THIS ....is it! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This is the device I've dreamed of the last 10 yrs....and I've run with most all the latest and greatest.
I dumped my only big gripe about the browsers mobile-only page viewing, but the fact is this phone surpasses even my extreme contentment with the Galaxy S2 I've been running on ATT and Sprints Wimax MiFi.
Whoda thunk a carrier could take the device with the highest kudo's in the industry and make it better. A Carrier?
Sure, I'm gonna dump the bloatware and get Villians Rom on here asap as well as overclock and undervolt.
But how does this top the SGS2?
*love the bigger screen (ever since I played with the infuse).
*GPS much more accurate
*browser speed is faster...not by much, but consistantly (slightly) faster.
*text reflows via pinch past the first doubletap.
*International version struuggled at times with MMS transmission. No more.
*Without a doubt camera is quicker, all pics are slightly brighter and dilineation is better.
*Overall auto-brightness is dimmed (was too bright before...has marked effect on battery already and its only on the first cycle!
*not that I care (wink) but twice already I've gotten: "wow, what phone is THAT?!"
So major kudo's to Sprint here for putting out the phone of the year! ...so far (yeah, Iphone5...Nexus Prime...I know).
Never been able to say this before....but this is perfect out of the box. Doesn't NEED root...but all root goodies will be purely gravy.
(Oh, cept for the browser gripe....I DID mention that in another post didnt I?...I'll have to check!

I cant disagree with anything you said. I could root and be happy..but that wont happen. I will still have to try every ROM at least once

yep, one hell of a phone! the only problem i have its sprints network being so bad. it's better on rural areas tha in the cities here. columbia and charleston are very crappy while newberry gets 1Mb. this is all in south carolina btw. its the only reason why i also have a verizon phone. data is far more reliable.

I already said this in another post but I think a big reason why the network is slow is because of Virgin/Boost/Walmart's straight talk(sprints network)_. I switched from TMO from Sprint about 8 months ago and it was definitely better in my location... Eugene, Oregon. I think it may just get worse since those $35-50 unlimited plans are pretty hard to pass up especially when the android phones their getting are slowly getting better every season. We do have the 4g.. but I find it's fine if your in one place.. using while traveling it's inconsistent .. for example I can stream netflix low quality fine on 3g.. but 4g streams it great but if I'm driving it will disconnect occasionally when it switched to 3g when it has to.
..... But yeah other than the overtaxed network this phone is fantastic.

I know this is above and beyond, but my work has me out and about all day, and I need the internet and need a good signal.
I got the MiFI...about 4 months ago ($35mo) and in addition to connecting multiple devices it greatly amplifies the 4G (and 3G actually) whenever the signal gets weak.
I struggled with a 4G signal deep in a building, I switched to the wireless MiFi and I had strong 4G immediately.
I know for most its not a consideration but works well if needed.

People are always talking crap about "sprints network" even though it pushed the industry into 4G technology. I was pushing over 4 MB/s download speeds while my apple fanboy friends where still trying to impress me with their 1200 kb/s 3g speeds on their locked down iphones with battery's going bad and patented special apple screws lol. Sprint pushed this industry into higher speed data traffic, sprint put HTC and Android on the map in partnership for the HTC Evo 4g. Sprint is always getting the best phones to it's customers the fastest it can before other carriers. Sprint has made smartphone history and have excellent service and I commend them for it as a proud android user. ATT or Cingular are monopolistic thugs, Verizon is no better, both are rip offs. Sprint = Freedom. Unlimited baby, that's how we roll. See you when you're at the beach with a rooted android device on the sprint network and wireless tether without a worry in the world how much data you're eating up. Then you'll know what true wireless service means.
---------- Post added at 10:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:12 PM ----------
With that said, I have the epic 4g touch and it's a monster. The only phone Galaxy S2 in the world that will have the original xyenos processor with a 4.52 inch screen, the first released in the USA and the only one with notification lighting. All compliments of Sprint. Job well done, the phone is unmatched and won't be for a long time. Sprint sets the bar once again.

Looking to get rid of fascinate and get an incredible. Questions...

My MAIN concern is reception. How is the reception on the incredible? The galaxy s phones have such a weak antenna that I get lousy reception all the time.
And that's about my only question lol. The reception on this phone is so bad that I've come to hate the phone. I've tried every single rom, kernel, fix, etc. and nothing has helped. Worst phone I've ever owned.
If you are going to trash your fascinate, give it to me instead.
My incredible gets good reception most of the time. Even when its at -104 I can typically hold a call.

I'm more worried about data speeds. I have to wait until I get home to download apps over wifi because my reception is so pathetic.

Where I sit right now in my house with 1 bar of reception and -100dbm I am getting 297 down and 306 up via Speedtest app.
Hmmm....that doesn't seem any better than the fascinate.
Hmm im on my inc right now, have z2 bars, just got 496 down and 382 up

Yeah, and I can see a tower from my back porch. Must not be a VZW tower...
When I have 3-4 bars over at my parents' house I get over 2k down and over 1k up with like a 50 sec ping.

Alright, perfect. That's all I needed to know. I'm right in a verizon 3g area, and even when I get full bars on the fascinate (rarely), I can't get over 1.3mbps. With my previous phone I could get over 2k.

Sprint: 'We're taking the iPhone 4S speed issue seriously'

Wow, media coverage, actual recognition of a serious fcking problem from an executive and a pledge to do something about it. As an E4GT owner this doesn't make me feel like a 2nd class customer at all, not one bit.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-20129291-94/sprint-were-taking-the-iphone-4s-speed-issue-seriously/
My brother is on Sprint and in need of a new phone. Tell me why I had difficulty recommending he get an E4GT over an iPhone 4S? If I told him he should get an E4GT and he ended up with the LOS bs, OS battery drain issues, game app crashes that I have (not to mention that our speeds are just as ****ty ans the iPhone 4s's), I'd feel like an [email protected]
I'm new to Android, never had an iPhone and I generally dislike "iPhone people" and their undeserved product elitism so I'm not going anywhere. Still (and quite sadly), I couldn't wholeheartedly recommend the E4GT.
I had an iPhone 4s it has real battery issues I had to charge twice a day sold it for 680 and bought a epic touch for 3+ bills . And it lasts all day, they are both good phones iPhone OS is very smooth but the screen was tiny, even my gf chose her nexus over it, I'm not a fanboy of either. IPhone has better apps and stability. Android requires a learning curve some just don't want or care for but everyone has a choice no need to be haters

I hope Sprint is just playing dumb and that they really know all there phones are getting crappy speeds on their network. It's the network not the phone.....
Seriously, every mobile website should post tests of Sprints 3G speeds throughout their whole line of phones and really put this info out there already. Maybe we needed the iPhone to get Sprint's ass moving but speeds have been terrible way before the iPhone hit so I hope people don't believe the iPhone ruined the network.

He may be referring to the fact that the signal meter has, historically, been a measure of 2G CDMA signal strength which would have nothing to do with your 3G signal strength.
I don't know if they still do it this way since 3G is used more often than 2G it seems these days...but I know my Evo4G's stock meter was 2G.
Not to mention a clogged up overburdened tower ain't gunna do **** for you, perfect signal or not.

All I'm trying to say is, who cares if it's the iPhone that pushes Sprint to fix the network quicker, as long as we get it fixed.
I understand getting butt hurt because it feels like yea were second class next to Iphone,, but the Iphone has more exposure and if its showing the slow data speed and gets it fixed I don't really care. and really neither should anyone else.
What bugs me the most is they are giving so much attention to the iphones SLOW data connection but none to the ept4g NO data connection

I think people are bothered that sprint cares so much about their iPhone users which will be around 1 million they say, but what about the other 19 million Sprint users who have had slow data speeds on non iPhone devices.
Non iPhone users still outnumber the amount of iPhone users on Sprint. Sure it's great that they will fix their network just for the iLosers but it still makes the rest of us feel like Sprint don't give a hoot. If all of Sprints Android users left, it would certainly out number the amount of iPhone users.
Maybe we all just need to buy an iPhone and keep it as backup so if we have any problems, we just hook the iPhone up on the line, then call Sprint so will actually care about our complaint.

Exactly. Fixing iPhones slow data probably isn't going to do a damn thing for our LOS, and definitely won't have anything to do with E4GT OS battery drain or any other issues we are mostly all plagued with.
At best we might get improved data speeds because of iPhone, while all of our other issues probably get even less attention because of it.

Worth dumping LTE for this?

I've been wanting the Galaxy Nexus since the announcement but never got around to getting it. I ended up getting a GS2 Skyrocket and have fallen in love with LTE.
Do you think it's worth dumping my skyrocket for the GN? What's the current state of ROM development?
I dumped the skyrocket but I don't live in lte market. And I don't load roms. Stock gnex ics > skyrocket touchwiz

If budget permits, I would say yes, go for the GN. But if I were you at a time like this, I would wait for MWC (Mobile World Congress) where Samsung is allegedly announcing the Galaxy S3 and see what they have to offer in that aspect.

Ummmm... Mobile Hot Spot! Verizon has yet to throttle me on 4G... I use atleast 12-15 GB's / month. That is where it pays off to have Verizon LTE and unlimited data...
Lol again, Verizon is not an option for me. I pay close to $100 a month right now for 4 lines + unlimited data on 3 lines. With Verizon, I'd be paying over $200
Honestly HSPA+ speed are good enough for me in a mobile device. I browse, stream a lot and speeds are good enough. Average around 5Mbps is good for me. Sure I will take lte if there is an option, but it's not a big deal. Finally it comes down personal choice, if you are teethering may be lte speeds are good but for normal usage no big deal.

Fair enough, but the only ones I've seen complaining about their Galaxy Nexus are the ones getting the US carrier-Nexuses. On overall GSM owners seems happier.
Which may or may not be relevant to OP, so it's worth getting out there.
---------- Post added at 10:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:29 AM ----------
To OP: I don't have LTE, so I have no idea what I would be dumping, but this is my general take on the Galaxy Nexus (from another thread)
Seriously though: I think this phone is the best phone I've ever had. For those returning it, it probably wasn't.
This phone was hyped like nothing I have ever seen, and lots of people probably bought it on the wrong premises. Some people probably bought this phone thinking this would be the Android Jesus-device who would save the souls of Apple-users en-masse by its presence alone. A device which could slay iStore employees by simply taking it out of your pocket. A gadget so shiny, the sun would feel its competition. Etc.
To those people, this device probably didn't deliver. They probably returned it.
To me though this phone is a godsend. Not only is the HW pretty good, it is also 100% open. It's a device whose openness is unprecedented in other types of phones.
I can compile Android from source and flash on this device. Using open tools which I've also built from source. It's not just something I say that you "can" do. I've built the source and deployed on my phone. No hacking or closed drivers or protocols required. Why? Just because I can. It gives you a feeling of actual ownership which is hard to describe or match.
If I want to run nothing but stock but rooted, I can do that without any need to meddle deeply with the phone. In fact, if all I want is a custom recovery to do nandroid backups, I can do that without flashing or modifying the phone in any way.
How? It's easy. I can boot my phone off a boot-image (and hence recovery-image too) hosted outside the phone. I can boot my phone from code hosted outside it. No hacking required. Absolutely none.
This is what a Nexus device is all about. It's all fully open. It does what you ask it. Even if it is retarded. Even if it is singing the Hello Kitty theme song while in the bootloader. Because the device is open. It's yours. It's yours to do exactly what you want with it.
The openness of this thing is amazing. For me, there is absolutely no other phone I would consider. Others might land at some other choice and that is perfectly fine too.
People returning this phone are probably doing it because they followed internet-hype and didn't research what they were actually buying.

If you think that sounds awesome, LTE is probably worth dumping. If you think "that sounds... like something I dont care about at all", then probably not.
Had the Verizon GN. Was surprised to find that I actually had 4g where I lived. Got ~35mbps down and ~7mbps up. With mild use, was finding it difficult to get the battery to last through the day.
Returned it, bought the unlocked GSM version, popped an at&t similar in, and now my battery lasts all day with almost twice as much use and 30% left at night. Pages load at roughly the same speed. Call quality is better (maybe just where I live, but the Verizon version was always a little "glitchy").
Just my experience with LTE and the nexus.

I have both phones and love both, skyrocket gives me 2 days in one charge easily, gnex only about 10-14 hours with extended battery but love stock ics.
If you already have the skyrocket then stick with it, its a great phone, if you dont have neither, get the Gnex gsm.
For now, LTE is the future. I carry a spare battery if and when needed. Battery technology will always be playing catch up.

[Flamebait?] anyone here hate their S III?

So I've had my phone for a month now and I'm really not impressed. Here's why:
*lags . For having 2x the RAM of my old mytouch 4g and a dual core processor this thing constantly freezes and has large amounts of delay when typing (sometimes it takes a sentence to catch up) and Theres usually 450-1.
2 gb of free memory. My mytouch with a ics ROM is just fine(and I use a 7 month old ROM that was one of the orignal ics roms).
* battery. This thing is a complete pig! I can drain through 80% of a charge in under six hours (once under four). I don't watch movies on it. Just texting and facebook.
*reception and data speeds. I don't know whats up with this thing but my old phone and my roommates s II have perfect signal with the exact same tmobile plan. My old phone will do a speedtest at 4002kbps and my roommates will kiss 5500. My S3? 2300 on a good day. Usually 1500kbps. Both of the other phones in the apartment have 4 or 5 bars, I'm lucky to have two. Even if I get up to three or four bars (standing on the roof) calls are always distorted and often times drop. My phone oftentimes will say I have 4g service but refuses to even try to load a webpage or sign into Skype until I restart it.
I have called tmobile several times (and even went in store) and they say its working as intended. I've NEVER had these types of problems on my old phone, and my old one was abused.
Seriously not happy right now. Just got this phone a month ago today and i so regret it. im not paying $90 a month for 1/4 the service i got out of my old phone for $30. I'm past the "buyers remorse" time. Its not really remorse when the **** doesn't work and you refuse to fix it.
I'm looking at canceling my service and eating the $200 etf fee.
Looking at just getting rid of this curse and going back to my old phone and the $30 plan. (or an iphone. I played with my friends and hers is really snappy and.... RELIABLE.
What a crock of ****.

What a crock of ****.
Tl;Dr I hate my phone, and tmobile refuses to make it work right.

Get an iphone if you're complaining about the Samsung Galaxy S 3 performances which blows any phone out in the market right now with the exception of the Galaxy Note 2 which is almost in par with.

I switched from an iPhone 4s to the SIII and I'm never going back.
Have you tried a custom rom? I wasn't completely happy until I moved to CM10 and from what I have seen of CM10.1 (JB4.2) things are only getting better.

I'm sorry you got stuck with a dud. My SG3 is miles ahead of my Glacier on every count. I would exchange it for another. When you get a fully functional SG3, there won't be a lot to complain about.

Seems like you got a bad device dude. It happens. Chill the ... out.
My battery lasts a good ten hours with heavy use. The thing is fast as hell. Go complain to T-Mobile. ***** and rant to them. Eventually they may replace it.

Are you guys all on the same carrier in regards to reception ? Did you switch carriers ? Are you using a metal case / bumper ? What plan do you have ?
The S3 lasts about ~4 hours of screen on time - it doesn't matter really if that 4 hours occurs over 6 or 18 hours - and GPS and other app settings can drain the battery incredibly quickly on any phone. I'd check out BetterBatteryStats or the like, see if there's something unusual.
You're not going to personally injure anyone here by getting an iPhone. Replace this one if you want or figure out what's wrong. Do what you want, it's not really a big deal - it's your money and what works for you.

We're on the exact same tmobile plan. My roommate has a gel case and. I have an otterbox.
We all have 500 minutes, unlimited texting and 2gb 4g data. I keep the GPS and wifi and nfc off. I also keep the screen at the lowest possible brightness.

When most users say this phone is fast reliable and gets good speeds means something might be wrong with yours. Try rooting If you haven't. Or odin stock again.

My only real issue with it is with Samsung. The whole mutiple carriers / models damages the moding community and forces us to have unstable roms if we want to use anything custom.
This is one reason I like what Google is doing with the nexus devices which are more pure, one device per multiple carriers and have full access and I am waiting till Samsung gets forced to open up.
I've never had lag... Stock or rooted
Battery lasts me 16 hrs a day (which is pretty good when using 4-5 hrs of screen time). How much more do u need if you sleep 5-8 hrs per night.
And data speeds...
The nexus 4 isn't even better than the galaxy nexus IMO... And its def not as good as the sgs3 which did win phone of the year (if that matters).
If u don't like it, get a new phone. Pretty simple

I love my s3 on tmobile. No lag at all.

I gotra say. Coming from a different phone changes your perspective. I had the gnex before this phone for almost a year and this phone in terms of development does not compare at all. Not bashing the phone but there are times when I regret selling that thing to come here. Overall like the stock features but there is some slight lag. Blame Twiz for that.

I like mine. It's a little rough around the edges out of the box, but it can be squared away quite nicely.
Skype does have issues. After it says "signed in" go back to the app icon and open it. Do it a few times and you should get passed the circle spinny thing. Also v3 is horrible. Use 2.9.
I love/hate the phone. There's good and bad.
I actually went from the myTouch4G to the s3 and it was a quantum leap mate.
That wasn't counting until I rooted and flashed my phone with the PacMan ROM.
It works beautifully. I can make the battery get 8 hours of full smashmouth Youtube videos which isn't that bad.
Tips, its most likely the widgets or programs you have loaded. I had to learn how to live through phones like the G1 so I was used to using the kill all apps switch before I turned off my phone.
The s3 doesn't have that problem as much, but if you can remember, it extends battery life to do so. And get JuiceDefender.
It only keeps your network on while your screen is awake.
I love my phone. Just tweak.
It's like getting a Pokemon.
All are the same.
Some have issues.
But in the end, if you feed it enough glitches, you'll beat the League with it.
wow seems like many people here came from the MyTouch 4G huh lol

If something is wrong with his phone, rooting will not fix it. If something is wrong, I'd suggest a hard reset first.
I'm just sayin!
Yup hard reset or exchange phone. Just got this beast and i love it. Barely noticeable lag sometimes, ( in SMS app i have over 25k messages). And battery life is amazing for me even when not in coverage area. Also data speeds are faster than Wi-Fi on cable Internet

I'm curious to how the OP thought the battery life and lag was normal on this new, flagship phone?
After all the videos and testimonials about it on the net, wouldn't it eventually start to nag at the back of your mind that something was likely wrong with your specific phone?
Call T-Mobile and request a new phone.

S3 Service

Thinking of getting rid of my S2 and getting S3 wanted to find out how is the 3G service on S3 in the NY/NJ area . S2 I get Wimax which is ok . I had gps issues with my S2 but got solved after Sprint replaced it .
Any issues with S3 I need to be aware off.

Data connectivity/signal is a very one sided thing. It's 99% tower.
Meaning... no matter what phone you have, you'll likely get the same speeds using the same protocols. With that in mind, you'll not get WiMax of course, so you won't get that speed.
But at least on the S3, you'll be on the LTE technology, which is being actively deployed all over the country, and off of the WiMax, which is no longer being implemented or improved upon, and will be decommissioned in the next couple of years.
But honestly at this point, I would just wait till May to see what they come out with.
The S3 is great and all, but you're at a turning point where if you wait just a little longer, it will be better I think.
Since you're already on the S2 and WiMax is available in your area and LTE isn't, there's no reason to move to another device really...
I cannt wait and sold my phone already . Need a new phone so either s3 or evo lte

I came from an Evo lte. I kinda regret switching to an s3 but don't. Only reason I switched was because of the speaker and call quality is horrible. The rest on the Evo I loved but the call quality made me switch.
So s3 has much better call quality then evo lte

Ive owned both phones. But overall decided the gs3 because of development

Idk if it was my Evo but call quality was horrible on it and speaker was no where near as the gs3. That's the reason I got the s3. Good speaker. Good call quality.

"Thinking about selling" and "sold" are two different things, tell us what REALLY happened or is happening and you'll get a better response.
Now, as to recommendation... This is ALL personal preference... With that... From a flat out "looks" standpoint... I personally dislike the weird color design they've done with the HTC EVO 4G LTE, Samsung's much more sleek and I personally like my device to not stand out like a sore thumb. Samsung's nailed that I think.
Now, from a usability standpoint, I've not had very much time to play around with the 4G LTE, but when I did, it felt very similar to my old 3D, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I personally dislike Sense. There are a few things I like about it, but in the grand scheme I always ended up using a different launcher.
The next point is freedom... HTC locks down their device pretty heavily. So, if you're going to root/unlock it, HTC's got some safeguards in place to prevent that and also a way to track that you have unlocked it. (They are all bypassable, but just more difficult to unlock...) Samsung doesn't lock theirs down as heavily. So that's a huge plus for me as well as many others, because from day one, it's unlocked, rooted, freed from restrictions.
So, if you don't root at all... and you are also content with HTC Sense, then you can go with the 4G LTE, but I've also heard many people that have returned their 4G LTE for an S3, for other issues, such as LTE not working unless you reboot the data services...
Samsung's also a little quicker on the updates for their devices and also don't End Of Life one of their flagship devices inside of a year. (EVO 3D is a great example of that...)
Personally I would recommend the S3, but it's of course all personal preference.
