Final thoughts on the screen - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm a graduate student, and as a result I do a lot of pdf reading on my phone. When I first got the phone, I thought the screen looked amazing....a day later I think amazing doesn't even describe it.
A lot of the reviewers constantly state they are disappointed by the resolution. As a matter of principle, it is disappointing that samsung did not up the resolution....but in reality maybe samsung just realized there was not need to..and more functionality comes from this resolution (in terms of apps) and the trade off was not worth it.
I decided to run a side by side test of my epc touch and my evo 3d. I loaded several stem cell papers in the form of pdfs (us stem cell researchers love put pictures in our pdfs). Here is the breakdown.
PDF zoomed completely out, so that it displays the whole page: Winner, Evo 3d. The text is not blurry, but is slight on the epic touch. No one is going to read at this level of zoom....its too small.
Mid level zoom: Winner is epic touch. Both have real clear text, but the contrast on the touch wins out. One nice thing about the touch is, no matter what your brightness, the text looks great...which is nice. One can turn down the brightness, still have well defined text, and avoid eye fatigue.
100% Zoom: Winner again is epic touch. The 3d may have a better resolution, but I am not seeing the gain here. The contrast on the epic really makes for some percise text. The super amloed + screen really signs.
Amont of text on the screen: Wiiner 3d
Quality and readability of text: Epic touch
Quality of pictures and graphs: detail is everything (if you are like me and looking at pictures of flourescent cells in culture, the smallest detial matter). Winner, by far and wide is the epic touch 4g. Let's just put it this way...the detail on the epic touch screen is preferable over ink and paper.
That is my take on the screen. Honestly I don't know where the reviewers get the idea that the text looks pixelated. It just looks bigger....but in no way is it more pixelated than the other phones on the market.
Oh well, that is everything. I am off now. Being a graduate student has its perks....such as having season tickets to the football games.
CHEER CHEER THE FIGHTSING IRISH OF NOTRE DAME!!!

Thanks for the insight. I was getting a little scared after reading the reviews, even then they weren't that bad.

Excellent review BlueGoldAce, I feel the same way.

I am just bumping this one time.
I feel it is useful for someone debating whether to get this or not (the more people we have the better).
Also, I typed this whole review on my epic touch, using the hp touchpad keyboard. The touchpad keyboard pairs flawlessly with the touch!

Thank you, I feel the resolution gets some negative reviews but i think you really have to be picky to have a problem with it.
I have tv projector that uses 480x800 and eliminating the pixelation comes down to the type of screen you use and the focus. Its called screen door effect, basically if you do it right it can still look nice and it sounds like samsung did a great job.

not being a schmuck.. just thought it was funny.. the misspelling of "detial".. in the context..
I agree with you about the screen as well.. and if people harass me about the screen res.. I'll just say.. "lets do a side by side with yours" ...... the sad fact is I am the only person I know that would even have a clue on the screen res of a cell phone.

The color white...

Has anyone else noticed that the ET4G's screen isn't that great when it comes to the color white?
When compared to my Evo4G,
pictures and video - ET4G wins - main colors are "colors"
websites with white backgrounds, pdfs etc - Evo4G wins
To me it looks like the white just isn't as bright, kind of like how the Evo's black isn't as black as the ET4G's black... if that makes any sense.
Is it just my eyes or my device?
ps I love this thing, not trolling, just trying to figure out if this is just me
Par for the course on SAMOLED screens. On SAMOLED vs. LCD, blacks are better but whites are worse, generally speaking.
I only notice it with my brightness turned down. Looks better at dull brightness (of course)

That is kinda a thing, yes. Though I have seen some very abused (S)AMOLED(+) screens and a couple unlucky new ones where the white isn't white and just sucks. That's what you call a bad screen.
the "O" in SAMOLED+ stands for "organic" and over time these organics do degrade faster than your average LCD. They have a type of compensation built into the circuitry to accommodate for this, but, in the limited amount of time most people have a phone they shouldn't notice it...though there are also bad screens that deteriorate rapidly and some that even burn in.
So, yes, AMOLED technology isn't known for having the whitest whites but they should still be bright white, if not you may either have a bad screen or a fantastic eye....hope for a bad screen cuz you can replace that, but a very good eye for these things may drive you fncking crazy.
samoled screens are like that.... yellowish tint for whites but the blacks are BLACK.
Interesting, thanks for the replys everyone

The whites are fine. I believe your eyes are playing tricks on you. The blacks being so deep give it somewhat a darker tint to the whites, but in truth, it's there.
The whites are good on the SAMOLED+ screens. Just because they a brighter on another screen doesn't mean anything. Personally, super strong white would bug my eyes after a while.
I have a 'Mel Gibson' type "Conspiracy Theory" about this whole issue....
I think that Samsung, though they use exactly the same sourcecode as all the other manufacturers, might simply insert a piece of code that inverts the colors that they want, at a certain time.
For example:
Every other phone on the planet has no problem producing a vibrant "white" color....
Every other phone on the planet has a REAL problem producing a vibrant "black" color.
Samsung basically 'flip-flops" this, and I wonder if it's not just a well-placed piece of "inversion" code....
The results would be incredible blacks, and so-so whites...
Does anyone understand what I'm getting at, and care to comment?
<<This space for rent>>
Sht I thought that I was only one on xda that has yellow tint problem.
Its not just our Epics, tmobile gs2 and nexus prime have same problem.
And no-they are not supposed to be like that!
I looked at epic touch at sprint store and their epic was cool temperature white not like mine which is straight yellowish-orange.
I bought mine on amazon and im on my second return. My second phone was litle better but still orange-yellow compared to one at sprint store or my old Epic 1.
To sum this up:
Whoever has yellow tint on their epic touch or other galaxy s2 variants-they have defective phone. And its gonna get worse because in amoled screens blue colors deteriorate quicker than reast,so if your phone is yellowish now it will be red in a year or two, lol.
Its better to get a phone with bluish tint because overtime it will go away, while yellow will only get worse.
yeah u guys arent kidding... The blacks on this screen are effin black. lol.

What's the contrast ratio of our phones? I did a search but all that was said is that "it's high", didn't give exact numbers.
That being said is there a color calibration app, much like one's for tv's & pc monitors, that can be used on our smartphones?

Opinions and thoughts on the screen?

So I'm wondering if the screen on the phone is actually nice? I've read mixed reviews but I'm just wondering if its exaggerated or if the screen is actually nice. How would current owners of the device rate it? Is it on par with the retina display? Are pixels actually noticeable? Any info would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

I have spent around an hour with it and screen is CRAP compared to iPhone 4. Very very dark even on max brightness and AUTO off. There is no white shade, just grey. If you look closer, you can see individual pixels even they call it HD screen. Very dissapointed, such an amazing design with fresh Android, but terrible screen. Not even SAMLOED+.
iPhone 4 screen is unbeatable.
Really? In a way this wouldn't surprise me, though. My 4 and 4S have always been crisper than the other phones I see. I would've hoped the GN would be better though.
Can you comfortably load a desktop web page and see all the text without zooming?
wow. That sounds absolutely terrible. A nightmare. No white shade, just grey. wow. Just canceled order. Thanks for that.
the screen is brilliant, i love it.
Oh really, huh?
Funny, since usually people complain that AMOLED screens are too ****ing bright.
Crank the brightness up a bit and the GN is a decent screen, certainly better than my NS. Now I also have an iPhone 4s (work made me do it!) and I'd say the colours are a little more realistic on the iPhone. In the end the screen size is of greater benefit to me and fairly soon
Supercurio will have worked his voodoo magic and we will be able to choose whatever colour temperature we want.
Edit... the screen isn't dull in comparison with the iPhone, that's complete crap (sorry). And there are no pixels when zooming in on web pages.

Take iPhone 4 and put next to Samsung(max brightness) and you will see HOW dark is sammy`s display and how "white" is white colour - just terrible. Samsung should have used some really premium display in their flagship superphone instead of this crap. I`m so used to superbright retina screen, looking at sammy`s screen felt like its $50 phone.

It's not really surprising that the iPhone has a "better"screen. It uses a high density IPS panel. IPS is well known for its superior brightness, color accuracy, and viewing angles. There's a reason IPS monitors are so wildly popular in photo/graphic editing fields.
Some will disagree because of their ridiculous iPhone animosity, but they don't really matter.
That said, the GSII screen (the SAMOLED+) is not "junk". Anyone who says otherwise is a fool.

Just google/youtube, quite few. But it doesn`t reflect real life situation because its recorded by camera and it does change colours etc. Go to mobile phone shop, take both and put side by side.
That's funny, I've owned every iPhone iteration except for this latest (4S) and I currently own a Galaxy S II. I took my S II to my friend, who imported a Galaxy Nexus, and is replacing his iPhone 4S (doesn't like it). We cranked the brightness to max on all 3 devices, and then to minimum on all 3.
The Galaxy Nexus had, arguably, the best screen of the bunch. We asked multiple people (5 or 6 of our friends were over) and they all agreed. Watching videos and looking at pictures shows a *WORLD* of difference. The screen on the iPhone is brilliant, but compared to the size and resolution of the Galaxy Nexus...you're kidding yourself if you think it's crap.
Disclaimer: The whites *are* more pure white on the iPhone, and the colors are more true to life; however, that's a common difference betwixt SUPERAMOLED screens and the screen in the iPhone. Some people prefer the higher contrast and color saturation in the AMOLED screens...and I'm starting to agree. After owning every iPhone I used to love them, but now I'm blown away every time I turn on my phone because of the way the colors pop.
Your opinion might be that the screen on the iPhone is better...but to say that the screen on the Galaxy Nexus is crap kind of tells me you've either never seen it in the same conditions as the iPhone or you're expressing your opinion through exaggeration.

Yes I have. I owned an iPhone 4 before this phone. I prefer the blacks and colours on the GN - much deeper blacks, much more vivid colours.
Whites/light greys, however, are a different story. On high brightness the GN wins, but anything lower and yes, they're grainy, bandy and greyey. Very poor, but I believe it's a symtom of Pentile displays unfortunately.
Those blacks though. Those blacks!

Why do I like the screen color of my Evo 4g more than the Epic 4g Touch?

I dont understand why these newer screens just look worse in coloration to me. It seems like all these new phones have a blue or green tint to the screens. I went to look at a Epic 4g touch in the store today because I love the form factor but the screen doesnt look as good to me. Is this fixable with some sort of calibration? Or is the hue always there? I want a new phone but I dont know what to do! I like the screen of my old one more!
What say you XDA experts! Looking forward to your responses!
I think you're 100% right. I remember comparing my old G2x screen to the display unit at the sprint store and being quite turned off by it. It even took me a few weeks to get used to the "bluish" color of the Epic... however.. I do so love that deep black. Wow.
Aagghh! So there's just no way to fix it? Seems like the only neutral screen these days is the 4gs

Check out "Screen Adjuster" by Netman in the market. It let's you adjust the RGB values of the screen, as well as the contrast.
Watching videos on the GS2 is very hard on the eyes if there are a lot of dark scenes... Most of the detail gets lost because of the deep black, even with the brightness turned up to 100%. This app lets me crank up the contrast as well so I can actually see detail in dark scenes.
Essential free app, in my opinion. It can be set to autorun at system startup, or you can run it on demand (that's how I use it).
Any way someone could post comparison screen shots? Would be interested to see how neutral one can get it. Also does using that program cause more battery drain?

Yeah it uses a pentile display much to people's dismay. Quite a few people/reviews have stated the following: 1.) Whites appear like a linen yellow. 2.) Blue tinge on the screen 3.) Pixelation is noticeable on text. While that is all true the screen isn't that bad, passable at least while playing games or watching videos. Is it the BEST screen ever? I would say no.

Pentile on the original SGS/NexusS wasn't nearly what it is on this Galaxy Nexus. Last night I spent about an hour comparing and contrasting between his iPhone4s and my brand new Galaxy Nexus. When it came down to it, the Galaxy Nexus had the same readability as the vaunted Retina display, but with deeper blacks, and generally more vibrant (ermm, oversaturated) colors. Looks great to me, but people have different preferences.
i've had the moto droid, moto atrix, htc thunderbolt, iphone4, and this is by far the nicest screen ive ever had.

Are you just quoting other posts or do you actually have a GN? If so does the screen look yellow, blue, or pixelated to you? If it does I would return it ASAP because it shouldn't. Mine and the ones I've played with in the store do not.
Pentile? What Pentile?
In my experience, the pentile isn't an issue. The screen is (theoretically) gorgeous, however (and maybe I'm an exception), I've seen that only about 1 in 3 GNexi have a screen that truly looks like it's supposed to. I'm on my third GNex, two of the three have had different screen issues, and the third had a great display but a blown earpiece
That being said, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one, just be sure to THOROUGHLY inspect it before you leave the store. I'm going back for my fourth today.

My co-workers device's screen white's looked yellow. I went into the store to mess around w/ the device and did notice the same on those units. There have been others stating there is a blue tinge, which is supposedly a normal thing, as to preserve the blue pixel. The screen has minor pixelation but it's not too noticeable like the Moto devices.
You must have microscope eyes then. I can't see any pixelation holding device from one palm far from my eyes.

I do have very good vision yes.
No pixelation that I can see, and I use a lot of different types of high res screens for work. I'm really not sure how anyone can say they see pixelation on such a high density display. Take a look at the 'unlock' circle on the lock screen. You have to look realllly hard to see the jagidness - and this is a circle drawn with square pixels
Colours are slightly over saturated which makes them pop more, however they are not technically accurate - if you care. Eg. look at a photograph from a SLR camera on the gn vs a high quality computer screen.
The only real issue I see is the artefacts (grey 'dirty' look of white backgrounds) on the 2 or 3 lowest brightness settings. This is slightly annoying because you need to leave auto brightness on to preserve battery. You can however use a custom rom to change the lowest limit of brightness.
Trust me, when you turn it on, you'll think the 'google' logo that comes up is actually a sticker on the screen, and when the startup animation starts you'll fall off your chair

I will say that I can notice some pixelization of text, primarily on colored text (reds, blues, purples, etc. are the worst offenders), although that's not to say it's terribly pixelated, but it is noticeable if you know what you're looking for. Certainly nothing to dismiss the phone for, but to say it's not visible is untrue.
i can see it's pentile (having had a nexus one I know how it looks) but it's not much of a problem, the resolution is high enough. Sure it would be nicer if it was RGB, but it's good enough for me, at least (and I hated my N1's screen)

Agreed. To each their own when it comes to displays! I'm not bashing on the display at all, just stating what I have seen.

I agree. Overall I like the display better than my iphone 4, but it does have flaws, and I think the sharpness of the apple retina is better. Still, the blacks are to die for, and I like a little more punch to my colors since I'm not going to be doing any color-sensitive work on a phone. Plus, the size on the GN is juuuuust right.
Though I have to disagree with the poster that said the opening animation looks incredible. I was actually severely disappointed that they chose such a low res animation to "showcase" the HD super amoled display. It should be in native res, but it obviously isn't. That said, it would probably slow down the boot process considerably if that were the case, so it's just fine the way it is.
PenTile, yes. Excellent quality, also yes.
Unless you are a photographer, the colours shouldn't matter that much to you - white is still pretty white, and black is very black, and everything inbetween is pretty damn good too.
Those complaining about pixelation on the screen...well, to be honest, I can see pixels on my PC monitor, and it's a fancy-shmancy 1080p 120Hz 3D monster. I can see pixels on a Retina display. Pixels are everywhere.
I CAN SEE THE PIXELS D:

Bikrame is ABSOLUTELY right bro, also take it from me, I used to be a DIE HARD HTC fan, however, after countless years and devices later I just got sick and tired of waiting for them (HTC) to get their **** together. One can only take so much disappointment before they lose all hope and walk away. I've owned only the latest and greatest of HTC phones on the market, and it was only a matter of inevitable time before the random reboots, crashes and frozen screens come into play, you just get fed up of having to constantly take out the battery to fix your phone... SAMSUNG definitely gets the everyday needs of real world use. Love my SGS3 !!!
Just take a quick look at the link below if you're still not convinced bro... In the end, the choice is totally yours to make... We here at XDA just try to help and inform each other the way family would. Best if luck though bud.

Super AMOLED HD
You’ve probably heard lots of press regarding this display as it’s been the frontman for Galaxy S phones for quite some time now. One of the best features about these display panels is that their black levels are*unparalleled–that is to say that when displaying black, the screen is practically off. This results in much richer detail in images (it’s black level, not white level that increases this quality). Combined with very high brightness and great viewing angles, the result is excellent contrast ratio which makes Super AMOLED displays perform valiantly in the outdoors. You may also hear people describe Super AMOLED colors being “vibrant” and/or “punchy,” which is also due to this great contrast ratio. There are some drawbacks however to this display tech. Due to the nature of how the colors are delivered, Super AMOLED tend to be blue/greenish in color repdouction, which can be unwanted for those preferring neutral color balance. In addition, although the display consumes little power when displaying black, web browsing–which predominantly uses a white background–saps battery life disproportionately quickly. Finally, the display of the Galaxy S III uses a PenTile grid, which decreases*the*actual number of subpixels used on the display (and thus the pixel density)–this is noticeable at high*magnifications, but for most users will go unnoticed.
Super LCD 2
Super LCD 2 is a great all around screen as well. Although it doesn’t have killer black levels or astounding brightness, it has great white balance and accurate color reproduction as well as a true RGB subpixel layout which renders the finest bit of detail. In Chris Ziegler’s review of the One X, he notes that the Super LCD 2 display “[has]*got a near-perfect 180 degree viewing angle and perhaps the most accurate color reproduction and color temperature available…” and furthermore, “At 720p, it falls well into ‘retina’ territory where the individual pixels become invisible to the naked eye.”ConclusionIf the Galaxy S III’s display was a Super AMOLED HD Plus with an RGB stripe display, this debate would simply be a matter of whether you prefer color accuracy or vibrancy of the display, with which the argument could be made that while important for computers, color accuracy is not [as] important on a phone and thus the Super AMOLED’s colors are more*aesthetically*favorable. However taking the PenTile arrangement into account, the rest of the factors can seem to be a moot point to many buyers, especially when they see images like this:
The truth is, unless you have microscopic vision or are purposely looking for image artifacts, there is no way you are going to notice a difference on the screen.
After all of that, it boils down to a matter of personal preference

I actually do notice the difference though. Samoled hd has deeper blacks and whiter whites than the slCD2. So in the contrast category, Samsung wins imo. Although color reproduction, the slcd 2 had more natural tones.
