The Epic 4G Touch is is huge, is it too big? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was just at the Sprint store playing around with the device and it is very nice, but it is extremely large! I put my Evo up to it and the Epic dwarf's it but the screen is the same size I believe. Of course the Epic is very thin and light and does feel nice in your hand.
I happen to carry my Evo in my pocket sometimes and that is already too large, even in cargo shorts the Evo can be felt clunking around. Just thinking it may be too large, too bad they couldn't keep it closer to the size of the Evo all while keeping it as thin as it is.
I really loved the Epic Touch though, I can upgrade at any time but I may wait a month.

It's just a hair bigger than "perfect size" as far as I'm concerned...and that's exactly the size I want, lol. I love the absurd factor.
...and I'm a tall guy with big hands and big pockets, so, I don't even notice it in there...far less so than my E4G and E3D.

I believe it's screen is bigger than the Epic's. Our Epic's have 4 inch screens, and the Epic 4G Touch has a 4.5, which I think is the same size as the Infuse 4G is.

its slight longer and wider than the evo, however it is SIGNIFICANTLY lighter than the evo, you probably won't even notice it in your pocket

I don't disagree that it feels good in your hands, I am just talking about when you transport it in your jeans/shorts pocket.
I can see that being a bit more difficult/uncomfortable to do.

wrong post

So far I haven't noticed a difference between it and my evo in my front pocket. I'm 5'7" and a buck fifty if that makes any difference. I do like that it is lighter, and somewhat less noticeable to me. However I can see either phone being a problem if I wore jeans, but i don't wear jeans here in Hawaii. If I was wearing jeans back home, chances are i'd be wearing a jacket, and would then use the jacket pocket. My two cents.

Howzit brah?!

perfect for me, smaller hands i could see how it would be huge.

Mmm, going to have to go with NO. Maybe if it were an inch larger, but as it stands I think there's a little more room to grow without being 'too' big.

I don't feel like it's too big, in fact it feels like a nice (and very noticeable) upgrade from my Inspire's 4.3 screen.
But if it were any bigger, it would probably be uncomfortable to operate.

Too big for me, but only slightly. I'll manage but I was hoping for 4.3. Any bigger and that is a deal breaker as I will not be comfortable using it as a phone.
Typing takes me a little longer because I have more screen swype through.
Last edit: it makes up for the slower typing with much easier reading. I'll give up a little speed when typing to gain a huge improvement in reading at a glance.

Do you think your phones big?

When ever a friend see my galaxy nexus they always comment how massive it is.
Personally when I first got it I thought it was huge too the first day. Now it seems normal sized to me. I did notice how thin it was though.
What do you guys think?
coming from the S2 it felt slightly bigger, however i got used to it very quickly, feels really good using just one hand. once the One X came out and i held my friends one, it made the nexus feel slightly better in the hand
its got a very nice feel to it and it'll probably feel even smaller once i try out the S3
It's still too big, but it's the best phone choice currently, so I will be happy with it. Hopefully when Google fleshes out the Nexus line in November, there will be additional size choices.
I have fairly large hands, but when I hold the phone in my right hand, my thumb cannot reach the top-left portion of the screen without losing balance of the phone. Lack of one-handed operation is going to be a showstopper for most people.
Its a touch too big. I'd prefer if they could've either dropped the screen size to ~4.5" or reduced the physical dimensions by a couple mm each way.
Coming from the galaxy note it feels like a tic tac box. But I think it has the perfect form factor
Sent from rooted Jitterbug running ICS
One-handed, with a little effort, I can touch anywhere on the display. So it's not too big for me.
I think its a great size. I was a big fan of the 4.3" screens, but the extra .35" really makes a difference. Its a good difference.
My sister saw my GN today for the first time. She said "wow the screen looks so nice, but why is it so big?"
She has an iPhone and I responded with "why is yours so small?" Sibling rivalry never ends.

I can barely reach the far top left corner when holding it with only my right hand. I would much prefer a 4.4 inch which I think is a nice sweet spot to all this massive phone war.
Hopefully the next Nexus will either remain the same or drop it down a notch.
It seems normal sized now, coming from my OG epic 4g.. its a monster. Definetly difficult to handle with one hand but once you get the grip just right its pretty seamless.
Wish phones would go back to a 4in screen size. This phone is nice. But massive.

I have slightly smaller hands but I've adjusted to holding my nexus with one hand in some strange grip that seems to work lol... this adjustment just makes it so much easier for me and I can probably handle a bigger phone in the same way. I'll try with my brother's Note.
I guess the gnex is the perfect size for me, I quickly got used to it and now it feels so normal and everything else is tiny at times I feel like my screen isn't big enough lol
After trying the Note, the GNex is small.
Coming from an iPhone (Which I previously thought was the perfect size), this phone seemed huge at first. After a few days though, the size really grew on me. Now, I can't imagine ever going back to a phone with a smaller screen. I was playing around with my mom's iPhone yesterday, and it felt like a toy!
It's too small
That Note...that felt perfect in my hand...
The phone fits and feels perfect in my hand. Although I think anything bigger than this would be to big for my liking.

Same goes for me too. Every time I pick up my brothers iPhone it feels like a tiny toy to me and I have trouble pressing buttons on the screen since they're so small thanks to the screen.
If you've made it this far continue on with a straight face.

How big does the nexus feel in your hand?

Im thinking of getting it but im wondering how big does it feel? Like compared to a 4.5" screen phone or 4.3" phone?
I know its a 4.65" screen but i know a goof portion of the bottom is used for the keys.
Feels pretty good in hand honestly.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Depends on the size of your hand...
I personally don't have a problem holding it about 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time I feel like I'm going to drop it because I'm walking down the street and trying to do something pretty involved one handed.
How big..? xD
it's normal, it feels good on my hand without cases, but with cases it fells not nice but it stays then much better..
when I use my Samsung jet or ZTE Blade then Galaxy nexus feels pretty big sometimes..
That is a pretty relative question, but mine feels pretty good in my hand. It is not a tiny phone by any means, but that is offset by my case.
It has a kickstand through which I slip a finger to walk around with the phone in my hand instead of a pocket.
It FEELS bigger than my old DX, but feels better at the same time. /shrug
OK so here's my experience with the magical Nexus.
Yes at first, (came from a LG Versa & iPod Touch) it felt and looked big.
But if u saw the presentation, they made the Bezel(side) so thin so it wouldn't feel so big.
And what do u know. It feels natural in the hand and in turn, I could never pick up a device that is smaller then 4.2" in screen size.
Now here is one thing for sure.
It will feel big in your pocket. I wear skinny Jeans and man this thing looks big in my front pocket and forces me to put it in my pocket when standing up. When I sit down it goes in my front pocket.
So that is my experience.
I find it about perfect for my medium sized hands. It's not that much bigger than an I9100, and because of its shape (very slight curve) it feels better in pocket. I wouldn't want to go much bigger however. All things considered it's likely a touch smaller than other 4.65" phones (if there are others that use physical keys as opposed to soft keys).
The first thing I did when I bought mine was do the "pocket test", i.e. how does it feel in the front pocket of my jeans. As I said the very slight curve does make a big difference, it's not a brick in your pocket and I find it feels smaller than my SGSII did.
Feels like a relatively small phone to me compared to the One X and Note I had previously. lol

Feels smaller than the i9100. More comfortable for sure, with the more rounded corners, but I sure as heck can't reach the top of the screen with one hand. That sorta sucks, but i'm not really the kinda person to walk around with it out in my hands.
well the phone is the size of my hand so it feels a bit big, but its lightweight. Its not really a big deal though because I carry a purse. So as long as you don't have tiny hands like me, you should be fine.
The only answers you're going to get are completely subjective. 'Feels good in the hand' statements in reviews are always a little silly because anything like that is completely up to the individual holding the object. It's best to try the device out yourself.

I had a Motorola Droid X before my Gnex and it doesnt feel that much bigger. The screen is awesome though, much more detail obviously and since the screen goes close to the edges, its not really that much bigger of a phone.

S III Durability

Hi folks
I'm considering getting the S III but am not sure about the screen durability as i've heard a lot of mixed reviews. How durable is it? Looking at some break tests on youtube suggests that the screen is a lot more sensitive as compared to other phone. Is that true?
btw, what is a good case for this device ?
Thanks!

I dunno if this counts, but I keep dropping mine and the only damage so far is a little scratching on the corner of the outer plastic bezel when I dropped it once pretty hard on some rough tar. I haven't seen any other blemishes on the case, and so far no scratching at all on the glass. I loved my Nexus One, but the glass on that scratched pretty easy just sitting in my pocket. Not so with the SIII, no scratches at all on the glass in the 3 mo I've had the phone.
I don't have a case for it.

Similar experience...phone dropped from my pocket while sitting, landed on the corner, cracked screen...probably hit the weak spot on the phone, regardless, shouldn't break that easily IMO..
It is not durable at all compared to my previous phones (gs2, hd2) if you drop it there will be serious cosmetic damage. The plastic is extremely soft.

Get an Otter Box, you pay that much for a phone then spend an extra 50 bucks to keep it safe.
Get a case if your gonna pick up the GS3... its a beautiful phone but you need to make sure you can protect it... I dropped my phone 4 times since I got it and thank God I bought a case for it. If I didn't have one, then my screen would have been shattered already

yea that's why i'm hesitant in buying it (3 actually). The issue seems widespread and if it is a case of bigger screen then it is a serious design flaw or maybe a manufacturing flaw. At this point im probably going to put off buying this phone but let's see if things change

It's a phone and it uses glass, it doesn't matter what phone it is if your looking at Youtube and their hitting it with a hammer or dragging a razor over the screen then it's gonna do as expected. It's almost comical that people do these tests considering you spend money on the phone you should be responsible for it and take care of it. Accidents happen and the carriers know this so instead take care of your property, it doesn't matter who made it or what some moron with a hammer says.
all that is fine but generally speaking one does expect some level of durability for a device that costs upwards of $700 dollars, specially if the company is touting the latest and greatest gorilla glass 2 as one of the main features of the phone. Cellphones break when dropped, everyone should know that. But the amount of complaints i've come across regarding the S III and the different ways the screen is getting damaged is quite abnormal to say the least.
Anyway, i'm still debating whether i should pass on this phone or go for it. Anything new coming up in the coming weeks?

You never hear the whole story either when people give these reviews, "I had it in my pocket and the screen cracked" turns into I was drunk and fell down the stairs.
I still have all of my devices in perfect shape and it all comes down to how well someone takes care of their things. If your gonna carry the phone in your pocket with your car keys then its gonna happen, I see it all the time and like you said at $700.00 you should act like it's worth it. You want an honest opinion on the device? It's worth every penny but the one thing that would make me warm and fuzzy about it is if HTC built the body. It still feels solid but theres nothing like a well built frame like you would find on the One S or X. No other device comes close to the functionality and multitasking that this one does and I own 8 myself (different devices not all cells.)

My tab 2 will not fit in my pocket no matter how big the pants. Well maybe if I dig out some of my 90's raver pants from JNCO it would fit. I'm at the point where my Note 2 feels very much the way my SIII used to feel and my Droid DNA just feels like a normal size phone. I also get confused when people say "How can you use that thing??" I'm like "What? It's normal. . . "
Just yesterday I was comparing it to a friends iPhone 4 and the first thing I said when I grabbed the iPhone 4 was "awww it's so cute!!". Later on my friend kept being amazed at the things I could do with my phone. Things like multiwindow, being able to select a part of the screen and copy it, writing with the SPen, writing notes on the back of pictures and a few other things, oddly enough he was much more impressed about the fact that there was a little dot that would follow the stylus around on the screen even though the stylus was not touching the screen.
By the end of the night I ended up selling him my Nexus 7 which I no longer needed because of the Note 2. I already have a Note 10.1 and the Note 2... oh yea and that droid DNA that I hardly use now.
I'm surprised how small every other phone feels after using the GN2 for just a few weeks. Maybe Huawei 6.1in screen will be my next device :cyclops:
http://bgr.com/2012/12/06/huawei-galaxy-note-ii-competitor/
It took a week, tops, for me to feel like all my other "big" phones (HTC One X, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Nexus) were small. The One X feels downright tiny to me, and the S3, which always felt big, now feels like the minimal size I'd be happy with.
I don't feel like the Note II is small, though. It's certainly the ideal size for me right now, 90% of the time, anyways. It does seem a little large in the hand to be using the device while driving, not that I ever do that...
I'm interested to play with a Droid DNA to see how it feels and looks.
How about a 6.3in Galaxy Note 3?

Build quality

I have been an iphone user ever since sprint first got the iphone 4s and prior to that had the HTC evo and evo 3d
Anyway after switching to the iphone I never liked the way android felt in my hand or looked
They all felt like cheap plastic ESP THE SAMSUNG GALAXY'S, 1,2,3 my opinion cheapest feeling premium phone
This really kept me from switching back to the dark side =P
All that being said the lg optimus g just feels amazingly solid and looks amazing... Finally a phone with superior hardware and build quality and battery life now only if we could have JB and a nexus 4 port in my opinion this would be the best phone ever made
We should really start a petition to push sprint to get this damn update to our phones
I, wholeheartedly agree, on the subject of Samsung. I have never liked Samsungs build quality. I could actually sit here and rant on about all of the horrible experiences I have had with the 6+ Samsung devices I owned. Despite that, I have had a number of android phones with an excellent, solid body, and the Optimus G is definetely no exception.

I'm pretty positive they're working on it and honestly the Jelly Bean port over on the General thread is daily driver quality for me (The no-outgoing calls bit is annoying although GrooVe IP is a good workaround if you have Google Voice). This is a time for patience, a petition isn't going to fix anything (they need to bugtest I'm sure considering how bad this LG software is)
Looks like I was right
More on the subject of build quality, I got the LGOG about two weeks ago. So far the radio is strong and and I'm getting LTE here near the Tampa/Brandon area in Florida with pretty decent speeds with ZVB. Near the outskirts on -105 to -110dbm I get 12mb down and 2.5mb up.
Also, The few times I've dropped it there hasn't been a single nick or scratch. Also and very recently I might add, a certain someone got mad at me and threw it across the room and a pretty high velocity for about 6 feet against a wall, tumbling down a computer desk. After I found it lying face face down I thought the worst. To my surprise however, there was not a single scratch or dent or crack. I have to say I've been lucky because I would have thought the glass on glass deal would have done after that. Lol

What are your walls made of, pillows???? I dropped my phone six feet (although on asphalt), and it dented and nicked the silver part of the frame on top and bottom of the phone. But I will say I was surprised not a single scratch on the screen. So I will agree it is one tough son of a *****!!!

Made of standard drywall. Lol.. All that's left is the underwater gatorade-toothpaste-bleach survival test.
