E4GT in hand.
Edit: Zzim has a post here showing pics of the E4GT in download mode, but the only method discussed in that thread is the Vup+Vdown+Power, and Zzim stated later that it was through Vdown+Power.

Odin. Not flashing anything yet just making sure I can get into it.

Zzim confirmed that the Home button isn't even needed for Download and Recovery modes on the E4GT, it's just Vdown or Vup + Power.

Even better. I will try it out on my phone once it charges up. By the way I got my phone at 9am EST with very little battery left on it. Used it all day until 3PM before it died. Use would be moderate. Looking forward to trying it out once it is really broken in.

I'm not really up on the sgsII info but after reading this..I have to ask..does the epic touch come with an unlocked bootloader out of the box? So in order to root do you just have to flash a custom recovery and su?

Yes to the unlocked bootloader. Samsung is really getting behind the dev community for this launch, with unlocked bootloader and source code available on launch day.
The root method has not yet been confirmed, but I'm sure it's being worked on as I write this. Hopefully SGSII root methods will work on the E4GT and we'll be off and running.

That's unheard of! ..so I guess it shouldn't take long for some custom roms ..I thinkbi have made mmy mind up and will get this phone although I do love my 3d a couple things irk me like the weak earpiece. Speaker and pita to get a good photo camera ..to me the camera is the big thing. ..the crazy speed doesn't hurt either ..I was watching it run through quadrant and the whole time it was pinned at 60 fps ..

nvm
fixed it

Whats with the Home buttton? Vup gets me reovery..Vdown is DL mode....

Hey, i am going to maintain here a list of all thing which can be pressed and trigger some events in special occasions. I only know about two yet, thats where the community drops in. Post your find here and i will put it in this list.
Reboot
Hold Vol-Down, Trackpad and press Power
Reboots the system! Instant!
Prerequesite: Kernel must be loaded, so does not work the first few seconds after power on.
Warning:This does not unmount your sd-card or unlock any system files. Its basicly the same as removing the battery and should only be used in case your system crashed and does not react anymore. Think of it as a reset button on your PC, which you wouldnt press as long as windows runs fine.
Credits: myself
Bootloader/HBoot
Hold Vol-Down and press Power
Starts the phone and brings you to HBoot Menu
Prerequesite: Phone must be off for this to work
Notes: Navigate through HBoot/Fastboot with vol-up, vol-down and power as select button
Credits: myself
Bootloader during reboot
Hold Vol-Down and wait
Brings you to HBoot Menu
Prerequesite: Phone must be rebooting.
Notes: Make sure to press Vol-Down early enough. Must be pressed in before the boot-splash-image. Navigation, see above.
Credits: myself
Android safe mode
While phone boots, press and hold menu
starts up android in safe mode.only system apps are started, 3rd party apps are ignored
Prerequesite: None
Notes: You have too hold menu for a long time, from power on nearly until sim code dialogue
Depending on the rom you use, there is a small chance, it won't work, or the rom won't start.

Nice, the reboot trick is quite useful.
Thanks,
I know this one but I think it is common for Android. When your phone is off. Push menu button then power. Don't release menu until you see a message on bottom left of the screen. This mode is secure I.e. it loads only software of the ROM without 3rd applications.

By the way that reboot is not graceful. i.e. your sdcard is not properly dismounted and open files are not closed. It is the same as a battery pull, so I would only use if your phone it totally locked up ...

I would agree and would also suggest that the OP put a warning about this in the 1st post. This reboot method should really only be used as a last resort...
One more (probably well known) function is long-pressing the Menu key to bring up the soft keyboard. It used to work even on the homescreen, but it no longer does ever since Froyo. It will works elsewhere though. Really doesn't serve any purpose, though...
warning added. i am a bit surprised, there are not more combinations. seams we got them all now. wouldnt have started this topic, if i knew its only such few things.

I don't think it will harm the proximity sensor, it just that I don't like to see a red light on the proximity sensor light up when using this app as I guess it use more battery...and that's maybe the reason why they have a time-out to kill the app after certain time. Once the app is killed, you still need to press power on. Anyhow, this is my personal opinion only, nothing against the app; I maybe wrong.

Since Apr 3rd, two days after the HOX officially launched in my country. Do not really notice that, maybe because I seldom use the power button as my device is rooted, using quick boot for reboot, reboot to bootloader & recovery, swipe to power on and so on.
Why are you even rebooting once a day? It isn't necessary and will solve all of your problems.

I have Wildfire with s-off from previous thinkering, but i've restored it to stock rom and stock recovery.
Now I wanted to root it again so I manualy pushed cwm trough fastboot but when i reboot in to cwm and try to use it, to do anything it doesn't works. Any option I choose it just loads blank page without any option. Any idea whats cousing this.
P.S. also instaled cwm trough pcimg.zip same thing...

I am rooted and I would like to keep the "stock" look and would prefer to mod than to install a program. I was hoping there was an Xposed module or a mod that I could simply flash. I guess once I get my computer back (God knows how long that will be), I'll make the module myself and upload it here. I'll wait to see if anyone has suggestions until then.
