[Q] Another Evo bootloop without recovery. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know there are other posts that address a similar problem, but I've started this one because most of the others have had no activity in about two months or more. So, I apologize in advance for bringing up a problem that has been covered before to some extent. In addition, my problem may be somewhat unique.
So, here is a description -- sorry about the length.
1. I rooted my phone --
HTC Evo 4g EVT3
HBoot 2.10
Radio 2.15.00.11.19
Orgiinal OS: Froyo (2.2)
Current OS: Stock Froyo with addition of BusyBox.
-- with Unrevoked3 and got s-off and su.
2. Switched recovery to RA 2.3
3. Flashed MikG 2.5 and decided to go back to stock, but hadn't made an RA nandroid.
4. Used a stock image file I located.
All of the above was successful.
5. Tried to partition my sd card to get sd-ext. Tried RA, but it appeared not to take. I kept getting an error message about not being able to mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p or something like that.
6. Tried to partition the sdcard from Rom Manager Premium.
7. Got a message saying that I had to flash Clockworkmod in order for Rom Manager to do the partitioning (it appears that Rom Manager is merely a GUI for Clockworkmod recoveries).
8. Stupidly, as it turns out, I didn't do due diligence with respect to the compatibiity of my current Rom or whatever and the various versions of CWM nor did I realize that when Rom Manager flashed CWM, it would flash the latest version (5.0.2.2). Sooooo, I pushed the "Ok" button. And that began a cascading series of problems.
9. I went into bootloader but couldn't get to Recovery.
10. Tried to use HBoot to flash a new recovery (renamed "PC36IMG.ZIP" and then another renamed "PC36IMG.IMG"). However, the bootloader never recognized the files. Either it was not scanning the root directory of the sd-card or something else was wrong with the bootloader software.
11. The phone would boot up fine, but I couldn't get to Recovery to make a nandoid and, therefore, wanted to get a new recovery one the phone.
12. Decided to try to flash either from the terminal emulator or adb. But when I tried I got error messages. So, I used Root Explorer to try to find Flash_Image. And there was none as part of the ROM.
13. Found a copy of Flash_Image and transferred it to /data.
14. Tried to flash RA using the same file I had originally flashed, but this time from adb using Flash_Image. Got the message the file was bad.
15. I exited adb and tried to reboot the phone and got into bootloader, but could go no further. I then selected reboot from the HBoot/fastboot menu. And the phone froze at the htc splash screen (which it also does when choosing Recovery from HBoot).
So, now that you're worn out from reading all of that, is my phone bricked or can it be revived? (I don't know if the phone is recognized by my PC when in HBoot USB.)
Thanks for your help in advance.

Holy text wall batman. And you aren't bricked, but go to the development section, and download amon_ra 2.3 recovery [search] then place the file on the root of your sd card and flash it in the bootloader. Your phone probably didn't detect your previous PC36IMG because it most likely was missing something inside, or the recovery img wasn't named recovery.

The only thing I can think to try is an ruu to complete stock and then re-root and reflash recovery

When I tried that before, bootloader showed nothing at all, it just sat there. But all the posts I had read said to name the file PC36IMG.IMG. So, which is it, "PC36IMG.IMG" or "recovery.img"? Thanks.

Where do I find
a) the appropriate RUU file and
b) instuctions on flashing an RUU and
c) What if the bootloader doesn't "see" the file and just sits there like before?

You'll have to run the exe version of RUU from your computer with the phone in fastboot.
I don't have the link handy, but it's in the Dev section.
HEre's all you need to know: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...U2Mi1hNWU0LTRlNjEtYWMyOC1lZmU4ODg1ODc1ODI&ifq
then you can reflash recovery, use Amon Ra, don't use Rom Manager for anything other than fixing permissions.
Also, you may wanna back up your SD Card and format it in Windows. If you have partitions, there is a free program called MiniTool Partition Wizard that will remove the partitions and format your SD Card. Before you copy everything back, just put your ROM on there, get everything back up and running ,then copy your files back to the SD Card

I don't have partitions on my sd card. I was trying to create an sd-ext so I could move my apps there to conserve space (I have a lot of apps). Can MiniTool Partition Wizard do that and, if so, will it do it successfully withut problems?
Also, I know it depends on the RUU I use but, assuming I use the right RUU, will it restore the stock ROM? And do you know if there is a Gingerbread RUU that is not an OTA update?
BTW my phone is supposd to be permanently rooted so that I shouldn't have to reroot provided the RUU doesn't flash the radio also (I used Unrevoked3 to root and then Unrevoked forever to make it permanent.
Finally, you say not to use Rom Manager for anything except fixing permissions. I thought I saw an option in RA 2.3 to do even that? Is that correct and does it work? And, if it does, why did I buy Rom Manager (which a lot of people have recommended)?
Addendum: One thing I notice that I forgot to mention is that I tried at some point in my 15 point prccess in the original post that I tried to flash a new recovery from my sdcard, but for some reason the bootloader either wasn't scanning the card or didn't recognize the file or it was named wrong. All the instructions I've seen, including at the link you provided, say to name the file PC36IMG.zip. Yet, teh roxxorz in his pos above says it should be named Recovery. Even the download page accessed from a link in the RUU tutorial you provided calls the file "PC36IMG". So, now I don't know what it is supposed to be called. And, what do I do if the bootloader won't give me the prompt asking if I want to update?

The partition tool will do everything you need, even create and ext3 partiton, but you wanna use Amon Ra for that.
I forgot to go look, and I will now, for the RUU's for the phones. There's an exe version that you can use to run it from your computer
Here's one, but I'm not sure if this is the pc36img or the exe

I've done a search to and found two links. The first one took me to a page in chinese -- not much help. The second was for what my phone had originally and the file is downloading as we speak.
Now, back to some of my questions:
The instructions in the RUU tutorial used the sd card to flash AmonRA. What if my phone won't recognize the file -- as I mentioned above? And what is the file to be called PC36IMG.zip or Recovery.zip? And does case matter? So, what precisely should the file be called (as it should actually be typed)?
Then, what if when I go to run the exe, it doesn't see the phone (I do have the usb drivers on my computer -- or at least I did, including the one from Unrevoked)?

The should be named PC36IMG.zip. Windows hides file extensions by default, so just name it PC36IMG, not PC36IMG.zip.zip, and yes case matters. The bootloader will see the file because all the contents will be inside the zip file; just place on the root of your sd card, boot into the bootloader, and take it from there. You need to boot into the bootloader, select fastboot usb, then connect to the pc, and last run the exe; if you have all the drivers, you should have no problem.

NO, I saw it when it was half a page big.

Just for good measure, here's the link for Amon Ra that is already named correctly & has the correct components. You can find it here: http://db.tt/WP0beNa
I'll admit that I just scanned over the majority of the posting after the first post, so I'll read that over really quickly and if I can think of anything else I'll edit this post.
Also, does hboot scan and not find the file, or not scan for it at all?

Good question. I really don't know. When I boot into HBoot it just sits there. There are no messages of any kind, just the menu and above it (in red) instructions for using vol-up, vol-down and the power button. And, of course, at the top of the screen is the version information. And that's all it shows. So, I can't tell what it's doing.
The other thing I'm anxious about is that HBoot isn't scanning the card or can't find the file AND HBoot USB won't connect me to the PC. I'm assuming that, if that is the case, I'm dead in the water.

Consider using a different SD card / Perhaps your SD is cooked ?!
So long you get to the bootloader you are fine

My card seemed to work fine with regular apps before this mess. Would the sd card work with regular apps and be "cooked" when it comes to the bootloader?

I just tried the link you provided for the AmonRA using IE8. The link opened a blank page and the dowload never started. Will try Firefox.
Copied the URL to Firefox and it worked. Hopefully the checksums will be correct. Thanks.

Another few questions before I try this.
What will happen if I run the RUU without first running the s-on tool?
What will happen if I run the s-on tool AFTER I run the RUU?
What will happen if I run the RUU without installing Amo_RA before hand (with or wihout having run the s-on tool?
I'm wondering because it's not like I'm returning the unit to Sprint or going to sell it. I just want to get it up and running again and was wondering, in case I can't get AmonRA installed, could I do the RUU, then run Unrevoked again without using the s-on tool. My thinking was along the lines that if I ran unrevoked again, it would also install Clockworkmod 2.6.0.1 recovery from which I switch to AmonRA. Of course there are other assumptions like being able to run the RUU exe. Which reminds me, how can I tell if HBoot USB is working and has made a successful connection with my pc?
Sorry about all the questions, but not asking the pertinent questions is what got me into this mess in the first place and I don't want to screw things up so that nothing at all can be done except replace the innards of the phone or get another one. Thanks to you all for your time and patience.

You don't need to Run S-On. The RUU should keep you rooted. After you run the RUU, then you want to flash the PC36IMG of Amon Ra and you should be all set.

OK. After running the RUU, can I run unrevoked again without running the s-on tool? (So that I have a recovery from which to install RA.)
Now, to repeat a couple of my questions in my last post.
How can I tell if HBoot USB is working and has successfully connected with my PC?
Can my sd card be cooked with respect to the PC36IMG files and yet the files I saved using some of my app appear to be fine?
Just though of another question. When my phone locked up USB debugging was on. So, am I correct in assuming that, even though it is in a bootloop, that HBoot will still see USB debugging as on? And when I go into HBoot USB, should the sd card show up on my PC like in Disk Drive mode when the phone was booted normally (before this problem)?

[Q] What the hell has happened?? - SOLVED

ok, phone was on charge, phone rang, went to answer, phone rebooted!. Left it but it stayed on 02 screen??.. Battery out, reboot - same thing!
Tried going into recovery but again it hangs on the o2 boot screen?
What the hell has happened?????
Was running DeFrost 3.6 with no problems!
Someone please tell me my phone is not kaput!!
First of all, pull off your sdcard.
Tried that - removed sdcard - still same.. o2 boot screen...
Can anyone help me please?? I cant even get into recovery to to a nandroid restore.. everything i try the phone just sits there on the o2 screen... is there a way to reflash an original rom incase i have to send it back???
I just dont undestand why answering the phone on charge i have ended up with a f**cked phone???
So i imagine you can see hboot screen.
You may try to flash a new recovery with unrevoked.
Yes i can see the Hboot screens.. i tried the unrevoked methos but it wont go any further than saying: waiting for device enable usb debugging... as the phone wont startup.
Vicious circle eh.. thanks for quick reply though..

What i was going to say .... if you cant get to the hboot screen well then bad times indeed
Extreme solution
If you can get the Hboot screen, as extreme solution, just copy in your SDcard (root directory)the file PB99IMG.zip or similar (I have no brand phone, maybe O2 requires a different file).
Be carefull, because this method will reset completely your phone. You will loose Root, every data, and you'll come back to the original branded phone.
You can search for this file at:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bravo/
Download the zip file corresponding to your version and rename it in PB99IMG.zip
Put this file in the root directory of your sdcard, start the device in Hboot mode and it should start automatically!
I hope this can help you.
If anyone more expert has a better solution, please help him
No i CAN get into hboot screen.. i just have no idea as to what to do now???

Ok, i will lose root but will i be able to use the unrevoked method again??.. or am i completey screwed then as hboot will be too high etc...
I have put my goldcard in.. but just cant do anything
So...the alternative is to have a not working phone. In any case, Unrevoked or not, you should give it a try if you don't have other solutions. But I suggest you to read a lot of threads before you proceed... many similar experiences could help you to understand the procedure.
Yeah agreed.. would rather a working phone.. I have been looking at the bricked threads but they are not so easy to understand.. Appreciate the help though..

Ok, i am completely stuck now.. I think i can repair the phone but i just have no idea how. I have trawled through bricked threads..just cant find a solution.
I think if i could get usb debugging enabled unrevoked might just work.
Using the cmd tool i can use enableqxdm 0 and it says okay - however unrevoked still does not see it as neither does my pc!
I have no idea how to restore my nandroid without getting into recovery???
I am unsure weather to flash the PB99img.zip as i have a branded phone and i am worried i will completely brick it!
Just so so lost....
Heres a tip though - dont answer your phone when its on charge!!!!

Can i use any of the PB99IMG.zips then as it was an o2 branded phone??? Or can i use the update.zip (is this the nandroid backup??) thats already on my sd card - have card reader so can mess about with that no probs..
I have just seen where it checks for the image afetr getting to Hboot so i understand what its looking for now... Question is what image do i use..
Really do appreciate all the help guys
Ok, i tried flashing one of the pb99img and i get a CID error (incorrect). It says this is because goldcard is not present but it is???? Is it because i am using a different standard rom to the one that was on the phone???
I give up for today - i gotta go to work. If i could get USB debugging to work i would probably be ok, but when i do the commands via cmd prompt it says okay but it doesnt seem to do anything!
My goldcard now seems like it doesnt want to be one, thus the cid error..
I am just going round in circles here..
Think i might just throw the damn thing out of a window - Its doing my head in!!!!!
All from answering the poxy phone whilst plugged in!!!!!
wow.. was hoping for a few replies.. guess no one has any ideas.. guess i am buggered then... ok so if i send the phone back to o2 - what is worse case scenario if they do see its flashed??.. will they just charge me for the fix or just not touch it at all??

I would suggest you put your SD card in your computer and verify the content. Or even better, I hope you have a backup of your SD Card after you rooted your phone. I think your partition may have gone, so you can't boot up anymore. Try to format your sd card, partition it with Gpartition or whatever prog you have and copy back the content of your SD Crad back up on your newly formated SD card. It should do the trick. The same happened to me when I changed my 8gb SD Card for a 16gb one.
Good luck and let me know how it works (or not).
forelli, in Darth Sidious mode.
The sd card seems ok in a card reader? I did do a backup a while back but i have a spare sd card so i will try that? Would the sd card problem stop me going into recovery though??? I thought that was phone based and not sd card based??

[Q]HELP! My Desire got into restarl loop and can't restore

Hi guys,
I've just partitioned my SD CARD through ROM Manager. Partition of 512MB and 0MB of SWAP.
After that I turned on the Desire and Went to the rom manager and tried to Flash a ROM. - this went unsuccesfully because the ROM Manager could see my SD Card.
So, in the ROM MANAGER I pressed the thing that gets you into the recovery mode, and there when i was trying to flash the room, if could see the sd-card again.
I tryied to restore, but it said that it has nothing to restore(first of all i've just backed up before starting, and even before that I had tons of backups).
I gave up the restore and restarted my phone, which also went unsuccesfully.
I've got into a restart loop where the phone turnes up till the opening page, has a little time of black screen, and than again-opening screen.
PLEASE HELP ME. ANYONE???
EDIT: I have just connected the SD CARD to the computer through a card reader, and he is almost empty! It has only 2 folders: .android_secure, .footprints, Android, LOST.DIR
what should I do?!
Maybe some1 can upload here all his SDCARD content and by that i'll copy it into my, and maybe it will work again
EDIT #2: NOW I'CANT ENTER THE RECOVERY MOD AT ALL!!!
it just stuckes on the with screen showing the HTC sign.
A partition will delete the contents of a sd card you should of backed up you nandroid first.... go to recovery mode by holding vol down and pressing the power button while the device is off, and choose recovery from the menu, clear the dalvik cache and see if your device will boot
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
I pressed the"wipe dlavik chache" and nothing happend..
and now i can't enter the recovery mode at all. great.....

Sorry for the ignorance, but what RUU is?, I really didnt get your post
Before rooting it's advised to check the original ROM running on your phone and get a copy of that RUU (ROM Upgrade Utility) so you can always revert back to stock if things go wrong. I assume you don't know what your phone originally came on?
Unfortunately you are write.
So.. is there something for me to do?
check this link with all the official RUUs and download one that is from your region or download the generic World wide english one (WWE)

dude and where is the link?
*During the RUU installation it says to turn on my phone and do several things...
I CANT TURN ON MY PHONE!
Try.
Try reformatting your sd card in windows first?
If you have ubuntu, you could use gparted to format it.
Or use another sd card.
Since you can access your sd card, download clockworkmod and the necessary files needed to root your phone, including a new rom. (I don't know how its like on windows as i use a mac so...)
Start the rooting process again using unrevoked. See if it starts up your phone.
If you can, flash the new rom.
Hopefully everything will work out.
P.S. What rom were you using before this happened and what version of rom manager were you using? Perhaps this might help other people.
First of all, I was using the newest version of ROM Manager and an Israeli ROM based on the LEEDROID.
but it all relays to the past, i got my phone back on track!!!
I found an old folder on my computer which included all my SDCARD content(I rememberd that i've backed up it on the pc once), so i copied everything to the SD, and than it let me into the recovery mod, and i had an old Nandroid backup.
EVERYTHING IS FINE NOW, THANKS EVERYBODY FOR TRYING!

[Q] problems trying to get rid of superuser

I am having troble unrooting an evo 4g. I got to the s-on part, but can't get the phone to recognize the PC36IMG.zip file. I've tried a couple of these ruu files, thinking that most of those might not be working properly. The ultimate goal, really, is to get rid of the superuser permissions. I am trying to sent the phone back to Sprint and am afraid that they might see it. I've tried downloading Terminal Emulator. However, everytime i put rm superuser.apk, the response i get is that it can not be done because it's a read-only file. any suggestions?
if the s lock is on you wont be able to get rid of it. How are you trying to get it to read the PC36IMG.zip because if you have it on the root of your sd card and restart into bootloader it will automatically read the zip and ask to flash it if not just do a clear storage and that should solve it

You need to run ruu now that you're S on. As was noted already, the PC36IMG must be on the main directoryof your SD card. Also, make sure the file isn't named PC36IMG.zip.zip. If you're using windows, then the file extension is hidden, and the .zip is already there, just hidden. Therefore, if you add a .zip, then its really there twice. So using windows, it should just look like PC36IMG. Once its named correctly, and on the main directory of your SD card, the bootloader should detect it and ask you to update.

Copy all of the data on your sdcard to your pc desktop and then reformat the card. Now place the RUU file on the root of the sdcard and if the phone doesnt recognize it in the bootloader menu, then it might mean your sdcard isnt "good" enough. I had the same problem with a class 2 card and i had to buy a whole new sdcard for it to work.
I've checked and made sure that the file name is right. When i put the phone in bootloader it doesn't recognize anything. nothing pop up to ask yes/ no.
Like I said, read my previous post. Format the card and try again. If it doesnt work, then try it with another sdcard.
Also, do you think it would be a problem to send in the phone with superuser on it still?
p.s. i tried to get it out after i re-rooted it and the s was off.
Thank you for the helps.
You can't send the phone in rooted period. Flash that unrevoked s-on utility again to get it back to s-on. Borrow somebodies sdcard and put the RUU file on it. Then flash the RUU in bootloader when the phone recognizes it. I STRONGLY believe that its your sdcard acting funny because it happened to me too.

I agree. If the OP is sure the file is on the main directory of his card, and its named properly, yet it wont read it...then formatting the card would also be my recommendation.

[q] help with hboot

I'm attempting to Unroot my Evo because I've all of a sudden had issues with Data Connectivity while running MIUI.
I've already flashed the unrevoked-s-on tool, and now I'm trying to flash the PC36IMG but my Hboot does not check for it at all?
I'm sure the IMG is on my SD card, any help will be greatly appreciated.

There are a couple things required to be sure that your bootloader will scan and find the PC36IMG. One, the file has to be on the main directory of your sd card. It cannot be in any folders. Two, it has to be named exactly PC36IMG.zip. If you use windows to look at the file, it should appear as just PC36IMG, because windows hides the file extension (.zip), although it's really there. If that's the case, and you happened to add a .zip, it would really be named PC36IMG.zip.zip, which would cause the bootloader to not find it when it scans. So basically, be sure it's named correctly, and it's in the correct location (main directory of the sd card). If those two criteria are met, it should find it, and ask you to update. If it still doesn't scan and find it, you should re download the file, because it could be corrupt.
Also, you need to be sure that you are indeed in the bootloader, and not in fastboot. If you see 'bootloader' as one of the menu options, you aren't in the bootloader, and your in fastboot. If that's the case, select 'bootloader'. Good luck.

[Q] Stock Incredible in BootLoop

A friend was trying to transfer contacts or some nonsense from her incredible 2 to her old incredible and got a boot-loop.
The phone was totally stock.
Now I can get into the bootloader but no matter what i do from there: Bootloop.
can't get into safemode either.
I have only ever softbricked my One X after I had rooted and installed a custom recovery, so i am not sure what to do here.
Should i just RUU? If so can someone provide me with a link to a TUT or a DL. I don't even know what Version of the Stock ROM she had or anything.
(In case you can't tell i know virtually nothing about the incredible)
Cheers

place the .zip on the root of the SD card and make sure it is named "PB31IMG.zip" and the SD is formatted to FAT32 then boot into hboot and go to bootloader and it will scan for the file and when it finds it it will ask you if you want to flash it, you just need to click the vol. up button to update and then it will flash it and then you will need to click vol. up to reboot I believe. if the RUU was successful it should boot into stock HTC android without problem.
thanks but...

As far as I know there is no way to flash things using the internal memory. I could be wrong but this is what I suggest for you:
If hboot couldn't find it then you need to do two things:
1. Make sure your file is called PB31IMG.zip not PB31IMG.zip.zip
2. Format SD to FAT32 File System Format
a. Make a backup of files on SD
b. Format to FAT32 using windows explorer
c. return files to SD card
Also an important note is to check the MD5 sum of the file. The MD5 for the file you downloaded is:
25EC451E08CD98C9495971BCB37E6582
This is important because flashing bad files through hboot can permanently brick the phone.
If you have mini-adbinc on your computer you just need to navigate to the directory of mini-adbinc in Command Prompt and then use the command:
Code:
md5sums C:/Folder/Folder/Folder/PB31IMG.zip
(where Folder/Folder/Folder is the series of folders to the location of PB31IMG.zip)
If you don't have these resources on your computer then there are several MD5 checkers online that can do the work for you and have more of a graphical UI instead of command prompt.

There is a way to put it on the internal drive, but hboot wont look for it there. Did you try backing up the sd to a pc, then format the card fat32, then put the ruu file on the sdcard in no folders. Make sure its named EXACTLY caps and all PB31IMG.zip, it shouldnt need to be renamed though. Boot to hboot, it should find it.
update fail!
so i formated to fat 32.
It recognized the image tired to flash but ultimately said...
Main Version is older!

Try this one:

I am not actually sure that it is different than the one cmlusco gave you but it worked for someone else when I helped them so it can't hurt to try!

Thanks, do i need to extract the files and put each of the .img files on there individually? Or, what do I do with the .zip?
Remember to extract the pb1img. It's inside the zip folder that was really confusing for me a couple years back
