[Q] Do I need to unroot before updating or can I just update? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought my At&T Play this summer off ebay (probably a model handed out at a developers conference). It came rooted already, been using it fine. After hearing about the new update for HD video recording I went to update and realized I hadn't updated from 2.3.2.
Now, I know updating will unroot the device but I am pretty sure I don't use any of the rooted-features. Do I need to unroot before updating the device or can I just go ahead and update? I just want to avoid any issues from updating a rooted device.

make sure the bootloader is LOCKED! If you deleted any SYSTEM APPS you would NOT be able to update!

If the ota update is available for you then you can update and keep root but as Cat_On_Droid has said if you have uninstalled anything off the phone then ota updating will not work.
You will have to reflash to stock (2.3.2) > root > ota to be rooted on the latest fw. It all depends though if your provider has relased the new update for ota. Im not sure what the developers At&T device is running, maybe world generic?
If you update using pc companion or anything other than ota it will wipe your phone so no need to unroot when updating. I have used pc companion and seus to update before with a rooted phone and it just wipes the phone and reinstalls whats missing when it updates.
As Cat_On_Droid has also said make sure your bootloader is locked. If you update normally using PC companion, SEUS or ota with an unlocked bootloader it will brick your phone.

[Q] Is there OTA update to newest 4.0.A[...] firmware?

Like in my question. Is there OTA update for UK generic or I'll just have to wait till it's released? My 2.3.3 phone is rooted and I don't want to lose it when updating via SEUS.
I'm on UK generic and no ota update for me yet
I flashed back to 2.3.2 and only get the first update not the 4.0 fw
Only a matter of time though I guess
Got it in Canada yesterday
Just got it for UK generic. Downloading it as I type.
Me too, patiently waits for the OTA update here, good thing they already released it yesterday.. I'm using UK generic too. TS, the availability of the OTA update depends on your place.
can someone confirm OTA update is available for the uk ?, i updated via pc companion and lost root but so I am waiting for OTA to become available
cheers
does root work if you OTA from 2.3.2 to the 2.3.3 (xloud frimware) ?

Yes i received the xloud update (4.0.a) last night over ota and root is still kept. Uk r800i.
If you flash 2.3.2 again then root and ota it will update you to the xloud firmware with root.
1 question do i have to unfreeze all bloatware before i can perform OTA for the new firmware 4.0?
Thanks
Yes you do or else the update will think you have uninstalled them. Just make a list of what you have frozen. Unfreeze > ota to 4.0.a then refreeze whats on your list plus a few other new things.
I just received the upgrade via OTA i guess is to 4.0 since i already have 2.3.3 and the size is 78 mb. I downloaded it correctly, it try to update but after 3 reboots (normal reboots the phone does it itself) it says that could not update, does anyone nows why? I have a rooted Xperia Play and it isnt unlocked.
PD. Everything seems okay it didnt mess up anything, just didnt update correctly.

Can't update to 2.3.3 Arc, bootloader unlocked

I got my new Xperia Arc today, ive rooted it and unlocked the bootloader but now whenever i try and update it bricks the phone.
Im on 2.3.2 and the irst thing I did was unlock the bootloader via fastboot, then used gingerbreak to root the phone, i then tried an ota update which bricked the phone.
I used Flashtool FOTAUnbrick, this got the phone working again, so I tried again, I flashed the generic UK 2.3.2 which worked fine, re-rooted and tried an OTA Update again and rebricked do used the FOTAUnlock again, working again, tried the PC Companion which said there was modified software and that it couldn't update.
So its not possible for me to use the phone companion and its not possible or me to use the OTA how do I get my phone onto 2.3.3 as the 2 official ways i've tried are bricking my phone
Any idea
Well there is a topic about this problem in the development forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126358
The idea is that when you unlock the bootloader you can't use OTA updates or pc companion updates to update your phone because you will brick it. In fact it should not even be possible to get the OTA update but this is bug at SE.
If you want to get the update there is 2 possibilities. First is to relock the bootloader and update either through OTA or through PC companion. Second is to just flash generic or rooted official image using fastboot. Here is the latest official firmware for the second method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202441
So even though the thread says its for the neo this is actually for arc, right well ill give it a flash now see what the end damage is
Sorry this is for Neo. I gave a link for Neo by mistake because i have Neo. You should use one for Arc.

R800i_3.0.1.A.0.145 Updating through OTA will it brick ?

Hey guys
I was having the battery drain issue mentioned by siddharthsai R800i 4.0.A.2.368 as i used the pc companion update method
i've now downgraded to
R800i_3.0.1.A.0.145 (OLD firmware) using flashtool
My plan is now to OTA from R800i_3.0.1.A.0.145 to a newer firmware
siddharthsai said the battery drain issue is not evident through OTA only through pc companion.
I brought the r800i unbranded, it has a unlocked bootloader already from the factory, i've never ROOTED or touched the BOOTLOADER !
will i be able to OTA to newer firmware, I'm worried by using flashtool to flash firmwares will the OTA brick my phone because of this.
thanks in advance
harlzden
Afaik there's no plays that comes bootloader unlocked from factory, it would conflict with warranty. SE says unlocking might void the warranty, but to send out devices that might not fall under warranty would be very odd.
I don't think the newest FW is available through OTA yet (2.3.4).
You should be good to go with an OTA update if you bought it from new (not used) and never unlocked the bootlader. A rooted phone won't brick updating OTA nor will it any other way of updating (Pc Companion/SEUS/flashtool). Rooting and then removing/freezing/modding bloat/system aps can cause it not to be able to update OTA.
Regards Dousan...
I did exactly what you are asking and my phone is working like a charm, while you're at it,root your phone with gingerbreak(that's why I did this).
Btw your issue might be fixed since OTA and PC Companion updates are a little bit diffrent,so might be that SE overlooked a bug

[Q] Update option gone from settings...

HI ALL!!! I have been using XDA for years and have always had my questions answered without even have to post one....BUT, I recently bought a xperia play that was flashed to cricket. And I seen there was a new ota update but in my settings/about phone/ there is no update option which i think is very strange. Now I have root if that will help anyone and I'm currently on 2.3.3 & my bootloader is unlocked.
What can i do to be able to update my play? And is it even worth the update?
Thanks alot!!!
It is very good that there is no OTA update option for you. With an unlocked bootloader, you will brick your device with OTA updates ;-).
Don't know how you get updates, you will have to ask a pro - look around in the forum, but not via OTA
// it's not that strange that the option is gone - as you already said, your play is flashed and played with. The owner before you will have deleted the system app for OTA updates.
i just seen--- my bootloader is locked, sorry. But Yeah i got the phone already flashed. but from what i've been seeing, maybe the ota update is not all that good anyway.

[Q] OTA not available on rooted device.

My wife and I both have a SM-T900, mine is rooted hers is stock. Today she received the OTA update but I get a message that my device is modified and the update is not available. I then connect my device to my PC using Kies 3 and it tells me that a update is available. My question is can I go ahead and update my rooted device, will it screw anything up, will I still have rooted afterwards or will I have to re-root? I still have stock recovery.
yea, you just lose root after the update and you can re-root afterward. you wont lose anything. The update is very minimal so i would say wait until the official Lollipop comes out to update it.
