Battery is dying at fast rate

For the past 3 days my battery is dropping at an incredibly fast rate. Even if its idle it will drop about 20 % every half hour with little to no use. I rooted my phone and am now running fresh with kings kernel but no change. I an even dropping in airplane mode. What can it be? I left it at 90% connected to wifi with the sync off and when I woke up 6 hours later it was at 20%. Any solutions?

Sounds like mine, just turning on the screen drops the batter 1-2%.

Hit menu and click on settings. From there, go to About Phone and then to Battery. Note the awake time and turn the screen off for thirty seconds or so. Turn the screen back on and check the awake time again. If it's not within five to ten seconds of the time you noted before you turned the screen off, something is keeping your phone awake, which does a number on the battery.

square parts or system panel might give a better idea of what specifically is draining your battery, or preventing it from sleeping correctly.

It seems fine, about 15 seconds difference. The weird thing is this only started happening about 3 days ago, I rooted yesterday, and its still doing it.

Go for what Fachadick said. Download and install Spare Parts from the Android Market. Go to Battery History and click on the dropdown box where it says "other usage" and click on "partial wake usage". If anything is taking up one of those bars, that's your problem.
If there's nothing notable there, it could be damn near any of your applications. When you root, you lose settings for you apps (depending on how you rooted), so your autosyncs could be going crazy. Might wanna check those.

What he said Rooting won't fix battery issues. Rooting and installing a new ROM is just like reinstalling your OS. It can fix things or not depending on how it is configured. Likewise it won't fix your phone if hardware is bad.
does it drop steadily or just the first 5-10% or so? There is a well documented issue where the trickle charge stops at 100% and then shuts off so the phone actually drains a bit before it kicks in again. When you first unplug it, the reading may drop quickly until it reaches the real level.
Likewise depending on what you have installed and how it is set up, there may be something keeping your phone from sleeping. Check for partial wake use like the previous poster said and that will tell you what process/application is keeping your phone awake and draining battery.

i had this same problem about the battery before i rooted my phone. after i rooted it i got overclock widget and i get through the day with so much more battery left. i make sure my battery is full right before i go to bed, i put it on airplane mode and go to bed wake up around 7 a.m.(my battery is always at 98 when i get up in the morning so 2% in about 8 hrs) and i get home around 8:30 and my battery is at 48%. and no i dont leave it lying around with the screen off. i constantly go on, text, internet etc.

I am having this same problem and it started about 2 days ago. I downloaded Spare parts and looked up the partial usage (screenshots attached). I'm not sure what I'm suppose to determine from this. Mail is showing with more fill-in than any other program, when I click on it, I get the details. Can someone help?

It doesn't appear (to me anyway) that you're having any issues with partial wake time. You may have a runaway app draining your battery and cpu - system panel is invaluable for hunting those down. It will show you each running process with exacly how much cpu it's used. It gets even better and gives evenmore detail if you let it monitor your system over time.

There I go, letting my prejudices get ahead of me again, sorry about that. I think in the market it’s called systempanel – one word.

So will the free version pinpoint the problem, or would I need to do the paid version?

to be honest, I'm not sure - I don't remember what kind of detail it gives you in the free version, but the app is so useful to monitor cpu and battery, as well as for hunting down rougue apps, I would recommend the paid version as a "required" app for all rooters.
when you load it up, the default screen is essentially a taskkiller - but more importantly, you can go into settings and have it show ALL processes, and if you select one of the apps or processes from that main screen, it tells you when it was started, how much cpu it used, how much memory its used, and at least in the paid version, a historical graph of cpu usage - so you can see exactly when it used the cpu over the past 2 hours, 8 hours, 1 day, 3 days, or over the past week.

Me Too - "Android System" extremely high - Stock 2.2
This is also happening to me from 4 days ago. I haven't installed any new apps in the last 15 days or so, and for good measure, i uninstalled the last 10 apps i installed before that. When i check battery usage, the "Android System" takes up between 60 and 70 percent. When i open it, it lists like this:

Bluetooth is off, 4g is off (when's cincinnati going live already!??! Just the heart of downtown and the mall)
Wifi is off, and I've been turning off gps now, but i always used to leave it on and made it through the day.
"Cell Standby" is next with 8%, everything else below that.
I kill everything with task manager now and it doesn't seem to help at all.
It is not possible to exaggerate how fast the battery is being drained. It drops by 1-2% each 45 seconds or so. I've done the Charge-for-8-hours-turn-off-charge-trickle-charge-unplug-trickle-charge-unplug-etc thing last night and no help. This is with no widgets installed, no live wallpaper, no music, when for months i can make it through the day with a little pandora, bluetooth while driving, a game or two, internet, maps, and several other apps throughout the day. I've stopped everything but messaging and phone calls and it still drains just as fast.
PLEASE HELP!

I don't know if this applies to anyone in this thread, but after installing a new rom sometimes I forget that the Gtalk/Gchat app resets itself to automatically sign in, and drains the battery while running in the background.
Changing it to not run automatically helps out for me, although I feel that I may have gotten slightly better battery life out of the rooted stock rom than running the King kernel I'm using right now. At least in terms of percentage drop. I never really reset my battery stats or recalibrate after installing a new rom, don't know how much that has an effect on the readings.

Its not latitude, off. Not ANYTHING as it still happens with everything off and all apps killed in task manager.
No background, no live wallpaper (even though i used to have one all day). No music (even though i used to have pandora on a couple hours a day). screen brightness is always low (even though i used to leave it above medium, and would turn it up to high to watch video or a game, and still made it most of the day before).
The phone's battery use thing swears its "Android System" thats taking by far the most, not even cell standby got larger when i unplugged it in the basement where there's no service.
i've turned off everything i could think of, no apps 'auto update' and i've put all syncing and updating and stuff to manual or off that i could find.
I don't think its a faulty battery because it is ridiculously noticeable that something has changed in that ANDROID SYSTEM is now a power hog. Why and what do to?????

Have you pulled the battery lately? Give that a shot.

Stock ICS - post-update issues, swype, battery, SU

I waited a LONG time for the stock ICS to be released. Three days ago, I finally had enough, updated to AOKP - so of course the very next day saw an Engadget article saying the ICS OTA update would be over the next few days. Since I was disappointed the AOKP doesn't offer the same Exchange account sync schedule options as stock (important to me due to my work), I flashed back to stock, rooted, no CWM, just stock recovery, and planned to wait out the stock ICS update.
Last night, I flashed the stock ICS update via QBKING77's link in the video:

I went to bed without playing with it much, it was late.
I woke up this morning, sent a few text messages and played with trying to get swype to work - in 20 minutes, used up 6% of my battery! 20 minutes later, not using my phone (I was on my computer searching here) another 5% of my battery used. In less than an hour, I was at 85%.
Looking at the Battery chart, I see my "mobile network signal" is staccato, interrupted black and green, green only 50-60% of the time. Not sure if this is contributing.
I have BetterBatteryStats installed. I work with little kids Saturday morning, then have a date, so I'll have quite a bit of time with my phone where it should be sleeping, so I should be able to build some stats - but any help is appreciated, I'm going to have to carry an extra battery with me at this rate.
I also can't get Swype working. I've seen comments like this:

How is this supposed to be done?
I recalled the dictionary comment when reading last night, so cleared the dictionary from the Settings --> Language and Input --> Swype settings. That didn't resolve it. I'm noticing that many of the settings in this category are entirely unresponsive as well.
If I go into Swype from Settings--> Applications, the Clear Data button is greyed out.
Force Stop doesn't enable the button, Disable doesn't enable the button.
It also just continuously shows "computing" for the space stats.

And I've lost 4% more as I've been typing this on my PC - phone not even on.
Another odd effect - I was rooted before updating (but again, no CWM, just stock recovery, rooted kernel), but of course am not rooted now. However, when I move around the phone, accessing certain things, I'm noticing the permissions popup box appears "[application] has been granted superuser access". Is this contributing? Should I uninstall superuser app? I just figured I would wait a day or two until a rooted FF18 kernel was available and then I'd be back as I was, rooted.
Any thoughts on these? I can't believe Samsung or Sprint would have released it this way... maybe others aren't experiencing these? I'm not seeing many threads with people complaining about them, and most people seem to be able to fix Swype like it's a simple fix - clear data, no prob.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I know I've seen it, but can't find it at the moment, but did you pull your sd card out when trying to clear data to avoid the computing issue?
And I know I saw a thread with a fix for it but is driving me crazy that I can't find it. :banghead:

Other than that, I'm unsure.
Mine works fine! settings all set to battery friendly. Auto brightness off set to low, no haptic or vibrating ever, no touchkey lights, etc.

Awesome, that actually worked, for the Swype issue - it stopped "computing", and when it did the "clear data" button appeared.
I'll leave my SD card out for now (about 45 gig of music on it is all that's on there), we'll see if anything else changes or smooths out.
Sounds like it shouldn't be a problem when I put the SD card back in, either (fingers crossed)

This seems more extreme than that.
I'll bring an extra battery with the car, if I run completely out we'll see what happens - but I'm wondering now if I swap the fully charged battery in, if that'll throw off the battery stats too. I never understood those battery stats.

I just tried to do a Better Battery Stats dump to file, but the file it produced is empty.
I thought it was going to be too big if anything, I checked all the boxes in "dumpfile settings".

I also had swype problems. It said failed to load english or something similar.

Well - it's about 7:30, I've had somewhat average use of my phone today, but I hit power saving mode (30% battery remaining) at 7pm, which is about 3-4 hours sooner than I usually do - and it's actually worse than that because I didn't unplug my phone from the charger this morning until about 11am - so that's about 2-3 hours later than I usually do.
Means I'm getting something like 6-7 less hours of battery life on this ROM.
I tried to generate a Better Battery Stats dumpfile but it looks like the text file was blank - anyone know how to do this?

I kinda expected this outta the 1st OTA to ICS... the few ICS ROMs I've used before this never gave me as good of battery life as stock GB did... I'm still on GB and I can get a full 18-20 hours out of it with what I consider to be pretty mod-heavy usage... Even though I expected it, it's till a let down .. unfortunately it prolly won't get much better until the Devs get a hold of it and tweak it out.. This whole crappy update situation is really turning me off android in general..

One thing I'm suspicious of is the new Sprint ID switcher thing. ..
The good: Open it. Switch from "Samsung" ID pack to "My ID" pack. Bam. Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich launcher, no TouchWiz.
The bad: Download "Home Manager" app from Play market. Switch your ID's, and back. Observe both "Launcher" and "TWLauncher" are running. ...and if you had a third party launcher like I do (Go Launcher EX), you probably ALSO see that one "running", if you were using it.
You can use this app to kill the others, but it seems temporary. Having 2-3 launchers simultaneously seems like that could use a little more battery to me - and this is a built-in Samsung feature now.

Ics update battery fix
I found a way to greatly improve battery life after the update. Hold in the home button and a recent apps menu will pop up. Swipe apps to clear and android os battery consumption will drop to less that 35% mine was running at like 75% before i figured this out.

Correction its at 13% now. Much better than 75. Hope this helps

[Q] Android OS Battery Drain

In the last few days, I have noticed that the process "Android OS" has been using maximum battery life (about 16-35%) and has also been consuming large amounts of data.
The only thing I have done recently is allow the facebook app to upload all pics from my mobile.
Any connection? FYI, I have not added a Samsung account.
Apologies if this has been answered earlier by I did search for it.

what version of android are you running?
what ROM? what kernel?
how long ago did you start to notice this?
is it a constant issue, or does it fix itself after a reboot or something, or with data connection turned off?
do you use google now?
if you are on the jelly bean 4.1.1 version, did you update OTA or odin? just curious, probably not related anyways...
what recovery are you using?
just trying to get some info before i help. many things in the android OS can be directly or indirectly related to each other but still have a side effect on battery life.

16-30% in general has been relatively normal on JB. (Usually between 14-18% is where it settles to)
Keep in mind that unless you are at least halfway through your batt cycle its going to be higher. If you're at 90-95% batt it can be much higher, just due to percentages and battstats being reset.
Not sure why you didn't find anything though, this has been covered a great many times in the past 6 weeks! Did you look at what the top processes are under Android System?

I had installed root66 prerooted JB rom. When I noticed the problem, I installed stock ICS through odin, updated to stock JB then rooted again but the problem continues.
I have been noticing this for about a couple of weeks. Restarting doesnt help but I havent yet tried turning off data. Will try that and let you know.
Yes I use google now.

Is this something peculiar to JB? I didnt see this in ICS. The top processes currently showing in the battery stats are Android OS: 28%, Voice calls: 17%, Screen: 11%, android system: 8%...
Is there anyway to check exactly which app is using the battery and data which is showing as Android OS?

Odd... mine is usually only around 10%

Mine generally sits between 11-14% depending on use. But it can show 30+ if you check it at certain times.
For example, if you've fully charged the battstats will have reset. If you reboot the phone it will kick off the media scanner which can run for a while (this can also be the cause of it heating up for a short time). So once its complete it will have used a rather sizable chunk of the overall battery use. Since it usually doesn't run again, the percentage will steadily drop as other processes use the battery.
I know we aren't really discussing the media scanner, but I use it as an example that is pretty easy to see if you watch it.
Android system has a lot of processes which are listed under its category so depending on how each person uses their device it can vary a bit. Most screenshots of 'normal' reports that I've seen usually are around 14-18%. For me its lower, but I'm pretty sure I don't use mine the same way others do. There are times though where it can go higher for me, depending on what kinds of stuff I'm messing with or testing out.
I believe transferring large amounts of data over mtp is one thing that can cause it to go up...

my phone just started this last night. i took it off the charger around 11 last night (100% charged) and it woke me up at 3:30 with a low battery indicator, i checked task manager and nothing was open battery stats showed that android os was at i think 38%. i put it on the charger this morning at around 9 am because it had died fully. it's now 1 pm and it's at 95% charged, typically it takes only a couple hours to charge. my phone is fully stock running jb.

What kernel/ROM and version of recovery are you using?

You can track data consumption of Android system apps via Droidstats
You'll be able to know wether it's Google Maps or any other service that uses data

I am fairly confident I've tracked it down to the touch sounds. Sounds dumb I know, but I believe they are wake locking excessively. I have much better results with ANDROID OS drain with them turned off. Interested to see if others do too.

Looks like you haven't used the tab (screen time) that much over the two days, making Android OS seem overtly guilty.
Try disabling touch sounds -- settings-sounds- touch sounds
Then let us know. I am convinced that is the culprit of the wake locks, keeping the Android OS (kernel & drivers) high and eating battery.

Sorry, forgot to mention it. I have them disabled since i own this tablet (and I checked it again).
I wanted to try DroidStats, but it seems to be an app for calls, sms and data

Yesterday a friend of mine showed me the battery stats on his Galaxy S2 and had almost 40% "Android OS".... but he has never had better battery life. I start to think that (because of the percentage system) the built in battery tools are almost useless
Is 4 days a normal standby time for the Nexus 10? That would be very bad in my opinion.

I've just started seeing the same thing with my Galaxy S3 (Samsung issued ICS, rooted). Normally the battery will last around 24 hours with light use, but currently it's draining from full to warning level in about 4 hours with the screen mostly off (wi-fi, bluetooth and GPS are off at the moment). Touch sounds have been set to off from day one.
Yesterday, the culprit looked to be Beautiful Widgets (around 38%) so I turned some of that off (weather update animations, etc) but I'm still getting the same drain speed - now showing Android OS 26%, Cell standby 22%, Android System 15%, Screen 11%. Not sure if I trust the results though, the BW issue from yesterday could have been a red-herring.

i have this problem with my galaxy grand phone ,the battery discharges in 20hr , default OS was 4.1.2 official samsung , i changed my rom into a slim custom rom based 4.2.2 , but the battery has same problem again , Android OS battery Usage Was 80% !!!! and screen usage just was 9% !

first go to Settings -> Developer Options -> Apps Tab -> checked Don't keep activities
set brightness to auto
then go to location services -> off access my location
then go to wifi -> advanced Wi-Fi -> keep wi-fi on during sleep -> change to Never
now go to application manager -> Running Tab -> Force stop some apps with extra ram usage like settings
my phone just uses 5% battery in 13hr sleep mode ; ENJOY!

[Q] Battery sleuthing - your input is requested

Hello,
I was wondering if you guys would be kind enough to help me figure out what has been going on with my battery lately.. First up, here is all the relevant info:
Phone: Galaxy Nexus GT-i9250 GSM
Network: T-Mobile USA
ROM: Paranoid Android 2.54 - this is based on 4.1.2 - NOT the latest 4.2.1
Kernel: Franco Kernel Milestone 6 <-- My battery issues only started after I switched to this kernel. I had to ditch the stock kernel than came with PA because it was slow as molasses.
Here is the battery drain that shows 43% of total battery was drained in 6 hours

Here are some more details that show how much time the phone was awake:
Partial wakelocks are shown here using BetterBatteryStats. I don't know what AudioOut_2 is but it's sucking down battery. Exchange is another battery hog evidently.. I don't understand why Google Plus is running, I NEVER open the program.

Here are the alarms that show which app is waking up the device how many times. LightFlow and Exchange seem to do this a lot. I have no idea why maps keeps waking my phone, I haven't opened Maps once or changed locations but the location service is relentless.
Here is CPU Spy showing that Deep Sleep is definitely working:
Please can anyone help me figure out why my battery drain is so out of control? I forgot to screenshot screen on time but it was less than 30 minutes. You can sort of see this from the graph on image #2.

it seems like your signal is fairly bad most of the time, that will drain your battery pretty bad since the device will try to seek better signal.
also, i would suggest you to upgrade to latest PA along with latest franco r361, I see a significant battery improvement after the upgrade.

light flow is keeping your phone awake as well.

Thanks. Yes the signal is not great at my office, but it hasn't changed in the last few months. What has changed however, is how drastically my battery is now dying, this is recent.
I would update to the the new PA with 4.2.1 but there are a few things I'm not ready to give up yet like the old toggles etc. Once the new PA builds some of those older features back in, I'll be upgrading for sure.

Yes it is, I don't know why it wakes up my phone so much. I tried checking the "reduce phone wakes" option, but that seems to miss notifications all the time.
Overall, even with not so great signal and light flow running, this battery drain just seems WAY too much, would you agree?

what is your screen on time?
and light flow has been known to kill battery. id honestly remove it.

Screen time was less than 30 mins

How often do you charge the battery? Do you plug it in all the time? Do you run it dead all the time? Your battery may be getting shot out, happened to my wife's to the point it would not take a charge. New battery fixed it. Buy a battery of eBay for ten bucks. Worse comes to worse you have a backup battery if that wasn't the problem. Audio out only took 3.5% and most of the time was deep sleep. I think your battery is dying

I charge it at least once a day - every night. Sometimes I'll plug it in during the day if I know I'm going out in the evening just so it'll be topped off when I go out. But I thought charging these batteries a lot didn't affect their ability to hold a charge?
I'll definitely buy a new battery either way, hopefully that's what it is.
In case anyone else has any other insight, please do share in the meantime.

For Maps wakeups. Try disabling auto location update if its not already. Open Maps > Settings > Location update (something like that)

Cheers. I do already have everything turned off, screenshot attached.
Could it be Google Now that's causing these location updates? It always knows how far away Home is when I'm away from Home.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that Google Now could be a major culprit in draining battery. I'm going to try disabling it entirely to test. Do you have any experience with that by any chance? On how it affects battery?

Screenshot tells me its still on. Top of the menu, Location Reporting: Your location is updated Automatically

I use Google now and easily get 3 to 4 hrs of screen time

You're right, I set it to "do not update your location". What does this do exactly? Looks promising though.

Massive drain battery

Hi,
I have huge problem which hasn't occurred for the first time. I left my t520 with 92% and fell asleep. When I woke up it was at 40%. I had wifi off, and turned off wifi scanning when eve n off (which caused drain esrlier). According to wake lock detector the process which keeps running can be seen under. Please help me. In settings it only says that android process (97% usage of battery) has used CPU for 10h42mi and stood awake for 7h45min

P.s. This tab is complete rubbish....

i would suggest go into settings....->battery. this should show u what is using your battery the most. if its a app delete it and see if it works. if not i would recomend doing a factory reset. this is what i do when something eats my battery alot.

Are you using Songza? It has big problems right now with battery drain. The deal is, is probably not the device. There is an app that is causing your issue.

The tab yesterday got from 30% to complete 0% with everything off (aeroplane mode, sync off etc.) just laying on the desk.
In settings its shows that battery is drained only by Android process.
I was thinking about what might be the cause and just realised that it started to happen just affter purchase of original samsung case for this tab. Is it possible that it had impact on one of the processes? Cause CPU is active almost all the time despite neither app running in the background... Maybe it's due to the magnetic thingy which wakes the screen?

If the magnet is turning the tablet on, the screen would be on, and you can see that even with the cover of the case closed. So if you can see the screen if off, then I would say no, the magnet is not causing your drain problem.
Do you have Skype installed? This is a known battery drain problem on Kitkat as well. Its a bug within Kitkat itself, so maybe that is why its being reported as the Android process, and not one of your apps.

I don't think it's an app problem. I have only few apps installed (news reader, 2 games, fb and few random apps. I'll upload the screenshot when I'll be at home

Yep, my battery has started playing up. It likes to say it's 21% but then goes to 15, then between 2 and 4 within a couple of minutes. Sometimes runs on 1% for ages. But then dies, I turn it back on and it says 21%
Don't know if is root related. Our if I just need a hard reset. Going to try draining battery fully, then charging to full with device off

I also have never seen such a huge battery drain on any samsung or android device. For once, if you dont need it, go into settings and location services. Just disable it completly with that switch. This reduces the drain a lot, but is still way to high...
For me, it drains about 20% overnight with location on (completly offline) and about 10% without location services.

I have the same problem as well. It will continuously drain from 90-50 in minutes and then 50-15 and so on. 1% sometimes lasts for 30 minutes+ and when I restart it will be 15+% again. I thought it might be because of custom roms so I reset it back to stock many times and same problem. The only apps I have installed are adobe reader and es file manager.

boy, you're digging out a two year old thread!!
if you have such a battery drain you have different (unsatisfying) choices:
1. try battery calibration or other roms
2. throw you tab away + buy a new one
3. buy a new battery
4. accept it (like me)
5. wait until someone brings an awesome new rom which will give an awesome battery life
(sorry for hidden sarcasm but this tablet is just a big disappointment (for me))

I don't think you should throw away devices or buy new batteries without first analyzing what the problem could be. If you are rooted, download an app such as Wakelock Detector and BetterBatteryStats first, make sure there isn't some rogue app or process that is constantly running in the background. Also, if you are running the 8.4 (or perhaps it also works with the 10.1 / 12.1), check out the link in my signature on how to reseat your battery. Many people have found success with all kinds of battery problems.
